Oliver Bowden (Renaissance (Assassin's Creed, #1))
Of course we would all like to "believe" in something, like to assuage our private guilts in public causes, like to lose our tiresome selves; like, perhaps, to transform the white flag of defeat at home into the brave white banner of battle away from home. And of course it is all right to do that; that is how, immemorially, thing have gotten done. But I think it is all right only so long as we do not delude ourselves about what we are doing, and why. It is all right only so long as we remember that all the ad hoc committees, all the picket lines, all the brave signatures in The New York Times, all the tools of agitprop straight across the spectrum, do not confer upon anyone any ipso facto virtue. It is all right only so long as we recognize that the end may or may not be expedient, may or may not be a good idea, but in any case has nothing to do with "morality." Because when we start deceiving ourselves into thinking not that we want something or need something, not that it is a pragmatic necessity for us to have it, but that it is a moral imperative that we have it, then is when we join the fashionable madmen, and then is when the thin whine of hysteria is heard in the land, and then is when we are in bad trouble. And I suspect we are already there.
Joan Didion (Slouching Towards Bethlehem)
In everyone's life, there is great need for an anam cara, a soul friend. In this love, you are understood as you are without mask or pretension. The superficial and functional lies and half-truths of social acquaintance fall away, you can be as you really are. Love allows understanding to dawn, and understanding is precious. Where you are understood, you are at home. Understanding nourishes belonging. When you really feel understood, you feel free to release yourself into the trust and shelter of the other person's soul. This recognition is described in a beautiful line from Pablo Neruda: "You are like nobody since I love you." This art of love discloses the special and sacred identity of the other person. Love is the only light that can truly read the secret signature of the other person's individuality and soul. Love alone is literate in the world of origin; it an decipher identity and destiny.

His eyes go soft as they bounce over the words, following the path of the pen I used to ink each letter on the signature line.  “Kennedy.” “I do.” I chuckle a bit at those two words that got us here in the first place.  “Really?” “So much, Isaiah.” He finally takes his eyes off the page to look at me. “I love you,” I tell him, using the same words he found written on the signature line of our divorce papers. “It may have taken me a bit longer to allow myself to open my eyes and see it, but there’s no doubt in my mind that I love you. Every part of you. The parts you show everyone and the parts you show only me.

The kiss is a slow, thorough entrapment like everything else she’s doing—and I let her. I let her fucking own me. I sign my soul over, signature on the dotted line.

Cade hiked his shoulders, pretending nonchalance. "Tell me about the vampire, or not, dove. But none of us really wants to be here." "I'll tell you," Nïx said, her gaze rapt on his horns. "But only if you let me lick your rock-hard horns—" "Nïx!" Regin's attention snapped back to this conversation. Eyes wide, Nïx cried, "Who said that?? I didn't say that! Oh, very well—the vampire's named Conrad Wroth. Best be careful with that one. He single-handedly took down Bothrops the Lich." "That was Wroth?" He'd heard of the assassin before. Cade grudgingly admitted that the leech did nice work, dealing deaths with a unique, gruesome signature to them. Which was important in their line of business. "Where is he?" "To find him, you need to trail the one who seeks him in sleep." "Soothsayerese? I don't speak it," he said, but she didn't elaborate. "That's all you're going to divvy?" "Wanna know more?" Nïx raised her brows. "Then you should have let me lick your horns.

Clark had always been fond of beautiful objects, and in his present state of mind, all objects were beautiful. He stood by the case and found himself moved by every object he saw there, by the human enterprise each object had required. Consider the snow globe. Consider the mind that invented those miniature storms, the factory worker who turned sheets of plastic into white flakes of snow, the hand that drew the plan for the miniature Severn City with its church steeple and city hall, the as**sembly-line worker who watched the globe glide past on a conveyer belt somewhere in China. Consider the white gloves on the hands of the woman who inserted the snow globes into boxes, to be packed into larger boxes, crates, shipping containers. Consider the card games played belowdecks in the evenings on the ship carrying the containers across the ocean, a hand stubbing out a cigarette in an overflowing ashtray, a haze of blue smoke in dim light, the cadences of a half dozen languages united by common profanities, the sailors’ dreams of land and women, these men for whom the ocean was a gray-line horizon to be traversed in ships the size of overturned skyscrapers. Consider the signature on the shipping manifest when the ship reached port, a signature unlike any other on earth, the coffee cup in the hand of the driver delivering boxes to the distribution center, the secret hopes of the UPS man carrying boxes of snow globes from there to the Severn City Airport. Clark shook the globe and held it up to the light. When he looked through it, the planes were warped and caught in whirling snow.

Italy: It's been a while since I slept with you, Romano. Romano: Shut up! You should have at least two beds in your place! Italy: How weird... I usually sleep together with Germany and Japan. Romano: [Grabs Italy's throat] You still get along with them! [Repeatedly bashes his head into his brother's] Italy: Bro, I can't breathe. Bro, I can't breathe! [Cut to Germany's office; his phone is ringing. He picks it up] Italy: Germany, save me! I'm on my bed and my brother is- ow! Romano: Not there! Italy: It's stuck! OW! Romano: Put down the phone, you fool! Italy: TAKE IT OUT! Romano: Put it down! [Line goes dead] Germany: [Slightly disturbed] His brother's... stuck..."ow"... take it out... [Germany bursts into Italy's room] Italy: Italy, are you okay! What's going-! [He realizes the brothers' signature hair curls are merely tangled with each other] Italy: Germany, you're late!

Early, I indentured myself to the five horizontal lines where black notes were written on a sheet of music. It is a place of world of signs and notations that speaks to me with perfect clarity. It is a place of time signatures, fermatas, ledger lines, grace notes, and demisemiquavers that are the common tongue and heritage of musicians all over the world. . . . It is something I cannot imagine being without. For without music, life is a journey through a desert that has not ever heard the rumor of God. In music’s sweet harmony, I had all the proof I needed of a God who held the earth together between the staffs, where the heavens lay. Here, he marked all the lines and spaces with notes so perfect that they praised all of his creation with their beauty.

She remembered a line from Montaigne, something she had read years ago, which had always stayed with her, and which now felt horribly pertinent: “These are two things that I have always observed to be in singular accord: supercelestial thoughts and subterranean conduct.

Methods containing hundreds of lines of code are fine if they have a simple signature and are easy to read. These methods are deep (lots of functionality, simple interface), which is good.

Bureaucrats do not take kindly to intercessions. Their one satisfaction in life is to keep us waiting in line, begging for that last signature.

Peeling aside the saran wrap on his thigh, he guided Zee’s lips to kiss the fresh, raised black lines of his signature. “You signed it,” he said softly. “It’s yours. But you owe me.

.... romance is so much bigger than just a love story. Romance has to do with making things lovely because of love. Romance means absorbing the beauty of life, conversation, atmosphere, places, and surroundings. It means increasing our awareness of the fragrance of pine trees, freshly ground coffee, and sheets drying on the line; hearing the music of waves, children's laughter, and he rain drumming on the roof: seeing the signature of God on His creation. It means drinking the gift of life to the dregs. All to be enjoyed, all to be taken in." p. 17

Life is so much better when your passion and calling line up. You understand the gift of your spiritual inheritance, assume responsibility for right and just choices, and you pour your signature presence into serving others.

