When life gives you lemons. . . You might as well shove 'em where the sun don't shine, because you sure as hell aren't ever going to see any lemonade.
Rob Thurman (Nightlife (Cal Leandros, #1))
I have people in my life, of course. Some write; some don't. Some read; some don't. Some stare vacantly into space when I talk the geeky talk and walk the geeky walk, but they make killer chocolate chip pancakes and so all is forgiven.
Rob Thurman
We all have our security blankets in this world. Some are just sharper than others.

The job of feets is walking, but their hobby is dancing.
Amit Kalantri (Wealth of Words)
What're you still doing up? You know all good little ninjas should be in bed, visions of homicidal sugarplums dancing in their heads.
Rob Thurman (Nightlife (Cal Leandros, #1))
I slept and the night rolled over into day like a dog. Another post-meridian awakening - sunshine on empty bottles, tangled clothes. I dozed while the temperature rose.

Bulgaria, I reflected as I walked back to the hotel, isn’t a country; it’s a near-death experience.

Snap judgments? I'd gotten over those about the time I was toilet trained. Swore off diapers and faith in the human experience all in one week.

She began to realize some decisions cannot be undone no matter how hard you try.

The mind, stretched to new dimensions by images, thoughts and ideas, can never return to its former shape.
Travis Luedke (The Nightlife: Paris (The Nightlife, #3))
Moon in the sky, stars out, the wide-open expanse of nothing: it made him feel free and alive as the daytime never did.
Chuck Wendig (Wanderers (Wanderers, #1))
Ana was a perpetual victim in a never-ending search for a victimizer.
Travis Luedke (The Nightlife: Las Vegas (The Nightlife, #2))
He parked his car carefully, made sure he'd set all the locks and the alarm. On the steps he kept looking behind him, snapping glances into shadows like he expected this to be a set-up with my gang waiting to roll him. Nervous. But I got this feeling the possibility of danger was all part of it for him. What he wanted was something with an edge to it, something stamped as unmistakable bad. Welcome to the club, dude.
Matthew Stokoe (High Life)
I missed the anonymity-the ability to run to the market without running into my third-grade teacher. I missed the nightlife-the knowledge that if I wanted to, there was always an occasion to get dressed up and head out for dinner and drinks. I missed the restaurants-the Asian, the Thai, the Italian the Indian. I was already tired of mashed potatoes and canned green beans. I missed the culture- the security that comes from being on the touring schedule of the major Broadway musicals. I missed the shopping-the funky boutiques, the eclectic shops, the browsing. I missed the city.
Ree Drummond (The Pioneer Woman: Black Heels to Tractor Wheels)
Her loving hands, soft lips, and perfumed scents were an addiction for which he had no cure.
Travis Luedke (The Nightlife: Paris (The Nightlife, #3))
She exuded sexuality almost tangible, like ink obscuring the waters around the octopus before it strikes.
Travis Luedke (The Nightlife: Las Vegas (The Nightlife, #2))
There is no night life in Spain. They stay up late but they get up late. That is not night life. That is delaying the day. Night life is when you get up with a hangover in the morning. Night life is when everybody says what the hell and you do not remember who paid the bill. Night life goes round and round and you look at the wall to make it stop. Night life comes out of a bottle and goes into a jar. If you think how much are the drinks it is not night life.
Ernest Hemingway (88 Poems)
Most kids don't believe in fairy tales very long. Once they hit six or seven they put away "Cinderella" and her shoe fetish, "The Three Little Pigs" with their violation of building codes, "Miss Muffet" and her well-shaped tuffet—all forgotten or discounted. And maybe that's the way it has to be. To survive in the world, you have to give up the fantasies, the make-believe. The only trouble is that it's not all make-believe. Some parts of the fairy tales are all too real, all too true. There might not be a Red Riding Hood, but there is a Big Bad Wolf. No Snow White, but definitely an Evil Queen. No obnoxiously cute blond tots, but a child-eating witch… yeah. Oh yeah.
Rob Thurman (Nightlife (Cal Leandros, #1))
At least that's what his note said, along with a scathing reminder that dishes didn't wash themselves and the fungus in the bathroom was one day away from evolving into sentient life. I folded the note into an airplane and sailed it across the room. It ended up perched jauntily on top of the ancient television. It looked good there and I left it as a tribute to freedom-loving fungi everywhere.
Rob Thurman (Nightlife (Cal Leandros, #1))
They were two people staring at each other knowingly, communicating psychically amidst an ocean of deaf, dumb and blind meatsacks.
Travis Luedke (The Nightlife: Las Vegas (The Nightlife, #2))
The veneer of civilization fell away to reveal desperate animals, humanity at their worst.
Travis Luedke (The Nightlife: Paris (The Nightlife, #3))
Everybody has their security blankets in this world. Some are just sharper than others.
Cal Leandros
Ana never saw the rotten apples littering the ground as she continually reached for the rare golden apple on the tree. Ana had stepped in a lot of rotten apples in her lifetime. She should have learned by now.
Travis Luedke (The Nightlife: Las Vegas (The Nightlife, #2))
There are a lot of truths in this world. When it rains it pours. It's always darkest before the dawn. He who smelt it dealt it.
Rob Thurman (Nightlife (Cal Leandros, #1))
The waters of her emotions ran deep, and he was only privy to the splashes on the surface.
