… It was an astonishing situation, a tragedy unique in history. What terror had driven these peace-loving people to seek refuge in such a wilderness? Even grass had become scarce along the track. Scanty patches of grass had been eaten clean and transport animals, already showing signs of exhaustion were far from their journey’s end. … the constant flicker of lightning and the distant growl of thunder wasominous. In the small hours the storm burst upon us. Hastily rolling up bedding we took refuge wherever we could, in or under the
lorries standing round. There together with many Indians we sat huddled and waited for the dawn. Dr Russell

Dr. Morris soon recognized that the difference between successful and unsuccessful marriages can often be traced to how well couples are able to "bond" during the courtship period. By bonding he referred to the process by which a man and woman become cemented together emotionally. It describes the chemistry that permits two previous strangers to become intensely valuable to one another. It helps them weather the storms of life and remain committed in sickness and health, for richer or poorer, for better or worse, forsaking all others until they are parted in death. It is a phenomenal experience that almost defies description.

Love is giving, love is learning, love is willing to receive love and love in return, love is not only your bloodline, but love is also everywhere. Love is what you make of it, whether it’s the birds singing you a personal melody or the waves in the ocean washing away the hate and turning it into unconditional, endless love. Love is the people who would never think of giving up on you. Love is the people who put your broken pieces back together. Love is when the storm comes— and the wind isn’t too friendly, but it’s here for a purpose as it blows the branches on the trees. The rain is pounding on the daisy in someone’s front yard, yet the daisy weathers the storm and needs that extra shower—after the storm, the ground is still moist, there are still puddles of water and the rain still lingers on, but when you look up there is a rainbow of love.

Almondine
To her, the scent and the memory of him were one. Where it lay strongest, the distant past came to her as if that morning: Taking a dead sparrow from her jaws, before she knew to hide such things. Guiding her to the floor, bending her knee until the arthritis made it stick, his palm hotsided on her ribs to measure her breaths and know where the pain began. And to comfort her. That had been the week before he went away.
He was gone, she knew this, but something of him clung to the baseboards. At times the floor quivered under his footstep. She stood then and nosed into the kitchen and the bathroom and the bedroom-especially the closet-her intention to press her ruff against his hand, run it along his thigh, feel the heat of his body through the fabric.
Places, times, weather-all these drew him up inside her. Rain, especially, falling past the double doors of the kennel, where he’d waited through so many storms, each drop throwing a dozen replicas into the air as it struck the waterlogged earth. And where the rising and falling water met, something like an expectation formed, a place where he might appear and pass in long strides, silent and gestureless. For she was not without her own selfish desires: to hold things motionless, to measure herself against them and find herself present, to know that she was alive precisely because he needn’t acknowledge her in casual passing; that utter constancy might prevail if she attended the world so carefully. And if not constancy, then only those changes she desired, not those that sapped her, undefined her.
And so she searched. She’d watched his casket lowered into the ground, a box, man-made, no more like him than the trees that swayed under the winter wind. To assign him an identity outside the world was not in her thinking. The fence line where he walked and the bed where he slept-that was where he lived, and they remembered him.
Yet he was gone. She knew it most keenly in the diminishment of her own self. In her life, she’d been nourished and sustained by certain things, him being one of them, Trudy another, and Edgar, the third and most important, but it was really the three of them together, intersecting in her, for each of them powered her heart a different way. Each of them bore different responsibilities to her and with her and required different things from her, and her day was the fulfillment of those responsibilities. She could not imagine that portion of her would never return. With her it was not hope, or wistful thoughts-it was her sense of being alive that thinned by the proportion of her spirit devoted to him.
"ory of Edgar Sawtelle"
As spring came on, his scent about the place began to fade. She stopped looking for him. Whole days she slept beside his chair, as the sunlight drifted from eastern-slant to western-slant, moving only to ease the weight of her bones against the floor.
And Trudy and Edgar, encapsulated in mourning, somehow forgot to care for one another, let alone her. Or if they knew, their grief and heartache overwhelmed them. Anyway, there was so little they might have done, save to bring out a shirt of his to lie on, perhaps walk with her along the fence line, where fragments of time had snagged and hung. But if they noticed her grief, they hardly knew to do those things. And she without the language to ask.

These were the rains that drove people close to the walls, under the balconies, or sent them dashing madly through the squares, and drenched the fluttering ribbons and bright trappings of the horses so that their flanks were streaked with delicate watercolors. The storms washed the streets so that little streams of brown water went roaring along the gutters toward the sea, and thundered on the roofs of the cafés where people were crowded together laughing in the steam and half darkness. I loved those rains; they were of the sort that is welcomed by everyone, preceded by hot, oppressive hours of stillness; they came the way storms come in the islands but did not last as long, and often the sun came out when they had passed. I was happy whenever the rain caught me walking about in the streets, for then I would rush into the nearest café, along with all the others who were escaping from the weather, all of us crushing laughing through the doors. The rain allowed me to go anywhere, to form quick, casual friendships, forced to share one of the overcrowded tables, among the beaming waiters who pushed good-naturedly through the throngs carrying cups of steaming apple cider.

According to Massimo Maffei from the University of Turin, plants-and that includes trees-are perfectly capable of distinguishing their own roots from the roots of other species and even from the roots of related individuals.
But why are trees such social beings? Why do they share food with their own species and sometimes even go so far as to nourish their competitors? The reasons are the same as for human communities: there are advantages to working together. A tree is not a forest. On its own, a tree cannot establish a consistent local climate. It is at the mercy of wind and weather. But together, many trees create an ecosystem that moderates extremes of heat and cold, stores a great deal of water, and generates a great deal of humidity. And in this protected environment, trees can live to be very old. To get to this point, the community must remain intact no matter what. If every tree were looking out only for itself, then quite a few of them would never reach old age. Regular fatalities would result in many large gaps in the tree canopy, which would make it easier for storms to get inside the forest and uproot more trees. The heat of summer would reach teh forest floor and dry it out. Every tree would suffer.

