We crowned ourselves Homo sapiens, the wise ape, but Homo limbus might have been more apt.

There is music in the noise, beauty in the chaos, truth in the lies, light in the void. He who has eyes, let him see.

There are different kinds of predators. There are the kinds who target the weak. And there are those with more of a Dexter vibe who don’t lose sleep if a child abuser has a hard time on the way to the station.

Shooting a pistol while running with any accuracy at all is next to impossible. They train us at the Academy to do it at a walk. Slow yourself down, focus on the target. Be relentless, but be accurate. Nobody ever won a gunfight by missing what they were aiming at.

That’s when I got the first real tingle of warning. Small, but serious. The smart thing to do would have been to simply end the call. No goodbyes, no polite refusals, just hit the button, put the cell phone in the bottom drawer of my file cabinet, and go to the multiplex to watch a movie about things blowing up. Maybe get some Ben and Jerry’s afterward.

But, you see, the water-going dinosaur likes to eat people. It’s envisioned that it might swim through the newly acquired waterways, due to the ice melting and find its way to warmer waters and make its way to our civilization. Then, much like an old Japanese monster movie, start tearing down cities and eating fleeing citizens, stomping pedestrians, and receiving an air strike.

The Poor Souls tell me that they do not go to Heaven, but because they were innocents they do not, of course, go to Purgatory. They go to a place that is in between. One can call it Limbo, but sometimes we call it ‘Children’s Heaven’. The word Limbo comes from LIMBUS that is the space between the print on a page and the edge of the paper itself. The souls of babies there do not know that there is something better. They do not know that they are not in Heaven, and it is our responsibility to lift them up into Heaven. And that, of course, does not take a lot because they never had a chance to sin. We can do that with a ‘Baptism for the Unborn’ or with a Requiem Mass. Stillborn and aborted children should also be given a name and accepted into the family. This enters them into the Book of Life.

The Nepali population that has remained untouched by Hindu caste principles is Nepal's greatest treasure. This is a very sizable proportion of the population. But presently they live in remote areas, at a little above subsistence level, with little or no education, and no opportunities to develop and actualize their aspirations. Their values are not the values of hierarchic Bahunism. They do know the importance of hard work, of endurance, and the role of individual effort in the improvement of ones' circumstances. And they have the positive qualities of strong cooperative behavior and an appreciation of the general well being and importance of the group or community as a whole. The Jyapu in Kathmandu Valley, and the others who are even less affected by Hindu caste hierarchy, such as the Sherpa, Tamang, Magar, and Limbus are untapped resources of the nation. Only when foreign aid can reach these people, in sufficient quantity and of the right kind, will Nepal genuinely be able to establish the basis of her future prosperity.
