Trauma was refusing to adhere to any schedule, didn’t seem to align itself with time. Some days it was distant as a star and other days it could wholly engulf me.
Chanel Miller (Know My Name)
This past soccer season, the league in which my son and daughter were playing had to make up two games due to rain (the price of living in Houston). The consensus in the league was that Sunday was the only available day, so the makeup games were scheduled for Sunday afternoon. My family and I sat down to discuss the matter, but no discussion was really necessary. There was no way we were going to participate. Sunday is the Lord's Day, and playing youth soccer games on Sunday makes a definite statement about the priorities in a community. Interestingly, the most flak from our decision came not from the irreligious people involved but from Christians! “You can go to church, then run home and change for the game,” one man said. One of my children's coaches added, “I'd be glad to pick them up if there is somewhere you have to be.” Nobody seemed to get it. We weren't making a decision based on the hectic nature of our Sunday schedule, nor was it a question of our adhering to a legalistic requirement handed down from our denomination. It was a matter of principle. Sunday is more than just another day. Youth sports leagues are great, but they are not sacred; Sunday is! Again, I do not believe that there is a legalistic requirement not to play games on a Sunday. Nor do I believe that the policeman, fireman, or airline mechanic who goes in to work on Sunday is out of the will of God. I do, however, think that there is a huge difference between someone whose job requires working on Sunday and a soccer league that just doesn't care.

Forgetting herself entirely, Pandora let her head loll back against Gabriel's shoulder. "What kind of glue does Ivo use?" she asked languidly. "Glue?" he echoed after a moment, his mouth close to her temple, grazing softly. "For his kites." "Ah." He paused while a wave retreated. "Joiner's glue, I believe." "That's not strong enough," Pandora said, relaxed and pensive. "He should use chrome glue." "Where would he find that?" One of his hands caressed her side gently. "A druggist can make it. One part acid chromate of lime to five parts gelatin." Amusement filtered through his voice. "Does your mind ever slow down, sweetheart?" "Not even for sleeping," she said. Gabriel steadied her against another wave. "How do you know so much about glue?" The agreeable trance began to fade as Pandora considered how to answer him. After her long hesitation, Gabriel tilted his head and gave her a questioning sideways glance. "The subject of glue is complicated, I gather." I'm going to have to tell him at some point, Pandora thought. It might as well be now. After taking a deep breath, she blurted out, "I design and construct board games. I've researched every possible kind of glue required for manufacturing them. Not just for the construction of the boxes, but the best kind to adhere lithographs to the boards and lids. I've registered a patent for the first game, and soon I intend to apply for two more." Gabriel absorbed the information in remarkably short order. "Have you considered selling the patents to a publisher?" "No, I want to make the games at my own factory. I have a production schedule. The first one will be out by Christmas. My brother-in-law, Mr. Winterborne, helped me to write a business plan. The market in board games is quite new, and he thinks my company will be successful." "I'm sure it will be. But a young woman in your position has no need of a livelihood." "I do if I want to be self-supporting." "Surely the safety of marriage is preferable to the burdens of being a business proprietor." Pandora turned to face him fully. "Not if 'safety' means being owned. As things stand now, I have the freedom to work and keep my earnings. But if I marry you, everything I have, including my company, would immediately become yours. You would have complete authority over me. Every shilling I made would go directly to you- it wouldn't even pass through my hands. I'd never be able to sign a contract, or hire employees, or buy property. In the eyes of the law, a husband and wife are one person, and that person is the husband. I can't bear the thought of it. It's why I never want to marry.

It is derision that is mainstream and easy, and actual journalism that is edgy and difficult. So try for yourself to write a proper article, involving work in the real world: traveling, interviewing, maintaining relationships with sources, researching in written records, verifying everything, writing and revising drafts, all on a tight and unforgiving schedule. If you find you like doing this, keep a blog. In the meantime, give credit to those who do all of that for a living. Journalists are not perfect, any more than people in other vocations are perfect. But the work of people who adhere to journalistic ethics is of a different quality than the work of those who do not.
