Marginalia
Sometimes the notes are ferocious,
skirmishes against the author
raging along the borders of every page
in tiny black script.
If I could just get my hands on you,
Kierkegaard, or Conor Cruise O'Brien,
they seem to say,
I would bolt the door and beat some logic into your head.
Other comments are more offhand, dismissive -
Nonsense." "Please!" "HA!!" -
that kind of thing.
I remember once looking up from my reading,
my thumb as a bookmark,
trying to imagine what the person must look like
who wrote "Don't be a ninny"
alongside a paragraph in The Life of Emily Dickinson.
Students are more modest
needing to leave only their splayed footprints
along the shore of the page.
One scrawls "Metaphor" next to a stanza of Eliot's.
Another notes the presence of "Irony"
fifty times outside the paragraphs of A Modest Proposal.
Or they are fans who cheer from the empty bleachers,
Hands cupped around their mouths.
Absolutely," they shout
to Duns Scotus and James Baldwin.
Yes." "Bull's-eye." "My man!"
Check marks, asterisks, and exclamation points
rain down along the sidelines.
And if you have managed to graduate from college
without ever having written "Man vs. Nature"
in a margin, perhaps now
is the time to take one step forward.
We have all seized the white perimeter as our own
and reached for a pen if only to show
we did not just laze in an armchair turning pages;
we pressed a thought into the wayside,
planted an impression along the verge.
Even Irish monks in their cold scriptoria
jotted along the borders of the Gospels
brief asides about the pains of copying,
a bird singing near their window,
or the sunlight that illuminated their page-
anonymous men catching a ride into the future
on a vessel more lasting than themselves.
And you have not read Joshua Reynolds,
they say, until you have read him
enwreathed with Blake's furious scribbling.
Yet the one I think of most often,
the one that dangles from me like a locket,
was written in the copy of Catcher in the Rye
I borrowed from the local library
one slow, hot summer.
I was just beginning high school then,
reading books on a davenport in my parents' living room,
and I cannot tell you
how vastly my loneliness was deepened,
how poignant and amplified the world before me seemed,
when I found on one page
A few greasy looking smears
and next to them, written in soft pencil-
by a beautiful girl, I could tell,
whom I would never meet-
Pardon the egg salad stains, but I'm in love.

According to a 2012 Gallup survey, only 15 per cent of Americans think that Homo sapiens evolved through natural selection alone, free of all divine intervention; 32 per cent maintain that humans may have evolved from earlier life forms in a process lasting millions of years, but God orchestrated this entire show; 46 per cent believe that God created humans in their current form sometime during the last 10,000 years, just as the Bible says. Spending three years in college has absolutely no impact on these views. The same survey found that among BA graduates, 46 per cent believe in the biblical creation story, whereas only 14 per cent think that humans evolved without any divine supervision. Even among holders of MA and PhD degrees, 25 per cent believe the Bible, whereas only 29 per cent credit natural selection alone with the creation of our species.1

After several professional geologists refused his invitation, the captain offered the job to a twenty-two-year-old Cambridge graduate, Charles Darwin. Darwin had studied to become an Anglican parson but was far more interested in geology and natural sciences than in the Bible. He jumped at the opportunity, and the rest is history. I know that we all think we're immortal,
we're supposed to feel that way, we're graduating.
The future is and should be bright, but,
like our brief four years in high school,
what makes life valuable is that it doesn't last forever,
what makes it precious is that it ends.
I know that now more than ever.
And I say it today of all days to remind us that time is luck.
So don't waste it living someone else's life,
make yours count for something.
Fight for what matters to you, no matter what.
Because even if you fall short, what better way is there to live?
It's easy to feel hopeful on a beautiful day like today,
but there will be dark days ahead of us too,
and there'll be days where you feel all alone,
and that's when hope is needed most.
Keep it alive. No matter how buried it gets,
or lost you feel, you must promise me,
that you will hold on to hope and keep it alive.
We have to be greater than what we suffer.
My wish for you, is to become hope. People need that.
I know it feels like we're saying goodbye,
but we will carry a piece of each other into everything that we do next,
to remind us of who we are, and of who we're meant to be.
I've had a great four years with you,
and I'll miss you all very much.

