“
When clouds of pain loom in the sky
When a shadow of sadness flickers by
When a tear finds its way to the eye
When fear keeps the loneliness alive
I try and console my heart
Why is it that you cry? I ask
This is only what life imparts
These deep silences within
Have been handed out to all by time
Everyone’s story has a little sorrow
Everyone’s share has a little sunshine
No need for water in your eyes
Every moment can be a new life
Why do you let them pass you by?
Oh heart, why is it that you cry?

Like dreams, poetry talks in symbols. It gives hints. It enters the subconscious mind and connects to a world layered with memories and emotional experiences. Between countries there is a no-man’s-land, and I think the same space exists between the conscious and the subconscious mind. Poetry grows there. And if those who listen to, or who read poetry are receptive, it reaches the no-man’s-land in their minds. There are some conscious reasons why a poem is appreciated, but there are certain reasons that are not so obvious. And you say quite helplessly, ‘Is mein kuchh ajeeb baat hai’—there is some strange charm to it. That charm is because the poem has appealed to the subconscious mind and stirred dormant feelings, thoughts, and memories.

In poetry, each word can trigger an association in the subconscious and in the realm of feelings. Good writers and poets instinctively know what kind of allusions words can evoke. There must also be a balance of sounds. For instance, some light words like ‘ehsaas’ [to feel] and ‘mehsoos’ [to sense] do not have strong consonants. So the lightest breeze can blow the line away. In order to keep the words grounded, light words need strong consonants. They work like paperweights.

Once India achieved its nuclear power status as did Pakistan, Atal felt that it was time that the two countries started working towards good relations. Atal’s counterpart in Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif, also believed that the two countries should foster good relations. Sharif sent an invitation to Atal to visit Pakistan. Pakistan wanted to test the commitment of the new BJP government. Atal responded wholeheartedly and crossed the Attari–Wagah border in Punjab by bus on the afternoon of 19 February 1999. He was accompanied by twenty-two distinguished Indians who included journalists like Kuldeep Nayar, cultural personalities like Mallika Sarabhai and film personalities like Dev Anand and Javed Akhtar. The bus that Atal went by was to become a daily feature from Delhi to Lahore and back. The bus service was to foster better people-to-people contacts, including allowing families that lived on either side of the border to meet each other.