Timothy Snyder (On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century)
Inside the bunker, cooperation is the order of the day. We adhere to a strict schedule for meals and bathing, exercise and sleep. Small periods of socialization are granted to alleviate the tedium. Our space becomes very popular because both children and adults have a fascination with Buttercup. He attains celebrity status with his evening game of Crazy Cat. I created this by accident a few years ago, during a winter blackout. You simply wiggle a flashlight beam around on the floor, and Buttercup tries to catch it. I’m petty enough to enjoy it because I think it makes him look stupid. Inexplicably, everyone here thinks he’s clever and delightful. I’m even issued a special set of batteries — an enormous waste — to be used for this purpose. The citizens of 13 are truly starved for entertainment.
Suzanne Collins (Mockingjay (The Hunger Games, #3))
Many of the daily schedules that we adhere to are not of our own making but are imposed on us by others. In our capitalist society we are urged, and sometimes compelled, to work harder and harder, not for our own personal satisfaction but to satisfy the unquenchable thirst for profitability of those faceless folk we call shareholders. We live in a technological world that appears to be moving faster and faster and, if we can’t keep up with the pace, society will find a robot to do our job for us. It’s scary and it’s no small wonder more and more of us want to cry out, ‘Stop and let me get off!’ In distant times people lived their lives in fear of invoking the wrath of the gods. Today we live in fear of upsetting shareholders, or the handful of individuals who keep a tight rein on our media outlets.
Cameron McNeish (There's Always The Hills)
They certainly seem enthusiastic, don’t they?” Rick observed, coming up to lean against the window frame beside her. “What exactly did you say to them when you signed the contract?” “Only something about how much value I place on people adhering to the schedule they agree on.” “You didn’t bare your teeth or anything?” “Only in a smile.” “Nice.
Suzanne Enoch (A Touch of Minx (Samantha Jellicoe, #5))
I have argued elsewhere that DWYL is an essentially narcissistic schema, facilitating willful ignorance of working conditions of others by encouraging continuous self-gratification. I have also argued that DWYL exposes its adherents to exploitation, justifying unpaid or underpaid work by throwing workers’ motivations back at them; when passion becomes the socially accepted motivation for working, talk of wages or reasonable scheduling becomes crass. This book examines the many expectations about what work can provide under the DWYL creed, and the sacrifices that workers make in order to meet those expectations.
Miya Tokumitsu (Do What You Love and Other Lies About Success and Happiness)
disregarding maintenance schedules and failing to adhere to regulators and manufacturers regulations are other surreptitious ways of saving money.
Glenn Meade (Seconds to Disaster)
For the love of Lenin, their iron adherence to schedules and rules may have conquered empires but it makes them prey to lynx pack like us.
Kate Quinn (The Diamond Eye)
It’s expected that men’s emotional growth in their early twenties will be built on the backs of the women in their lives. And this frees up time in their schedules to be the fun uncle or the fun dad or fun friend, the person who doesn’t have to follow the rules or adhere to responsibility because guess what? Someone else is taking care of it. (And that someone is almost always female.) Men still get to abdicate work at home despite no longer being the sole financial providers, because someone else will always pick up the slack.

In dreams we become timeless. We can stretch one breath to the infinite, nestle deep into that single heartbeat, and create something wondrously impossible. We can shape our worlds and live our lives to their fullest. As many lives as we want, and in any direction. But we don’t know at what point that breath, that heartbeat, will reclaim us and transform everything we built into forgotten dust. Not even a full memory, only a ghost of a dream, replaced by the incessant light demanding that our bodies adhere to its own cruel schedule.