Travis Luedke (The Nightlife: Paris (The Nightlife, #3))
There are monsters among us. There always have been and there always will be. I’ve known that ever since I can remember, just like i’ve always known I was one.
Rob Thurman (Nightlife (Cal Leandros, #1))
Oh, yeah, any functioning society has got to have its doctors, its teachers, and its nightlife photographers.
Leila Sales (This Song Will Save Your Life)
And who died and made you boss?" But I knew a lost cause when I saw it and was already pulling my hair back with nimble fingers. Niko slapped a shoulder holster against my chest. "No one. Like all truly great dictators, I seized that power myself. Now finish up. We leave in five minutes.
Rob Thurman (Nightlife (Cal Leandros, #1))
A history of nightlife!--what an interesting concept. A history of a people, told not through their daily travails and successive political upheavals, but via the changes in their nightly celebrations and unwindings. History is, in this telling, accompanied by a bottle of Malbec, some fine Argentine steak, tango music, dancing, and gossip. It unfolds through and alongside illicit activities that take place in the multitude of discos, dance parlors, and clubs. Its direction, the way people live, is determined on half-lit streets, in bars, and in smoky late-night restaurants. This history is inscribed in songs, on menus, via half-remembered conversations, love affairs, drunken fights, and years of drug abuse.
David Byrne (Bicycle Diaries)
Most kids don't believe in fairy tales very long. Once they hit six or seven they put away "Cinderella" and her shoe fetish, "The Three Little Pigs" with their violation of building codes, "Miss Muffet" and her well‐shaped tuffet—all forgotten or discounted. And maybe that's the way it has to be. To survive in the world, you have to give up the fantasies, the make‐believe.
Rob Thurman (Nightlife (Cal Leandros, #1))
Nightlife is not for sissies, except of course for career sissies; an evening out requires at least a full day of minute preparation. . . . People move to New York to invent themselves, and nightclubs provide a runway for the results. It’s easy to spend twenty hours per day slaving in a Pennsylvania coal mine or threshing some Nebraska oat crop; going out in New York is work.
Paul Rudnick (Social Disease)
Every inner touch, every one of its fingerprints on my brain, burned like acid. It shredded the walls of my soul like tissue paper, it clawed its way into my very center, I couldn’t tell anymore where it began and I ended. It poured into me like a river into the sea, mixing, melding, until we were one. One. For better or worse. Until death do us part.
Rob Thurman (Nightlife (Cal Leandros, #1))
A strikingly beautiful shit-storm of trouble––Ana attracted trouble like no one else.
Travis Luedke (The Nightlife: Las Vegas (The Nightlife, #2))
He stayed under the fluorescent street light until the sounds of traffic and nightlife faded into silence, and only then did he look up into the night sky, the way he usually did when he was looking for answers.
Grace Curley (The Light that Binds Us)
For folks who have that casual-dude energy coursing through their bloodstream, that's great. But gays should not grow up alienated just for us to alienate each other. It's too predictable, like any other cycle of abuse. Plus, the conformist, competitive notion that by "toning down" we are "growing up" ultimately blunts the radical edge of what it is to be queer; it truncates our colorful journey of identity. Said another way, it's like living in West Hollywood and working a gay job by day and working it in the gay nightlife, wearing delicate shiny shirts picked from up the gay dry cleaners, yet coquettishly left unbuttoned to reveal the pec implants purchased from a gay surgeon and shown off by prancing around the gay-owned-and-operated theater hopped up on gay health clinic steroids and wheat grass purchased from the friendly gay boy who's new to the city, and impressed by the monstrous SUV purchased from a gay car dealership with its rainbow-striped bumper sticker that says "Celebrate Diversity." Then logging on to the local Gay.com listings and describing yourself as "straight-acting." Let me make myself clear. This is not a campaign for everyone to be like me. That'd be a total yawn. Instead, this narrative is about praise for the prancy boys. Granted, there's undecided gender-fucks, dagger dykes, faux-mos, po-mos, FTMs, fisting-top daddies, and lezzie looners who also need props for broadening the sexual spectrum, but they're telling their own stories. The Cliff's Notes of me and mine are this: the only moments I feel alive are when I'm just being myself - not some stiff-necked temp masquerading as normal in the workplace, not some insecure gay boy aspiring to be an overpumped circuit queen, not some comic book version of swank WeHo living. If that's considered a political act in the homogenized world of twenty-first century homosexuals, then so be it. — excerpt of "Praise For The Prancy Boys," by Clint Catalyst appears in first edition (ISBN # 1-932360-56-5)
Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore (That's Revolting!: Queer Strategies for Resisting Assimilation)
He knew that if Michelle entered into the walls of the Vatican, she’d corrupt every single clergyman within, causing them to forsake their vows in trade for a few moments with her. With one glance men would happily follow her to the bowels of hell and swim across the lake of fire to get to her.
Travis Luedke (The Nightlife: Las Vegas (The Nightlife, #2))
The world you once knew is no more for you.
Travis Luedke (The Nightlife: New York (The Nightlife, #1))
The front door had been secure at some point in time, I suppose, but now it usually hung ajar by a few inches, the gap‐toothed grin of a dirty old man.
