you are so strong my dear. you have been through a lot and come out on the winning end. the world has tried to break you, but you never let it. thank your past, for it has made you into a better person today. not everyone you have met is meant to stay around forever.

thank the ones who left, the ones who never came back, the ones who freed you from their undeserving grasp. thank the ones who tried to destroy you, but failed. thank the ones who were unkind. thank the ones who only fed you lies. it’s time to say thank you to the ones who never treated you as you deserved. the ones who weren’t even worth your time, it is them who you need to thank. they are the ones who taught you more than anyone else. they are the ones who made you stronger. braver. kinder. they are the ones who helped create you. thank them from the cracked curves of your heart and the jagged edges of your soul. thank the people who hurt you the most. thank them deeply. thank them gently. thank them boldly. thank them repeatedly. never stop thanking them. -thank you, truly

spend some time with yourself. take yourself on dates. buy yourself coffee and flowers. take yourself on a road trip, blaring your favorite music the entire way. sing in the shower, and dance naked in your bedroom. cook dinner alone. eat alone. sleep alone. learn to truly love yourself. you will find yourself growing in directions you never dreamed possible. your dreams and aspiration will become accomplishments; the world will be placed beautifully at your feet. see, the thing about life is, we must learn to love ourselves before we can even think about loving another. we must be comfortable in our own skin before we crawl into someone else’s.

be proud of everything you have gone through, but mostly, what you’ve become. stop being so hard on yourself. everything will make sense to you one day. all the pain, hurt, and frustration will become worth it. you are perfect in every way, especially with your flaws. acknowledge the things making you different while embracing everything making you unique. even though you think you are broken, there is so much beauty in your pain. also, you’re really not as broken as you think you are. you are stronger than anything that has tried to tear you down. you are a survivor, not a victim. so try not to be so hard on yourself. create a meaningful life for yourself, one you can be proud of. promise me you will make the most of it all. never let anyone get in the way of your goals in life. more importantly, never give up on your passions and your dreams. do not waste your time on people who do not believe in you. only surround yourself with people who encourage and inspire you.

you will never be foreign. i’ve seen too much, gone farther than most. your fingerprints are stamped all over my skin. there is no denying you once trespassed here. your footprints left dirt tracks, and i can’t clean up your mess. even though we will never return to the lovers we once knew, our past will stay a part of us. we could never be strangers. i have not forgotten you, and with that, i hope you still think of me.

we have to leave it all to fate. only it has the power to determine our lives- the power to bring us together again. but even so, i hope you keep me safe in your heart, you consume mine. because maybe when the time is right, we will find our way back to one another. maybe this time, we won’t get it wrong.

oh, sweet girl. i see your heart, the cracks don’t look as deep from here. you feel shattered as if everything has stopped
working. you thought you found the one, yet he’s nowhere to be found. you lost him. or maybe he lost you. either way, he’s gone, while you’re here alone. and now you feel like you’re burning alive, covered from head to toe in flames. you’ve managed to put out his fire, but in the process, you have turned yourself off. you’ve shut down. given up. love don’t have the same ring as it used to. they keep telling you to keep your head up, and to be patient. or that it will happen when you’re least
expecting it. and i hate to say it, but they are right. i know, it’s the last thing you want to hear. and no, it won’t help take this agony away. but for what it’s worth, love is out there… someone is waiting around, looking, hoping, and praying for someone like you. and once you find each other, it will feel like the whole universe stopped just for you two. you will smile, laugh, and cry because turns out they were right. thank goodness, they were actually right.

they ask me how i am, and i do the same. small talk: i’ve never been a fan. the day goes on. and soon enough, i’m on my way home, back to the space we used to share, the place we used to live. it has to all be okay. i cook dinner alone, then eat, alone. and once i’ve cleaned up, i find myself back in our bed. my bed. the tears come without notice, and i find myself slipping back into the ocean of grief, the ocean of you. it has to all be okay. i feel like i’m buried alive, struggling for air, struggling for life. but tomorrow is another day, and every day doesn’t hurt as much. each day, i forget you a little more. i feel you a little less. i love you a little less. it’s all going to be okay. it has to be.

i’m not sure who i am anymore; maybe i never really was. but what i do know is i used to be better than this. kinder, less selfish, more caring, warmer. i think i’ve gotten this all backward. aren’t we supposed to grow with age? aren’t we supposed to be better as each year passes?
