Let me note, finally, that most of the research for this book was done in the libraries of Harvard University, the size of whose holdings is matched only by the school's determination to restrict access to them. I am delighted to have been able to use these resources, and it hardly matters that I was afforded this privilege only because the school thought I was someone else.

This is why the Liberian waiter laughed at me. He thought that I thought a toilet was my right, when he knew it was a privilege.
"It must be, when 2.6 billion people don't have sanitation. I don't mean that they have no toilet in their house and must use a public one with queues and fees. Or that they have an outhouse, or a ricety shack that empties into a filthy drain or pigsty. All that counts as sanitation, though not a safe variety. The people who have those are the fortunate ones. Four in ten people have no access to any latrine, toilet, bucket, or box. Nothing. Instead, they defecate by train tracks and in forests. They do it in plastic bags and fling them through the air in narrow slum alleyways. If they are women, they get up at 4 A.M. to be able to do their business under cover of darkness for reasons of modesty, risking rape and snakebites. Four in ten people live in situations where they are surrounded by human excrement because it is in the bushes outside the village or in their city yards, left by children outside the backdoor. It is tramped back in on their feet, carried on fingers onto clothes, food and drinking water.
"The disease toll of this is stunning. A gram of feces can contain 10 million viruses, 1 million bacteria, 1,000 parasite cysts, and 100 worm eggs...

these glaring disparities, about how those with the most access within the movement set the agenda, contribute to the skewed media portrait, and overwhelmingly fail at funneling resources to those most marginalized. My awakening pushed me to be more vocal about these issues, prompting uncomfortable but necessary conversations about the movement privileging middle- and upper-class cis gay and lesbian rights over the daily access issues plaguing low-income queer and trans youth and LGBT people of color, communities that carry interlocking identities that are not mutually exclusive, that make them all the more vulnerable to poverty, homelessness, unemployment, HIV/AIDs, hyper-criminalization, violence, and so much more.

Luxury beliefs’ are the latest status symbol for rich Americans” by Rob Henderson
New York Post, August 3, 2022
In the past, upper-class Americans used to display their social status with luxury goods. Today, they do it with luxury beliefs.
People care a lot about social status. In fact, research indicates that respect and admiration from our peers are even more important than money for our sense of well-being.
...as trendy clothes and other products become more accessible and affordable, there is increasingly less status attached to luxury goods.
The upper classes have found a clever solution to this problem: luxury beliefs. These are ideas and opinions that confer status on the rich at very little cost, while taking a toll on the lower class.
‘Upper-class people don a luxury belief to separate themselves from the lower class’ ...
White privilege is the luxury belief that took me the longest to understand, because I grew up around poor whites. Often members of the upper-class claim that racial disparities stem from inherent advantages held by whites. Yet Asian Americans are more educated, have higher earnings and live longer than whites. Affluent whites are the most enthusiastic about the idea of white privilege, yet they are the least likely to incur any costs for promoting that belief. Rather, they raise their social standing by talking about their privilege.
In other words, upper-class whites gain status by talking about their high status. When laws are enacted to combat white privilege, it won’t be the privileged whites who are harmed. Poor whites will bear the brunt.
... like with diamond rings or designer clothes of old, upper-class people don a luxury belief to separate themselves from the lower class. These beliefs, in turn, produce real, tangible consequences for disadvantaged people, further widening the divide.

The privilege that I'd experienced for most of my life had not only oriented me to see access and convenience as normal, but it completely invisibilized the experience that one in five Americans have when they're confronted by a system that is designed to ignore and exclude them. Disability is not located in the individual's body and mind but in the world. It is a construct: a product of a toxic culture that defines normal in the form of beauty, performance, productivity and obedience.

The first movements of the fetus produce this sense of the splitting subject; the fetus's movements are wholly mine, completely within me, condition my experience and space. Only I have access to these movements from their origin, as it were. For months only I can witness this life within me, and it is only under my direction of where to put their hands that others can feel these movements. I have a privileged relation to this other life, not unlike that which I have to my dreams and thoughts, which I can tell someone but which cannot be an object for both of us in the same way... Pregnancy challenges the integration of my body experience by rendering fluid the boundary between what is within, myself, and what is outside, separate. I experience my insides as the space of another, yet my own body.