Rob Thurman (Nightlife (Cal Leandros, #1))
It's just I'd rather sleep through the days so I'll be awake for the nights, when the boys are out.
Kerry Cohen (Loose Girl: A Memoir of Promiscuity)
Alone: it was no way to live and it was no way to die.
Rob Thurman (Nightlife (Cal Leandros, #1))
There’s something sexy about a naked woman gritting her teeth in pain, even when it shouldn’t be sexy.
Travis Luedke
The night has already turned on that imperceptible pivot where two A.M. changes to six A.M. You know this moment has come and gone, but you are not yet willing to concede that you have crossed the line beyond which all is gratuitous damage and the palsy of unraveled nerve endings. Somewhere back there you could have cut your losses, but your rode past that moment on a comet trail of white powder and now you are trying to hang on to the rush.
Jay McInerney (Bright Lights, Big City)
The start and unexpected miracle of a night fades out with the lingering death of the last starts and the premature birth of the first newsboys. The flame retreats to some remote and platonic fire; the white heat has gone from the iron and the glow from the coal.
F. Scott Fitzgerald (The Beautiful and Damned)
The moon cant stay without the night.life cant be life without problems.i cant be myself without you. everything is destined to be together. i wish we r destined to be together
Charles L. Mee Jr.
But hoping you never saw someone again is a damn sight different from wishing them dead.
Rob Thurman (Nightlife (Cal Leandros, #1))
He found her utterly fascinating, a nameless, homeless, naked vampire, sleeping away the day in his bed, wanted by state and federal police.
Travis Luedke (The Nightlife San Antonio (The Nightlife))
The guy had guts—I had to give him that. Later on I was hoping for a first-hand look at them.
Rob Thurman (Nightlife (Cal Leandros, #1))
I looked over at the empty, black windows of the Whites' apartment, windows that were warm and yellow just yesterday, and I shivered.
Jackie French Koller (Nothing to Fear (Gulliver Books))
His limited intimate encounters taught him there was considerable effort and occasional begging involved in the removal of women’s clothing.
Travis Luedke (The Nightlife Series Omnibus (The Nightlife))
Pregnancy sucks the nightlife out of you.
Laurie Perez (The Power of Amie Martine)
She sat there, a wild heart on a chair with gin lips and nightlife eyes. The Gatsby Girl. Longing for more in the shallowness of it all.
Marie-Kristin Hofmann (Remember the wild girl)
And now, at dusk, outside my window, the trees shake their heads like disco dancers in the strobe lights of nightlife long ago.
Martin Amis
I'd like to be a wolf. Not all the time. Just sometimes. In the dark. I would run through the forests as a wolf at night," said Richard, mostly to himself. "I'd never hurt anyone. Not that kind of wolf. I'd just run and run forever in the moonlight, through the trees, and never get tired or out of breath, and never have to stop. That's what I want to be when I grow up...
Neil Gaiman (Smoke and Mirrors: Short Fiction and Illusions)
Sevarin had been dismissive about the chance of finding out anything useful from the cops, but when it came to getting information, I had an edge he didn't. Sevarin did not make a killer lasagne.
Sarah Zettel (A Taste of the Nightlife (Vampire Chef, #1))
the familiar smells of a busy tavern at an hour closer to dawn than dinner. Sweat, scalded meat, puke, blood, smoke, and a dozen kinds of bad ale and wine: the bouquet of the civilized nightlife.
Scott Lynch (Red Seas Under Red Skies (Gentleman Bastard, #2))
Once the baby was here, her body would return to normal and the rest of her life would follow. She’d be able to stay awake past 9 p.m., wear clothes that didn’t resemble camping equipment and be out and about researching nightlife for ‘Girl About Town’.
Emma Robinson (The Undercover Mother)
Walking toward the music” isn’t a bad philosophy of life. Doors might seem closed, the evening might seem prematurely over, but if you can catch a glimpse of nightlife or hear the sound of music in the distance, why not walk toward it and see what you find?
Gary L. Thomas (The Sacred Search: What If It's Not about Who You Marry, But Why?)
[T]he piano was to Harlem what brass bands had been to New Orleans. The instrument represented conflicting possibilities -- a pathway for assimilating traditional highbrow culture, a calling card of lowbrow nightlife, a symbol of middle-class prosperity, or, quite simply, a means of making a living.
Ted Gioia (The History of Jazz)
Night had fallen on Manta by the time we awoke and a cooling breeze was rustling the palm fronds of the tree outside our window. We could hear laughter below as the nightlife of Manta got underway. Girls dressed for clubbing were leaving the hotel hoping to have their world rocked after a night of dancing and wake up to discover he really was Prince Charming in disguise. In truth he would be the tatted-up, dumbed-down, self-involved bad-boy they’d been drawn to like a moth to a flame after several drinks, because he was the male mirror-image of them. The tap-tap of high-heeled shoes designed to accentuate the girls’ derrieres sounded like an ancient tribal mating song being drummed out on concrete.
Bobby Underwood (The Long Gray Goodbye (Seth Halliday #2))
Stay home and the crooks win. They get the night, by default and concession, the night which should rightly belong to all of us.
Claire Cross (Double Trouble (The Coxwells, #2))
when we're done, I'll be where the night never stops cradling a bruise that's shaped like you wondering why sleep never came to me wondering how I still dreamed
Alicen Grey (Wolves and Other Nightmares)