You just never know when you’ll want an escape hatch: mile-long lines at tollbooth plazas, the fifteen minutes you have to spend in the hall of some boring college building waiting for your advisor (who’s got some yank-off in there threatening to commit suicide because he/she is flunking Custom Kurmfurling 101) to come out so you can get his signature on a drop-card, airport boarding lounges, laundromats on rainy afternoons, and the absolute worst, which is the doctor’s office when the guy is running late and you have to wait half an hour in order to have something sensitive mauled. At such times I find a book vital. If I have to spend time in purgatory before going to one place or the other, I guess I’ll be all right as long as there’s a lending library
Stephen King (On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft)
Barbara took her accustomed place by the door but as the singing began Margerit beckoned her over to her side. "I haven't been following much except that it's all ancient Greeks and battles and such. What's happening now?" Barbara knelt beside her and leaned close to whisper so as not to disturb the rest of the party. A brief synopsis of what had gone before took up the time while the chorus escorted the principles to the centre of the stage. "I haven't seen this performance before," Barbara added, "but I imagine this will be the grand love duet." As the soprano began, she concentrated on the stage to follow the opening phrases. The chorus had abandoned the field to the principles who faced each other against a backdrop of fluted columns. "O! What strange fate is mine!" Barbara paused as the signature line was repeated several times. "I loved you in the guise of Mars, but now I am betrayed by Venus. The iron in your glance turns soft beneath my touch. I am undone. O Venus, you are cruel to mock me so." It continued on in the same vein until it was the mezzo's turn. Her lyrics ran much parallel with the soprano's. With less concentration required, Barbara ventured a glance to see Margerit's reaction. Margerit turned at the same moment and their eyes met as Barbara whispered Ifis's lines. "O! What a strange fate is mine! In the guise of Mars I love you but now as Venus I'm betrayed. The Iron in my soul turns soft beneath your touch." Unconsciously, Margerit placed a hand on hers where it lay on the arm of her chair. "Fire runs through my veins - I am undone." Fire indeed ran through her veins. Her hand burned sweetly where Margerit touched it and she dared now take it back. Her voice grew husky. "Why do the gods mock me with desire I cannot sate?" Their eyes were still locked and Margerit's lips had parted in a little "o" of wonder. "O Venus, have mercy on one new come to your shrine." When the soprano joined again for the duet, Margerit breathed along with her, "O! What strange fate is mine!" With effort, Barbara wrenched her gaze away.

In this peaceful city, during Tet, it was traditional to send cups of paper with lit candles floating down the Huong like flickering blossoms, prayers for health, for success, for the memory of loved ones away or departed, for success in business or in love, and perhaps for an end to the war and killing. It made a moving collective display, a vast flotilla of hope, many thousands of tiny flames. They would wind down the wide water without sound, flowing past the bright lights of the modern city to the south, framed to the north by the fortress’s high black walls. People would line both banks of the Huong to savor the spectacle, stepping up and bending to add their own offering. The ritual was Hue’s emblem and signature, a gesture of beauty and calm, of harmony between the living and the dead, an expression of Vietnam’s soul, a place far from the horrors of war. Not this year.
Mark Bowden (Hue 1968: A Turning Point of the American War in Vietnam)
We have seen that imagining an act engages the same motor and sensory programs that are involved in doing it. We have long viewed our imaginative life with a kind of sacred awe: as noble, pure, immaterial, and ethereal, cut off from our material brain. Now we cannot be so sure about where to draw the line between them. Everything your “immaterial” mind imagines leaves material traces. Each thought alters the physical state of your brain synapses at a microscopic level. Each time you imagine moving your fingers across the keys to play the piano, you alter the tendrils in your living brain. These experiments are not only delightful and intriguing, they also overturn the centuries of confusion that have grown out of the work of the French philosopher René Descartes, who argued that mind and brain are made of different substances and are governed by different laws. The brain, he claimed, was a physical, material thing, existing in space and obeying the laws of physics. The mind (or the soul, as Descartes called it) was immaterial, a thinking thing that did not take up space or obey physical laws. Thoughts, he argued, were governed by the rules of reasoning, judgment, and desires, not by the physical laws of cause and effect. Human beings consisted of this duality, this marriage of immaterial mind and material brain. But Descartes—whose mind/body division has dominated science for four hundred years—could never credibly explain how the immaterial mind could influence the material brain. As a result, people began to doubt that an immaterial thought, or mere imagining, might change the structure of the material brain. Descartes’s view seemed to open an unbridgeable gap between mind and brain. His noble attempt to rescue the brain from the mysticism that surrounded it in his time, by making it mechanical, failed. Instead the brain came to be seen as an inert, inanimate machine that could be moved to action only by the immaterial, ghostlike soul Descartes placed within it, which came to be called “the ghost in the machine.” By depicting a mechanistic brain, Descartes drained the life out of it and slowed the acceptance of brain plasticity more than any other thinker. Any plasticity—any ability to change that we had—existed in the mind, with its changing thoughts, not in the brain. But now we can see that our “immaterial” thoughts too have a physical signature, and we cannot be so sure that thought won’t someday be explained in physical terms. While we have yet to understand exactly how thoughts actually change brain structure, it is now clear that they do, and the firm line that Descartes drew between mind and brain is increasingly a dotted line.

In the afterlife you relive all your experiences, but this time with the events reshuffled into a new order: all the moments that share a quality are grouped together. You spend two months driving the street in front of your house, seven months having sex. You sleep for thirty years without opening your eyes. For five months straight you flip through magazines while sitting on a toilet. You take all your pain at once, all twenty-seven intense hours of it. Bones break, cars crash, skin is cut, babies are born. Once you make it through, it’s agony-free for the rest of your afterlife. But that doesn’t mean it’s always pleasant. You spend six days clipping your nails. Fifteen months looking for lost items. Eighteen months waiting in line. Two years of boredom: staring out a bus window, sitting in an airport terminal. One year reading books. Your eyes hurt, and you itch, because you can’t take a shower until it’s your time to take your marathon two-hundred-day shower. Two weeks wondering what happens when you die. One minute realizing your body is falling. Seventy-seven hours of confusion. One hour realizing you’ve forgotten someone’s name. Three weeks realizing you are wrong. Two days lying. Six weeks waiting for a green light. Seven hours vomiting. Fourteen minutes experiencing pure joy. Three months doing laundry. Fifteen hours writing your signature. Two days tying shoelaces. Sixty-seven days of heartbreak. Five weeks driving lost. Three days calculating restaurant tips. Fifty-one days deciding what to wear. Nine days pretending you know what is being talked about. Two weeks counting money. Eighteen days staring into the refrigerator.

I'm Ukrainian, actually. And I'm making my signature dish," he said slowly, meeting Ibáñez's stare. "More shocking than Rocky Mountain oysters." He nodded to Volière. "Rarer than ortolan. Maybe just as taboo, though." He turned to Katsuki. "And it does more than just dance around death. It reverses it." There was silence in the kitchen as they waited for the punch line, anxious to learn if the things they'd heard through the grapevine were true. "Well?" Volière prompted. "Qu'est-ce que c'est?" "I don't know." Kostya shrugged. "The Dead haven't fed it to me yet.

Let’s say I do bother, big time. I turn my life upside-down, start biking to work, plant a big garden, turn down the thermostat so low I need the Jimmy Carter signature cardigan, forsake the clothes dryer for a laundry line across the yard, trade in the station wagon for a hybrid, get off the beef, go completely local. I could theoretically do all that, but what would be the point when I know full well that halfway around the world there lives my evil twin, some carbon-footprint doppelgänger who’s eager to swallow every bite of meat I forswear and positively itching to replace every last pound of carbon dioxide I’m struggling no longer to emit. So what exactly would I have to show for all my trouble?

FV: Hasn't all art, in a way, submitted to words - reduced itself to the literary...admitted its failure through all the catalogues and criticism, monographs and manifestos — ML: Explanations? FV: Exactly. All the artistry, now, seems expended in the rhetoric and sophistry used to differentiate, to justify its own existence now that so little is left to do. And who's to say how much of it ever needed doing in the first place? [...] Nothing's been done here but the re-writing of rules, in denial that the game was already won, long ago, by the likes of Duchamp, Arp, or Malevich. I mean, what's more, or, what's less to be said than a single black square? ML: Well, a triangle has fewer sides, I suppose. FV: Then a circle, a line, a dot. The rest is academic; obvious variations on an unnecessary theme, until you're left with just an empty canvas - which I'm sure has been done, too. ML: Franz Kline, wasn't it? Or, Yves Klein - didn't he once exhibit a completely empty gallery? No canvases at all. FV: I guess, from there, to not exhibit anything - to do absolutely nothing at all - would be the next "conceptual" act; the ultimate multimedia performance, where all artforms converge in negation and silence. And someone's probably already put their signature to that, as well. But even this should be too much, to involve an artist, a name. Surely nothing, done by no-one, is the greatest possible artistic achievement. Yet, that too has been done. Long, long ago. Before the very first artists ever walked the earth.