Courtney M. Privett (Dustlight (The Bacra Chronicles, #5))
As Ross entered the kitchen, he saw Ernest sitting at the scrubbed wooden table. The boy wolfed down a plate of breakfast as if it were the first decent meal he'd had in months. Sophia stood at the range with the scrawny cook-maid, apparently showing her how to prepare the morning's fare. "Turn them like this," Sophia was saying, expertly flipping a row of little cakes on a griddle pan. The kitchen atmosphere was especially fragrant today, spiced with frying bacon, coffee, and sizzling batter. Sophia looked fresh and wholesome, the trim curves of her figure outlined by a white apron that covered her charcoal-gray dress. Her gleaming hair was pinned in a coil at the top of her head and tied with a blue ribbon. As she saw him standing in the doorway, a smile lit her sapphire eyes, and she was so dazzlingly pretty that Ross felt a painful jab low in his stomach. "Good morning, Sir Ross," she said. "Will you have some breakfast?" "No, thank you," he replied automatically. "Only a jug of coffee. I never..." He paused as the cook set a platter on the table. It was piled with steaming batter cakes sitting in a pool of blackberry sauce. He had a special fondness for blackberries. "Just one or two?" Sophia coaxed. Abruptly it became less important that he adhere to his usual habits. Perhaps he could make time for a little breakfast, Ross reasoned. A five-minute delay would make no difference in his schedule. He found himself seated at the table facing a plate heaped with cakes, crisp bacon, and coddled eggs. Sophia filled a mug with steaming black coffee, and smiled at him once more before resuming her place at the range with Eliza. Ross picked up his fork and stared at it as if he didn't quite know what to do with it. "They're good, sir," Ernest ventured, stuffing his mouth so greedily that it seemed likely he would choke. Ross took a bite of the fruit-soaked cake and washed it down with a swallow of hot coffee. As he continued to eat, he felt an unfamiliar sense of well-being. Good God, it had been a long time since he'd had anything other than Eliza's wretched concoctions. For the next few minutes Ross ate until the platter of cakes was demolished. Sophia came now and then to refill his cup or offer more bacon. The cozy warmth of the kitchen and the sight of Sophia as she moved about the room caused a tide of unwilling pleasure inside him.

,Patient No-Shows with Appointment Management Software Introduction Patient no-shows are one of the biggest concerns for clinics and healthcare organizations today. These missed appointments disorganize the clinic’s schedules, result in financial losses, and waste resources. For patients, missing a visit can delay necessary treatment and have a negative effect on health outcomes. Appointment booking software provides great ways to minimize the negative impacts of no-shows. In conjunction with patient engagement software solutions, clinics would achieve optimum communication to enhance appointment adherence by patients and to increase the overall performance of the clinic. This article also discusses the no-show effects, how appointment management tools reduce those, and the wider advantages they bring to clinics and patients. The Impact of Patient No-Shows Missed appointments are more than inconveniences; they hold serious meanings for clinics. Waste of Time Slots: Every absence on the schedule springs an empty slot that could have been filled by even one other patient. This leads to long-term underutilized staff and wasted resources. Loss of Income: Clinics must run on a business model, and that happens through direct impacts on the bottom line from no-shows. Missed visits are lost income and thus lost viability. Decreased Quality of Care: Patients whose conditions worsen because they do not attend appointments face delays in their treatment. All postponed appointments thus continue contributing to an already full clinic schedule system. Increased strain on operations: In addition to inefficiencies, staff will now be required to spend further time following up with no-show patients and rearranging schedules to fill the gaps. How Appointment Scheduling Software Helps Appointment scheduling software serves its channel effectively by reminding patients, offering reschedules, and other such patient-friendly features in reducing no-shows. Automated appointment reminder system. How it works: Reminds patients via SMS, email, or phone call. The system can send the reminder days or hours before the appointment. Benefits: Keeps the patients informed and ready; reduces chances for forgetting the appointment. Convenient rescheduling ways How it works: Patients may reschedule or cancel appointments using an online portal or mobile application. Live availability makes an instant and seamless rescheduling. Benefits: Opens the slot to other patients and eliminates anxiety for patients who cannot attend at the original time. Visibility All-time Availability. How it works: Using data from various offices and locations, it creates a view of all appointments and availability. Benefits: Minimizes rivalries on appointments with patients. Change in appointment scheduling behavior and clear appointment scheduling. Minute App Scheduling How it works: The patient makes his appointment based on a trained interview with any front office person. In the application, online mode is simple and has no technical hassles. Benefits: Reducing Broken Appointments by 60%. Here are just a few of many ways in which effective appointment scheduling software will greatly enhance the no-show rates by automating reminders, rescheduling, and other such patient-friendly features. Automated Appointment Reminders How it works: Patients are reminded either through SMS, e-mail, or calls. The system can send reminders a day or hours before the appointment. Benefits: Keeps the patients informed and ready; reduces chances of forgetting the appointment. Conclusion No-shows have always posed a mighty blow to clinics as they can influence revenue, operations, and eventually, patient care. Clinthora’s clinic management software solutions