Rob Thurman (Nightlife (Cal Leandros, #1))
Like Mardi Gras and Halloween rolled into a public party at the Playboy mansion, Rio during Carnaval is like no other place on earth. And the freak-flags fly like the color guard of an invading army.
James Schannep (Murdered: Can You Solve the Mystery? (Click Your Poison, #2))
Many tourists visit Athens without ever venturing beyond the Plaka (Old Town) and the ancient zone. With limited time, this is not a bad plan, as greater Athens offers few sights (other than the excellent National Archaeological Museum). But for a more authentic taste of the city, check out the trendy Psyrri district—right next door to the Plaka—with its dilapidated-chic hipster dining and nightlife scene.
Rick Steves (Rick Steves Greece: Athens & the Peloponnese)
In fact, I didn't care about getting laid anymore. Wandering around Shinjuku on a noisy Saturday night, observing the mysterious energy created by a mixture of sex and alcohol, I began to feel that my own desire was a puny thing.
Haruki Murakami (Norwegian Wood)
Anyone with less intestinal fortitude, inhuman or not, would've been curled up on the floor sucking his thumb. I basked in the attention and took it as my due. I'd always known I was a star. Without me, the Auphe were nothing. I was the key, and the gate was a lock only I could open. At this moment I was, as I'd always suspected, God. Spreading my arms, I let my head fall back and closed my eyes, my streaming hair a silk touch on my shoulder blades. "Suffer the little children to come unto me." Opening my eyes, I smiled gently at the Auphe.
Rob Thurman (Nightlife (Cal Leandros, #1))
Isabel, remember we used to talk about a honeymoon in Spain?" "Of course." "It woulda been a blast. I took a walk last night. Two in the morning, it felt like two in the afternoon. Traffic. People on the street: families, old folks on benches. The bars and restaurants were full, everybody carrying on. Hard to believe there's an economic crisis." "Maybe they should shut up, get some sleep, and fix the mess.
Sebastian Rotella (The Convert's Song (Valentine Pescatore #2))
The Republic of Foo, our high-investment, intangible economy of the future, has significantly overhauled its land-use rules, particularly in major cities, making it easier to build housing and workplaces; at the same time, it invests significantly in the kind of infrastructure needed to make cities livable and convivial, in particular, effective transport and civic and cultural amenities, from museums to nightlife. In some cases, this involves rejecting big development plans that destroy existing places. It has faced political costs in making this change, especially from vested interests opposed to new development or gentrification, but the increased economic benefits of vibrant urban centers have provided enough incentive to tip the balance of power in favor of development. The cities of the Kingdom of Bar have chosen one of two unfortunate paths: in some cases, they have privileged continuity over dynamism in its towns—creating places like Oxford in the UK, which are beautiful and full of convivial public spaces, but where it is very hard to build anything, meaning few people can take advantage of the economic potential the place creates. Other cities resemble Houston, Texas, in the 1990s—a low-regulation paradise where an absence of planning laws keeps home and office prices low, but where the lack of walkable centers and convivial places makes it harder for intangibles to multiply. (To Houston’s credit, it has changed for the better in the last twenty years.) The worst of Bar’s cities fail in both regards, underinvesting in urban amenities and making it hard to build. In all three cases, the economic disadvantage of not having vibrant cities that can grow have become larger and larger as the importance of intangibles has increased.
Jonathan Haskel (Capitalism without Capital: The Rise of the Intangible Economy)
He also stayed awake all night many times in the neon-lit insomnia of cities where the all-nighter is culturally certified and commercially mandated. But the all-nighter of the bohemian heroes was something else: it was spiritual work, the night shift; they stayed awake so the demons that haunt the world wouldn’t get them in their sleep.
Andrei Codrescu (Wakefield)
We can’t tell if ever night falls asleep Our slumber veils many secrets: deep The moonlit visage of this city life Shines through the blade from a glistening knife From the poem "City Night