We have to stop and get lift tickets and sign a release today. Yesterday it was pre-arranged as part of the wedding. I grab a form and dash off a signature then turn towards the counter to pay when I realize Chloe is still reading the form. Line by line. She catches me staring at her and glances at my form. “You already signed it? Without reading it?” She’s appalled. “This is a legal document, Boyd,” she says, jabbing a finger onto the paper in front of her. “It’s just a slide, Chloe. Not a death trap.” She glares at me and then goes back to carefully reading the form while I watch, amused as hell. Finally she frowns and, with a tiny shake of her head and a small sigh, signs the form. “Are you satisfied now, safety girl? Are you fully prepared for the slide of death?” “At least one of us is,” she retorts

You see I want to be quite obstinate about insisting that we have no way of knowing—beyond that fundamental loyalty to the social code—what is “right” and what is “wrong,” what is “good” and what “evil.” I dwell so upon this because the most disturbing aspect of “morality” seems to me to be the frequency with which the word now appears; in the press, on television, in the most perfunctory kinds of conversation. Questions of straightforward power (or survival) politics, questions of quite indifferent public policy, questions of almost anything: they are all assigned these factitious moral burdens. There is something facile going on, some self-indulgence at work. Of course we would all like to “believe” in something, like to assuage our private guilts in public causes, like to lose our tiresome selves; like, perhaps, to transform the white flag of defeat at home into the brave white banner of battle away from home. And of course it is all right to do that; that is how, immemorially, things have gotten done. But I think it is all right only so long as we do not delude ourselves about what we are doing, and why. Joan Didion (Slouching Towards Bethlehem: Essays)
So I explained to him what the Old One had told me. The process of braiding hair is like a prayer, he said. Each of the three strands in a single braid represents many things. In one instance they might represent faith, honesty and kindness. In another they might be mind, body and spirit, or love, respect and tolerance. The important thing, he explained, was that each strand be taken as representative of one essential human quality. As the men, or the women, braided their hair they concentrated or meditated on those three qualities. Once the braid was completed the process was repeated on the other side. Then as they walked through their day they had visible daily reminders of the human qualities they needed to carry through life with them. The Old One said they had at least about twenty minutes out of their day when they focused themselves entirely on spiritual principles. In this way, the people they came in contact with were the direct beneficiaries of that inward process. So braids, he said, reflected the true nature of Aboriginal people. They reflected a people who were humble enough to ask the Creator for help and guidance on a daily basis. They reflected truly human qualities within the people themselves: ideals they sought to live by. And they reflected a deep and abiding concern for the planet, for life, their people and themselves. Each time you braid your hair, he told me, you become another in a long line of spiritually based people and your prayer joins the countless others that have been offered up to the Creator since time began. You become a part of a rich and vibrant tradition. As the young boy listened I could see the same things going on in his face that must have gone on in my own. Suddenly, a braid became so much more than a hairstyle or a cultural signature. It became a connection to something internal as well as external - a signpost to identity, tradition and self-esteem. The words Indian, Native and Aboriginal took on new meaning and new impact.

"That's the only thing that can be done," Blue River thought. "was that an advantage? It sounds like we are killing the other guilds with a borrowed knife . But in reality, the knife does whatever it wants to and we can only follow it with our tails tucked between our legs and pick up the leftovers." But I think it is all right only so long as we do not delude ourselves about what we are doing, and why. It is all right only so long as we remember that all the ad hoc committees, all the picket lines, all the brave signatures in The New York Times, all the tools of agitprop straight across the spectrum, do not confer upon anyone any ipso facto virtue. It is all right only so long as we recognize that the end may or may not be expedient, may or may not be a good idea, but in any case has nothing to do with “morality.” Because when we start deceiving ourselves into thinking not that we want something or need something, not that it is a pragmatic necessity for us to have it, but that it is a moral imperative that we have it, then is when we join the fashionable madmen, and then is

The goal of flavor creation is to reach the seven-year-old inside the forty-seven-year-old," Brian explains of their instant connection with customers. While other ice cream start-ups in the city- and there have been plenty launches since Ample Hills, including Oddfellows (2013), Morgenstern's (2014), and Ice & Vice (2015), to name a few- have found their success in offbeat flavors like avocado, extra virgin olive oil, red bean, and chorizo caramel, they aren't made in the same spirit of evoking the fun and play of childhood that Brian finds essential. It's a different brand of creativity. Even though it inevitably meant waiting in a long line, I loved being the one to go to Ample Hills to pick up a pint because it also meant sampling the flavors. Each one is sweet and creamy, über-rich, and totally original. They're loaded with so many ingredients you never tire of taste testing them. There's Ooey Gooey Butter Cake, a full-flavor vanilla that's studded with chunks of rich, dense Saint Louis-style cake; The Munchies, a salty-sweet pretzel-infused ice cream chock-full of Ritz crackers, potato chips, M&M's, and more pretzels; Nonna D's Oatmeal Lace is brown-sugar-and-cinnamon ice cream chunked with homemade oatmeal cookies; and their signature flavor, Salted Crack Caramel, which involves caramelizing large amounts of sugar on the stove top until it's nearly burnt, giving it a bitterness that distinguishes their version from all the other salted caramels out there.

In the “revelation” scene (Who forged the signatures? and do we really see a self-incrimination here?) the clock’s ticking, of course, convinces the naive that what we see has transpired in real time. It probably actually results from Welles’ conspiracy with the sound mixer. You can create a similar “revelation” scene by taking ten or twelve close-ups from half a year of filming, putting in a sound track with a tick-tock clock, and then just using your imagination to make the opening and closing dialogue seem to refer to each other. All the close-ups in between will then appear as reactions to the two lines of dialogue which can come from a scene, or two scenes, having no real link to the spoken words.

Outside the closed doors to the throne room, Sharif the high elder waited, holding a kaftan robe of red silk and velvet in one hand and a long spear nearly twice his height in the other. Jasmine's heart beat faster as she recognized the gold trim and signature jewels lining the robe, the ancient craftsmanship of the spear. These had belonged to Cyrus the Great, the first ruler of the empire. And in mere moments, she would be the first woman to feel them against her skin. Nadia untied Jasmine's peacock cape while the high elder held out the red robe. "Today you shed the persona of Jasmine, the princess," he said, "and step into the skin of a sultana." Jasmine took a deep breath, slipping her arms into the preserved silk. The material was more fragile than anything she'd worn before, and she was conscious that one wrong step, one tear of the fabric, would be rip through history. Yet she felt stronger in the cape too, as though Cyrus were transferring his power through it to her. When Sharif handed her Cyrus's spear, she could barely contain her awe.

don’t claim that the Rearden-Taggart contraption will collapse,” wrote Bertram Scudder in The Future. “Maybe it will and maybe it won’t. That’s not the important issue. The important issue is: what protection does society have against the arrogance, selfishness and greed of two unbridled individualists, whose records are conspicuously devoid of any public-spirited actions? These two, apparently, are willing to stake the lives of their fellow men on their own conceited notions about their powers of judgment, against the overwhelming majority opinion of recognized experts. Should society permit it? If that thing does collapse, won’t it be too late to take precautionary measures? Won’t it be like locking the barn after the horse has escaped? It has always been the belief of this column that certain kinds of horses should be kept bridled and locked, on general social principles.” A group that called itself “Committee of Disinterested Citizens” collected signatures on a petition demanding a year’s study of the John Galt Line by government experts before the first train was allowed to run. The petition stated that its signers had no motive

I noticed many of the familiar red stamps. Some were, of course, the stamps of the artists—but there were others. One piece of calligraphy was covered in them. Lucie and Sherry explained: Ancient Chinese scholars and nobility, if they liked a work of art, would sometimes stamp it with their stamp too. One emperor in particular loved to do this, and would take beautiful sculptures or pieces of jade—centuries old—and have his stamp and perhaps some lines of his poetry carved into them. What a fascinating mind-set. Imagine being a king, deciding that you particularly liked Michelangelo’s David, and so having your signature carved across the chest. That’s essentially what this was. The concept was so striking, I began playing with a stamp magic in my head. Soulstamps, capable of rewriting the nature of an object’s existence. I didn’t want to stray too close to Soulcasting from the Stormlight world, and so instead I used the inspiration of the museum—of history—to devise a magic that allowed rewriting an object’s past.

