Back off, perv! I have a black belt in taekwondo and I will fuck you up if you take another step toward me.” Chase raised his hands in surrender, trying really, really hard to keep his eyes on hers. “Whoa, there, crouching tiger. Let’s just take this down a notch.

The most difficult part ot traditional taekwondo is not learning the first kick or punch. It is not struggling to remember the motions of a poomsae or becoming aquainted with Korean culture. Rather, it is taking the first step across the threshold of the dojang door. This is where roads diverge, where choices are made that will resonate throughout a lifetime.
Doug Cook (Taekwondo: A Path to Excellence)
Writing is self-reinforcing. Don't make a fetish out of it, and don't surrender to the myth of the garret, or the myth of the chained muse. It's like playing the guitar, or practicing taekwondo, or having sex. The more you do, the better you get. The better you get, the better it feels. The better it feels, the more you want to do.
Jay Lake
We may encounter many defeats but we must not be defeated.

just as a stool requires three legs to stand upright so the taekwondoist must cultivate basic skills, meaningful forms, and effective sparring in order to have both feet firmly planted in the art

Martial Arts does not teach you how to fight, it teaches you why not to.

A Black Belt should be... ...a REFLECTION of what IS inside ...NOT the PROOF of it!
Robert W. Dallmann (The Definitive History of Bushido Kai)
I underestimated this guy. He plays the game well. Of course he does. He’s had years of adulthood – where everyone smiles when they hate someone and bottles up their emotions – to practice in. He’s a master of passive-aggressive-bullshit-taekwondo. And I’m more a master of the aggressive style.

By the way, Tae Kwon Do does NOT clear up ‘obnoxiousness’.

Oskar Schell: My father died at 9-11. After he died I wouldn't go into his room for a year because it was too hard and it made me want to cry. But one day, I put on heavy boots and went in his room anyway. I miss doing taekwondo with him because it always made me laugh. When I went into his closet, where his clothes and stuff were, I reached up to get his old camera. It spun around and dropped about a hundred stairs, and I broke a blue vase! Inside was a key in an envelope with black written on it and I knew that dad left something somewhere for me that the key opened and I had to find. So I take it to Walt, the locksmith. I give it to Stan, the doorman, who tells me keys can open anything. He gave me the phone book for all the five boroughs. I count there are 472 people with the last name black. There are 216 addresses. Some of the blacks live together, obviously. I calculated that if I go to 2 every Saturday plus holidays, minus my hamlet school plays, my minerals, coins, and comic convention, it's going to take me 3 years to go through all of them. But that's what I'm going to do! Go to every single person named black and find out what the key fits and see what dad needed me to find. I made the very best possible plan but using the last four digits of each phone number, I divide the people by zones. I had to tell my mother another lie, because she wouldn't understand how I need to go out and find what the key fits and help me make sense of things that don't even make sense like him being killed in the building by people that didn't even know him at all! And I see some people who don't speak English, who are hiding, one black said that she spoke to God. If she spoke to god how come she didn't tell him not to kill her son or not to let people fly planes into buildings and maybe she spoke to a different god than them! And I met a man who was a woman who a man who was a woman all at the same time and he didn't want to get hurt because he/she was scared that she/he was so different. And I still wonder if she/he ever beat up himself, but what does it matter? Thomas Schell: What would this place be if everyone had the same haircut? Oskar Schell: And I see Mr. Black who hasn't heard a sound in 24 years which I can understand because I miss dad's voice that much. Like when he would say, "are you up yet?" or... Thomas Schell: Let's go do something. Oskar Schell: And I see the twin brothers who paint together and there's a shed that has to be clue, but it's just a shed! Another black drew the same drawing of the same person over and over and over again! Forest black, the doorman, was a school teacher in Russia but now says his brain is dying! Seamus black who has a coin collection, but doesn't have enough money to eat everyday! You see olive black was a gate guard but didn't have the key to it which makes him feel like he's looking at a brick wall. And I feel like I'm looking at a brick wall because I tried the key in 148 different places, but the key didn't fit. And open anything it hasn't that dad needed me to find so I know that without him everything is going to be alright. Thomas Schell: Let's leave it there then. Oskar Schell: And I still feel scared every time I go into a strange place. I'm so scared I have to hold myself around my waist or I think I'll just break all apart! But I never forget what I heard him tell mom about the sixth borough. That if things were easy to find... Thomas Schell: ...they wouldn't be worth finding. Oskar Schell: And I'm so scared every time I leave home. Every time I hear a door open. And I don't know a single thing that I didn't know when I started! It's these times I miss my dad more than ever even if this whole thing is to stop missing him at all! It hurts too much. Sometimes I'm afraid I'll do something very bad.

Dwight would later learn that Lyon had fencing lessons on Monday nights, French lessons on Tuesday nights and violin lessons on Sunday nights. The little boy only wanted to learn Taekwondo.

Back home, as well as rap, Zitao’s passion had been for wushu, a Chinese martial art. He had won competitions in Qingdao and his dancing and fighting skills became a feature of EXO shows. Xiumin, who excelled in the Korean martial art taekwondo, and Tao would practise together in the dorm (Luhan said he got used to hearing Xiumin shout out in pain!).

stuff is so challenging. There is always some type of crime happening in the world. I have to lie to my mom and other people about what I do at night. I have regular school plus college courses. I'm involved in taekwondo. I have chores and I have a girlfriend." "Yes, Kendall can be pretty demanding," Lukas replied chuckling. "Shut up. I'm being serious!

In late 2019, I had a chance to talk with Serena Williams. I hadn’t researched her childhood at all, but I had heard that it was a Tiger story. I was only slightly surprised when she complicated that notion. Her father was ahead of his time, she told me. She participated in ballet, gymnastics, taekwondo, and track and field. She and Venus threw a football to develop the motion for a powerful serve, a habit they continued as professionals.

Hardt’s passion for the written word began with the books her mother read to her at bedtime. She wrote her first story at age six and hasn’t stopped since. In addition to being an award-winning author of romantic fiction, she’s a mother, an attorney, a black belt in Taekwondo, a grammar geek, an appreciator of fine red wine, and a lover of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. She writes from her home in Colorado,

Dad turned to me, still gripping Kai’s hand. “Is he treating you well?” I laughed and nodded. “Yes, Dad. Now, let his hand go before you break it.” Dad narrowed his eyes toward Kai as he still held on to his hand. “I’m a triple black belt in taekwondo, young man. You know what that means, right?” “You could kick my butt in a heartbeat if I hurt your daughter?” Kai asked. “No.” Dad shook his head. “It means I could murder you and make it look like an accident.

(I vividly remember a fellow at my former TaeKwonDo club that must have been 6’9 and despite not being the most technically gifted opponent he simply stuck out a leg and it was automatically at my head height!).