Amanda Capobianco who first coined the hashtag #HealingIsTheNewNightlife after moving to Williamsburg in Brooklyn, where she expected to spend late nights listening to bands in grimy dive bars and instead found herself socializing at sound baths, moon circles, and breathwork sessions.
Ruby Warrington (Sober Curious: The Blissful Sleep, Greater Focus, Limitless Presence, and Deep Connection Awaiting Us All on the Other Side of Alcohol)
Nightlife is filled with personal tragedies.
Naguib Mahfouz
People often romanticize the nightlife. And they’re right to. Nothing says romance like not noticing the woman perched on your balcony watching you as you stroke yourself slowly. Seriously, will this guy never let himself come? I have three other men I have to get to, and this guy’s having a late-night date with his right hand. Just get on with it and go to bed.
A.K. Koonce (An Assassin's Death (The Huntress #1))
the one with the lower rate. A few unique things to see in Stockholm include the Nobelmuseet, the Nobel Museum, which tells of the creation of the Nobel Prize and the creativity of its laureates, and the Spiritmuseet, where you can learn about the nation’s complicated relationship with alcohol. Sweden is associated with design (and not just Ikea) and many shops sell Swedish‐only design. Oudoor activities in summer include hiking trails through the islands and archipelago. Winter activities stretch to cross‐country skiing, ice skating and snow hiking. Nightlife is expensive, cover charges to bars can be high and, bizarrely, the minimum age for drinking varies in an arbitrary fashion as it is up to each establishment to make its own decision – it can be anything from 17 to 27. So take identification with you. There are two airports serving Stockholm. Arlanda is 40 kms north of the city and serves main airlines. Skavsta, 100 kms to the south, serves the budget airlines. Both airports have coaches to take visitors directly to the city centre. Downside: Many independently owned restaurants and cafes close for holidays between July and August which can limit the range of places to eat. To read: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson. This trilogy of a financial journalist and the tattooed genius with a motive to fight the dark right‐wing forces of Swedish society romped through the bestseller lists.