All those songs I used to pretend to understand, all the angsty, heartbroken songs I had heard all my life, they suddenly made so much more sense. "Well, then she probably needs a giant coffee, a huge box of your creations, and some time to nurse her feelings in private, don't you think?" Brantley Dane, local hero, saves girl from sure death brought on by sheer mortification. That'd be his headline. "Come on, sweetheart," he said, moving behind me, casually touching my hip in the process, and going behind counter. "What's your poison? Judging by the situation, I am thinking something cold, mocha or caramel filled and absolutely towering with full fat whipped cream." That was exactly what I wanted. But, broken heart aside, I knew I couldn't let myself drown in sweets. Gaining twenty pounds wasn't going to help anything. There was absolutely no enthusiasm in my voice when I said, "Ah, actually, can I have a large black coffee with one sugar please?" "Not that I'm not turned on as all fuck by a woman who appreciates black coffee," he started, making me jerk back suddenly at the bluntness of that comment and the dose of profanity I wasn't accustomed to hearing in my sleepy hometown. "But if you're only one day into a break-up, you're allowed to have some full fat chocolate concoction to indulge a bit. I promise from here on out I won't make you anything even half as food-gasm-ing as this." He leaned across the counter, getting close enough that I could see golden flecks in his warm brown eyes. "Honey, not even if you beg," he added and, if I wasn't mistaken, there was absolutely some kind of sexually-charged edge to his words. "Say yes," he added, lips tipping up at one corner. "Alright, yes," I agreed, knowing I would love every last drop of whatever he made me and likely punish myself with an extra long run for it too. "Good girl," he said as he turned away. And there was not, was absolutely not some weird fluttering feeling in my belly at that. Nope. That would be completely insane. "Okay, I got you one of everything!" my mother said, coming up beside me and pressing the box into my hands. She even tied it with her signature (and expensive, something I had tried to talk her out of many times over the years when she was struggling financially) satin bow. I smiled at her, knowing that sometimes, there was nothing liked baked goods from your mother after a hard day. I was just lucky enough to have a mother who was a pastry chef. "Thanks, Mom," I said, the words heavy. I wasn't just thanking her for the sweets, but for letting me come home, for not asking questions, for not making it seem like even the slightest inconvenience. She gave me a smile that said she knew exactly what I meant. "You have nothing to thank me for." She meant that too. Coming from a family that, when they found out she was knocked up as a teen, had kicked her out and disowned her, she made it clear all my life that she was always there, no matter what I did with my life, no matter how high I soared, or how low I crashed. Her arms, her heart, and her door were always open for me. "Alright. A large mocha frappe with full fat milk, full fat whipped cream, and both a mocha and caramel drizzle. It's practically dessert masked as coffee," Brantley said, making my attention snap to where he was pushing what was an obnoxiously large frappe with whipped cream that was towering out of the dome that the pink and sage straw stuck out of. "Don't even think about it, sweetheart," he said, shaking his head as I reached for my wallet. "Thank you," I smiled, and found that it was a genuine one as I reached for it and, in a move that was maybe not brilliant on my part, took a sip. And proceeded to let out an almost porn-star worthy groan of pure, delicious pleasure. Judging by the way Brant's smile went a little wicked, his thoughts ran along the same lines as well.

Gregor would reference all kinds of books and articles, and instead of paraphrasing them, like any normal lazy person, he'd insist on going online and finding the exact line or quote from the secondary source, adding another five-minute silent section to the meeting, during which he wordlessly surfed online. Later I would realize this is Greg''s signature style. He likes to take in people past the point where they can be putting on a show to impress him.

My boy is painting outer space, and steadies his brush-tip to trace the comets, planets, moon and sun and all the circuitry they run in one great heavenly design. But when he tries to close the line he draws around his upturned cup, his hand shakes, and he screws it up. The shake’s as old as he is, all (thank god) his body can recall of the hour when, one inch from home, we couldn’t get the air to him; and though today he’s all the earth and sky for breathing-space and breath the whole damn troposphere can’t cure the flutter in his signature. But Jamie, nothing’s what we meant. The dream is taxed. We all resent the quarter bled off by the dark between the bowstring and the mark and trust to Krishna or to fate to keep our arrows halfway straight. But the target also draws our aim - our will and nature’s are the same; we are its living word, and not a book it wrote and then forgot, its fourteen-billion-year-old song inscribed in both our right and wrong - so even when you rage and moan and bring your fist down like a stone on your spoiled work and useless kit, you just can’t help but broadcast it: look at the little avatar of your muddy water-jar filling with the perfect ring singing under everything.

Becoming a woman felt a bit like becoming famous. For, from being benevolently generally ignored – the base-line existence of most children – a teenage girl is suddenly fascinating to others, and gets bombarded with questions: What size are you? Have you done it yet? Will you have sex with me? Have you got ID? Do you want to try a puff of this? Are you seeing anyone? Have you got protection? What’s your signature style? Can you walk in heels? Who are your heroes? Are you getting a Brazilian? What porn do you like? Do you want to get married? When are you going to have kids? Are you a feminist? Were you just flirting with that man? What do you want to do? WHO ARE YOU? All ridiculous questions to ask of a 13-year-old simply because she now needs a bra. They might as well have been asking my dog. I had absolutely no idea.

The key ideas are simple. Find your own signature and stick to it, and follow a consistent routine. Feel it instead of trying to do it. Improve your visual interpretation of the speed and line of your putt, and roll the ball without wasting too much time and letting that visualization deteriorate.

The discovery that Father Sánchez’s paternal line is haplogroup J1 is somewhat surprising, as Spain has no large population group from within that subhaplogroup—in fact, only about 7 percent of the Spanish population tests as J1. Given the relatively small percentage of this lineage in the rest of Europe, it can safely be assumed that many J1’s from Spain share a crypto-Judaic past, which is probably true of Father Sánchez. It is also interesting to note that the signature of the Cohanim—descendants of Jewish priests—is also found in haplogroup J1.

Along with John and Judi, we took a big risk and started filming on the movie before we had a contract signed with MGM. There didn’t seem to be any choice. I imagined all the insurance underwriters across the world reacting to the phrase “live crocodiles.” Those two words would be enough to blow them right out of their cubicles. So we began shooting with our zoo crocodiles, but without signatures on the dotted line for the movie. A particular scene in the script--and a good example of an insurance man’s nightmare--had a crocodile trying to lunge into a boat. Only Steve’s expertise could make this happen, since the action called for Steve and me to be in the boat at the time. If the lunging crocodile happened to hook his head over the edge of the boat, he would tip us both into the water. That would be a one-way trip. “How are you going to work it?” I asked Steve. “Get the crocs accustomed to the dinghy first,” he said. “Then I’ll see if I can get them interacting with me while I’m in the boat.” First he tried Agro, one of our biggest male crocs. Agro was too wary of the boat. He’s a smart crocodile. I think he remembered back when he was captured. He didn’t want any of it. We decided to try with our friend Charlie. Charlie had been very close to ending up at a farm, his skin turned into boots, bags, and belts. He definitely had attitude. He spent a lot of his time trying to kill everything within range. Steve felt good about the possibility of Charlie having a go. Because he was filming a movie and not shooting a documentary, John had a more complex setup than usual, utilizing three thirty-five-millimeter cameras. Each one would film in staggered succession, so that the film magazine changes would never happen all at once. There would never be a time when film was not rolling. We couldn’t very well ask a crocodile to wait while a fresh mag was loaded into a camera. “You need to be careful to stay out of Charlie’s line of sight,” Steve said to me. “I want Charlie focusing only on me. If he changes focus and starts attacking you, it’s going to be too difficult for me to control the situation.” Right. Steve got no argument from me. Getting anywhere near those bone-crushing jaws was the furthest thing from my mind. I wasn’t keen on being down on the water with a huge saltwater crocodile trying to get me. I would have to totally rely on Steve to keep me safe.

We witnessed an altogether unexpected transformation. He threw himself into his work as Rotary district governor, whose term of office had just started. He absorbed himself so totally that he changed his e-mail signature from “Atmaram Gawande, M.D.” to “Atmaram Gawande, D.G.” Somehow, instead of holding on to the lifelong identity that was slipping away from him, he managed to redefine it. He moved his line in the sand. This is what it means to have autonomy—you may not control life’s circumstances, but getting to be the author of your life means getting to control what you do with them.

