Veteran journalist Kuldip Nayar even went so far as to suggest in his memoirs that Rao ‘sat at a puja when the kar sevaks began pulling down the mosque and rose only when the last stone had been removed’.

On the 27th morning, at around 8 a.m. the train left Godhra Station. The karsevaks were loudly chanting the Ram Dhoon. The train had hardly gone a few meters, when it suddenly stopped. Going out was too difficult, however, myself and Pooja somehow managed to jump out through the windows. Pooja was hurt in her back and was unable to stand up. People outside were trying to hold us to take us away but we could escape and run under the burning train and succeeded in crawling towards the cabin. I have seen my parents and sisters being burnt alive right in front of my eyes.” Luckily, Gayatri was not hurt too badly. “We somehow managed to go up to the station and meet our aunty (Masi). Baru kali ini aku tahu bagaimana caramu memasukkan babi, kuda, gajah, ular, hiu dan monyet itu ke dalam puisimu. Setelah aku temukan bahwa setiap peristiwa selalu membawa kegembiraannya sendiri. Dan apa yang aku alami hari ini hanyalah sebuah bukti dari sekian banyak peristiwa, sebelum aku telanjur lupa untuk memberinya sebuah penafsiran. Monyet-monyet lucu tanpa bedak dan gincu dan juga tanpa perhiasan. Monyet-monyet yang tak lagi malu bertelanjang dada, pamer pantat dan kemaluan mondar-mandir kemana-mana. Mereka bukan representasi Sugriwa, Subali atau mungkin Hanoman. Mereka hanya sebatas monyet biasa. Monyet yang sebagaimana telah lama kita kenal. Namun mereka telah melepaskan diri dari topeng-topeng artificial, dan tampil sederhana apa adanya sebagai dirinya sendiri.