nightlife. She was more of a dancing shoes kind of girl than a hiking boots kind of girl. There was a pained sweetness about her
Tony Parsons (Tell Him He's Dead (Max Wolfe, #4.5))
After 2 years in London of working 7 shifts 6 nights PW as a singing-waitress in a generic and nameless uniform for a restaurant manager that liked to grope mine and every other girl’s butt when we walked past, I decided to break out of the restaurant business and all that nightlife had to offer. We all start somewhere.
Lisa Goldin (40 Ways To Tame A Musician)
For many in the audience, the attention-starved maniacs on the small Metro stage were a welcome reprieve from the bar’s regular crowd of sweaty boys eye-fucking each other from across the patio. Blindly stumbling ahead, Merrie had busted open the doors of Brooklyn nightlife and invited the amateurs in.
Nicole Pasulka (How You Get Famous: Ten Years of Drag Madness in Brooklyn)
if only because I was returning to Manhattan. Four years in Cambridge had been a pleasant diversion, but I missed the action and nightlife of the best city in the world.
Emily Giffin (Meant to Be)
The Swedish press had of course yet to grasp what was happening – what a lively scene had been created in the capital over the last few years – but what did it matter when Angello’s girlfriend had her own blog? Among pictures of high heels and skincare pointers, she talked about when her boyfriend spun in the booths at the clubs at Stureplan – the nightlife centre of Östermalm – at the venues that Filip Åkesson dreamed of one day getting into. She gossiped about the drinks at Grodan, F12 and Laroy, and posted pictures of Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso, two other producers with whom Steve Angello was increasingly collaborating.