Are you ready, Tiana? One last deal." His willingness to sacrifice some innocent person's soul alleviated the last prickle of conscience she felt over what she was about to do. This snake in the grass deserved everything that was coming to him. "Okay," Tiana said. "I'll sign it." She followed him to a wooden desk that held a lamp, and grabbed hold of the fountain pen he held out to her. Tiana bent over the contract, turning her back slightly as she scribbled across the bottom of the scroll. "Okay, it's done," she said. She turned and held the vial out to him. "Now, you drink half, and I'll drink half." His eyes were bright with triumph as he snatched the vial from her free hand, wrenched the cork out of it, and gulped down the entire contents. He threw his head back and let out a peal of laughter. But his laughter quickly died as he clutched at his throat and staggered several steps back. Tiana held out the contract to him, the words Goodbye, Shadow Man scrawled on the signature line.
Farrah Rochon (Almost There)
filling the form in.  She held up the photo and matched it with the wall, a tired, thinlooking girl looking out at her. It was set to the right of Oliver’s. They could have had them taken at the same time. She’d ask Mary.  Grace had said she had only been with Oliver — or at least that’s what the answers suggested. She’d have to ask her to make sure. It wasn’t unknown for homeless people to get into disagreements over love. When you’ve got nothing much to lose, the law doesn’t come into play when you’re asking yourself if you’re prepared to kill for someone.  Grace also admitted to being a regular heroin user and agreed to have an examination. She also said she didn’t have any diseases as far as she knew. She was the same age, too. Eighteen. Had they known each other before they’d become homeless? She’d have to find Grace to know the truth.  She went back to Oliver’s file and checked the date next to his signature. It said the seventh of September. Just under two months ago.  Jamie leafed to the next and only other page in the file. It was another shabbily photocopied sheet. Mary must have been doing them on her printer-scanner at home, creating them on her computer. She really did care. The sheet displayed a pixelated outline of the human body — no doubt an image pulled off the web and then stretched out to fill a page. The resolution was too low to keep any sort of detail, but the shape still came through okay. It was a human with their arms out, feet apart. At the top of the page, in Comic Sans, ‘Examination Sheet’ was written as the title.  In appropriately illegible handwriting for a doctor, notes had been jotted around the body. Parts had been circled with lines being drawn to the corresponding note. She read words like ‘graze’ and ‘lesion’. ‘Rash’ cropped up a few times. But there didn’t look to be anything sinister going on. The crooks of the elbows, as well as the ankles, were all circled several times but nothing was written at the sides. Those areas didn’t need explaining, though underneath, as if encapsulating the entire exam were the words ‘No signs of infection’. So he’d been relatively careful, then. Clean needles, at least. Under that, there was a little paragraph recommending a general blood panel, but overall, Oliver seemed to be in decent health. Nothing had been prescribed, it seemed.  She checked Grace’s and found it to be much the same, complete with triple circles around the elbows and ankles. Though her genital area had also been circled and the word ‘Rash’ had been written. At the bottom, a prescription had been written for azithromycin.  Jamie clicked her teeth together, rummaging in her brain for the name. Was it a gonorrhoea medication or chlamydia? She knew it was for an STD, she just couldn’t remember which. But that meant that where she’d put down ‘1’ for number of

sexual partners, she was either lying, or she’d had it for over a year. But Oliver’s chart didn’t show any symptoms and he hadn’t been prescribed.  Jamie mulled it over in her head then acted on a hunch, pulling open the top right-hand drawer. Inside was a wholesale box of condoms. She stared at it for a second. At least they were using protection. She wondered how many Mary gave out a week. Maybe there had been a third person in their relationship. A scorned ex-boyfriend who didn’t like Oliver? He obviously didn’t know about the rash — or hadn’t noticed. Grace was keeping it from him. Had he found out, confronted Grace’s other boyfriend? Or maybe the other way around. Surprised by the guy? Taken? Tied up and threatened? She had a feeling that the person hadn’t meant to kill him. If you’re going to kill someone, you don’t take their shoes and then dump them in a river. He’d either fallen in accidentally, or he’d jumped. Either way, if there wasn’t an ex — or not ex boyfriend — he was going to be someone Jamie wanted to speak to.  She held Grace’s picture up, looking past the matted hair and sunken eyes. She was young, pretty. She’d have a lot of attention out there on the streets.  Jamie closed the drawer and looked at the file again, searching for a name. She wanted to speak to the doctor. The signature just looked like a wavy line. She’d ask Mary. The chair squeaked as she pushed back from the desk and stood up, keeping the files in hand. Her watch told her it was nearly nine-thirty. Her stomach told her it was time for breakfast. Back in the main room, some of the people had cleared out, venturing back into the city. Looking for some way to get by.  Roper was still talking to Mary, who appeared to be in the middle of a speech about how these people needed more help than anyone was prepared to give, and that Oliver wouldn’t been the last. Jamie stepped around her, piqued. ‘Why do you say that?’ ‘Oh,’ she said, seeing Jamie. ‘Because people don’t want to help them and they let them hurt themselves and each other without paying them any mind.’ She narrowed her eyes. ‘Each other? Did someone have a problem with Oliver?’ ‘What?’ Mary looked sheepish all of a sudden, as if she’d dropped someone in something. ‘No, no — nothing like that. Not as far as I know, anyway,’ she added quickly. ‘Look, I just want you to find who did this — but for you to know that things are different with them. They don’t act the same — don’t believe in the same things, you know?’ She kept her voice low now. Jamie nodded. She’d worked the streets long enough to know what Mary meant. She’d seen more than she could have ever imagined. Seen people do crazy things. Things that people with something to lose would never think to do.  ‘Mrs Cartwright,’ she said after a second. ‘Grace Melver. She was friends with Oliver?’ ‘Grace?’ Mary’s eyes lit up a little and then tilted down in sadness. ‘What a sweet girl. She’ll be devastated. She’s been back every day to check whether Oliver has turned up. She’s been going out of her mind. Poor girl.’ ‘What was the nature of their relationship?’ Roper held his phone a little higher so the microphone could pick them up more easily. Mary thought for a second, aware of the recording. She chose her words carefully. ‘They were together, I suppose. As much as two people in their situation could be. They looked out for each other. Loved each other.’ ‘Did Grace have any other boyfriends?’ ‘No, no. She was sweet. She loved Oliver.’ ‘She was a heroin user, right?’ Mary looked like her face was about to droop and slip right off her head. ‘Horrible stuff. Though they

As Adam and Masa drove away from WeWork’s headquarters, Masa pulled out an iPad and began sketching the terms of a deal: SoftBank and the Vision Fund would invest more than $4 billion into WeWork. The investment would be the Vision Fund’s biggest to date, and many times larger than any funding round Adam had managed thus far. Masa signed his name, drew another line next to it, and handed Neumann the stylus. Adam had gotten WeWork this far in large part by making shrewd deals—acting coy when it suited him and playing hardball when necessary. But that morning, Adam had met with a spiritual adviser, as he often did before making big decisions, and received some advice: in life, it was sometimes necessary to do “the opposite of our nature.” Adam also knew a good deal when he saw one. After Masa dropped him off, Neumann got into his white Maybach, which had been trailing Masa’s car, turned up some rap music, and drove back to WeWork headquarters. A photo of the digital napkin, with Masa’s signature in red and Adam’s in blue, was soon circulating among WeWork executives. The entire exchange, from Masa’s twelve-minute tour to signatures sealing one of the largest venture capital investments of all time, had taken less than half an hour.

