To strive for change, for true goodness in this mortal world, one must acknowledge and accept, within one's own soul, that this mortal reality has purpose in itself, that its greatest value is not for us, but for our children and their children. If the soul truly survives the passage, then it behooves us – each of us, my friends – to nurture a faith in similitude: what awaits us is a reflection of what we leave behind, and in the squandering of our mortal existence, we surrender the opportunity to learn the ways of goodness, the practice of sympathy, empathy, compassion and healing – all passed by in our rush to arrive at a place of glory and beauty, a place we did not earn, and most certainly do not deserve.

In his indispensable book The Return of the Prodigal Son, Henri Nouwen boldly invites us to imagine ourselves not just in the place of the younger son, and then the elder one, but also in the place of the father. Many of Jesus’ parables are waiting for this kind of attention—his shepherds, widows and vineyard owners are not just clues to the true nature and identity of God, but to what we are meant to become by grace. But for us the path to becoming the shepherd requires first recognizing that we are the lost sheep; to become the searching widow, we must understand that we are the coin lost in the cranny; and to become the father requires first coming to terms with ourselves as his equally foolish, equally prodigal children. And that is, in a nutshell, what discipleship is about. In the crucible of discipleship we come to see just how distorted our vision for our own power has been and how small we have become, but we also discover just how lavish our Father’s goodness is and how much glory is waiting for us, how much more we are meant to be.

There are no shortcuts. The lazy will accomplish nothing in life. The human path of least resistance is the path to total failure and oblivion. You must always walk the hard path. The fewer the people on the path, the greater the glory. A genius is alone on his path.

So often we humanly view a “no” from God as a failure on our part. We tried this, but someone else was chosen. We wanted to go, but we could not gain entrance. If all the previously mentioned elements are in place, we need to realize that the “no” originates from God. God remains aware and actively involved in directing our lives. A certain liberation takes place when we appropriate this by faith. Instead of looking at “no” as a personal failure, we can view it as an aspect of the overall direct and particular plan God has for us. Instead of “no” highlighting deficiencies and limitations on our part, we can view it as the active work of our heavenly Father who masterminds the paths and timetable we are to travel, as well as the means necessary to bring us there. Such recognition is not an escapist mentality—rather it is the appraising of your circumstances through the grid of biblical truth. However, as before, the previous elements of obedience and faith must be operative. If you are truly walking with the Lord, a “no” really is from God. Luke emphasized this in the text by noting the active involvement of the Holy Spirit (16:6), Spirit of Jesus (16:7), and God the Father (16:10). It is no coincidence Luke presented all the members of the Trinity in a passage where humanly it appears that none were working. Walking by faith comes down to the proper spiritual perspective—and you must have it when you are on the road to Troas with the Lord.