Rob Thurman (Nightlife (Cal Leandros, #1))
New York City nightlife is different, louder. The entire culture is meant to be a secret, but the noise from various clubs is deafening.

Christine is his daughter. Sole heir. Thirty-one. Likes her nightlife, I understand.” I sipped carefully before speaking. “And she’s the new CEO?” “Uh huh.” I glanced over to where Kirsten studied my face over the rim of her cup. “What does she know about running a shipping company?” “Not. One. Damn. Thing.
Nathan Lowell (Owner's Share (Golden Age of the Solar Clipper, #6))
Andrei perched on the rooftop of the cinema and looked out at Westwood’s nightlife bustling before him. He was mounted on the single, cream, stoned gargoyle built above in the corner of the theatre. He and his gothic animal breathed under the cold moon. Yes. He always felt like the moon—generally unnoticed by the world, that never minds—and navigated richly through his life alone and uninterrupted, like a ghost. Truth is an unobvious color. Those who attempt truth will never make billboards or conversations but usually sift in the background in awkward veritas.

Susan Hawley, I suspect, is a woman much in demand in the rarefied zone of political nightlife in this city. She is the ultimate ornament to be hung from the arm of important political figures or captains of industry during quiet dinner meetings. In her commercial dealings, hundred-dollar bills appear in considerable quantity in her purse the morning after, like fishes and loaves in the basket after the Sermon on the Mount.

In the 1950s Detroit was undergoing changes in the city and factories with enormous political consequences. When I arrived in Detroit the city had just begun Urban Renewal (which blacks renamed “Negro Removal”) in the area near downtown where most blacks were concentrated. Hastings Street and John R, the two main thoroughfares that were the hub of the commerce and nightlife of the black community, were still alive with pedestrians. Large sections of the inner city, however, were being bulldozed to build the Ford Freeway crisscrossing the city from east to west, the Lodge Freeway bisecting the city from north to south, and the Fisher and Chrysler Freeways coming from Toledo and proceeding all the way north to the Upper Peninsula. These freeways were built to make it easy to live in the suburbs and work in the city and at the same time to expand the car market. So in 1957 whites began pouring out of the city by the tens of thousands until by the end of the decade one out of every four whites who had lived in the city had left. Their exodus left behind thousands of houses and apartments for sale and rental to blacks who had formerly been confined inside Grand Boulevard, a horseshoe-shaped avenue delimiting the inner city, many of whom had been uprooted by Negro Removal. Blacks who had been living on the East Side, among them Annie Boggs, began buying homes on the West Side and the North End. The black community was not only expanding but losing the cohesiveness it had enjoyed (or endured) when it was jammed together on the Lower East Side. New neighbors no longer served as extended family to the young people growing up in the new black neighborhoods. Small businesses owned by blacks and depending on black customers went bankrupt, eliminating an entrepreneurial middle class that had played a key role in stabilizing the community. By the end of the 1950s one-fourth of the buildings inside the Boulevard stood vacant. At the same time all Americans, regardless of race, creed, or national origin, were being seduced by the consumerism being fostered by large corporations so that they could sell the abundance of goods coming off the American assembly lines. All around us in the black community parents were determined to give their children “the things I didn’t have.

I asked the Count how long he had been a photographer. "Close to six years, now. I started taking photos of Venice's nightlife, people in trendy clubs and bars, when a friend recommended I approach Vogue Italia and show them my portfolio. They loved what they saw and hired me on the spot. My assignments were to photograph that which was considered cutting edge, places frequented by Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals and Trans-gendered people.

I was desperately trying to relive the love we shared after you left. I began visiting underground gay sex clubs in the hope of finding another like you. Instead I spiraled into disillusionment. I used sex as a pervasive tool to drown my sorrowful loneliness, which drove me deeper into abysmal miseries. I knew I had to leave London and salvation arrived with my acceptance into The Belfast College of Art and Technology, to pursue my Foundation Art Studies. I plunged myself passionately into my college projects in war-torn Belfast, where the IRA (Irish Republican Army) were in conflict with the British Army. There wasn’t much a nightlife to divert my attention, and I had the perfect opportunity to devote time to my numerous artistic pursuits. Being a workaholic, I channeled my pervasive vexations into my eternal love: fashion design.

I was curious and excited to go to a dance club since I had never been and was dying to experience Dubai's nightlife. I said excitedly, "Yah! Let's go! I've never been to a nightclub. I want to go!

Staten Island      Best for: Views of Manhattan from the ferry      What you won’t find: Notable museums, nightlife, hotels, theaters, truly great restaurants, interesting architecture      And I’ll again be blunt: Except for the fun and free ferry ride here, there’s no reason a tourist should visit here. Yes, there are a handful of cultural and historic sites, but none that justify the commute.

Garbo’s role may lack persuasion today; but from the odious butcher insulting and taunting the food queues at his shop, refusing meat to women he found unattractive or unwilling, to the scenes of the unlicensed, gluttonous revelry of the nightlife of the speculator and profiteer, and to the ultimate attack by a starving, angry crowd on a café full of merrymakers - the film was a faithful reflection of the times.
