You're welcome to join us again sometime," Bella said....
"Right. Well, I don't know." Sam looked at the ground. scuffing one boot in the dirt. "I'm usually not very good company."
"I'm hanging out with a teenager and a temperamental cat." Bella said with a small smile. "The bar is set very low around here.

I hear the drill instructors in my sleep yelling βpivot, align to the right, cover, donβt close up, and donβt rush it!β We drill for hours on end it seems like. I feel like I am marching in my sleep. Antwon Carlton actually did march in his sleep. Tyler was on Firewatch duty night before last and Carlton came marching by in his sleep. Tyler called out βPivot, back to the rack recruit!β It worked, and big bad Carlton marched back to his bunk. Tyler had everyone laughing about it-you know he didnβt keep it to himself.

She has slept she realises. It seems almost disrespectful how easily sleep claimed her. Not that she feels rested in any real sense, but still, she's sure Edna wouldn't approve. She stands and walks to the window, The day is to be bright and hot. The weather has made no allowance for her loss. On the contrary, the summer has made another assault on them, fighting to the last. The end of the world is surprisingly pleasant.

I thought of a sign I had seen... another scary time, when I was two hundred feet up in a giant karri tree in South West Australia. At the point where the precarious spiral ladder grew even steeper and narrower to reach the fire-watch platform atop the tree, the sign said: 'Reassess Your Situation Now: Turn Back if You Are Not Comfortable'. Then, as now, that seemed like damn good advice.