Cotton candy. The birds were exploding into cotton candy, which was now coating the street like a sugary snowstorm. It was bizarre, nonsensical, and disturbing on multiple levels. Only the younger people in attendance actually needed that signature line at the beginning. The rest had been around long enough to know a Captain Bullshit production when they saw one.
Drew Hayes (Bones of the Past (Villains' Code, #2))
Music is a universe of sound, constantly expanding and dividing. Compositions are carved into movements and passages. A half note branches off into quarter notes, sixteenth notes—the same tone, yet held for a different duration, a different effect. A harmony of multiple notes, a counterpoint of multiple melodies, an orchestra of multiple instruments: separate spheres, playing in parallel. “A composer must make order out of this hopeless profusion of noise. To play every note at once—one big, all-encompassing dot—would produce chaos. To play none would produce silence. But to space them out artfully on a staff of time: that would produce a masterpiece. “And so the composer splits the piece into measures and meter. The notes are held tight within bar lines, told when to ring out and when to die out, when to attack and when to decay. They are given finite boundaries. *You will last for eight breaths, and no more.* To them, time is fixed; to the composer, it is fluid. She could speed it up, slow it down, change duple meter to triple meter or a march to a waltz. She knows that the beauty lies not in how long the note lasts, but in the sound that it makes while it does. “Maybe, the woman thinks, our composer has done the same with us. Lest eternity seem too long and infinity too loud, she imposes measures on our existence, divides it into years, generations, incarnations. We count beats and birthdays. We emerge from the silence, and we fade back into it. This is not a punishment or a curse, any more than it is to assign a time signature to a song. After all, if there is no beat, how can there be a dance? “She does not do this to make us suffer. She does this to make us music.

Benny barely even looks at the papers before dropping his signature onto the designated line. I'm reminded of the scene in The Little Mermaid when Ariel signs her voice away to Ursula, and I try to skim for any major life-altering clauses. But I feel the pressure of everyone waiting on me and quickly sign my name, kissing my fins goodbye.

What does this mean exactly?" he said. "What does it mean? What does it mean?" She gazed at him in disbelief, then realized it wasn't a good idea to stare at him too long, because he had barely any clothes on, and she might be blushing, which was annoying. "Yes, what does it mean he said?" ....She stomped towards him. She pointed to the lines above her signature. "There" She stabbed the paper with her finger. "How much plainer can I make it?" "Love." "Yes, I believe I mentioned that some time ago." "But you hate me too." "Not as much as I ought to. For heaven's sake Lucius. Must I draw pictures? How thick can a man be? No never mind. I know the answer to that.

After a couple of hours she breathlessly put aside her palette knife and asked, ‘Did you ever experiment with your handwriting?’ I thought about this as Jacinta poured herself a glass of milk from a carton. ‘I suppose so. Once I wasn’t being forced to use joined up writing with a fountain pen any more. Why?’ ‘You sent me a few of my old exercise books from school after you cleared out Mum’s place a few years ago. Do you remember?’ I told her I didn’t. Maybe David had posted them to her. ‘When I was at primary school I wrote using the whole wide line. The capitals touched the top and everything was balloony, you know, round and chipper. But my handwriting in the later exercise books, I think I must have been fourteen or so, was completely truncated like inky footprints made by ants. I could hardly make out what I’d written. I don’t know how the teachers deciphered it. I still don’t quite know what comes naturally when I write. I don’t have a style. It changes. Sometimes it’s all swallowed up and at other times I write using tall, spindly letters. Maybe it’s the pen and paper I’m using. That makes a difference.’ ‘Yeah, it does,’ I agreed. ‘I hate thin-ruled paper.’ She took a gulp from her milk. The light was behind her. I couldn’t see her features. Her hair was pulled back into a low ponytail like the one she wore to school for years. I hated Mum. I hated Pete. I hated Gavin. I hated myself. Jacinta said, ‘When I paint I have a signature. It’s my own and I don’t have to be afraid.’ ‘I’m sorry, Jacinta. I’m so sorry. I didn’t know what to do.’ ‘I don’t blame you. But I thought you’d forgotten. Or forgiven. Or a bit of both.’ ‘A bit of both,’ I admitted. She was quiet, began to clean up. I didn’t help. I just watched. And eventually she turned back to me and said, ‘How’s Zoey?

SHANNON LIKE THE RIVER. WILL YOU PLEASE BE MY FRIEND? Two hand-drawn boxes were sketched below the writing. One box had a yes over it, and the other had a no. The yes box had a smiley face. The no box had a sad face. At the bottom of the page were the words: SIGNED BY alongside a slightly crooked line with his signature scrawled across it. Beneath the line with Johnny’s name was an empty line for my name and he had dated the note January 10, 2005, my first day at Tommen. A side note stating: PS: SHANNON PROMISES NOT TO SUE JOHNNY WHEN HE’S SIGNED FOR THE PROS FOR ANY INJURIES HE MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE CAUSED HER ON THE DATE MENTIONED ABOVE. THIS IS A VALID DISCLAIMER, I SHIT YOU NOT took up the last few lines of the page. It was ridiculous, adorable, and I couldn’t wipe the stupid smile off my face.

Losing cryptocurrency to theft or fraud can be a devastating experience, but recent advancements in blockchain technology and the growing expertise of recovery professionals have made it possible to reclaim stolen funds. Cryptocurrency transactions are recorded on the blockchain, which is public and transparent, allowing for tracing stolen assets. However, while the blockchain records every transaction, it only stores public keys and addresses, which makes it difficult to identify the thief without the aid of experts. The first line of defense is prevention. Using secure wallets, such as hardware wallets or reputable software wallets with strong encryption and two-factor authentication, is crucial for safeguarding your assets. Hardware wallets, which store your private keys offline, offer the highest level of protection by keeping your funds safe from online hacks. Cold storage wallets, which are completely disconnected from the internet, provide an added layer of security. If you fall victim to theft, however, it’s essential to act swiftly to recover your cryptocurrency. The faster you take action, the better your chances of reclaiming your assets. Start by reporting the theft to law enforcement. While law enforcement might not be able to intervene directly due to the decentralized nature of cryptocurrencies, they can help in gathering evidence for further investigation. The next step is to enlist the help of a cryptocurrency recovery expert. These professionals specialize in tracking stolen funds and working with blockchain forensic tools to identify the thief’s address and trace the movement of your stolen funds. Cryptocurrency recovery services, like FUNDS RECLIAMER COMPANY, are among the best in the field. They have the knowledge and tools to track stolen cryptocurrency, work with virtual asset service providers, and help freeze or recover your funds. In many cases, these experts can collaborate with exchanges and wallets that may have received the stolen cryptocurrency and help you retrieve your assets. Once you have recovered your stolen funds, it’s essential to take steps to prevent future thefts. Always stay informed about common scams and phishing attacks in the crypto space. Double-check wallet addresses before sending funds and consider using multi-signature wallets for additional security. In conclusion, while cryptocurrency theft is still a risk, securing your assets, acting quickly when theft occurs, and working with expert recovery services can greatly increase your chances of getting your funds back and minimizing future risks. First launched in 2009 by Lima Sky, it quickly became a household name and a must-have game on smartphones. With its simple yet incredibly addictive gameplay, Doodle Jump continues to capture the attention of both casual and hardcore gamers. In this post, we’ll explore what makes Doodle Jump so special and why it remains a top mobile game even after more than a decade. What is Doodle Jump? At its core, Doodle Jump is a vertical-scrolling platformer where you control a cute, four-legged creature called “The Doodler.” Your goal is simple: jump as high as possible by bouncing from one platform to another, avoiding enemies and obstacles along the way. The further you go, the higher your score. But don’t be fooled by the simplicity—Doodle Jump is packed with unique features and charming elements that make it endlessly entertaining. Standout Features of Doodle Jump 1. Simple Controls, Endless Fun One of the main reasons for Doodle Jump’s popularity is its intuitive control system. You tilt your phone to move left or right and tap the screen to shoot. No complex tutorials or learning curves—just jump in and play. 2. Charming Hand-Drawn Aesthetic The game’s distinctive “doodle” art style looks like it was sketched in a notebook—and that’s exactly the point. This playful, creative design gives the game its signature look and keeps it lighthearted and visually fun. 3. Challenging Yet Rewarding Gameplay As you climb higher, the platforms become trickier, enemies more aggressive, and obstacles more unpredictable. The game’s increasing difficulty makes it exciting and keeps players coming back to beat their high scores. 4. Power-Ups and Enemies Doodle Jump features a variety of power-ups like jetpacks, trampolines, and propeller hats that help you climb faster. But watch out for black holes, UFOs, and monsters that can end your run in an instant! 5. Multiple Themes and Worlds From space to underwater adventures, ninja levels, and jungle settings—Doodle Jump keeps things fresh with multiple themed environments. Each theme offers a unique twist, keeping gameplay exciting and unpredictable. Why People Still Love Doodle Jump Today Despite the rise of more complex and graphic-heavy mobile games, Doodle Jump continues to shine due to its accessibility and timeless appeal. It’s the perfect game to kill a few minutes while waiting in line, and the quick restarts make it dangerously easy to say, “Just one more try!” Plus, with global leaderboards and in-game achievements, there’s always a reason to keep jumping. Final Thoughts Whether you're new to mobile gaming or just feeling nostalgic, Doodle Jump is a perfect reminder that sometimes, the simplest games are the most fun. Its charming visuals, smooth gameplay, and addictive design make it a must-play—even in 2025.