Images of people in the Middle East dressing like Westerners, spending like Westerners, that is what the voters watching TV here at home want to see. That is a visible sign that we really are winning the war of ideas—the struggle between consumption and economic growth, and religious tradition and economic stagnation.
I thought, why are those children coming onto the streets more and more often? It’s not anything we have done, is it? It’s not any speeches we have made, or countries we have invaded, or new constitutions we have written, or sweets we have handed out to children, or football matches between soldiers and the locals. It’s because they, too, watch TV.
They watch TV and see how we live here in the West.
They see children their own age driving sports cars. They see teenagers like them, instead of living in monastic frustration until someone arranges their marriages, going out with lots of different girls, or boys. They see them in bed with lots of different girls and boys. They watch them in noisy bars, bottles of lager upended over their mouths, getting happy, enjoying the privilege of getting drunk. They watch them roaring out support or abuse at football matches. They see them getting on and off planes, flying from here to there without restriction and without fear, going on endless holidays, shopping, lying in the sun. Especially, they see them shopping: buying clothes and PlayStations, buying iPods, video phones, laptops, watches, digital cameras, shoes, trainers, baseball caps. Spending money, of which there is always an unlimited supply, in bars and restaurants, hotels and cinemas. These children of the West are always spending. They are always restless, happy and with unlimited access to cash.
I realised, with a flash of insight, that this was what was bringing these Middle Eastern children out on the streets. I realised that they just wanted to be like us. Those children don’t want to have to go to the mosque five times a day when they could be hanging out with their friends by a bus shelter, by a phone booth or in a bar. They don’t want their families to tell them who they can and can’t marry. They might very well not want to marry at all and just have a series of partners. I mean, that’s what a lot of people do. It is no secret, after that serial in the Daily Mail, that that is what I do. I don’t necessarily need the commitment. Why should they not have the same choices as me? They want the freedom to fly off for their holidays on easy Jet. I know some will say that what a lot of them want is just one square meal a day or the chance of a drink of clean water, but on the whole the poor aren’t the ones on the street and would not be my target audience. They aren’t going to change anything, otherwise why are they so poor? The ones who come out on the streets are the ones who have TVs. They’ve seen how we live, and they want to spend.

I was lucky to receive it. Most rogue interns never get a second chance. And here it’s worth mentioning that I benefited from what was known in 2009 as being fortunate, and is now more commonly called privilege. It’s not like I flashed an Ivy League gang sign and was handed a career. If I had stood on a street corner yelling, “I’m white and male, and the world owes me something!” it’s unlikely doors would have opened. What I did receive, however, was a string of conveniences, do-overs, and encouragements. My parents could help me pay rent for a few months out of school. I went to a university lousy with successful D.C. alumni. No less significantly, I avoided the barriers that would have loomed had I belonged to a different gender or race. Put another way, I had access to a network whether I was bullshit or not. A friend’s older brother worked as a speechwriter for John Kerry. When my Crisis Hut term expired, he helped me find an internship at West Wing Writers, a firm founded by former speechwriters for Bill Clinton and Al Gore. In the summer of 2009, my new bosses upgraded me to full-time employee. Without meaning to, I had stumbled upon the chance to learn a skill. The firm’s partners were four of the best writers in Washington, and each taught me something different. Vinca LaFleur helped me understand the benefits of subtle but well-timed alliteration. Paul Orzulak showed me how to coax speakers into revealing the main idea they hope to express. From Jeff Shesol, I learned that while speechwriting is as much art as craft, and no two sets of remarks are alike, there’s a reason most speechwriters punctuate long, flowy sentences with short, punchy ones. It works.

