Beautiful Sri Lanka Quotes

Sri Lanka is a beautiful little island nation parked perilously close to India; a little too hot, a little too humid, and perhaps too expensive, but to its credit are fantastic beaches, strangely melancholy hills, and the ruins of kingdoms past.
Yudhanjaya Wijeratne (Numbercaste)
Look at Ireland with its Protestant and Catholic populations, Canada with its French and English populations, Israel with its Jewish and Palestinian populations. Or consider the warring factions in India, Sri Lanka, China, Iraq, Czechoslovakia (until it happily split up), the Balkans, and Chechnya. Also review the festering hotbeds of tribal warfare—I mean the “beautiful mosaic”—in Third World disasters like Afghanistan, Rwanda, and South Central LA. If diversity is their strength, I’d hate to see what their weakness is. The fact that we have to be incessantly told how wonderful diversity is only proves that it’s not. It’s like listening to a waiter try to palm off the fish “special” on you before it goes bad.
Ann Coulter (¡Adios, America!: The Left's Plan to Turn Our Country into a Third World Hellhole)
A beautiful example of a long-term intention was presented by A. T. Ariyaratane, a Buddhist elder, who is considered to be the Gandhi of Sri Lanka. For seventeen years there had been a terrible civil war in Sri Lanka. At one point, the Norwegians were able to broker peace, and once the peace treaty was in effect, Ariyaratane called the followers of his Sarvodaya movement together. Sarvodaya combines Buddhist principles of right livelihood, right action, right understanding, and compassion and has organized citizens in one-third of that nation’s villages to dig wells, build schools, meditate, and collaborate as a form of spiritual practice. Over 650,000 people came to the gathering to hear how he envisioned the future of Sri Lanka. At this gathering he proposed a five-hundred-year peace plan, saying, “The Buddha teaches we must understand causes and conditions. It’s taken us five hundred years to create the suffering that we are in now.” Ari described the effects of four hundred years of colonialism, of five hundred years of struggle between Hindus, Muslims, and Buddhists, and of several centuries of economic disparity. He went on, “It will take us five hundred years to change these conditions.” Ariyaratane then offered solutions, proposing a plan to heal the country. The plan begins with five years of cease-fire and ten years of rebuilding roads and schools. Then it goes on for twenty-five years of programs to learn one another’s languages and cultures, and fifty years of work to right economic injustice, and to bring the islanders back together as a whole. And every hundred years there will be a grand council of elders to take stock on how the plan is going. This is a sacred intention, the long-term vision of an elder. In the same way, if we envision the fulfillment of wisdom and compassion in the United States, it becomes clear that the richest nation on earth must provide health care for its children; that the most productive nation on earth must find ways to combine trade with justice; that a creative society must find ways to grow and to protect the environment and plan sustainable development for generations ahead. A nation founded on democracy must bring enfranchisement to all citizens at home and then offer the same spirit of international cooperation and respect globally. We are all in this together.
Jack Kornfield (Bringing Home the Dharma: Awakening Right Where You Are)
The path dips down to Gal Vihara: a wide, quiet, hollow, surrounded with trees. A low outcrop of rock, with a cave cut into it, and beside the cave a big seated Buddha on the left, a reclining Buddha on the right, and Ananda, I guess, standing by the head of the reclining Buddha. In the cave, another seated Buddha. The vicar general, shying away from "paganism." hangs back and sits under a tree reading the guidebook. I am able to approach the Buddhas barefoot and undisturbed, my feet in wet grass, wet sand. Then the silence of the extraordinary faces. The great smiles. Huge and yet subtle. Filled with every possibility, questioning nothing, knowing everything, rejecting nothing, the peace not of emotional resignation but of Madhyamika, of sunyata, that has seen through every question without trying to discredit anyone or anything - without refutation - without establishing some other argument. For the doctrinaire, the mind that needs well-established positions, such peace, such silence, can be frightening. I was knocked over with a rush of relief and thankfulness at the obvious clarity of the figures, the clarity and fluidity of shape and line, the design of the monumental bodies composed into the rock shape and landscape, figure, rock and tree. And the sweep of bare rock sloping away on the other side of the hollow, where you can go back and see different aspects of the figures. Looking at these figures I was suddenly, almost forcibly, jerked clean out of the habitual, half-tied vision of things, and an inner clearness, clarity, as if exploding from the rocks themselves, became evident and obvious. The queer evidence of the reclining figure, the smile, the sad smile of Ananda standing with arms folded (much more "imperative" than Da Vinci's Mona Lisa because completely simple and straightforward). The thing about all this is that there is no puzzle, no problem, and really no "mystery." All problems are resolved and everything is clear, simply because what matters is clear. The rock, all matter, all life, is charged with dharmakaya... everything is emptiness and everything is compassion. I don't know when in my life I have ever had such a sense of beauty and spiritual validity running together in one aesthetic illumination. Surely, with Mahabalipuram and Polonnaruwa my Asian pilgrimage has come clear and purified itself. I mean, I know and have seen what I was obscurely looking for. I don't know what else remains but I have now seen and have pierced through the surface and have got beyond the shadow and the disguise. This is Asia in its purity, not covered over with garbage, Asian or European or American, and it is clear, pure, complete. It says everything: it needs nothing. And because it needs nothing it can afford to be silent, unnoticed, undiscovered. It does not need to be discovered. It is we, Asians included, who need to discover it. The whole thing is very much a Zen Garden, a span of bareness and openness and evidence, and the great figures, motionless, yet with the lines in full movement, waves of vesture and bodily form, a beautiful and holy vision. The rest of the "city", the old palace complex, I had no time for. We just drove around the roads and saw the ruined shapes, and started on the long drive home to Kandy.

