Then the issue will not arise. But it's much more convenient to say that poor people here ought to pay the burden under the framework of command economies—totalitarianism. But, if you think it through, it makes sense and almost every social issue you think about—real ones, live ones, ones right on the table—has these properties. We don't have to accept and shouldn't accept the framework of domination of thought and attitude that only allows certain choices to be made... and those choices almost invariably come down to how to put the burden on the poor. That's class warfare. Even by real nice people like us who think it's good to help poor workers, but within a framework of class warfare that maintains privilege and transfers the burden to the poor. It's a matter of raising consciousness among very decent people.

My own concepts in this regard are easy and clear, and I am sure that the word ‘simplistic’ will be used by my critics. These folk are callow and turgid of intellect; I am reassured by their howls and yelps. For present purposes I exclude criminal wealth, the garnering of which needs no elaboration, and a gambler’s wealth which is tinsel. In regard, then, to wealth: Luxury and privilege are the perquisites of wealth. This would appear a notably bland remark, but is much larger than it seems. If one listens closely, he hears deep and far below the mournful chime of inevitability. To achieve wealth, one generally must thoroughly exploit at least three of the following five attributes: Luck. Toil, persistence, courage. Self-denial. Short-range intelligence: cunning, improvisational ability. Long-range intelligence: planning, the perception of trends. These attributes are common; anyone desiring privilege and luxury can gain the precursory wealth by making proper use of his native competence. In some societies poverty is considered a pathetic misfortune, or noble abnegation, hurriedly to be remedied by use of public funds. Other more stalwart societies think of poverty as a measure of the man himself. The critics respond: What an unutterable ass is this fellow Unspiek! In Banaras, Gandhi made four fundamental claims about how Indians should conduct their affairs. First, Gandhi argued in favour of instruction in the mother tongue. He deplored the arrogance of the elite Indian Civil Service (ICS), whose officers saw themselves as members of a ruling caste rather than as servants of the people; Finally, Gandhi asked for a more critical attitude towards religious orthodoxy. The Kashi Vishwanath was the most famous temple in all of Banaras. Why then was it so filthy? If Indians were incapable of maintaining even their places of worship, how then could they justify their claims for self-rule?

On the other side, is a life of hardship which means, less mod-cons, less every day luxuries, maybe less food, sharing of what we do have etc. We can't have both in today's world because man has screwed up what chance we did have. There is no 50/50, 80/20 or even 80/20. We choose one way or the other. One way is that we keep on doing what we are doing and make this world uninhabitable for all of our children. Or we can bite the bullet and start thinking of what we can do for our children and their children. The choice is yours, but what will you say to your children besides, "sorry". It will be hard to choose because we are all greedy for what we have, but what about our children who won't have that choice?

Using family connections to advance one's career is the norm in India, whether it is in politics, industry or entertainment. At the outset of my career, I had noted how Tata had made a name for himself without seeking patronage from his family. I was determined not to use Tata's name to promote my own career. I think he appreciated this attitude. I did, however, seek his help in some public conservation causes, and he readily obliged. In 1980, a small band of us wildlife conservationists in Mysore were protesting the construction of a luxury wildlife lodge that would have disrupted elephant movements in the Kabini river area of Nagarhole. The project was actively promoted by the then chief minister, R. Gundu Rao, who was an acolyte of Indira Gandhi's all-powerful son, Sanjay. When all else failed, I decided to use Tata as a weapon. I wrote up a carefully crafted appeal against the project addressed to Indira Gandhi and convinced Tata to sign it. I then got the writer R.K. Narayan also to sign it. Narayan was genuinely interested in wildlife and had borrowed my tiger books for reference when he wrote his novel A Tiger for Malgudi. Next, I persuaded writer U.R. Anathamurthy to endorse the appeal. Thereafter, I mailed their joint appeal to Tata's friend, H.Y. Sharada Prasad, following this up with a long-distance phone call. This strategy worked: Indira Gandhi ordered Gundu Rao to review the project. Eventually, the Kabini lodge was moved out from the Masthigudi corridor to its present location in Karapura village.