But mostly, finally, ultimately, I'm here for the weather.
As a result of the weather, ours is a landscape in a minor key, a sketchy panorama where objects, both organic and inorganic, lack well-defined edges and tent to melt together, creating a perpetual blurred effect, as if God, after creating Northwestern Washington, had second thoughts and tried unsuccessfully to erase it. Living here is not unlike living inside a classical Chinese painting before the intense wisps of mineral pigment had dried upon the silk - although, depending on the bite in the wind, they're times when it's more akin to being trapped in a bad Chinese restaurant; a dubious joint where gruff waiters slam chopsticks against the horizon, where service is haphazard, noodles soggy, wallpaper a tad too green, and considerable amounts of tea are spilt; but in each and every fortune cookie there's a line of poetry you can never forget. Invariably, the poems comment on the weather.
In the deepest, darkest heart of winter, when the sky resembles bad banana baby food for months on end, and the witch measles that meteorologists call "drizzle" are a chronic gray rash on the skin of the land, folks all around me sink into a dismal funk. Many are depressed, a few actually suicidal. But I, I grow happier with each fresh storm, each thickening of the crinkly stratocumulus. "What's so hot about the sun?" I ask. Sunbeams are a lot like tourists: intruding where they don't belong, promoting noise and forced activity, faking a shallow cheerfulness, dumb little cameras slung around their necks. Raindrops, on the other hand, introverted, feral, buddhistically cool, behave as if they were locals. Which, of course, they are.

Shared interests are one of the most misguided considering factors when it comes to choosing a partner. Deciding that someone is a good person, or your Soulmate, or made of exactly the same stuff as you simply because you both love the music of George Harrison is ridiculous.

As of old Phoenician men, to the Tin Isles sailing
Straight against the sunset and the edges of the earth,
Chaunted loud above the storm and the strange sea's wailing,
Legends of their people and the land that gave them birth-
Sang aloud to Baal-Peor, sang unto the horned maiden,
Sang how they should come again with the Brethon treasure laden,
Sang of all the pride and glory of their hardy enterprise,
How they found the outer islands, where the unknown stars arise;
And the rowers down below, rowing hard as they could row,
Toiling at the stroke and feather through the wet and weary weather,
Even they forgot their burden in the measure of a song,
And the merchants and the masters and the bondsmen all together,
Dreaming of the wondrous islands, brought the gallant ship along;
So in mighty deeps alone on the chainless breezes blown
In my coracle of verses I will sing of lands unknown,
Flying from the scarlet city where a Lord that knows no pity,
Mocks the broken people praying round his iron throne,
-Sing about the Hidden Country fresh and full of quiet green.
Sailing over seas uncharted to a port that none has seen.

Astounding, really, that Michel could consider psychology any kind of science at all. So much of it consisted of throwing together. Of thinking of the mind as a steam engine, the mechanical analogy most ready to hand during the birth of modern psychology. People had always done that when they thought about the mind: clockwork for Descartes, geological changes for the early Victorians, computers or holography for the twentieth century, AIs for the twenty-first…and for the Freudian traditionalists, steam engines. Application of heat, pressure buildup, pressure displacement, venting, all shifted into repression, sublimation, the return of the repressed. Sax thought it unlikely steam engines were an adequate model for the human mind. The mind was more like—what?—an ecology—a fellfield—or else a jungle, populated by all manner of strange beasts. Or a universe, filled with stars and quasars and black holes. Well—a bit grandiose, that—really it was more like a complex collection of synapses and axons, chemical energies surging hither and yon, like weather in an atmosphere. That was better—weather—storm fronts of thought, high-pressure zones, low-pressure cells, hurricanes—the jet streams of biological desires, always making their swift powerful rounds…life in the wind. Well. Throwing together. In fact the mind was poorly understood.

The emphasis here will be on strength, not pathology; on challenge, not comfort; on self-differentiation, not herding for togetherness. This is a difficult perspective to maintain in a “seatbelt society” more oriented toward safety than adventure. This book is not, therefore, for those who prefer peace to progress. It is not for those who mistake another’s well-defined stand for coercion. It is not for those who fail to see how in any family or institution a perpetual concern for consensus leverages power to the extremists. And it is not for those who lack the nerve to venture out of the calm eye of good feelings and togetherness and weather the storm of protest that inevitably surrounds a leader’s self-definition. For, whether we are considering a family, a work system, or an entire nation, the resistance that sabotages a leader’s initiative usually has less to do with the “issue” that ensues than with the fact that the leader took initiative.

Before he became a father, he imagined the relationship as being like an intensive version of owning a pet. The child, he thought, was essentially passive, a vessel into which you poured your love. On TV that’s how it looked. Children were silent, dormant; you went into their bedrooms, gazed down at them fondly, drew the blankets over them as they slept. But in life, he discovered, parenthood was like – it was – living with a person. A new person, with strong opinions, strong tastes, arbitrary swings of emotion, all of them addressed at you. You were the passive one: the work of care was primarily to endure, to weather the endless, buffeting storms of unmediated will. Now they are at war again. The garage, the fights, the endless anxiety of the last two years: there is so much to be angry about. All he can do is take it, in the hope that eventually it will pass; like an old Rocky film where Sylvester Stallone wins because the other guy tires himself out punching him. But if they’re not even in the ring together? If she’s not even there any more to punch him? What then?