Well before the end of the 20th century however print had lost its former dominance. This resulted in, among other things, a different kind of person getting elected as leader. One who can present himself and his programs in a polished way, as Lee Quan Yu you observed in 2000, adding, “Satellite television has allowed me to follow the American presidential campaign. I am amazed at the way media professionals can give a candidate a new image and transform him, at least superficially, into a different personality. Winning an election becomes, in large measure, a contest in packaging and advertising. Just as the benefits of the printed era were inextricable from its costs, so it is with the visual age. With screens in every home entertainment is omnipresent and boredom a rarity. More substantively, injustice visualized is more visceral than injustice described. Television played a crucial role in the American Civil rights movement, yet the costs of television are substantial, privileging emotional display over self-command, changing the kinds of people and arguments that are taken seriously in public life. The shift from print to visual culture continues with the contemporary entrenchment of the Internet and social media, which bring with them four biases that make it more difficult for leaders to develop their capabilities than in the age of print. These are immediacy, intensity, polarity, and conformity. Although the Internet makes news and data more immediately accessible than ever, this surfeit of information has hardly made us individually more knowledgeable, let alone wiser, as the cost of accessing information becomes negligible, as with the Internet, the incentives to remember it seem to weaken. While forgetting anyone fact may not matter, the systematic failure to internalize information brings about a change in perception, and a weakening of analytical ability. Facts are rarely self-explanatory; their significance and interpretation depend on context and relevance. For information to be transmuted into something approaching wisdom it must be placed within a broader context of history and experience. As a general rule, images speak at a more emotional register of intensity than do words. Television and social media rely on images that inflamed the passions, threatening to overwhelm leadership with the combination of personal and mass emotion. Social media, in particular, have encouraged users to become image conscious spin doctors. All this engenders a more populist politics that celebrates utterances perceived to be authentic over the polished sound bites of the television era, not to mention the more analytical output of print. The architects of the Internet thought of their invention as an ingenious means of connecting the world. In reality, it has also yielded a new way to divide humanity into warring tribes. Polarity and conformity rely upon, and reinforce, each other. One is shunted into a group, and then the group polices once thinking. Small wonder that on many contemporary social media platforms, users are divided into followers and influencers. There are no leaders. What are the consequences for leadership? In our present circumstances, Lee's gloomy assessment of visual media's effects is relevant. From such a process, I doubt if a Churchill or Roosevelt or a de Gaulle can emerge. It is not that changes in communications technology have made inspired leadership and deep thinking about world order impossible, but that in an age dominated by television and the Internet, thoughtful leaders must struggle against the tide.

I believe that if, like me, you have privilege and are equipped with the resources and knowledge to have these conversations, it is your job to educate those who have no idea how to navigate this information, define these resources, and to challenge their own preconceived ideas. It is not solely the responsibility of marginalised people to advocate for their own rights, to explain their own oppression, or to hold hands with the very people undermining them. This is a reminder that each and every one of us has arrived at our current worldview because of people who took the time to explain things, who performed labour to educate us. We need to pay that forward, not sit on high horses. I know I am the product of the people closest to me, and that our debates and occasional conflicts are at the crux of my self-development, reflection, and empowerment.
It isn’t your job to engage in harmful conversations with those committed to misunderstanding you but it isn’t helpful to demonise people whose views do not mirror your own or whose progress is slower. It isn’t effective to shut down and to turn your back on those with other worldviews once you believe you know better. We shouldn’t pull the ladder up behind us when we decided we’re in the right place. We shouldn’t be shutting up shop. This is the ultimate opportunity to use what we have learned to ensure marginalised people do not have to have these conversations. We don’t need to speak on behalf of anyone but we can direct people to resources, we can push back on problematic language and views, and we can use our knowledge and privilege for change-making. If you hold the privileges that I do, a White woman claiming to be a feminist, your fear is not enough of a barrier. I know that is a confronting statement but it is something we must interrogate. It is vital to note that there are many circumstances where breaking your silence, challenging the status quo, and speaking out pose a threat. I want to be clear that this is not a call to subject yourself to devastating outcomes, or dangerous conversations, or situations that pose a threat to your safety or security. But if the only thing standing between you and change is fear of causing your friends discomfort, or lowering the mood by calling out something that may be considered taboo, you must walk through that fear. History depends on it. Change is contingent on your voice. If you want to identify as a feminist. If you want to claim this space and that you are #doingthework, this is exactly what that work looks like. Having difficult conversations, being brave, and challenging widely held assumptions. Turning up to the protest. Putting your money toward causes you claim to stand for. Buying the book and using what you’ve learned to ensure this work does not remain the sole responsibility of the impacted, marginalised communities, but becomes something that those without lied experiences understand and advocate for. Doing all this, is more than half the battle.
The next time you bookend a conversation with “it is not my job to educate you”, I think it is really important to remember that, actually, it kind of is. Your privilege means you have access to people and influence over them. You are considered by society to be more palatable in your anger, and your advocacy, and people are more willing to hear you speak to difficult topics. It is your job to educate yourself, and to use that inherent privilege to educate others, or to at least have a go. It is your job, as the feminist you claim to be, to act as a barricade for people experiencing compounding marginalisations. It is your job to educate yourself and others. It is as simple as that.