India and Pakistan have nuclear bombs now and feel entirely justified in having them. Soon others will, too. Israel, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Norway, Nepal (I’m trying to be eclectic here), Denmark, Germany, Bhutan, Mexico, Lebanon, Sri Lanka, Burma, Bosnia, Singapore, North Korea, Sweden, South Korea, Vietnam, Cuba, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan … and why not? Every country in the world has a special case to make. Everybody has borders and beliefs. And when all our larders are bursting with shiny bombs and our bellies are empty (deterrence is an exorbitant beast), we can trade bombs for food. And when nuclear technology goes on the market, when it gets truly competitive and prices fall, not just governments, but anybody who can afford it can have their own private arsenal—businessmen, terrorists, perhaps even the occasional rich writer (like myself). Our planet will bristle with beautiful missiles. There will be a new world order. The dictatorship of the pro-nuke elite. We can get our kicks by threatening each other. It’ll be like bungee jumping when you can’t rely on the bungee cord, or playing Russian roulette all day long. An additional perk will be the thrill of Not Knowing What to Believe. We can be victims of the predatory imagination of every green card–seeking charlatan who surfaces in the West with concocted stories of imminent missile attacks. We can delight at the prospect of being held to ransom by every petty troublemaker and rumormonger, the more the merrier if truth be told, anything for an excuse to make more bombs. So you see, even without a war, we have a lot to look forward to.
Arundhati Roy (My Seditious Heart: Collected Nonfiction)
Don't forget to send me a postcard from Sri Lanka, that murky river, that olive skin, may something very beautiful happen to you, I wish you a lot of faith, in anything, it doesn't matter what, like that faith we once had, wish me something very beautiful too, anything wonderful, anything that makes me believe in anything again, that makes us believe in everyone again, that takes away this rotten taste of failure from my mouth, of defeat with no grandeur, there's no way, companheiro, we got lost in the middle of the road and we never had a map, no one gives rides anymore and the night is about to fall.

Thailand? Despite its beauty, the country was one of the top five worst countries for child prostitution, along with Sri Lanka, Brazil, America and Canada.

The truth is that literary festivals are the best thing in a writer’s life. To start with, they get you out of the house, out of your room. You meet people: readers and writers. You get to visit beautiful cities like Oxford, Cambridge, Cheltenham, Bath. Better still, you might find yourself being whisked abroad – to Sydney, Sri Lanka, Dubai or Berlin. There’s even a literary festival on board Queen Mary

A blue sapphire stone price can vary widely depending on factors like color saturation, clarity, carat weight, cut precision, and origin — and GemsRoot ensures that each listing gives you all the information you need to evaluate these qualities. The “4 Cs” — Color, Clarity, Cut, and Carat — are widely recognized in the gemstone industry as the main quality determinants influencing price, with color often being the most impactful. Deep, vivid blue stones with medium-dark saturation generally command higher prices because of their visual appeal and rarity. Blue sapphires have captivated gem lovers and jewelry designers for centuries due to their brilliance, durability, and symbolic meaning. As a gem in the corundum family, a quality blue sapphire stone offers impressive hardness (second only to diamond), making it ideal for daily-wear pieces such as rings and pendants. The value of a blue sapphire is heavily tied to its color quality, with the most desirable stones showing rich, evenly distributed blue tones without gray or green overtones. Another essential aspect of blue sapphire stone price is its origin. Stones from historic gem sources like Sri Lanka (Ceylon) and Kashmir are typically more valuable due to their exceptional color and overall quality. When you buy gemstone online in USA, it’s essential to understand the factors that affect blue sapphire stone price so you can make a confident choice. Blue sapphires are among the most cherished gemstones in the world, prized for their rich blue hues, brilliance, and symbolic significance. The value of a sapphire depends on multiple quality characteristics — including color saturation, clarity, cut, and carat weight — which together influence its price. GemsRoot’s listings include detailed descriptions and high-resolution images for each stone, so you can see exactly what you’re purchasing and compare how different features affect pricing before you make your choice. One of the primary determinants of blue sapphire price is the color of the gem. Stones with deep, vivid blue tones and strong saturation are generally more desirable and command higher value because they exhibit the classic traits sapphire collectors seek. Clarity also plays a significant role; stones with fewer visible inclusions often carry a higher price due to their rarity and visual purity. The precision of the cut can enhance a sapphire’s brilliance and overall look, sometimes increasing the stone’s price even if the weight remains moderate. Origin is another factor that can influence blue sapphire stone price. Sapphires from historic and renowned sources like Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Burma (Myanmar), and Kashmir are often more valuable because of their distinct color characteristics and limited availability. Although these premium origins can push prices higher, GemsRoot offers options across a wide range of budgets for American buyers — whether you’re seeking a more affordable everyday gemstone or a high-end investment quality sapphire. Shopping to buy gemstone online in USA brings convenience and a broad selection right to your fingertips. GemsRoot’s streamlined platform makes it easy to filter stones by carat weight, price, origin, and quality grade, helping you find the sapphire that aligns with your vision and budget. With certified gemstones, clear pricing, and dedicated support for U.S. buyers, GemsRoot simplifies the process when you buy gemstone online in USA.