And then we spoke of the weather, which had been awfully hot. After that, unable to think of anything more to say, we fell into a silence that was troubled and unwelcome. Trying to end it, I said finally, “Well, we’ve had a time,” speaking of the weather. And Mat said, “Yes, we’ve had a time,” speaking of the war. We spoke in very general terms, then, of the war and other trials of life in this world. Mat said, “Everything that will shake has got to be shook.” “That’s Scripture,” I said, and he nodded. Thinking to try to comfort him, I said, “Well, along with all else, there’s goodness and beauty too. I guess that’s the mercy of the world.” Mat said, “The mercy of the world is you don’t know what’s going to happen.” And then after a pause, speaking on in the same dry, level voice as before, he told me why he had been up walking about so late. He had had a dream. In the dream he had seen Virgil as he had been when he was about five years old: a pretty little boy who hadn’t yet thought of anything he would rather do than follow Mat around at work. He looked as real, as much himself, as if the dream were not a dream. But in the dream Mat knew everything that was to come. He told me this in a voice as steady and even as if it were only another day’s news, and then he said, “All I could do was hug him and cry.” And then I could no longer sit in that tall chair. I had to come down. I came down and went over and sat beside Mat. If he had cried, I would have. We both could have, but we didn’t. We sat together for a long time and said not a word. After a while, though the grief did not go away from us, it grew quiet. What had seemed a storm wailing through the entire darkness seemed to come in at last and lie down. Mat got up then and went to the door. “Well. Thanks,” he said, not looking at me even then, and went away.

Ryder turns off the radio and reaches for my camera, pointing it at me in the dark. It beeps, and a red light indicates that he’s filming. “Are you scared, Jemma?”
I prop my head up on one elbow. “Yeah, I’m scared,” I say, carefully weighing my words. “But…we’ll be okay. This house has weathered plenty of storms through the years. It’ll keep us safe.”
“I hope you’re right.”
“Yeah, me too.”
I hear him swallow hard. “I’m glad I’m here with you.”
“I’m glad you are too,” I say automatically. But then…I realize with a start that it’s true. I am glad he’s here. I feel safe with him. More relaxed than I would be otherwise. He thinks I’m distracting him, making him forget his fears. But the truth is, he’s helping me just as much. Maybe more. I’m pretty sure I’d be a blubbering mess right about now if I were alone.
“Thanks, Ryder,” I say, my voice thick.
“For what?”
“Everything.” I squeeze my eyes shut. “Turn off the camera, okay?”
He does, setting it aside before stretching out on the far side of the bed, facing me. Our gazes meet, and my stomach flutters nervously. There’s something there in his dark eyes, something I’ve never seen before. Vulnerability…mixed with a kind of dark, melty chocolate expression that I don’t recognize.
Our hands are lying there on the bed between us, nearly touching. I lift my pinkie, brushing it against his. Chills race down my spine at the contact, my heart pounding against my ribs.
I hear his breath catch. Slowly, his hand moves over mine, his fingertips brushing my knuckles until his entire hand covers mine. His skin is hot, the pressure reassuring. A minute passes, maybe two. It’s almost like he’s waiting, watching to see if I pull my hand away.
I don’t.
In one quick movement, he slides his hand under mine and threads our fingers together.
We lie like that for several minutes, arms outstretched, hands joined, eyes wide open. The storm continues to rage around us, but it’s like we’re locked in this safe, calm place where nothing can touch us.
My breathing slows; my limbs grow heavy. My lids flutter shut. I try to resist, but it’s futile. I’m exhausted.
I drift off to sleep with a smile on my lips, Ryder holding me fast.

You mentioned how all marriages have Category 5 moments, and how you didn’t think your previous relationship would have made it through those moments. I think about that sometimes. About what could make one couple survive a Category 5 moment, but a different couple might not. I’ve thought about it enough to come up with a possible reason. Hurricanes aren’t a constant threat to coastal towns. There are more days with great weather and perfect beach days than there are hurricanes. Marriages are similar, in that there are a lot of great days with no arguments, when both people are filled with so much love for each other. But then you have the threatening-weather days. There might only be a few a year, but they can do enough damage that it takes years to repair. Some of the coastal towns will be prepared for the bad-weather days. They’ll save their best resources and most of their energy so that they’ll be stocked up and prepared for the aftermath. But some towns won’t be as prepared. They’ll put all their resources into the good weather days in hopes that the severe weather will never come. It’s the lazier choice and the choice with greater consequences. I think that’s the difference in the marriages that survive and the marriages that don’t. Some people think the focus in a marriage should be put on all the perfect days. They love as much and as hard as they can when everything is going right. But if a person gives all of themselves in the good times, hoping the bad times never come, there may not be enough resources or energy left to withstand those Category 5 moments. I know without a doubt that we’re going to have so many good moments. No matter what life throws at us, we're going to make great memories together, Quinn. That's a given. But there's also going to be bad days and sad days and days that test our resolve. Those are the days I want you to feel the absolute weight of my love for you. I promise I will love you more during the storms than I will love you during the perfect days. I promise to love you more when you're hurting then when you're happy. I promise to love you more when we're poor than when we're swimming in riches. I promise to love you more when you're crying than when you're laughing. I promise to love you more when you're sick than when you're healthy. I promise to love you more when you hate me than when you love me. And I promise . . . I swear . . . that I love you more as you read this letter than I did when I wrote it. I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you. I can’t wait to shine light on all your perfects.

I hurried indoors to check on my grandparents. They were clinging together in fear, Nonna wailing and clutching her rosary beads. Nonno thrust a cow bell into my hands, shouting at me to go outside and make as much noise as possible to avert the storm devils. ‘They’ve come to ruin our vegetable plots and maize fields with their evil hailstones,’ he shouted at me. ‘Nonno, no amount of noise will stop what will be,’ I told him for the umpteenth time. ‘It’s only weather; it’s just a storm…’ I tried to calm them down but Nonno and Nonna had been brought up to believe these superstitions. They were too old now to think otherwise. I believed in many of our traditions but I’ve always known that a belief in storm devils was ridiculous. 7

Of the eight clients and three guides in my group, five of us, including myself, never made it to the top. Of the six who summited, four were later killed in the storm. They included our thirty-five-year-old expedition leader, Rob Hall, a gentle and humorous New Zealander of mythic mountaineering prowess. Before he froze to death in a snow hole near the top of Everest, Rob would radio a heartbreaking farewell to his pregnant wife, Jan Arnold, at their home in Christchurch. Another sad fatality was diminutive Yasuko Namba, forty-seven, whose final human contact was with me, the two of us huddled together through that awful night, lost and freezing in the blizzard on the South Col, just a quarter mile from the warmth and safety of camp. Four other climbers also perished in the storm, making May 10, 1996, the deadliest day on Everest in the seventy-five years since the intrepid British schoolmaster, George Leigh Mallory, first attempted to climb the mountain.