Going back to the place where you are from is always fraught, memories scattered like broken glass on every pavement, be careful where you tread. I meditated, feeling a little guilty that I have the space to. A space for peace, to which everyone is entitled. “It’s alright for you in the back of a car that Hitler used to ride in,” I imagined that drunk bloke saying. I’d have to point out that it wasn’t literally Hitler’s car, that would be a spooky heirloom, but it is all right for me. I do have a life where I can make time to meditate, eat well, do yoga, exercise, reflect, relax. That’s what money buys you. Is it possible for everyone to have that life? Is it possible for anyone to be happy when such rudimentary things are exclusive? They tell you that you ought eat five fruit and veg a day, then seven; I read somewhere once that you should eat as much as ten, face in a trough all day long, chowing on kale. The way these conclusions are reached is that scientists look at a huge batch of data and observe the correlation between the consumption of fruit and veg and longevity. They then conclude that you, as an individual, should eat more fruit and veg. The onus is on you; you are responsible for what you eat. Of course, other conclusions could be drawn from this data. The same people that live these long lives and eat all this fruit and veg are also, in the main, wealthy; they have good jobs, regular holidays, exercise, and avoid the incessant stress of poverty. Another, more truthful, more frightening conclusion we could reach then is that we should have a society where the resources enjoyed by the fruit-gobbling elite are shared around and the privileges, including the fruit and veg, enjoyed by everybody. With this conclusion the obligation is not on you as an individual to obediently skip down to Waitrose and buy more celery, it is on you as a member of society to fight for a fairer system where more people have access to resources.

Punishment is not care, and poverty is not a crime. We need to create safe, supportive pathways for reentry into the community for all people and especially young people who are left out and act out. Interventions like decriminalizing youthful indiscretions for juvenile offenders and providing foster children and their families with targeted services and support would require significant investment and deliberate collaboration at the community, state, and federal levels, as well as a concerted commitment to dismantling our carceral state. These interventions happen automatically and privately for young offenders who are not poor, whose families can access treatment and hire help, and who have the privilege of living and making mistakes in neighborhoods that are not over-policed. We need to provide, not punish, and to foster belonging and self-sufficiency for our neighbors’ kids. More, funded YMCAs and community centers and summer jobs, for example, would help do this. These kinds of interventions would benefit all the Carloses, Wesleys, Haydens, Franks, and Leons, and would benefit our collective well-being. Only if we consider ourselves bound together can we reimagine our obligation to each other as community. When we consider ourselves bound together in community, the radically civil act of redistributing resources from tables with more to tables with less is not charity, it is responsibility; it is the beginning of reparation. Here is where I tell you that we can change this story, now. If we seek to repair systemic inequalities, we cannot do it with hope and prayers; we have to build beyond the systems and begin not with rehabilitation but prevention. We must reimagine our communities, redistribute our wealth, and give our neighbors access to what they need to live healthy, sustainable lives, too. This means more generous social benefits. This means access to affordable housing, well-resourced public schools, affordable healthcare, jobs, and a higher minimum wage, and, of course, plenty of good food. People ask me what educational policy reform I would suggest investing time and money in, if I had to pick only one. I am tempted to talk about curriculum and literacy, or teacher preparation and salary, to challenge whether police belong in schools, to push back on standardized testing, or maybe debate vocational education and reiterate that educational policy is housing policy and that we cannot consider one without the other. Instead, as a place to start, I say free breakfast and lunch. A singular reform that would benefit all students is the provision of good, free food at school. (Data show that this practice yields positive results; but do we need data to know this?) Imagine what would happen if, across our communities, people had enough to feel fed.

