I’ve never skydived, bungee-jumped, or parasailed. As I remove the headset, I try to calculate the fall and can’t. Maybe my brain is protecting me from myself and what I’m about to do. I’m not sure of the exact numbers, but I’ve heard hitting the water from such-and-such height feels like hitting concrete at such-and-such miles per hour. In other words, it’s a bone-shattering experience. I seriously doubt those calculations are based on the Syrena bone structure though. In fact, I’m counting on it. “No lower, okay?” Dan says, looking out his window to the water below. “Oh, you see sharks! Wow, it looks like a feeding frenzy down there. Hey, don’t touch that!” I grip the handle harder, but the door won’t budge. Leaning back, I get in the mule-kick position. “Emma, don’t!” Toraf yells. “Those are sharks, Emma!” I take a deep breath. “Wait until I have them under control before you jump.” A joint effort from two half-Syrena legs sends the door flying to a watery grave. “They want proof?” I grumble to myself as I lean into the wind, “I’ll show them proof.” Right before I hit the water, I can still hear Toraf screaming.

Travis?” Her voice came out scratchy and cracked. “What are you doing in my room?” Those eyes—not quite green, not quite brown—crinkled at the corners. “I’m not in your room, darlin’. You’re in mine.” What? Maybe she was still dreaming. That would explain why Travis was here and why nothing was making a lick of sense. But the throbbing behind her ear seemed awfully real. “My head hurts.” “You were kicked by a mule.” A mule? Meredith frowned. Uncle Everett didn’t own a mule. Had she been injured at the livery fetching Ginger? And why was Travis grinning at her? Shouldn’t he be more concerned? “It’s not very heroic of you to smile at my misfortune.” Really. This was her dream after all. Her hero should be more solicitous. Of course, usually in her dreams, Travis rescued her before any injury occurred. The man was getting lax. She’d started to tell him so when he laid the back of his hand on her forehead as if feeling for fever. The gentle touch instantly dissolved her pique. He removed his hand and met her gaze. “I’m smiling because I’m happy to see you awake. We’ve been worried about you.” “Awake?” Meredith scrunched her brows together until the throbbing around her skull forced her to relax. “Travis, you’re not making any sense. I can’t be awake. You only come to me when I’m dreaming. Although you’re usually younger and . . . well . . . cleaner, and not so in need of a shave. “But don’t get me wrong,” she hurried to assure him. It wouldn’t do to insult her hero. “You’re just as handsome as always. I don’t even mind that you didn’t save me this time. The important thing is that you’re here.

Thank God Ahab and Meshach were out of sight. He’d worked for Tarlander more than once and would surely have been recognized. “Was that who I think it was?” she asked Benjamin when he waited for her at a bridge crossing a wide creek. “Yessuh.” Benjamin shook his head. “Dat close.” He turned his horse. “Not far now.” They gathered in a small clearing bordering the creek, where Daniel awaited them. He was already gathering sticks for a fire. Jesselynn reached behind her to help a groggy Thaddeus climb up on the seat. “You been a mighty good boy. I’m right proud of you.” “Hungry?” He reached up and wrapped his arms around her neck. Burrowing into her chest like a little gopher, he repeated with more insistence. “Hungry. Want milk?” Jesselynn sighed. Where would they get milk Other fresh food too, for that matter. Her eyes felt as if they’d been rolling in the Sahara Desert, and her rear felt permanently glued to the hard seat. “I git some.” Benjamin remounted his horse. “You’d best take the mule, then,” Jesselynn said. “Oh.” He dismounted with a nod. “ ’Phelia, you got a jug?” Meshach unhitched the team and removed the harness from both horse and mule, then slipped a bridle with short reins on the mule. “You hurry.” After handing Benjamin a couple of their precious store of coins, Jesselynn climbed over the wagon wheel and, when her feet felt solid ground, leaned against the wheel until her knees no longer felt like buckling. She propped