**Verse 1:**
In the shadow of the mountain, under the big blue sky,
Times are tough, the road is rough, and the well's run dry.
The fields are barren, the cattle are thin,
Hard times have come knocking, wearing a wicked grin.
**Chorus:**
But I'll keep on fighting through the storm and the strife,
Hard times may bend me, but they won't take my life.
With grit and with grace, I'll stand my ground,
'Cause hard times can't keep a good heart down.
**Verse 2:**
The factory's closed, the jobs are gone,
Folks are feeling forgotten, but we've got to carry on.
The bank's calling, the bills are due,
But I've got faith, and I'll see it through.
**Chorus:**
But I'll keep on fighting through the storm and the strife,
Hard times may bend me, but they won't take my life.
With grit and with grace, I'll stand my ground,
'Cause hard times can't keep a good heart down.
**Bridge:**
When the night feels endless, and hope seems lost,
I look to the stars, no matter the cost.
The dawn is coming, it's just out of sight,
I'll hold on till morning, through the darkest night.
**Chorus:**
But I'll keep on fighting through the storm and the strife,
Hard times may bend me, but they won't take my life.
With grit and with grace, I'll stand my ground,
'Cause hard times can't keep a good heart down.
**Outro:**
So here's to the fighters, the dreamers, the brave,
To those who find strength, even when they're afraid.
We'll weather these hard times, we won't back down,
Together we'll rise, 'cause we're homeward bound.

Hell. I swallowed hard and traced a finger along one of the cuff bracelets. The color of platinum. “My God, Lee.” I picked one of them up and felt the weight of it in my hand. Such a simple design, straight lines, gleaming metal, about four or five millimeters wide, maybe two millimeters thick. Both had the same engraving. The Property and Love of Master Kingsley. Lee’s arms appeared under mine, and he placed a tiny screwdriver of sorts next to the box. It was the key, I realized. He was collaring me—permanently. Fuck. I wasn’t gonna cry, I wasn’t gonna cry. “Wear my collar,” he whispered in my ear. “For the rest of your life.” I nodded jerkily as my throat closed up. Holy shit, this was happening. “Always, Master.” He pressed himself closer to my back and took the first cuff from me. And he used the little screwdriver, in the same material, and unlocked the tiny lock. “Have you heard of cobalt chrome before?” he asked quietly. I shook my head, unable to stop staring at the cuffs. “Long before we started marketing it as an alternative for gold in wedding rings, we’ve used it for artificial joints, implants, and prosthetics because of how our bodies accept the metal.” He attached the first cuff around my left wrist, and it snapped into place with the faintest snick. Then he used the tool to secure the locking mechanism. “You’ll wear them day and night. You’ll shower with them. They’ll weather every storm, every fight-fuck in the woods, every flame from my Kevlar flogger, and any insecurity we might face together.” I sniffled and blinked past the sting in my eyes. “They’ll always be with you.” He moved on to the second cuff. “By default, I will always be with you too. They’re not just proof of my ownership—they’re a reminder that Master is one call away. And only he has the key.” My chest seized up, and the second both cuffs were locked into place, I spun in his embrace and threw my arms around his neck. I couldn’t fucking find my words. I just felt how full my heart was, how joy surged through me, how comfort threw a giant blanket over my existence. Lee tightened his arms around me and squeezed me so hard. “They’re never coming off.” “Good,” I croaked. “I love you so much.” Stronger than titanium. Like our love.

What Matters Most”

Verse 1: When the sun sets on our journey, and the years have flown on by,
We’ll look back on all the memories, with a tear and a sigh.
The house we built together, the cars we loved to drive,
They’ll fade into the background, as we cherish our sweet life.
Chorus: 'Cause when we get to the end of our lives together,
The things we owned won’t matter, not the stormy weather.
What will matter is the love we shared, so wild and free,
What will matter is that I had you, and you had me.
Verse 2: Through the highs and lows we wandered, hand in hand through every storm,
We found strength in each other, kept each other warm.
The treasures of this world, they can’t compare to what we’ve got,
A love that’s true and timeless, a love that can’t be bought.
Chorus: 'Cause when we get to the end of our lives together,
The things we owned won’t matter, not the stormy weather.
What will matter is the love we shared, so wild and free,
What will matter is that I had you, and you had me.
Bridge: So let’s dance beneath the moonlight, and laugh until we cry,
Let’s hold each other close, as the years go by.
For in the end, it’s not the things, but the love that we will see,
What will matter is that I had you, and you had me.
Chorus: 'Cause when we get to the end of our lives together,
The things we owned won’t matter, not the stormy weather.
What will matter is the love we shared, so wild and free,
What will matter is that I had you, and you had me.
Outro: Yes, what will matter is that I had you, and you had me.

Relationships aren’t easy. I know we’re sold the idea that once you’re with someone it’s smooth sailing. No one tells you about the rough waters or storms that will undoubtedly come. But you’re not alone. You can weather the storms together.

