Rollo, and especially his son William Longsword, revived and strengthened churches and monastic communities with very large gifts. Both were buried in the cathedral in Rouen and it appears that most of the Vikings quickly became Christians.

Rollo is considered to be the great-great-great-grandfather of William the Conqueror. Through William he is a progenitor of the modern day British Royal family, and in addition, a precursor of all present European rulers and a large number of claimants of dissolved European thrones. A genetic examination of the remaining parts of Rollo's grandson, Richard I, and great-grandson Richard II, has been done, with the aim of determining the beginnings of the renowned Viking warrior.

Researchers presume that climate change may have been disastrous for the Vikings' western settlements. Falling temperatures throughout the region β after 1200 A.D. β would have made navigation more difficult and shortened the growing seasons in the Artic regions of the Northern Hemisphere, and so it was that by the 1500s Greenland was empty of any Norse settlers.

The chieftain Rollo and his men were given the town of Rouen and the surrounding region as far as the sea and possibly some way up the Seine. Rollo was probably also baptized. This became the basis for the Duchy of Normandy.

The Normansβ tribal history told of their descent from a Scandinavian warlord named Rollo who had converted to Christianity mainly as a means of ensuring that men of all manner of kingdoms would bend their knee to his command.6 Neither Roger nor Robert ever lost the Viking touch for persuasion at the end of a sword.
