The diameter and length are directly related to the size of your larynx. You control the tension by contracting voluntary muscles that reposition the arytenoid cartilages relative to the thyroid cartilage. When the distance increases, your vocal folds tense and the pitch rises. When the distance decreases, your vocal folds relax and the pitch falls. Children have slender, short vocal folds, so their voices tend to be high pitched. At puberty, the larynx of males enlarges much more than that of females. The vocal cords of an adult male are thicker and longer, so they produce lower tones than those of an adult female. Sound production at the larynx is called phonation (fo.-NA .-shun; phone, voice). Phonation is one part of speech production. Clear speech also requires articulation, the modification of those sounds by voluntary movements of other structures, such as the tongue, teeth, and lips to form words. When we view death as a “case” or an “option,” we reject its necessity as a limit. Death no longer indicates a moment of transcendence that we must encounter. According to Baudrillard, “We are dealing with an attempt to construct an entirely positive world, a perfect world, expurgated of every illusion, of every sort of evil and negativity, exempt from death itself.” In the society of enjoyment, death becomes an increasingly horrific—and at the same time, an increasingly hidden—event. Not only does death imply the cessation of one’s being, but it also indicates a failure of enjoyment. Death is above all a limit to one’s enjoyment: to accept one’s mortality means simultaneously to accept a limit on enjoyment. This is why it is not at all coincidental that with the turn from the prohibition of enjoyment to the command to enjoy we would see an increase in efforts to eliminate the necessity of death. Today, human cell researchers are working toward the day when death will exist only as an “accident,” through the modification of the way in which cells regulate their division and creating cells that can divide limitlessly. As Gregg Easterbrook points out, the introduction of such cells into the human body would not create eternal life, but it would make death something no longer necessary: “Therapeutic use of ‘immortal’ cells would not confer unending life (even people who don’t age could die in accidents, by violence and so on) but might dramatically extend the life-span.” The point isn’t that death would be entirely eliminated, but that we might eliminate its necessary status as a barrier to or a limit on enjoyment. This potential elimination of death as a necessary limit to enjoyment follows directly from the logic of the society of enjoyment. As long as death remains necessary, it stands, as Heidegger recognizes, as a fundamental barrier to the proliferation of enjoyment. If subjects know that they must die, they also know that they lack—and lack becomes intolerable in face of a command to enjoy oneself. But without the idea of a necessary death, every experience of lack loses the quality of necessity. Subjects view lack not as something to be endured for the sake of a future enjoyment, but as an intolerable burden. In the society of enjoyment, subjects refuse to tolerate lack precisely because lack, like death, has now lost its veneer of necessity.

It is possible—in fact it is common—for the mass of new possibilities to wreak havoc with older processes that are both simpler and more vital to our physical health. Thus with our newer powers we are free to nurture ulcers as well as new skills, free to inspire paranoia and schizophrenia as well as rapture, free to become lost in our own labyrinths as well as explore new pathways. We have unleashed the human imagination, to discover that there is no internal force as potent to do us either good or ill.

The implication is that the body’s hard, physical reality can be significantly modified by the more evanescent reality of the mind.8 Evidence supporting this implication can be found in many domains. For example: • Hypnotherapy has been used successfully to treat intractable cases of breast cancer pain, migraine headache, arthritis, hypertension, warts, epilepsy, neurodermatitis, and many other physical conditions.9 People’s expectations about drinking can be more potent predictors of behavior than the pharmacological impact of alcohol.10 If they think they are drinking alcohol and expect to get drunk, they will in fact get drunk even if they drink a placebo. Fighter pilots are treated specially to give them the sense that they truly have the “right stuff.” They receive the best training, the best weapons systems, the best perquisites, and the best aircraft. One consequence is that, unlike other soldiers, they rarely suffer from nervous breakdowns or post-traumatic stress syndrome even after many episodes of deadly combat.11 Studies of how doctors and nurses interact with patients in hospitals indicate that health-care teams may speed death in a patient by simply diagnosing a terminal illness and then letting the patient know.12 People who believe that they are engaged in biofeedback training are more likely to report peak experiences than people who are not led to believe this.13 Different personalities within a given individual can display distinctly different physiological states, including measurable differences in autonomic-nervous-system functioning, visual acuity, spontaneous brain waves, and brainware-evoked potentials.14 While the idea that the mind can affect the physical body is becoming more acceptable, it is also true that the mechanisms underlying this link are still a complete mystery. Besides not understanding the biochemical and neural correlates of “mental intention,” we have almost no idea about the limits of mental influence. In particular, if the mind interacts not only with its own body but also with distant physical systems, as we’ve seen in the previous chapter, then there should be evidence for what we will call “distant mental interactions” with living organisms.

