Maybe I made a mistake yesterday, but yesterday’s me is still me. Today, I am who I am with all my faults and my mistakes. Tomorrow, I might be a tiny bit wiser, and that’ll be me too. These faults and mistakes are what I am, making up the brightest stars in the constellation of my life. I have to come to love myself for who I am, for who I was, and for who I hope to become. Jin and RM went as far as to have a serious conversation about it at one point. Jin says: ________The both of us were in agreement that the team had to go up. But the difference between us was that I was wondering if we could pursue our happiness a little first and then think about what was going to happen, while he believed we had to give our all now for the sake of later happiness.

Time is passing, I’m still standing here, and people are putting all sorts of labels on me… I couldn’t avoid any of that as long as I lived, but maybe there was one last part of me that only I could define. And if that part joined another part that even I nor anyone else could ever define, then my yesterday and today can be created from there. [RM, ch. 6]

RM’s moniker since 2012 was initially “Rap Monster” until he changed it to “RM” on November 13, 2017, in the spirit of embracing a wider variety of music.

RM had to trim his message to make it brief and so as not to cause misunderstanding. If the meaning didn’t come across properly, questions would arise that could cause problems for both Korea and America. ______Until around the end of 2018, I found it stressful every time. I couldn’t always come up with answers just like that. So, I learned English really as a matter of “survival.” I still find it difficult when technical topics come up. And for sensitive questions, I didn’t think that just avoiding answering left a good impression. So, I had to respond tactfully without being provocative or causing misunderstanding, and I had to do that in English. Truly … there were a few really hairy moments.

with regard to the misogyny issue. RM adds: ______This was because I’d received clear comments and criticism about the raps I’d written as well as my views. The Gangnam Station murder31 happened around that time, and so from a woman’s perspective I think there was no choice but to speak out even more. Someone I know said, if you call a situation of equality “0,” and the world’s injustice is at as much as “+ 10,” then those experiencing injustice have no choice but to emphasize not “0,” but “–10” in order to achieve equality. Those words really hit home for me.

RM even called his parents in advance to let them know there might not be another album. If the members ended up not renewing their contracts, Jin explains, he had even been considering leaving the entertainment industry entirely:

For RM and the others, it was inevitable that they would seek out a reason for doing what they did. RM adds,
I looked up and studied so much about insults and hurts, and I got even more passionate. "Oh, I really have to do better." Do what better, I wasn't sure, but I'd already made my debut, and already got dissed, so I wanted to somehow do something that was within my scope, and really empty myself out.

It was the perfect opportunity for RM to clarify his own thoughts as he struggled between his identities as a hip-hop artist and an idol.
—It was extremely important to me, having unloaded something like that. The hurt was still there, but [the interview] comforted my heart in some ways...Bad things have to happen for there to be good things. And I thought at the time, "Oh, something like that happened, but thanks to that, people are coming to reach out to us.

This vibe helped the entire team acclimatize to idol life. Jimin recalls how he felt:
RM and I talked a lot. We weren't really famous or anything, but we couldn't exactly spit on the streets without consequences at this point...And we were gradually building up a sense of responsibility to know the value of our work.