It was a chicken. He had flown through the hole in the ceiling, and was flapping down. But he didn’t stop at my floor. He went straight through the hole where the blue block had been. He kept on falling and flapping, all the way down into the treasure room. It looked like my test dummy had found me. He landed gently on the gray square.     Nothing happened. I exhaled with relief.   And then…KABOOM!  Yep, I guess I was right after all. It WAS a booby trap. I thanked my lucky stars that I hadn’t tried it out myself. But then I felt kind of bad for the chicken. That brave (and bird-brained) chicken had saved my life! I will forever remember that chicken as Buster, my crash-test dummy. (I think “dummy” may be an especially accurate description in this case.)   Sadly, the chests didn’t make it. There was only a giant crater where they used to be. So long riches and possibly cookies. That’s the way the cookie crumbles. *sigh*   Monday   Good News: I have five emeralds. Bad News: I think another librarian doesn’t like me.   Whew! My pack mule days are finally done. Over the past couple of days, I gathered the last ten blocks of wool I needed to trade for a saddle, and dragged them back to the village. Then, one-by-one I grabbed the blocks of wool from the library, and gave them to the farmer. I don’t think the librarian was too pleased with me. She strung together about nine “Hurrrs” while I removed my blocks of wool. I’ve never heard villagers speak so much. In my experience, that’s usually not a good thing. (Think: Mr. Rimoldi.)   Anyway, it was totally worth it. My wooly trade with the farmer went down without a hitch. Tomorrow I get a saddle!

Whether we leave out the removal of American Indians from their land, or the refusal to give ex-slaves their forty acres and a mule, the effort to airbrush the definition of an American collective identity on the national landscape has stymied our ability to fully comprehend who Americans are collectively and individually.

Verified accounts typically have higher limits, fewer holds, and better support resolution. Want to scale sales or withdraw funds quickly? Verification is the ticket. ✅What “verified” means on PayPal When PayPal calls an account “verified,” it has validated one or more of the following: a connected bank account, a linked debit/credit card, and (when required) identity documents. Verification shows PayPal you’re the real owner of those instruments. It doesn’t make you invisible to disputes or taxes — it makes your account more credible. Benefits of verification for individuals and businesses Higher sending and withdrawal limits. Reduced chance of long transaction holds. Access to business features (invoicing, merchant tools). Easier dispute resolution and better buyer/seller trust. Eligibility for integrations and marketplace payouts. Who needs verification and why urgency sometimes matters If you run an e-commerce store, offer freelance services, accept high-value payments, or need to withdraw funds frequently, verification matters fast. New sellers on marketplaces, businesses facing seasonal spikes, or individuals closing time-sensitive deals all want verification quickly to avoid cash flow pauses. Common scenarios requiring fast verification A one-off large sale that exceeds default limits. Joining a marketplace that requires a verified payout account. Resolving a pending hold tied to transaction evidence. Complying with KYC for business banking or payment onboarding. Risks of shortcuts and why to avoid illicit methods Shortcuts like buying accounts or sharing credentials can lead to permanent closures, frozen funds, fraud investigations, and legal exposure. Those “verified account for sale” offers are high-risk: stolen IDs, stolen cards, or mule accounts often back them — and buyers become complicit. Always choose legal verification routes. Step-by-step legal route to verification (fast-track tactics) Here’s an efficient, legal path to get verified quickly and keep your account healthy. Step 1: Create the right account type (Personal vs Business) Choose Personal if you’re only receiving occasional payments from friends/family or small sales. Choose Business if you’re selling regularly; Business accounts offer merchant features and faster scaling. Using the correct account avoids later restrictions and supports growth. Step 2: Use consistent, accurate identity and contact info Enter your full legal name (or registered business name), address, and phone number exactly as they appear on your bank and ID documents. Mismatches are the most common verification blocker. Step 3: Confirm email and phone immediately Click PayPal’s email confirmation and verify your phone with the SMS code. These quick steps remove basic friction and often unlock additional verification prompts faster.
