People who are depressed at the thought that all our motives are selfish are [confused]. They have mixed up ultimate causation (why something evolved by natural selection) with proximate causation (how the entity works here and now). [A] good way to understand the logic of natural selection is to imagine that genes are agents with selfish motives. [T]he genes have metaphorical motives — making copies of themselves — and the organisms they design have real motives. But they are not the same motives. Sometimes the most selfish thing a gene can do is wire unselfish motives into a human brain — heartfelt, unstinting, deep-in-the-marrow unselfishness. The love of children (who carry one's genes into posterity), a faithful spouse (whose genetic fate is identical to one's own), and friends and allies (who trust you if you're trustworthy) can be bottomless and unimpeachable as far as we humans are concerned (proximate level), even if it is metaphorically self-serving as far as the genes are concerned (ultimate level). Combine this with the common misconception that the genes are a kind of essence or core of the person, and you get a mongrel of Dawkins and Freud: the idea that the metaphorical motives of the genes are the deep, unconscious, ulterior motives of the person. That is an error.
Steven Pinker (The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature)
A fire needs three things: a dry bed, fuel, and room to breathe.
Alexis M. Smith (Marrow Island)
My desire in life, is to learn what I have to teach; to suck all the marrow of life, and pass it onto others.
Efrat Cybulkiewicz
Selfishness is the most constant of human motives. Patriotism, humanity, or the love of God may lead to sporadic outbursts which sweep away the heaped-up wrongs of centuries; but they languish at times, while the love of self works on ceaselessly, unwearyingly, burrowing always at the very roots of life, and heaping up fresh wrongs for other centuries to sweep away.
Charles W. Chesnutt (The Marrow of Tradition)
12For we have the living Word of God, which is full of energy,k and it pierces more sharply than a soldier’s sword. It will even penetrate to the very core of our being where soul and spirit, bonel and marrow meet—splitting them in two!m It interprets and reveals the true thoughts and motives of our hearts. 13There is not one person who can hide their thoughts from God, for nothing that we do remains a secret, and nothing created is concealed, but everything is exposed and defenseless before his eyes, to whom we must render an account.n
Brian Simmons (Hebrews and James: Faith Works (The Passion Translation (TPT)))
Day Thirty-Two Because You Love Me Thank You for all the ways You love me! Thank You that You forgive me again and again. Help me to do likewise for others. Thank You that You comfort me in my brokenness, provide for my needs, and bless me in your loving-kindness. In everything You are and in everything You do, You prove that Your love is better than life! Help me to become the example of Your love toward all. Show me how to reflect Your heart perfectly. Open my eyes to see others’ needs and open my heart to fill those as I ought. Give me words for others to comfort them and lead them to You. Scripture for Thought “Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise You. Thus I will bless You while I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name. My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips. When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches. Because You have been my help, therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice.” Psalm 63:3–7 *** Meditate and reflect on all the ways the Lord has loved you. Consider all the ways He is loving you right now. Then, as you reflect on this, let it motivate you to go and do likewise. ***