The heat of summer would reach the forest floor and dry it out. Every tree would suffer. Every tree, therefore, is valuable to the community and worth keeping around for as long as possible. And that is why even sick individuals are supported and nourished until they recover. Next time, perhaps it will be the other way round, and the supporting tree might be the one in need of assistance. When thick silver-gray beeches behave like this, they remind me of a herd of elephants. Like the herd, they, too, look after their own, and they help their sick and weak back up onto their feet. They are even reluctant to abandon their dead.

I use the military to illustrate the example because the lessons are so much more exaggerated when it is a matter of life and death. There is a pattern that exists in the organizations that achieve the greatest success, the ones that outmaneuver and outinnovate their competitors, the ones that command the greatest respect from inside and outside their organizations, the ones with the highest loyalty and lowest churn and the ability to weather nearly every storm or challenge. These exceptional organizations all have cultures in which the leaders provide cover from above and the people on the ground look out for each other. This is the reason they are willing to push hard and take the kinds of risks they do. And the way any organization can achieve this is with empathy.

If there is one lesson I learned from Lovie,” Cara continued, “and there were many, it is that above all, only one thing matters in life. Family. Who your people are, as she used to say. And by that she didn’t mean lineage or exclusivity. Nor wealth or position. But instead, what Lovie meant is what is visible right here in this barn tonight. We’ve weathered a lot since the pandemic began. We’ve been frustrated, upset, and challenged. But we’ve also been brought together in a way none of us could have foreseen. We are weathering yet another storm together, with, if you don’t mind me saying so, compassion, camaraderie, ingenuity, commitment, friendship, yes, fun too. And most of all, love.

Part of the journey into our human weathering is tending to the wounds, connecting through the wounds, and actively loving what remains towards restoration. We need to love because of and not in spite of, which is the work of time, something that geology has plenty of, but we do not. It might be brief, but what else is time for, if not to love. What else is love for if not to smooth the divisive edges of complexity and difference so that all might rub along better, not the same, but together. This is not a love or belonging that demands allegiance or agreement, but one that can tolerate, even embrace, authentic otherness.

However, true love isn't just about the rush of attraction or the infatuation of the honeymoon phase of a relationship. It's not about feeding our ego by always getting our way or boosting our own self-importance by always being “right” or admired. Rather, it's about two souls being humbly devoted and willing to weather the storms of life together as a team. This requires accountability, tolerance, and a willingness to put in the work to build a strong foundation of cooperation.

It is like the oak that hardens itself and bears up against the storm. It is weather-beaten and scarred and confident like a sea-captain. Also it straineth like a hound in the leash. It hath pride and great subtlety. Yea, and glee also! Let the Magus act thus in his conjuration. Let him sit and conjure; let him draw himself together in that forcefulness; let him rise next swollen and straining; let him dash back the hood from his head and fix his basilisk eye upon the sigil of the demon. Then let him sway the force of him to and fro like a satyr in silence, until the Word burst from his throat.

Listen. Even before I found out about you and Devlen, I realized we couldn’t be together. Now brace yourself, I’m going to use a weather analogy.”
I groaned.
He quirked a smile. “You’re all energy and excitement and then you blow away. Being with you is like being on the coast, dancing in the storms. Breathless activity, followed by calm. I have that with my job.” He brushed my hair from my eyes. “After you sacrificed your magic I thought you would be content to stay uninvolved in Sitian affairs and be with me. But you rushed off, jumping right back into the maelstrom. I don’t have the energy to deal with storms on both fronts—pun intended. I need someone steadier.”
Tears ran down my face.
He hugged me. “And I’ll offer to render aid whenever needed because I know you wouldn’t ask. After all, I don’t want to miss out on all the fun.

I can’t stop cleaning and I have a monster inside my brain and I miss you and Sloan is falling apart and his parents won’t take him off life support, so his organs are rotting. I can’t get all the lines right on the carpet with the vacuum and Stuntman is in a kennel and I haven’t seen him in days, and I just need you to let me clean this fucking apartment!”
I’m not sure how much of it he heard, if any. I was crying so hard I could barely understand myself. He just held me and caressed my hair, and for the first time in weeks the velociraptor hunted other prey.
Josh made me weak. Or strong. It was hard to tell anymore what I was without my coping mechanism. At least when I rode the beast, I got shit done. And now I was nothing but an emotional mess.
But at least the mess was mine.
Why did he have this effect on me? He had this way of waking up dormant parts of my soul. He ripped through me and let everything in with him like a storm surge.
I took on water.
And at the same time, something told me if I let him, he’d keep me afloat. He wouldn’t let me sink. I’d never felt this vulnerable and safe with anyone.
I felt hot and shaky. I gasped and clutched his shirt until the crying spasms stopped. He held me so tight my knees could have given out and I wouldn’t have fallen an inch.
“I can’t be the only one who has their shit together,” I whispered.
His chest rumbled as he spoke. “It doesn’t look like you have your shit together…”
I snorted. “Josh, please.” I looked up at him, my hands trembling on his collarbone. “I need you to insert yourself here. Go talk to his parents. They’ll listen to you.”
He looked at me like seeing me cry was agony. The longing on his face was razor blades to my heart. His sad eyes, the set of his mouth, his knit brows.
He loved me almost as much as I loved him, and I knew I was hurting him. I knew he thought I was enough. But I wasn’t enough. How could one of me be any kind of substitute for the half dozen kids he’d always wanted? It just couldn’t. The math didn’t work. The logic wasn’t sound.
He wiped a tear off my cheek with his thumb. “Okay,” he whispered. “I’ll go. Just, sit down or something. Stop cleaning.” He dipped his head to catch my eyes. “Are you okay? You’re shaking.”
He put a hand over mine to still the tremor against his chest, and the closeness of him made me whole for the first time in weeks.
“I’m fine,” I said, swallowing. “Just hurry, okay?”
He looked at me for a long moment, like he was trying to memorize my face or steal an extra second to hold me. Then he turned for the bathroom.
When he walked away from me, the absence of his body pressed into mine felt like I’d lost my clothes and I stood naked and exposed to the elements.
I missed him. No amount of time lessened it. It made it worse. My heart was a neglected building, and every day I weathered a fierce storm that dripped through my roof, flooded my floors, and broke my windows, and the disrepair just made me weaker and closer to collapse.
The water turned on in the bathroom and I looked around the apartment, my compulsion raging back with a fury now that he was gone.
At least I could do this for him. I could take care of his space, give it order. Wash his clothes and his blankets. Make things smell clean, turn his home into someplace he wanted to be. Do this thing that he obviously couldn’t do for himself at the moment.