It is all right only so long as we recognize that the end may or may not be expedient, may or may not be a good idea, but in any case has nothing to do with “morality.” Because when we start deceiving ourselves into thinking not that we want something or need something, not that it is a pragmatic necessity for us to have it, but that it is a moral imperative that we have it, then is when we join the fashionable madmen, and then is when the thin whine of hysteria is heard in the land, and then is when we are in bad trouble. And I suspect we are already there.

I've watched these waves of writing rush back and forth, though Waller, along the lines of the paper, like thoughts that wrote and instantly erased themselves. And in the lower margins, forgetfulness seemed to toss the fleeting eddy of its signature upon the empty pages.

In its next issue, the Albany Journal featured a song that began: Behold Columbia’s empire rise, On freedom’s solid base to stand; Supported by propitious skies, And seal’d by her deliverer’s hand.118 In case any reader missed its meaning, newspapers reprinting this song added a footnote stating that the last line referred to Washington’s signature on the Constitution.

Once Favreau came on board, he was paired with longtime Clinton speechwriter Lissa Muscatine to put some extra punch into the speech, by then scheduled for June 13. They both knew how to put words in someone else’s mouth. They understood the essence and curves of great oratory, how to connect the memorable one-liners with the true substance of an argument, how to twine the speaker with her narrative, and how to talk into history. It was Muscatine who had written Clinton’s landmark speech to a Beijing women’s conference in 1995, with its signature line—“human rights are women’s rights and women’s rights are human rights.” Muscatine knew Hillary’s voice as well as Hillary did.

How to Bulletproof Your Association’s Biggest Asset: The Money The 35-Point Financial Procedures Manual If you are elected treasurer of your community association and accept the challenge, there are many policies and procedures you will need to learn before you start planning budgets, collecting assessments, and signing checks. Board members and officers of all community associations in America should read the following 35-point list of financial procedures and consider it a survival manual. It is divided into four segments: •Inheriting Old Books •Guarding and Vigilance •Cyberbanking Procedures •Efficiency Maximization and Return The Takeover: Inheriting Old Books 1.Incoming treasurers or accounting managers should never accept the recording of financial books or accounts of a previous money manager. In order to be sure there is a clear line between the actions of the prior money manager and the current, a new bank account should be opened and the funds transferred to the new account. The new account helps to draw the line of accountability. Liability is also reduced by the new account, since any old checks that may be lying around will then be invalid. 2.Immediately notify the bank when officers change. Bank signature cards must always be brought current immediately following the annual election. All officers should go to the bank together to provide identification and verify signatures. 3.For incoming treasurers or accounting managers, a “transition document” stating all association account balances—including a statement as to the purpose of the reserve account, all contracts (including the vendors’ names and the expiration dates), and any outstanding payments due for services rendered or received—should be provided to the new money manager. 4.Destroy all old checks and deposit slips. Use a cross shredder or a document destruction company. 5.Keep new checks under lock and guard the keys. 6.If a board treasurer or management company refuses to give up the bank accounts (it has happened), send the person or company a certified letter demanding the rightful return

It’s been said that from the moment of the Stockholm awards ceremony, she wore a Nobel Prize charm around her neck (given to her by her husband) and signed every piece of correspondence “Rosalyn Yalow, PhD, Nobel Laureate.” It’s also been said that Yalow tacked a sign on the bulletin board in her laboratory saying, “To be considered half as good as a man, a woman must work twice as hard and be twice as good.” That’s a common feminist maxim. But Yalow added the punch line: “Fortunately, that is not difficult.” Her children dismissed the jewelry/signature talk as the typical bluster of male colleagues. But they remember the sign well.

Top 7 Mistakes to Avoid in Yahoo Email Outreach Yahoo Mail might not be the flashiest tool in your digital marketing arsenal, but it remains a reliable, free option for cold email outreach — especially for beginners or small campaigns. However, using Yahoo Mail for outreach requires care, patience, and smart practices. One wrong move, and your emails could land in the spam folder… or your account could get restricted. ✅ If you face any problem you can contact us. we are online 24/7 hours ✅ WhatsApp:+1 (581) 615-7428 ✅ Email: bestpvaservice@gmail.com ✅ Telegram: @bestpvaservice ✅ Skype: BESTPVASERVICE Here are 7 common mistakes people make when doing cold outreach with Yahoo Mail — and how to avoid them. 1. Skipping the Warm-Up Phase One of the biggest errors is sending 20, 50, or even 100 cold emails the same day you create a Yahoo account. That’s a surefire way to get flagged. Yahoo’s system tracks unusual activity and can lock or limit accounts that suddenly behave like spammers. ✅ Fix: Warm up your account. Start with 5–10 emails/day, gradually increase volume, and reply to incoming emails. 2. Using Copy-Paste Templates Without Personalization If you send the exact same message to 100 people, it screams automation — and spam filters notice. People also ignore messages that feel robotic or irrelevant. ✅ Fix: Personalize each email. Use the recipient’s name, company, or recent work. Even 1–2 personal lines can boost replies and trust. 3. Sending Too Many Emails Too Quickly Sending 40 emails in 10 minutes is a red flag. Yahoo tracks the timing and rhythm of your sending. Unnatural speed often results in temporary blocks. ✅ Fix: Space out your emails throughout the day. Send 2–3 per hour or use tools that throttle delivery. 4. Using Spammy Words and Subject Lines Subject lines like “LIMITED TIME OFFER!!!” or “Make Money Fast” are magnets for spam filters. Inside the email body, words like “free,” “urgent,” or “guaranteed” can also trigger blocks. ✅ Fix: Write subject lines that are clear and professional, like “Quick question about your team” or “Collaboration idea for [Company Name].” 5. Adding Links or Attachments Too Early Including links in your very first emails — especially from a fresh account — increases the chances of getting flagged. Attachments make it worse. ✅ Fix: Avoid links and attachments for the first 2 weeks. Once your account is trusted, you can add them carefully. 6. No Email Signature or Profile Info Emails from an anonymous or incomplete profile are often ignored. No signature = low trust. ✅ Fix: Add a simple signature with your name, role, and contact info. Also, upload a photo and fill in your Yahoo profile. ✅ If you face any problem you can contact us. we are online 24/7 hours ✅ WhatsApp:+1 (581) 615-7428 ✅ Email: bestpvaservice@gmail.com ✅ Telegram: @bestpvaservice ✅ Skype: BESTPVASERVICE 7. Ignoring Replies or Bounces If people reply and you don’t respond, or if your email bounces and you keep sending, Yahoo notices. It affects your sender reputation. ✅ Fix: Monitor replies, respond quickly, and remove invalid emails from your list. Final Thoughts Yahoo Mail can be a solid choice for low-cost email outreach in 2025 — but only if you avoid the common pitfalls. Warm up your account, personalize your approach, and focus on quality over quantity. By avoiding these 7 mistakes, you’ll improve your deliverability, protect your account, and get better results. ✅ Want another article on: “Best Tools to Track Yahoo Email Performance”? “How to Build Cold Email Lists Without Buying Data”? “Yahoo Email Outreach: 2025 Strategy Guide”? ✅ If you face any problem you can contact us. we are online 24/7 hours ✅ WhatsApp:+1 (581) 615-7428 ✅ Email: bestpvaservice@gmail.com ✅ Telegram: @bestpvaservice ✅ Skype: BESTPVASERVICE

