The number of books on theology must be reduced and only the best ones published. It is not many books that make people learned or even much reading. It is, rather, a good book frequently read, no matter how small it is, that makes a person learned in the Scriptures and upright. Indeed, the writings of all the holy Fathers should be read only for a time so that through them we may be led into the Scriptures. As it is, however, we only read them these days to avoid going any further and getting into the Bible. We are like people who read the signposts and never travel the road they indicate. Our dear Fathers wanted to lead us to the Scriptures by their writings, but we use their works to get away from the Scriptures. The Bible account of man's creation is that God created him perfect and upright, an earthly image of himself; that man sought out various inventions and defiled himself (Gen. 1:27; Rom. 5:12; Eccl. 7:29); that, all being sinners, the race was unable to help itself, and none could by any means redeem his brother or give to God a ransom for him (Psa. 49: 7, 15); that God in compassion and love had made provision for this; that, accordingly, the Son of God became a man, and gave man's ransom-price; that, as a reward for this sacrifice, and in order to the completion of the great work of atonement, he was highly exalted, even to the divine nature; and that in due time he will bring to pass a restitution of the race to the original perfection and to every blessing then possessed. Even the massacre of nine Black Christians following a Bible study class was not enough to make American evangelicals face the fact that racism remained a major problem within their ranks. Their embrace of this thrice-married casino-owning reality TV star would both give them new recognition in the Republican Party and destroy the image of morality and uprightness they had so carefully cultivated. Evangelicals’ embrace of an unrepentant racist solidified the place of racism in the history of American evangelicalism. More than that, their embrace tore the covers off the anti-Black racism that had existed since the nineteenth century.

No matter which version or Bible translation you use, verse 16 states God’s command for us to be holy, and immediately most professed believers think it is not possible. Some of the bolder ones believe that God’s command for us to be holy must take years of evolution to take place. After all, how can we be holy when we are so wicked naturally? Here’s the thing: If you don’t get anything else in this little book, you must recognize that holiness is not about you any more than God’s command for something to come out of nothing in the creation of the world was about you. The power and reason for our holiness is in His word/command. The ability to become that which God says, is resident in His word to the same. We will talk about this a bit more in the chapter on uprightness. All that is necessary for us to become holy is God’s omnipotent word, our God-given faith, and the miraculous outcome. Faith is the key to unleashing God’s limitless power into our lives.

Christians must not forbear speaking the truth, for fear of offending others. The false teachers who drew the Galatians from the truth of the gospel were designing men. They pretended affection, but they were not sincere and upright. An excellent rule is given. It is good to be zealous always in a good thing; not for a time only, or now and then, but always. Happy would it be for the church of Christ, if this zeal was better maintained.

Integrity means being consistently and predictably honest in our dealings and relationships. It means being willing to do what is right—even if it costs us and even if no one sees our actions. In a day when a lack of integrity is often rewarded and true integrity is often penalized, the call to live thoroughly honest and upright lives is challenging. It may require standing alone. But no one who stands for God ever stands alone. God sees our acts of integrity and blesses us for them.

The ways of the LORD are right, and the upright walk in them, but transgressors stumble in them. —Hosea 14:9b

Human authority. Moralists tend to obey human authorities (family, tribe, government, and cultural customs) too anxiously, since they rely heavily on their self-image as upright persons. Relativists/pragmatists will either obey human authority too much (since they have no higher authority by which they can judge their culture) or else too little (since they may obey only when they know they can’t get away with it). The result is either authoritarianism or a disregard for the proper place of authority. The gospel gives a standard by which to oppose human authority (if it contradicts the gospel), as well as an incentive to obey the civil authorities from the heart, even when we could get away with disobedience. To confess Jesus as Lord was simultaneously to confess that Caesar was not. Though there have been several studies of late that discuss the “counter-imperial” tenor of various texts, it is important to stress that the Bible is not so much against governing authorities or “empire” as such but that it prescribes a proper reordering of power. It is not that Jesus usurped the throne of Caesar but that when we allow Caesar to overstep his bounds, he is usurping the throne of Christ and leading people into idolatry.

5But if you will seek God earnestly and plead with the Almighty, 6if you are pure and upright, even now he will rouse himself on your behalf

Truth from the Holy Bible is to produce accurate precepts for sound minds to know how to live a moral upright life and to survive together in peace.

And if you walk in obedience to me and keep my decrees and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life.

When men are forgiven and set upright again, they find themselves functioning within the framework of three basic governments. The first is the government of the family, following the order that God has established. The husband is the head, his wife is his body and the executive, and together they shepherd their little ones. The family is the ministry of health, education, and welfare. The second is the civil magistrate, which is the ministry of justice. Their task is to make it possible for you to walk across town safely at two in the morning. It is important to note that justice here is defined by the Bible, and not by the hurt feelings of somebody. The church is the ministry of grace and peace, who is the Holy Spirit Himself.