Raven stood in the comparative shelter of the porch, her face turned up toward the sky, eyes closed. Tiny beads of perspiration dotted her forehead, and her fingers twisted together compulsively over her stomach. She was not with the others, rather somewhere out of her body and concentrating on attempting to find Byron’s location. Beside her stood her dark, intimidating husband, his mind obviously locked with hers. Mikhail was so like Jacques that Shea could not tear her gaze from him. As she moved onto the porch a step behind Jacques, she could clearly see that Mikhail was furious. He was seething with anger, violence swirling very close to the surface, yet his posture was purely protective. He had placed himself between Raven and the ferocity of the storm.
Gregori was as still as a statue, his face a blank mask, his silvery eyes as empty as death, yet Shea gave him a wide berth. There was something dangerous in his utter stillness. Shea felt she had no way to sorting out the complexity of the Carpathian male’s nature. Gregori was watching Raven through narrowed, restless eyes, eyes that saw far too much. Suddenly he cursed, low and vicious, startling from someone of his stature and power. “She should not put herself at risk. She is with child.”
His eyes met Jacques’, silver lightning and black ice. Total understanding between the two men. Shea merged her mind with Jacques’ quickly to try to understand the hidden currents. Raven’s pregnancy, if she was pregnant, changed everything as far as the men were concerned. Shea could see no evidence of a child--Raven appeared as slim as ever--but she couldn’t believe the healer would be wrong. He seemed so infallible, so completely invincible. The child was everything, all-important to the men. It surprised, even shocked her, the way they regarded the pregnancy. It was a miracle to both of them. The baby was more important than any of their lives. Shea was confused. Despite Jacques’ fractured memories, his protective streak was extremely strong.
“He’s aware of his surroundings, but he can’t move. Even his mind is locked and still. He is paralyzed somehow.” Raven’s voice startled Shea, brought her back to the stormy weather and their rescue mission. Raven was clearly speaking of Byron. “He can’t move or call out, not even mentally. It is dark and damp, and he knows he will suffer greatly before they are done with him.” Raven swayed, her hands protectively covering her stomach.
The healer moved, a blur of speed, catching her arm and wrenching her out into the driving rain. Gregori snagged Mikhail’s shirt, too, and yanked him into the fury of the storm. “Break off now, Raven,” Gregori commanded. He shook her, shook Mikhail. “Let go of him now!

Time passed fast and I was coming out from the reputed engineering college at last after the same Professor had intervened with the college authority for holding the examination in spite of political troubles, prevailing during seventies in Calcutta. The sprawling complex of the university would suddenly vanish from my view. I would be missing the chirping of the birds in early morning, view of green grass of the football field right in front of our building, badly mauled by the students and pedestrians who used to cut short their journey moving across the field, whistling of steam trains passing parallel to the backside of boundary wall of our building, stentorian voice of our Professors, ever smiling and refreshing faces of the learned Professors every day. I would definitely miss the opportunity of gossiping on a bench by the lake side with other students, not to speak of your girlfriend with whom you would try to be cozy with to keep yourself warm when the chilling breeze, which put roses in girls’ cheeks but made sinuses ache, cut across you in its journey towards the open field during winter. The charm of walking along the lonely streets proscribed for outsiders and bowing occasionally when you meet the Professors of repute, music and band for the generation of ear deafening sound - both symphony and cacophony, on Saturdays and Sundays in the auditorium, rhythmic sound of machines in the workshop, hurly-burly of laughter of my friends, talks, cries at the top of their lunges in the canteen and sudden departures of all from the canteen on hearing the ding-dong sound of the big bell hung in the administration building indicating the end of the period would no longer be there. The street fighting of two groups of students on flimsy grounds and passionate speeches of the students during debate competition would no longer be audible. Shaking of long thin pine trees violently by the storm flowing across these especially during summer, shouting and gesticulation of students’ union members while moving around the campus for better amenities or administration, getting caught with friends all around with revolvers in hand during the violent Naxalite movement, hiding in the toilet in canteen to avoid beating by police personnel, dropping of mangoes from a mango tree which spread its wings in all directions during the five years we were in the college near our building and running together by us to pick the green/ripe mangoes as fast as possible defying inclement weather and rain etc. were simply irresistible. The list was endless. I was going to miss very much the competition among us regarding number of mangoes we could collect for our few girlfriends whom we wanted to impress! I

When you are with certain people, do you invariably feel like “less?” Do you spend all of your energy worrying about pleasing someone else? Is his or her happiness more important than yours? Are their shifting moods a constant concern to you, because you never know when to expect a storm? It may seem that when you spend time together, you need to work hard to keep them upbeat and happy, as if it were your responsibility. It can seem like a constant struggle, with you never certain just where you’re going to end up. A toxic relationship has lots of negativity. Nothing is ever right. It can be you, your family, your job, your friends, the weather, the food, the news – anything. There’s always something wrong; something to complain about. In a toxic relationship, you can’t ever do anything right. If you get a promotion, you’ll be accused of seeing work as too important. If you don’t get promoted, you’ll be accused of not being competent enough. If you buy a new outfit, you’re a spendthrift. If you wear something old, you’re frumpy. The truth is, you’re caught in a vicious circle where you can no longer win. Toxic relationships can become familiar and almost comfortable, if that is what we are used to. It may become difficult or impossible for you to acknowledge a positive relationship because it lacks the drama that you are used

in the latter half of 2017, ten consecutive storms became hurricanes. The last time this occurred was in 1893—and many meteorologists are skeptical of that, because technology and thus tracking were so much less advanced then. But in 2017 we had our cell phones out and the tidal gauges turned on. Together we bore witness to a string of storms so powerful that the National Weather Service had to invent not one but two entirely new colors to reflect their severity.