It is all right only so long as we remember that all the ad hoc committees, all the picket lines, all the brave signatures in The New York Times, all the tools of agitprop straight across the spectrum, do not confer upon anyone any ipso facto virtue. This is my Will, this is.’ She got a bit of blotting paper over the top part of it but the bottom of it’s quite clear. She said ‘I’m writing something here on this piece of paper and I want you to be a witness of what I’ve written and of my signature at the end of it.’ So she starts writing along the page. Scratchy pen she always used, she wouldn’t use Biros or anything like that. And she writes two or three lines of writing and then she signed her name, and then she says to me, ‘Now, Mrs. Leaman, you write your name there. Your name and your address’ and then she says to Jim ‘And now you write your name underneath there, and your address too. There. That’ll do. Now you’ve seen me write that and you’ve seen my signature and you’ve written your names, both of you, to say that’s that.’ And then she says ‘That’s all. Thank you very much.’ So we goes out of the room. Well, I didn’t think nothing more of it at the time, but I wondered a bit. And it happened as I turns my head just as I was going out of the room. You see the door doesn’t always latch properly. You have to give it a pull, to make it click. And so I was doing that—I wasn’t really looking, if you know what I mean—

[*Caller ID Protection*] Is CoinJar trusted? (Digital Shield) A Complete Look at the Platform’s Safety and Reputation When it comes to buying, selling, and holding cryptocurrency, trust is the single [<1-858-379-4454>] most important factor. The crypto industry is exciting [<1-858-379-4454>] but also fast-moving and sometimes unpredictable, so choosing an exchange with a proven track record matters. CoinJar, founded in Melbourne in 2013, is one of the oldest continuously operating digital-currency platforms in the world, and it has built a reputation for [<1-858-379-4454>] reliability and user safety over more than a decade. Regulatory Compliance CoinJar is registered with AUSTRAC, Australia’s financial intelligence agency, which requires the [<1-858-379-4454>] company to follow strict anti-[<1-858-379-4454>] money-laundering (AML) and know-your-customer (KYC) standards. This means every customer must verify their identity, and all transactions are monitored for [<1-858-379-4454>] suspicious activity. Such oversight provides an extra layer of protection compared with unregulated exchanges. Security Infrastructure CoinJar safeguards [<1-858-379-4454>] the majority of user funds in cold storage wallets—offline, air-gapped systems that are extremely difficult for hackers to reach. The exchange uses multi-signature technology [<1-858-379-4454>] to authorize withdrawals, reducing the risk that a single compromised key could lead to loss of funds. Regular third-party security audits and continuous internal monitoring further strengthen the [<1-858-379-4454>] platform’s defenses. Insurance and Transparency Another trust [<1-858-379-4454>] factor is digital-asset insurance for specific currencies held by [<1-858-379-4454>] CoinJar, providing a financial backstop in rare cases of breach. The company publishes clear, upfront details on trading fees, spreads, and withdrawal costs, so customers know exactly what they [<1-858-379-4454>] are paying without hidden surprises. User Experience and Support CoinJar offers [<1-858-379-4454>] a clean, intuitive mobile app and web interface designed for both newcomers and experienced traders. In-app live chat and email support ensure that users can get assistance when needed [<1-858-379-4454>]. Although crypto support is not a substitute for financial advice, the prompt responses and well-organized help center inspire confidence that real people stand behind the service. Global Reach and Longevity Operating across Australia [<1-858-379-4454>] and the United Kingdom, CoinJar allows trading in multiple fiat currencies, including Australian dollars and British pounds. Surviving—and thriving—through [<1-858-379-4454>] numerous market cycles since 2013 shows long-term stability that many newer exchanges cannot match. Final Thoughts Trust in crypto ultimately [<1-858-379-4454>] combines regulation, technology, and personal responsibility. CoinJar has earned its strong reputation by complying with government standards, employing robust security [<1-858-379-4454>] practices, and providing clear communication to users. That said, no platform can protect you [<1-858-379-4454>] from every risk. Always enable two-factor authentication, use strong unique passwords, and be cautious with links or emails claiming to represent CoinJar. Remember that blockchain transactions are irreversible, so double-check every wallet address before sending funds [<1-858-379-4454>]. Bottom line: CoinJar [<1-858-379-4454>] stands out as a trusted exchange thanks to its regulatory compliance, security architecture, insurance coverage, and decade-long history. Does Kraken provide a wallet? [Fixed compliance terms] If you’re exploring cryptocurrency exchanges, you’ve likely [+1-305-(999)-5190] heard of Kraken, one of [+1-305-(999)-5190] the world’s longest-running and most reputable trading platforms. A common question for new [+1-305-(999)-5190] users is whether Kraken offers its own crypto wallet for storing digital assets. The answer is yes and no—and understanding the nuance [+1-305-(999)-5190] is key to keeping your funds safe. Kraken’s “Hosted” Wallet Kraken provides what’s known as a hosted wallet. When [+1-305-(999)-5190] you deposit Bitcoin, Ether [+1-305-(999)-5190], or other supported coins onto Kraken, those funds are held in wallets controlled and secured by Kraken [+1-305-(999)-5190]. This setup allows you to trade quickly without moving coins in and out for every transaction. Behind the scenes, Kraken [+1-305-(999)-5190] uses a combination of cold storage (offline vaults) and hot wallets (online for day-to-day liquidity). According to the company, the majority of customer assets remain in cold storage, protected by multi-signature protocols [+1-305-(999)-5190] and 24/7 monitoring. Not a Stand-Alone Wallet App While [+1-305-(999)-5190] these hosted wallets are convenient for trading, Kraken does not offer a separate, private wallet app like MetaMask or Trust [+1-305-(999)-5190] Wallet where you control the private keys yourself. In crypto, the rule of thumb is: “Not your keys, not your coins.” On Kraken, the exchange [+1-305-(999)-5190] manages those keys on your behalf. That means you benefit from enterprise-level security, but you’re also relying on Kraken’s systems. Security Measures Kraken [+1-305-(999)-5190] is known for a strong security track record. Features like two-factor authentication (2FA), Global Settings Lock, and withdrawal [+1-305-(999)-5190] whitelists add multiple layers of [+1-305-(999)-5190] protection. The platform undergoes regular penetration testing and encourages users to enable hardware-based authentication for maximum safety. Best Practices for Users If you plan to [+1-305-(999)-5190] trade actively, keeping funds in Kraken’s hosted wallet can be practical. However, for long-term storage, many experts [+1-305-(999)-5190] recommend transferring assets to a non-custodial[+1-305-(999)-5190] wallet—such as a hardware wallet—where you hold the private keys. This approach gives you complete control and removes third-party risk. Is Air Canada upgrade to first class worth it? [+1 833-319-6306] Many travelers often wonder if an Air Canada upgrade to first class is worth the investment. [+1 833-319-6306] The answer depends on your travel style, expectations, and budget. [+1 833-319-6306] Air Canada’s first class, often referred to as Signature Class on international and select transcontinental flights, provides a premium travel experience that goes beyond just a larger seat. [+1 833-319-6306] With lie-flat seating, superior in-flight dining, and personalized service, the comfort level is significantly higher than what you experience in economy or even business class. [+1 833-319-6306] For long-haul flights, the difference can be life-changing in terms of rest and overall enjoyment. [+1 833-319-6306] [+1 833-319-6306] Beyond the seating and in-flight perks, upgrading to Air Canada’s first class also brings value through priority check-in, expedited security, and lounge access. [+1 833-319-6306] Imagine avoiding long airport lines and instead relaxing in a quiet lounge with gourmet food and premium beverages before your flight. [+1 833-319-6306] This level of convenience appeals especially to business travelers or those embarking on long international journeys. [+1 833-319-6306] When you factor in the additional luggage allowance and faster boarding, the upgrade can start to feel like an investment in peace of mind rather than just luxury. [+1 833-319-6306] [+1 833-319-6306] Of course, whether the Air Canada upgrade to first class is worth it ultimately depends on your priorities. [+1 833-319-6306] If comfort, privacy, and exceptional service are high on your list, then the experience more than justifies the cost or Aeroplan points required. [+1 833-319-6306] For budget-conscious travelers, it might be better to consider premium economy or wait for last-minute upgrade offers that Air Canada occasionally provides. [+1 833-319-6306] Still, for those who want their journey to feel as memorable as their destination, upgrading to first class delivers unparalleled value. [+1 833-319-6306] The decision comes down to whether you view flying as simply a means of transportation or as an essential part of your travel experience. [+1 833-319-6306]
