Once in a while you find yourself in an odd situation. You get into it by degrees and in the most natural way but, when you are right in the midst of it, you are suddenly astonished and ask yourself how in the world it all came about.

Am going to cross Pacific on a wooden raft to support a theory that the South Sea islands were peopled from Peru. Will you come? I guarantee nothing but a free trip to Peru and the South Sea islands and back, but you will find good use for your technical abilities on the voyage. Reply at once.' Next day the following telegram arrived from Torstein: COMING. TORSTEIN.

The sea contains many surprises for him who has his floor on a level with the surface and drifts along slowly and noiselessly. A sportsman who breaks his way through the woods may come back and say that no wild life is to be seen. Another may sit down on a stump and wait, and often rustlings and cracklings will begin and curious eyes peer out. So it is on the sea, too. We usually plow across it with roaring engines and piston strokes, with the water foaming round our bow. Then we come back and say that there is nothing to see far out on the ocean.

The Kon-Tiki expedition opened my eyes to what the ocean really is. It is a conveyor and not an isolator. The ocean has been man's highway from the days he built the first buoyant ships, long before he tamed the horse, invented wheels, and cut roads through the virgin jungles.

Sometimes, too, we went out in the rubber boat to look at ourselves at night. Coal-black seas towered up on all sides, and a glittering myriad of tropical stars drew a faint reflection from plankton in the water. The world was simple - stars in the darkness. Whether it was 1947 B.C. or A.D. suddenly became of no significance. We lived, and that we felt with alert intensity. We realized that life had been full for men before the technical age also - in fact, fuller and richer in many ways than the life of modern man. Time and evolution somehow ceased to exist; all that was real and that mattered were the same today as they had always been and would always be. We were swallowed up in the absolute common measure of history - endless unbroken darkness under a swarm of stars.

No tempest at sea is harder on a man than to stand alone encircled by a firing squad of international authorities. A firm conviction of being in the right becomes your only armor against the barrage of assaults that can often be both personal and unfair. Yet dissidence and controversy are what bring science forward. Agreement and acceptance rarely stimulate experiments and progress.

Theyโ€™re specialists, the whole lot of them, and they donโ€™t believe in a method of work which cuts into every field of science from botany to archaeology. They limit their own scope in order to be able to dig in the depths with more concentration for details. Modern research demands that every special branch shall dig in its own hole. Itโ€™s not usual for anyone to sort out what comes up out of the holes and try to put it all together.

When specialization becomes so narrow that an archaeologist digging in tropic Ecuador is deemed incompetent on archaeology in tropic Mexico, then the reverse must be also the case, and it seems apparent that specialists are not the best people to draw broad conclusions. Unfortunately, too few universities are so far prepared to educate students to become specialists in horizontal research, i.e., train them to acquire an academic ability to piece together the fragments that vertical research brings forth from its deep trenches.

Order number one, which came first and last, was: Hold on to the raft! Whatever happened, we must hang on tight on board and let the nine great logs take the pressure from the reef. We ourselves had more than enough to do to withstand the weight of the water. If we jumped overboard, we should become helpless victims of the suction which would fling us in and out over the sharp corals. The rubber raft would capsize in the steep seas or, heavily loaded with us in it, it would be torn to ribbons against the reef. But the wooden logs would sooner or later be cast ashore, and we with them, if we only managed to hold fast.

When the day of our departure was approaching, we went to the regular passport control office to get permission to leave the country. Bengt stood first in the line as interpreter. โ€œWhat is your name?โ€ asked a ceremonious little clerk, looking suspiciously over his spectacles at Bengtโ€™s huge beard. โ€œBengt Emmerik Danielsson,โ€ Bengt answered respectfully. The man put a long form into his typewriter. โ€œBy what boat did you come to Peru?โ€ โ€œWell, you see,โ€ Bengt explained, bending over the mild little man, โ€œI didnโ€™t come by boat. I came to Peru by canoe.โ€ The man looked at Bengt dumb with astonishment and tapped out โ€œcanoeโ€ in an open space on the form. โ€œAnd by what boat are you leaving Peru?โ€ โ€œWell, you see, again,โ€ said Bengt politely, โ€œIโ€™m not leaving Peru by boat. Iโ€™m leaving by raft.โ€ โ€œA likely story!โ€ the clerk cried angrily and tore the paper out of the machine. โ€œWill you please answer my questions properly?

Coal-black seas towered up on all sides, and a glittering myriad of tropical stars drew a faint reflection from plankton in the water. The world was simple, stars in the darkness. Whether it was 1947 B.C. or A.D. suddenly became of no significance. We lived, and that we felt with alert intensity. We realised that life had been full for men before the technical age also - indeed, fuller and richer in many ways than the life of modern man. Time and evolution somehow ceased to exist; all that was real and all that mattered were the same to-day as they had always been and would always be; we were swallowed up in the absolute common measure of history, endless unbroken darkness under a swarm of stars.

(...), I faced the same opposition everywhere. I would have surrendered in front of an overwhelming army of academic giants, if I had not made an immediate discovery. They were giants each in their special field. But the greater experts they were in their own area the less they knew outside their narrow speciality. I began to feel like a little David confronted by an army of anthropological Goliaths, my slingstones being sweet-potatoes, coconuts and other hard evidence from biological genetics.

THE DISCOVERY OF the Lapita peoples yoked Polynesian prehistory firmly to the western Pacific and thus, ultimately, to Asia. But it could not entirely put to rest a competing notion that there was a link between Polynesia and the continent on the other side, namely South America. It had been popular in the nineteenth century to argue that the strength and prevalence of the easterly winds โ€œmost preposterouslyโ€ conflicted with the idea of anyone sailing eastward across the Pacific and that the inhabitants of Polynesia must therefore be โ€œdescended from the aborigines of Chili and Peru.โ€ This notion continued to percolate in the early twentieth century, and in the 1930s and โ€™40s it attracted the attention of the Norwegian adventurer and anthropologist Thor Heyerdahl.

We are critical of the priests who burned the paper books of the Aztecs because contemporary Europe looked down upon the non-Christian Americans and wanted to destroy their heathen beliefs. But we ourselves have so little esteem for these same beliefs that although the most important ones were recorded by the early Spaniards, we reject them as the fables of primitive nations.