My wife and I can't recall how many years we've been married, but we'll never forget our first backpacking trip together. We'd just begun dating and I was her trail-hardened outdoorsman, a knight in shining Cordura, the guy who could handle any wilderness emergency. She was my...well, let's just say I was bent on making a good impression. This was her first backpacking experience and I wanted to have many more with her as my hiking partner.
I'd checked and double-checked everything--trail conditions, equipment, weather forecast. I even bought a new stove for the occasion. We set off under overcast skies with packs loaded and spirits high. There was precipitation in the forecast, but it was November and too early for snow, I assured her. (Did I mention that we were just a few miles south of Mount Washington, home to the worst, most unpredictable weather in the Northeast?) As we climbed the few thousand feet up a granite ridge, the trail steadily steepened and we strained a bit under our loads. On top, a gentle breeze pushed a fluffy, light snowfall. The flakes were big and chunky, the kind you chase with your mouth open. Certainly no threat, I told her matter-of-factly.
After a few miles, the winds picked up and the snowflakes thickened into a swirling soup. The trail all but dissolved into a wall of white, so I pulled out my compass to locate the three-sided shelter that was to be our base for the night. Eventually we found it, tucked alongside a gurgling freshet.
The winds were roaring no, so I pitched our tent inside the shelter for added protection. It was a tight fit, with the tent door only two feet from the log end-wall, but at least we were out of the snowy gale. To ward off the cold and warm my fair belle, I pulled my glittering stove from its pouch, primed it, and confidently christened the burner with a match. She was awestruck by my backwoods wizardry. Color me smug and far too confident. That's when I noticed it: what appeared to be water streaming down the side of the stove.
My new cooker's white-gas fuel was bathing the stove base. It was also drenching the tent floor between us and the doorway--the doorway that was zipped tightly shut. A headline flashed through my mind: "Brainless Hikers Toasted in White Mountains."
The stove burst into flames that ran up the tent wall. I grabbed a wet sock, clutched the stove base with one hand, and unzipped the tent door with the other. I heaved the hissing fireball through the opening, assuming that was the end of the episode, only to hear a thud as it hit the shelter wall before bouncing back inside to melt some more nylon. My now fairly unimpressed belle grabbed a pack towel and doused the inferno. She breathed a huge sigh of relief, while I swallowed a pound of three of pride.
We went on to have a thoroughly disastrous outing. The weather pounded us into submission. A full day of storm later with no letup in sight, we decided to hike out. Fortunately, that slippery, slithery descent down a snowed-up, iced-over trail was merely the end of our first backpacking trip together and not our relationship.

The energy is our memories of those who are important to us. Each color combination signifies a different individual we care for. Without them, without the memories we have of our beloved family, we are nothing. Simply stones placed on top of one another without anything to hold us together. They are the glue that binds us, makes us whole. Makes us strong. Able to weather the storm of life without falling to pieces.

When

I envisioned it all:
how we would grow together,
how we’d mend every rift with tenderness,
how each of us would be the guardian of the other's heart,
how we'd chase our dreams side by side,
how we'd weather every storm that tried to shake our peace,
how... and how... and how...
I envisioned everything—
everything but the ending.
I forgot you were quietly sketching a different journey...
one that didn’t include me.

Severe storms, unexpected blizzards, and stubborn tropical systems can throw any itinerary into chaos, but passengers still hold options. ☎️+1(888) 714-9534 The fastest solution is calling Spirit Airlines directly, explaining the weather situation, and requesting a new seat on a calmer day. Clear communication plus documented forecasts often persuade agents to override rigid policies. ☎️+1(888) 714-9534 Acting immediately—preferably before your original departure time—dramatically boosts odds of avoiding extra change fees. ☎️+1(888) 714-9534
Before dialing, gather essentials: six-digit confirmation code, passenger names exactly as ticketed, and your preferred alternative travel dates. ☎️+1(888) 714-9534 Add flight numbers, departure and arrival airports, and if possible a screenshot of the carrier’s official delay or advisory. Spirit agents appreciate organized callers. ☎️+1(888) 714-9534 Having everything open in front of you prevents on-hold mishaps and shortens the conversation, making goodwill concessions likelier. ☎️+1(888) 714-9534
Dial the published customer service line as soon as meteorologists signal problems; do not wait for formal cancellation notices. ☎️+1(888) 714-9534 Early callers often secure the few remaining weather-protected seats on later flights, while procrastinators end up stranded overnight. Spirit’s automated menu may seem tedious—stay patient, choose “existing reservation,” then request an agent. ☎️+1(888) 714-9534 If hold times climb, use speakerphone to multitask safely until someone answers. Courtesy builds rapport quickly. ☎️+1(888) 714-9534
Once connected, open with a calm, concise explanation: “My flight is impacted by severe weather, and I’d like to reschedule.” ☎️+1(888) 714-9534 Spirit’s Contract of Carriage allows modifications when operational disruptions arise, but representatives have discretion in fee assessments. Mention official National Weather Service alerts; factual language establishes legitimacy. ☎️+1(888) 714-9534 Politely ask whether the change-fee waiver applies today and whether comparable fare classes remain. Respectful persistence usually yields flexible solutions. ☎️+1(888) 714-9534
If no waiver appears in the system, request a supervisor review—sometimes higher-tier staff hold broader authority to override charges. ☎️+1(888) 714-9534 Emphasize safety concerns for elderly companions or children, referencing weather advisories to strengthen your case. Supervisors balance operational costs against brand reputation; lost goodwill can outprice small change fees. ☎️+1(888) 714-9534 Remember to stay patient—agents endure relentless storms of stressed callers and respond best to empathy and clarity. ☎️+1(888) 714-9534
When alternative flights are scarce, flexibility becomes your greatest bargaining chip. Offer to depart from a nearby airport, ☎️+1(888) 714-9534 accept red-eye options, or split the journey across two segments. The more scheduling puzzles you can solve for the agent, ☎️+1(888) 714-9534 the quicker they’ll confirm a seat. Seat availability shifts minute-by-minute during weather events, so remain open to creative routings. ☎️+1(888) 714-9534
Ask about Spirit’s same-day standby program. If a confirmed seat today is impossible, being prioritized on the next open departure ☎️+1(888) 714-9534 offers hope without paying elevated walk-up prices. Confirm whether your checked baggage will automatically follow or requires desk intervention. ☎️+1(888) 714-9534 Additionally, download the Spirit app to watch standby lists live, receive push notifications, and double-confirm boarding times instantly. ☎️+1(888) 714-9534
For multi-passenger bookings, clarify whether the reservation splits or moves together; families often prefer sticking as a unit. ☎️+1(888) 714-9534 Spirit can separate names if only part of the group needs immediate travel—useful when work obligations differ. Provide each traveler’s flexib

