Rose said, leaping out of range of the onslaught. "I don't--- what on--- would you stop?" Wendell cried, shielding himself with his arm. "Yes, all right, I should have knocked, but is this really necessary?" The faerie kept on shrieking, and then it launched the frying pan at Wendell's head--- he ducked--- and slammed its door. Rose and I stared at each other. Ariadne looked blankly from Wendell to the door, clutching her scarf with both hands. "Bloody Winter Folk," Wendell said, brushing ceramic shards from his cloak. "Winter Folk?" I repeated. "Guardians of the seasons--- or anyway, that is how they see themselves," he said sourly. "Really I think they just want a romantic excuse to go about blasting people with frost and zephyrs and such. It seems I woke him earlier than he desired." The new idea (of winter’s beauty) is associated with Edmund Burke’s great essay on the sublime and beautiful from the middle of the eighteenth century. Burke’s was one of the three or four most powerful ideas in the history of thought, because he wrenched aesthetics away from the insipid idea of beauty (physical, manicured) towards recognition of the full span of human sympathy. Cold Care Capsules One of my favorite recipes for keeping a cold at bay or getting over one more quickly, these Cold Care Capsules are easy to make but pack a big punch. Take the half hour or so that’s required to make a batch, and keep it on hand for the cold season. You can find gelatin or vegetable capsules at most herb shops and natural foods stores, and some pharmacies. 1 part echinacea root powder 1 part goldenseal root powder (organically cultivated) ½ part marsh mallow root powder ¼–½ part cayenne powder (depending on your heattoler ance level) “OO” gelatin or vegetable capsules To make the capsules: Mix the powders together in a small bowl. Scoop the powder into each end of a capsule, packing tight, and recap. It takes only a few minutes to cap 50 to 75 capsules, a winter’s worth for most families. Store in a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. To use: At the first sign of a cold or flu coming on, take 2 capsules every 2 to 3 hours until the symptoms subside, or up to 9 capsules a day. This is a high dose and should not be continued for longer than 2 to 3 days, at which time you should decrease the dose to 2 capsules three times a day (the normal adult dose for most herbal capsules; see pages 46–47 for further information on appropriate

Downy snow on the herb beds and flower gardens caught the light in soft, variant blues and mauves. Reddily clustered berries against the drifts formed a pretty picture. A frosted crescent blanketed the bench where Lavender and her father used to sit, listening to Amaryllis Fitch's divine harp concerts. And the winter garden wasn't silent, either. As a result of human-induced climate change, the Arctic region is warming, and it is doing so at a rate faster than the rest of the planet. This is having a great impact on the Arctic Ocean ice cap. One stark trend is that the overall thickness of the sea ice is decreasing rapidly—it declined from a mean of 3.64 metres in 1980 to 1.89 metres in 2008. Prior to the late 1970s, sea ice typically extended over close to 15.6 million square kilometres in late winter in the Arctic. However, the maximum winter extent of sea ice in the Arctic Ocean has been decreasing by an average of 3 per cent per decade since 1979 and in recent years at a much faster rate than this; it is now down to about 14.4 million square kilometres. The extent of minimum summer ice cover is decreasing at an even faster rate. Sea ice typically extended over about 7 million square kilometres at summer’s end in the Arctic. Over the past decade, though, the minimum sea ice extent has been only 3.5 to 5 million square kilometres. At this rate, the Arctic Ocean will become nearly or completely ice free for several months a year before 2040, and possibly within the next decade.

Now he could smile when the sighting of an aircraft approaching at a distant but undetermined range came through the Fletcher’s bridge phones as, “Hey, Cap’n, here’s another one of them thar aero-planes, but don’t you fret none. Though the Drosophilia ovary is a structure with a different purpose - one designed to make fly eggs, not blood cells - the ovary, and specifically, the substructure of the ovary known as the 'germarium', have similarities with what was described for hematopoiesis. The organization of the cells that make up the germarium can be likened to a knitted winter hat pulled over the wearer's head. The extreme end - the pompon - comprises a set of cells called the 'terminal filament' cells; the top of the hat is formed by anterior 'cap' cells; and the sides of the hat are made up of more lateral 'inner sheath' cells that surround the GSCs themselves. Within this small cluster of cells, precise positions matter. When a GSC divides in two, one cell remains in contact with the cap cells and the other loses this immediate proximity. The cell that remains in contact with cap cells remains a GSC. The more posterior-positioned cell, by contrast, goes on to form an egg. A similar setup exists in the Drosophilia testes, in which 'hub' cells sit immediately anterior to the male GSCs. A question arises, what is special about the proximity of a GSC to a cap cell that keeps one daughter of a recently divided stem a stem cell while its sister goes on to form an egg?

The name “Bering land bridge” is a misnomer. Never mind Vitus Bering, the jowly Danish cartographer and explorer who led sailing expeditions for the Russian Navy along the upper Pacific Rim in the eighteenth century and after whom the Bering Sea and the Bering Strait were named. When this was land and not water, the land bridge was not a catwalk teetering from one hemisphere to the next, but a flat subcontinent fully exposed when sea levels were at their glacial low, its center five hundred miles from the nearest coast. I would have looked across a steppe grassland and the occasional birch and black spruce grove, summers free of snow, ground grazed and turned to grass by large herbivores, loess blown in from the edges of distant ice caps, allowing the soil to hold and retain organic matter. This would have been an easily habitable landscape. Winters were dark and furiously cold, but summers produced copious wildflowers, their pollen found in cores taken from the bottom of the Bering Sea. The land bridge had experienced a unique regime of global weather patterns, the Pacific curling up warmly against its southern coast, Himalayan ice cap blocking precipitation from a quarter of the world away, and the mass of the land bridge itself holding its own temperature, a terrestrial heat sink. Inland precipitation was sparse, winter snows frigid but light. Land bridge summers were sunnier than those experienced on St. Lawrence Island, temperatures slightly warmer, more muskeg and grass than permafrost, snowpack melting earlier for longer growing seasons.
