In No Contest, Alfie Kohn characterizes competition as coming from situations where resources are scarce. But education involves a resource that can never be scarce: one person having knowledge and wisdom does not prevent someone else from having it. It might be scarce in the sense that not many people have it, especially when it comes to very specialized knowledge, but the whole point of education should be to share knowledge and wisdom with the next generation and thus ensure that it keeps growing. So the fact that we make education competitive is at worst contradictory and at best a choice that we should acknowledge and question.

Toda actividad humana está basada en el deseo de incremento. La gente busca más comida, más ropa, mejor techo, más lujo, más belleza, más conocimiento, más placer -el incremento en algo, más vida-. Cada ser viviente siente esta necesidad continua de avanzar, cuando el impulso cesa, la disolución y la muerte llegan enseguida. Esto lo sabemos instintivamente y por eso siempre buscamos más. Esta ley del incremento perpetuo fue fijada por Jesús en la parábola de los talentos: Porque sólo al que produce más se le dará más y tendrá en abundancia, pero al que no produce se le quitará hasta lo que tiene.

Nunca se permita sentirse decepcionado. Puede esperar tener algo en un momento dado y no obtenerlo en ese momento, y esto le parecerá un fracaso. Pero si se aferra a su fe, encontrará que el fracaso es sólo aparente. Siga haciendo las cosas en la cierta manera y si no recibe lo que esperaba, recibirá algo mucho mejor que lo hará ver que el aparente fracaso fue en realidad un gran éxito.

The Kony campaign us an example of how powerful 'slacktivisim' can be, and demonstrates that, with enough worldwide awareness and social pressure, movements like this one have the power to make politicians move. It also makes the ignorant less so. No-one knew who Kony was before the campaign. The atrocities were happening, and it wasn't even a blip on the social consciousness radar. It's encouraging that there's a way to spread information like this so quickly.