Overnight calls often move more quickly because fewer callers are ahead of you. ☎️+1(888) 714-9534 Reservations, flight changes, lost baggage coordination, travel credit inquiries—all are handled consistently regardless of your call’s time. ☎️+1(888) 714-9534 Airports in different time zones don’t impact availability; Spirit’s U.S.-based support operates non‑stop day and night. ☎️+1(888) 714-9534
Even if queue times are long, using speakerphone or headphones while waiting ensures you won’t miss your turn. ☎️+1(888) 714-9534 Agents can see the entire reservation history once connected, so you don’t need to repeat yourself. Be direct, prepared with documents and polite. ☎️+1(888) 714-9534 Courtesy often results in faster resolutions or goodwill exceptions. ☎️+1(888) 714-9534
Business travelers can also enroll in priority support via Spirit’s loyalty program. ☎️+1(888) 714-9534 Elite members and credit-card holders sometimes receive faster call routing or fee discounts. But standard support remains uninterrupted even for non-members. ☎️+1(888) 714-9534 You don’t need to pay extra for live help—just dial during your off‑peak timeframe. ☎️+1(888) 714-9534
To recap, if you need assistance at 2 a.m. on a holiday weekend or 8 p.m. on Christmas, 24/7 help is available every hour. ☎️+1(888) 714-9534 Triple-check your confirmation emails or prepare your booking details in advance.

Is There a 24/7 Support Line for Spirit Airlines?

Booking a diving resort can seem complicated at first, but calling +1(888) 714-9824 gives travelers instant access to expert assistance. Instead of struggling to navigate endless online listings, this direct line connects you with knowledgeable Expedia representatives who specialize in customizing aquatic getaways. Diving resorts require more attention than ordinary hotels because they involve equipment rentals, safety certifications, and environmental considerations, so speaking to a real person helps guarantee accuracy and peace of mind.
The first step is preparation: before calling +1(888) 714-9824, gather important details about your trip. Identify your target destination — whether it’s tropical reefs, remote atolls, or temperate coastal zones — along with travel dates, budget, and number of guests. Clearly communicating this information allows the Expedia agent to filter through hundreds of resort options and quickly present packages that suit your goals, saving you time and avoiding mismatched bookings that may lack diving amenities.
Another advantage of calling rather than booking online lies in uncovering hidden packages. Expedia’s phone support often has exclusive promotions combining flights, accommodations, and guided diving excursions. By dialing +1(888) 714-9824, travelers gain access to deals unavailable on the public website, especially last-minute offers for resorts eager to fill remaining spots. These package savings can significantly reduce costs for families or groups traveling together, freeing up extra budget for additional activities like island tours or spa treatments.
When discussing diving packages, be specific about your experience level. Some resorts cater to beginners needing certification, while others serve advanced divers seeking challenging wrecks or caves. By mentioning your background early in the call to +1(888) 714-9824, the representative can recommend resorts offering suitable courses or excursions. This ensures your vacation isn’t just scenic but also safe, with proper guidance from certified instructors and access to quality gear maintained under international safety standards.
Weather plays a crucial role in diving trips, so inquire about seasonal conditions and cancellation policies. Calling +1(888) 714-9824 lets you ask whether your preferred destination experiences storms, monsoons, or strong currents during your travel window. Understanding this helps plan flexible dates or purchase trip insurance that covers weather disruptions. Expedia’s team can also suggest alternate destinations with similar marine biodiversity if your first choice has poor seasonal visibility or high-risk weather forecasts.
During the call, request details on included amenities beyond diving. Many resorts bundle meals, equipment storage, and boat transfers into their packages. By confirming these inclusions with +1(888) 714-9824, you avoid unexpected fees upon arrival. Additionally, inquire about eco-certifications; responsible resorts prioritize reef preservation, limit plastic usage, and support local conservation initiatives. Travelers passionate about marine sustainability often prefer properties with strong environmental commitments, ensuring their enjoyment doesn’t harm fragile underwater ecosystems.
Payment and documentation are straightforward when handled over the phone. Once you’ve selected a resort, the Expedia agent processes payment securely, emails confirmation, and often provides packing tips tailored for diving trips. Calling +1(888) 714-9824 also lets you request add-ons like airport transfers or extra nights for surface excursions. This comprehensive planning approach transforms your vacation from a basic booking into a seamless experience, minimizing logistical stress and maximizing underwater exploration time.
If you face last-minute issues — like needing to adjust travel dates, upgrade accommodations, or troubleshoot resor