Tolerable stress, which occurs for relatively brief periods, can also build resilience. Critically, there must be supportive adults present, and kids must have time to cope and recover. Let’s say a child witnesses her parents arguing a lot as they’re going through a divorce. But the parents are talking to her, and they’re not having blowouts every night. She has time to recover. This is tolerable stress. Another example of tolerable stress might be an episode of being bullied, so long as it doesn’t last too long, it isn’t repeated too often, and the child is supported by caring adults. A tolerable stress might even be a death in the family. In an influential study, graduate students took baby rats away from their mothers and handled them for fifteen minutes per day (which was stressful to the rats) and then returned them to their mothers, who licked and groomed them. The graduate students repeated this for the first two weeks of the rats’ lives. The baby rats who were removed and handled for a brief period showed much more resilience as adults than the pups who stayed in the cage with their mother.11 The researchers referred to them as “California laid-back rats,” as they were difficult to stress as adults. This is probably because in situations like these the brain becomes conditioned to cope, and this conditioning lays the foundation for resilience.

Why did people make such a fateful miscalculation? For the same reason that people throughout history have miscalculated. People were unable to fathom the full consequences of their decisions. Whenever they decided to do a bit of extra work – say, to hoe the fields instead of scattering seeds on the surface – people thought, ‘Yes, we will have to work harder. But the harvest will be so bountiful! We won’t have to worry any more about lean years. Our children will never go to sleep hungry.’ It made sense. If you worked harder, you would have a better life. That was the plan. The first part of the plan went smoothly. People indeed worked harder. But people did not foresee that the number of children would increase, meaning that the extra wheat would have to be shared between more children. Neither did the early farmers understand that feeding children with more porridge and less breast milk would weaken their immune system, and that permanent settlements would be hotbeds for infectious diseases. They did not foresee that by increasing their dependence on a single source of food, they were actually exposing themselves even more to the depredations of drought. Nor did the farmers foresee that in good years their bulging granaries would tempt thieves and enemies, compelling them to start building walls and doing guard duty. Then why didn’t humans abandon farming when the plan backfired? Partly because it took generations for the small changes to accumulate and transform society and, by then, nobody remembered that they had ever lived differently. And partly because population growth burned humanity’s boats. If the adoption of ploughing increased a village’s population from 100 to 110, which ten people would have volunteered to starve so that the others could go back to the good old times? There was no going back. The trap snapped shut. The pursuit of an easier life resulted in much hardship, and not for the last time. It happens to us today. The Alvarez hypothesis did much to focus paleontological thinking on mass extinction, while further impetus came from another project that took shape about the same time. When I was a graduate student in the 1970s, my friend and fellow student Jack Sepkoski started to tabulate fossil diversity through time. Jack wasn’t the first to try this, but his perseverance and attention to detail enabled him to put together a remarkable database of the first and last appearances of every order, family and, eventually, genus of marine animals found in the fossil record. (Jack stayed away from tabulating species, correctly intuiting that the record at that level of detail would be prone to biases related to sediment abundance and the habits of collectors.) Jack’s data showed that the course of biological diversification never did run smooth.

Back to School As surreal as being a grown adult in high school was, it was also brief: in only one semester I had completed enough credits to obtain my diploma. From there I went directly to the “Adult Entry Program” at my local university and enrolled. I would spend one semester in remedial classes to catch up on missing prerequisites and then college would begin in earnest. One might imagine that by now I would have learned that being a good student takes significant effort, but I continued to coast my first semester, missing classes, and skipping homework. Then, one time after missing a few days in a row, I returned to discover the professor handing back a midterm exam –– one that I had not written! Apparently, I had skipped class that day. Although it would not lead to me failing the class (and as a remedial class it would not affect my overall grade,) it did require a “mercy pass” on the part of the instructor to get me through. The approach I’d been following all along simply wasn’t working. I had the right goals now but evidently I still lacked the right approach. As I think it might be for many people, the fundamental shift in how I went about things came with the realization that I was not going to school because I had to. No one was making me go. I was there of my own accord, for my own purposes and reasons. This understanding completely transformed the way I went about school; from that point forward, I treated it as something I wanted for myself, and I worked accordingly. By the end of my next semester, I was on the academic Dean’s List, and I would graduate with Great Distinction from the Honors program four years later.

