Get well soon.” Or simply “Thank you, Mom, for teaching me how to make money and feel good about doing it. Merry Christmas.

With this private tradition, there was no need to sit awkwardly at another mother's table with a seven-dollar greeting card, wondering what to do with her hands, what to do with her heart.
