When you and your partner share an aspiration and a practice, there is no place for jealousy, because youβre both faithful to the same aspiration. Whatever the other person does, you do it with him. You share everything. That is the spirit of upeksha. It makes fidelity possible.
β
β
Thich Nhat Hanh (Fidelity: How to Create a Loving Relationship That Lasts)
β
Without upeksha, your love may become possessive. A summer breeze can be very refreshing; but if we try to put it in a tin can so we can have it entirely for ourselves, the breeze will die. Our beloved is the same. He is like a cloud, a breeze, a flower. If you imprison him in a tin can, he will die. Yet many people do just that. They rob their loved one of his liberty, until he can no longer be himself. They live to satisfy themselves and use their loved one to help them fulfill that. That is not loving; it is destroying.
β
β
Thich Nhat Hanh (The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching: Transforming Suffering into Peace, Joy, and Liberation)
β
True love is made of loving kindness (maitri), compassion (karuna), joy (mudita), and equanimity (upeksha). True love brings joy and peace, and relieves suffering.
β
β
Thich Nhat Hanh (Fidelity: How to Create a Loving Relationship That Lasts)
β
There are four elements that make up true love, the four immeasurable minds. They are maitri (loving kindness), karuna (compassion), mudita (joy), and upeksha (equanimity, nondiscrimination).
β
β
Thich Nhat Hanh (Reconciliation: Healing the Inner Child)
β
One day my left hand was holding a nail and my right hand a hammer. I was trying to hang a picture and I was not very mindful. Instead of pounding on the nail I pounded on the finger. Right away my right hand put the hammer down and took care of my left hand as if she were taking care of herself. My left hand didnβt get angry at my right hand, because she has the wisdom of nondiscrimination. My right hand didnβt say, βIβm taking care of you, left hand, you have to remember that.β My left hand didnβt say, βRight hand, you have done me an injustice; I want justice, give me that hammer.β Thereβs no you, no I, no discrimination; they are one. Itβs like the Trinity. God the Father is in God the Son; and the Holy Spirit is in the Son and in the Father. That is interbeing. In one you can see the other two. There was some pain, but both my hands shared the suffering, because in a loving relationship there is no discrimination. That is equanimity (upeksha).
