Psalm 34:18 says God is near to the brokenhearted. I truly believe it’s because when your heart is broken, so is your connection to all the worldly things that have been clouding your spirit’s vision.

A day will come when God will set everything right and wipe the tears from our eyes, and in that day death will be no more. But in the meantime, we can take comfort in the fact that God understands our pain. In our moments of immense grief and heartache, God is weeping with us. Scripture says that the Lord is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). He has a special place in His heart for hurting people. Therefore, far from being pointless, suffering is an opportunity to worship God and experience His loving presence in a deep and profound way.

Psalm 34 * Theme: God pays attention to those who call on him. Whether God offers escape from trouble or help in times of trouble, we can be certain that he always hears and acts on behalf of those who love him. Author: David, after pretending to be insane in order to escape from King Achish (1 Samuel 21:10-15) A psalm of David, regarding the time he pretended to be insane in front of Abimelech, who sent him away. 1I will praise the LORD at all times. I will constantly speak his praises. + 2I will boast only in the LORD; let all who are helpless take heart. + 3Come, let us tell of the LORD’s greatness; let us exalt his name together. 4I prayed to the LORD, and he answered me. He freed me from all my fears. 5Those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy; no shadow of shame will darken their faces. + 6In my desperation I prayed, and the LORD listened; he saved me from all my troubles. 7For the angel of the LORD is a guard; he surrounds and defends all who fear him. + 8Taste and see that the LORD is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him! + 9Fear the LORD, you his godly people, for those who fear him will have all they need. + 10Even strong young lions sometimes go hungry, but those who trust in the LORD will lack no good thing. + 11Come, my children, and listen to me, and I will teach you to fear the LORD. + 12Does anyone want to live a life that is long and prosperous? + 13Then keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies! + 14Turn away from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work to maintain it. + 15The eyes of the LORD watch over those who do right; his ears are open to their cries for help. + 16But the LORD turns his face against those who do evil; he will erase their memory from the earth. + 17The LORD hears his people when they call to him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles. 18The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed. + 19The righteous person faces many troubles, but the LORD comes to the rescue each time. + 20For the LORD protects the bones of the righteous; not one of them is broken! 21Calamity will surely destroy the wicked, and those who hate the righteous will be punished. + 22But the LORD will redeem those who serve him. No one who takes refuge in him will be condemned.

God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 2 TIMOTHY 1:7 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. 1 JOHN 4:18 The fear of man brings a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD shall be safe. PROVERBS 29:25 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. ROMANS 8:38 NLT There may be something on your mind—a sin, a bad decision, someone’s rejection, or a particular trial—that makes you feel as if the Father does not or could not love you. However, once you believe in Jesus as your Lord and Savior, nothing can separate you from His love. Not people. Not circumstances. Not angels, nor demons, nor the enemy’s entire army. Absolutely nothing. Psalm 34:18 is clear, “The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” So when you feel at your most unworthy or defeated is when the Father is closest, tenderly bidding you to return to Him. The most dangerous move you can make is to resist His love. So seek His face. Confess your failings. Ask Him to teach you. Thank Him for inviting you back. Then praise His holy name and love Him in return. Lord, thank You for accepting me. I am so grateful for Your wonderful, unconditional, unchanging love. Help me hear Your voice, amen.

We are known and loved by a God who collects our tears in a bottle (Psalm 56:8) and promises He is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). There is no darkness His love cannot break through (Romans 8:38-39) and no suffering that will ever go to waste when we trust in Him (Romans 8:28). He is always working for our good and He is always on our side (Romans 8:32). There is no sin His blood cannot cover and no story of redemption better than what He has offered to us all (1 John 1:9).

The spiritual problem behind men who mistreat women and children is often rooted in a deep-seated issue of:
1. Lack of self-control and submission to God (Proverbs 25:28)
2. Pride and arrogance (Proverbs 21:24)
3. Unforgiveness and bitterness (Matthew 6:15)
4. Unrepentant heart and refusal to seek help (Proverbs 29:1)
5. Disconnection from God's love and grace (1 John 4:8)
6. Satanic influence and deception (Ephesians 6:12)
7. Unhealed trauma and pain (Psalm 34:18)
8. Misunderstanding of masculinity and strength (Matthew 20:25-28)
9. Rebellion against God's design and authority (Romans 8:7)
10. Blindness to the value and dignity of women and children (Psalm 139:13-14)
These spiritual issues can lead men to perpetuate harm and abuse, causing destruction and pain in the lives of those around them. However, with repentance, seeking help, and surrender to God, healing and transformation are possible (2 Corinthians 5:17).

tn Heb “like a lion, my hands and my feet.” This reading is often emended because it is grammatically awkward, but perhaps its awkwardness is by rhetorical design. Its broken syntax may be intended to convey the panic and terror felt by the psalmist. The psalmist may envision a lion pinning the hands and feet of its victim to the ground with its paws (a scene depicted in ancient Near Eastern art), or a lion biting the hands and feet. The line has been traditionally translated, “they pierce my hands and feet,” and then taken as foreshadowing the crucifixion of Christ. Though Jesus does appropriate the language of this psalm while on the cross (compare v. 1 with Matt 27:46 and Mark 15:34), the NT does not cite this verse in describing the death of Jesus. (It does refer to vv. 7-8 and 18, however. See Matt 27:35, 39, 43; Mark 15:24, 29; Luke 23:34; John 19:23-24.) If one were to insist on an emendation of כָּאֲרִי (ka’ariy, “like a lion”) to a verb, the most likely verbal root would be כָּרָה (karah, “dig”; see the LXX). In this context this verb could refer to the gnawing and tearing of wild dogs (cf. NCV, TEV, CEV). The ancient Greek version produced by Symmachus reads “bind” here, perhaps understanding a verbal root כרך, which is attested in later Hebrew and Aramaic and means “to encircle, entwine, embrace” (see HALOT 497-98 s.v. כרך and Jastrow 668 s.v. כָּרַךְ). Neither one of these proposed verbs can yield a meaning “bore, pierce.