In the following days, the first opposition party was founded and my parents revealed the truth, their truth. They said that my country had been an open-air prison for almost half a century. That the universities which had haunted my family were, yes, educational institutions, but of a peculiar kind. That when my family spoke of the graduation of relatives, what they really meant was their recent release from prison. That completing a degree was coded language for completing a sentence. That what had been referred to as the initials of university towns were actually the initials of various prisons and deportation sites: B. for Burrel, M. for Maliq, S. for Spaç. That the different subjects of study corresponded to different official charges: to study international relations meant to be charged with treason; literature stood for 'agitation and propaganda'; and a degree in economics entailed a more minor crime, such as 'hiding gold'. That students who become teachers were former prisoners who converted to being spies, like our cousin Ahmet and his late wife. Sonia. That a harsh professor was an official at whose hands many people had lost their lives, like Haki, with whom my grandfather had shaken hands after serving his sentence. That f someone had achieved excellent results, it meant the stint had been brief and straightforward; but being expelled meant a death sentence; and dropping out voluntarily meant committing suicide.

The momentum present when you are a graduate is so powerful, and your learning curve so steep, that the confidence, talent, enthusiasm, individuality, skill and employability present at this time must be capitalized on; these are the attributes that employers are looking for. Breaking this momentum hinders much more than it helps. Your portfolio, if left unattended, becomes static, while your confidence, once battling with people your own age and often showing similar projects and responses to briefs, can take a big hit as the next year group steps up. And, above all – no matter how shallow it sounds – the reflection cast by a break in your career can be interpreted as a loss of love for what you do.

Some people—like the engineers and executives of high-tech corporations—are way ahead of politicians and voters and are better informed than most of us about the development of AI, cryptocurrencies, social credits, and the like. Unfortunately, most of them don’t use their knowledge to help regulate the explosive potential of the new technologies. Instead, they use it to make billions of dollars—or to accumulate petabits of information. There are exceptions, like Audrey Tang. She was a leading hacker and software engineer who in 2014 joined the Sunflower Student Movement, which protested against government policies in Taiwan. The Taiwanese cabinet was so impressed by her skills that Tang was eventually invited to join the government as its minister of digital affairs. In that position, she helped make the government’s work more transparent to citizens. She was also credited with using digital tools to help Taiwan successfully contain the COVID-19 outbreak. Yet Tang’s political commitment and career path are not the norm. For every computer-science graduate who wants to be the next Audrey Tang, there are probably many more who want to be the next Jobs, Zuckerberg, or Musk and build a multibillion-dollar corporation rather than become an elected public servant. This leads to a dangerous information asymmetry. The people who lead the information revolution know far more about the underlying technology than the people who are supposed to regulate it.

