CHEMISTRY. Above all, you need to get along. In an ideal world your cofounder will be someone you have worked with before. You know how they operate, your personalities gel, you can bounce ideas off each other, and you find each other energising. You need to like spending time together – since you’re going to spend a lot of damn time together. And, above all, you need to trust and have faith in each other. You’re not going to succeed if you feel as if you have to micromanage each other, or if you feel as if you’re both motivated by different things. Out of the billion-dollar success stories between 2004 and 2014, 90 per cent of the cofounders had at least a few years working together, or knew each other from school.