How do we grasp the body, or any part of it, as a thing? As a “body” in the generic sense of a “body out there now”, in the sense that any animal, even the lower ones, would come across it as real in at least somewhat the same way that we do, physicalism is relevant. We can bump into it, trip over it, walk around it, etc. Yet we experience the body as body in another way, in the sense of being touched, being tripped over, etc. We can call this the sense of being a body, or better, of being embodied. Yet this sense has some oddities to it, in that the body that we can observe, say, in a mirror, or from a camera playback, is largely imaginary to the embodied self. When I say imaginary, I don't intend to imply that the person doesn't believe the body doesn't exist and is simply some sort of projection, what I'm trying to get at is that the way, as a self, I am embodied is that body responds to my imaginings so long as they coincide with a slight addition that is difficult to conceptualize. I can imagine getting up and going to the kitchen and it can remain purely imaginary, since in fact I'm still sitting on the sofa. However, with a slight modification that imagining of going to the kitchen can be effected in reality, it can be actualized as a bodily act of the self. I do get up and go to the kitchen, and I can't really say how I get my body to do that except that I imagine it and simultaneously will it, and it happens. From an experiential perspective though what I do as a self-conscious person is not very different between the two, whether I call the difference will, intention, etc., is such a slight difference it is difficult to describe what that specific and rather minimal difference in itself is. A further problem is that while we tend to distinguish “autonomous” neurological processes from conscious processes, there is no clear distinction, since an autonomous process like breathing can in fact be modified consciously, yet although I can to a degree control my breathing, it's difficult again to say precisely how I do so, except that I imagine breathing differently (slower, faster, deeper, etc.) and simultaneously intend to actualize it, and it happens.

The addition of new neurons to handle new operations is only a part of the process of encephalization. The other parts are the gradual modification of ancient reflex patterns, the diversion of neural flow from the older channels, and the creation of new chains of command in the ordering of specific sequences of motor activity. The net result has been that the higher cognitive centers have become increasingly influential, while the older time-worn patterns have become less authoritative, more variable. Conscious mental states have begun to condition the system just as much as the system conditions these higher states of consciousness. But new powers and new subtleties do not appear without new complications, new conflicts. In bodywork we continually feel the muscular results of the intrusion of newer mental faculties into older, more stable response patterns. A good deal of the work is simply reminding minds that they are supported by bodies, bodies that suffer continual contortions under the pressure of compelling ideas and emotions as much as from weight and physical stresses, bodies that can and will in turn choke off consciousness if consciousness does not regard them with sufficient attention and respect. It is possible—in fact it is common—for the mass of new possibilities to wreak havoc with older processes that are both simpler and more vital to our physical health. Thus with our newer powers we are free to nurture ulcers as well as new skills, free to inspire paranoia and schizophrenia as well as rapture, free to become lost in our own labyrinths as well as explore new pathways. We have unleashed the human imagination, to discover that there is no internal force as potent to do us either good or ill. With the addition of these new cortical faculties, the quality of our muscular responses—from digestion, to posture, to locomotion, to expressive gesture, to chronic constriction—is dependent not only upon stimulations from the environment, and not only upon patterns characteristic of the species, but also upon individual experiences, memories, unique associations, personal emotions, expectations, apprehensions, the entire legion of personal psychological states.

The genetic mechanisms that were described here are a collection of exotic mutations: new cis-regulatory elements from transposable elements; novel transcription factor functions; and new miRNAs. It seems that rewiring a gene regulatory network, as required for the evolution a morphological novelty, uses a quite different set of mechanisms than usually associated with adaptive changes that is, changes in enzyme activity and gene expression due to small changes in cis-regulatory elements. This distinction hints at the possibility that the difference between adaptation and innovation is not only conceptual, but that the conceptual difference might be mirrored by a difference in the molecular mechanisms. It is far from clear whether this distinction will hold up, because there are still only a limited number of cases of innovations that are understood at the molecular level. However, one should at not prematurely dismiss this possibility. The possibility of a mechanistic difference beween adaptation and innovation is also interesting because the characteristics of the genetic mechanisms may explain the phenomenology of innovations; innovations tend to be rare and episodic and result in a phenotype that tends to be canalized in its major features. As discussed above, one of the main characteristics of mutations by transposable elements is that they are episodic and specific to certain lineages. Mutations caused by transposable elements are most prevalent after the infection of a genome by a new retrovirus or any other new transposable elements. Similarly, gene duplications also temporarily open a window of evolvability by releasing constraints on gene evolution, and the maintenance of duplicated genes is often associated with body plan innovations. There is also a tendency for maintaining novel genetic elements with the origin of morphological novelties: new genes, new cis-regulatory elements, new miRNAs, and probably many others. Transcription factor protein evolution is likely necessary for the evolution of novel functional specificities, and miRNAs are involved in canalizing phenotypes once they have arisen. Hence, the conceptual uniqueness of innovations (i.e., the origination of novel cell type or of a quasi-independent body part) as compared to adaptation (i.e. the modification of existing body parts and physiological processes) may require a set of mutational mechanisms that can radically rewire gene regulatory networks and stabilize/canalize the phenotypic product of these changes. If further research supports this idea, then the conceptual distinction between adaptation and innovation will be linked to and grounded in the distinctness of the underlying molecular mechanisms.
