During the era of the rightly-guided Khaleefahs, the Muslim Nation was built on the principle of justice. This is mainly why Muslims were so prosperous during those times. Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) wrote, “Verily, Allah helps a just country, even if its people are disbelievers; and He does not help a wrongdoing, oppressive country, even if its people are Muslims. It is through justice that men become upright, and it is through justice that wealth becomes abundant [among a people].

Ibn Ishaq has recorded that Makkan ladies were once gathered around Ka’abah on the occasion of a festival. Hubal’s idol was set up in the vicinity of Ka’abah along with numerous smaller idols. Pilgrims not only circumambulated Ka’abah, but also prostrated before the idols and invoked them to fulfill their needs. Khadijah (May Allah be pleased with her) was also present on the occasion. The gathering of women, consisting of old as well young, rich as well as poor, assumed divinity in the idols and paid them respects. A Jewish man who witnessed the occasion observed the women for some time, then spoke, “Respected ladies! A Messenger of God is due to arrive amongst you. Whoever of you finds the opportunity to marry him should do so.” The chitchat of the ladies was suspended for a moment. They were astonished by what the man had just said. They wondered who this man was and what he meant. Then some of them said he was not one of the Makkans. They thought he had mocked them and insulted their deities. Some of them started yelling at him. Others picked up stones and pebbles and hurled at him. With the exception of Khadijah, every other woman participated in scorning the man. It is recorded that Khadijah (May Allah be pleased with her) chose not to speak in defense of the false deities and remained silent. Khadijah (May Allah be pleased with her) did not sympathize with the idols and the false deities even before Islam.

Poppies in Afghanistan: The Taliban
and the Heroin Trade
Harvesting opium in Afghanistan
Ghaffar Baig/ Reuters/Corbis
Most Americans knew little about Afghanistan or
the Taliban prior to September 11, 2001, but those
who follow the heroin trade have focused on
Afghanistan for decades. Afghanistan has long been
a major area of opium production, but the “golden
triangle” of Southeast Asia (Burma, Laos, and
Thailand) historically dominated opium production.
By 1999, though, Afghanistan had become the
undisputed world leader in opium production
despite being an Islamic state ruled by the Taliban,
which publicly opposed opium use. In 1999, the
Taliban representative to the United States, Abdul
Hakeem Mujahid, said, “We are against poppy
cultivation, narcotics production and drugs, but we
cannot fight our own people” (Bartolet & Levine,
2001, p. 85). Even before 9/11, the United States
accused the Taliban of profiting from opium and
heroin production, and using those profits to fund
terrorist activities. Under pressure from the United
Nations, the Taliban announced bans on poppy
cultivation in 1997, 1998, and 2000, but there was
little evidence of any decreased production. In 2001,
though, a ban was put into place that apparently
really did reduce poppy production. Cynics have
pointed out that the Taliban was simply trying to
increase prices by temporarily cutting the supply;
whatever the reason, when the Taliban lost control
of Afghanistan, the poppy made a comeback. In this
war-ravaged and economically depressed nation,
growing opium is one of the few ways that farmers
can make a living. Afghan President Hamid Karzai
has urged his people to declare jihad (holy war) on
drug production, but opium farming still accounts
for nearly half of the domestic economy, and
Afghanistan supplies nearly 80% of the world’s
heroin (Office of National Drug Control Policy,
2013). In recent years, opium production has
declined in Afghanistan, but a close relationship
between heroin traffickers and the insurgency
continues to create difficulties for that country’s
reconstruction process (Office of National Drug
Control Policy, 2013).

European converts to Islam were more vulnerable to extremist groups because many lacked this lifelong socialization. Many came from deprived social backgrounds and were primed to be drawn to aggressive, militant strains of anything, from local gangs to local extremist ideologues. They were quick to subsume their personal grudges against family and society into transnational political grudges against the West. Cuspert fell readily into the arms of shadowy German jihadist figures who promised that extreme stance.
In fact, Cuspert didn't convert to Islam so much as initiate himself straight into a radical Islamist group called The True Religion. It was as though he had pressed a button and changed the aesthetic theme of the WordPress site of his life from gangsta to mujahid; the chaotic structure and violent impulses were all the same, but were now overlaid with Islamist imagery and themes. Suddenly causes like Iraq, Chechnya, and Afghanistan mattered to him deeply, and Germans, Westerners, and a broad swath of humanity became "unbelievers" who were complicit in Muslim suffering.
His old friends on the Berlin rap scene were devastated, and furious. They were from "good enough" Muslim families and were adept at living and rapping about the painful contradictions. They didn't turn to violence. They all knew where the lines were. His record producer later complained bitterly about Cuspert's betrayal: "He disgraced everyone, all of the Muslim MCs. He ruined the community. May Allah forgive him. But we don't.
