Sometimes we do hard things not for ourselves, but to make things easier for someone else.

Amy thought about how many perfectly good ideas were probably floating around in the universe because people didn't take time to capture them by writing them down.

When you're brave and honest, you make it easier for the next person. Like Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson. Thurgood Marshall. Ruby Bridges.....Jenna Talackova. Janet Mock. Lavern Cox. Jenny Boylan...I'm not saying it's easy. I'm saying it's important, not only for you but for the next person.

Besides, motels cost money, and last time I checked, you’re not Donald Trump.” “Of course I’m not Donald Trump,” Zeyde says. “He has hair.

Inside my best friend’s kitchen, blood spatters cover every surface—the kitchen table, including the pepper mill, the wall behind the table and much of the tile floor. Even their cat, Psycho, has a blood spatter across her white fur. My eyes, open wide with horror, take in each gruesome detail. Lying on the blood-spattered floor with a cleaver buried in his chest is my best friend’s dad, Mr. Taylor. He’s wearing his chef’s apron from Chez Gourmet, but the apron is more red than white. A trickle of blood leaks from the side of his mouth and drips into his beard, then onto the sticky floor.

She showed me a statistic. Forty-three percent of transgender kids try to kill themselves.” Dad sniffs again, hard. “Then she said, ‘Would you rather have a dead son or a live daughter?’ ” “Oh, Dad.” I put a hand over my mouth. “She explained that kids who get a lot of love and support have a much lower suicide risk.

Mr. Schu nodded, because he knew magic could happen in the library - all kinds of magic, not just book magic. And he was like the magician who helped it happen. Libraries and good librarians are wonder-filled like that. If you don't believe me, it's probably because you haven't discovered a magical library or librarian...yet.
I hope you do, though. They can make a life-changing difference. You just don't always realize it at the time. Libraries can help you fall in love with science or travel or math or...imagination from so many people across so many times. Quite a wondrous thing, if you stop and think about it.

In front of her, off to the right, a word that caught Amy's attention. That word was salve for her hurting heart. A single word that filled her with lightness, each letter a flick of hope.
LIBRARY.