Benton’s ex-wife, Connie, wasn’t as interested in him as in the Wesley family money. He didn’t share his work with her, nor did she want to hear about it. And my first husband was forgettable, my brief marriage to Tony by prescription. I thought it the sensible thing to do after graduate school, for reasons I don’t entirely understand. I suspect that it had much to do with my mother and Dorothy, both worried I’d never find anyone. “There’s nothing I regret about you.” I tell Benton the truth. “There’s no one I want to be with more.” “No one? Not even Sal?” “Not even close.” “I’m glad to hear it.” “You shouldn’t need to hear it. But regardless of what we think we know, we can get surprised.” I take another swallow of my drink as it melts away inhibitions that hold me tightly wrapped. “And I was surprised to realize you told your colleagues about my history with Sal before discussing it with me first.” “I should have said something to you earlier.” Benton uncorks the bottle again. “Yes, you should have.” “I’m sorry.” “Why didn’t you?” “The professional thing was to inform those involved that you and Sal were close. In fact, you were lovers once.” “In another life.” “It could cause trouble if not handled appropriately. It doesn’t matter how long ago.” He splashes more tequila into his glass, and it’s not like him to drink this much. “Mainly, I was thinking of what the media will do when it’s discovered that you did the autopsy. I wanted us getting on top of it with full disclosure.” “That’s what you told yourself, but it’s not the real reason,” I reply. “My early relationship with Sal bothers you, and you didn’t want your colleagues thinking that it did. So, you volunteered my business for me. As if to imply my past was no big deal to you. That you were comfortable discussing it. And that the information was yours to offer when it wasn’t.” “Ouch. That sounds petty. Not to mention damn stupid. I would have hoped I’m better than that.” He swirls the drink in his glass. “We’re all capable.” “I admit it gets under my skin that you two were together first. BEST CRYPTO RECOVERY SERVICES: HIRE A LICENSED CRYPTOCURRENCY RECOVERY EXPERT-FUNDS RETRIEVER ENGINEER
During my academic journey at the University of Denver I was always eager to explore new opportunities and cultivate a successful career. After graduation I dedicated my efforts to securing remote positions in the fintech sector a field that captivated my interest. A few months ago I received an enticing offer from a blockchain company for a role in payroll processing. Everything about the company appeared legitimate; their website was meticulously designed the interviews were conducted with professionalism and they provided corporate documents that seemed authentic. I felt a surge of excitement as I envisioned my future with them. As part of the onboarding process they informed me that I would need to complete a brief training phase. To participate they requested a deposit of $45,000 in USDT asserting that the funds would be cycled through a mock payroll system. Despite a nagging suspicion that something was amiss I convinced myself that their documentation was credible and the onboarding team was remarkably responsive almost insistent. Trusting my instincts I proceeded to transfer the funds believing I was making a prudent investment in my career. within just a few hours everything took a drastic turn. Communication abruptly ceased; emails went unanswered the Telegram accounts I had been in contact with vanished and the company website suddenly displayed a 404 error. A sinking feeling enveloped me as I realized that I had fallen victim to a scam. I discovered FUNDS RETRIEVER ENGINEER a group that specializes in cyber fraud and cryptocurrency scams. I reached out to them immediately not expecting much; I was acutely aware of how challenging it could be to trace and recover cryptocurrency. To my astonishment their employment scam analysts swiftly sprang into action. They identified several red flags in the corporate documents I had received and confirmed that they were fabricated using digital templates. More importantly they traced the USDT transaction to an OTC merchant on Huobi a platform often utilized to obscure fund trails. Through coordinated efforts involving on-chain analytics legal notifications and collaboration with exchange compliance departments FUNDS RETRIEVER ENGINEER successfully intercepted and recovered $42,000 USDT within just 24 hours of being engaged. This outcome exceeded all my expectations. If you’ve been targeted or scammed by fraudulent job offers involving cryptocurrency do not lose hope. FUNDS RETRIEVER ENGINEER may be the team that can assist you in reclaiming your lost funds they certainly did for me.

【V信83113305】:King's College, now Columbia University, stands as a cornerstone of American intellectual history. Founded in 1754 by royal charter from King George II, it was originally an Anglican institution designed to educate the colony's elite. Its location in New York City placed it at the heart of the growing tensions that would lead to the American Revolution. The college's brief existence under its original name was profoundly interrupted by the war, suspending instruction for eight years as its building was occupied by both British and American troops. Despite this turbulent beginning, its early graduates included foundational American figures such as Alexander Hamilton and John Jay. The post-war reorganization and renaming to Columbia in 1784 marked a new chapter, symbolizing a break from its colonial past. The legacy of King's College is thus deeply woven into the nation's fabric, representing both its colonial origins and its revolutionary transformation into a independent republic.,【V信83113305】定制-国王学院毕业证KC毕业证书,国王学院毕业证KC毕业证学校原版100%一样,KC国王学院毕业证书加急制作,KC国王学院毕业证学校原版一样吗,加急定制-KC学位证国王学院毕业证书,一比一制作-KC文凭证书国王学院毕业证,百分比满意度-KC国王学院毕业证,100%满意-KC毕业证国王学院学位证,100%收到-KC毕业证书国王学院毕业证,100%加急制作-KC毕业证学校原版一样