Life was good, and none of it would have happened without Andrew. Without him, I would never have mastered the world of music piracy and lived a life of endless McDonald's. What he did, on a small scale, showed me how important it is to empower the dispossessed and the disenfranchised in the wake of oppression. Andrew was white. His family had access to education, resources, computers. For generations, while his people were preparing to go to university, my people were crowded into thatched huts singing, "Two times to is four. Three times two is six. La la la la la." My family had been denied the things his family had taken for granted. I had a natural talent for selling to people, but without knowledge and resources, where was that going to get me? People always lecture the poor: "Take responsibility for yourself! Make something of yourself!" But with what raw materials are the poor to make something of themselves?
People love to say, "Give a man a fish, and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he'll eat for a lifetime." What they don't say is, "And it would be nice if you give him a fishing rod." That's the part of the analogy that's missing. Working with Andrew was the first time in my life I realized you need someone from the privileged world to come to you and say, "Okay, here's what you need, and here's how it works." Talent alone would have gotten me nowhere without Andrew giving me the CD writer. People say, "Oh, that's a handout." No. I still have to work to profit by it. But I don't stand a chance without it.

They came to see that this is what prayer is for. In the words of John Piper, prayer is a “walkie-talkie…for the accomplishment of a wartime mission.” He writes: It is as though the field commander (Jesus) called in the troops, gave them a crucial mission (go and bear fruit), handed each of them a personal transmitter coded to the frequency of the general’s headquarters, and said, “Comrades, the general has a mission for you. He aims to see it accomplished. And to that end he has authorized me to give each of you personal access to him through these transmitters. If you stay true to his mission and seek his victory first, he will always be as close as your transmitter, to give tactical advice and to send air cover when you need it. Then Piper describes how millions of Christians have missed God’s purpose for this walkie-talkie, choosing to “rig it up as an intercom in our houses and cabins and boats and cars—not to call in firepower for conflict with a mortal enemy but to ask for more comforts in the den.”[4] We are wasting the privilege of prayer if we’re not using it for God’s purpose: the spread of his glory among all the nations.

Never have I seen so many young, privileged, people trying so hard to be happy. There are countless articles written about it, blogs named for it, workshops attending to it. Who ever said we’re supposed to be happy all the time, anyway? We’re not. And the pressure to do so might be what’s making us unhappy to begin with. It’s OK if you’re not completely content with your life twenty-four hours a day. Can you imagine what a boring person you’d be if you were? Going through shit storms, feeling uninspired, hating the way you look and having guilt over not accomplishing enough are just some of the things that make you interesting, relatable and human. Not to mention, if you’re reading this, then you have internet access and if you have internet access, it stands to reason that you have a computer, which makes me think you probably have a place to live, with electricity and plenty of food to eat and clean clothes to wear, which are all things that an enormous amount of people living on the planet today do not have. This is not to say that people shouldn’t strive to better their positions in life, however it seems like so many of us are no longer content with a regular amount of happy, yet dead-set on being maniacally jubilant, all of the time.

A good example of ill-conceived (and premature) training approaches is seen in the many calls I get to conduct training programs to help people become better managers. I put my callers through a standard set of questions:
•Did you choose people for managerial roles because they were the type of people who could get their fulfillment and satisfaction out of helping other people shine rather than having the ego-need to shine themselves? (No!)
•Did you select them because they had a prior history of being able to give a critique to someone in such a way that the other person responds: "Wow, that was really helpful, I'm glad you helped me see all that." (No!)
•Do you reward these people for how well their group has done, or do you reward them for their own personal accomplishments in generating business and serving clients? (Both, but with an emphasis on their personal numbers!)
People can detect immediately a lack of alignment between what they are being trained in and how they are being managed. When they do detect it, little of what has been discussed or "trained" ever gets implemented.
"So, let's summarize;' I say. "You've chosen people who don't want to do the job, who haven't demonstrated any prior aptitude
for the job, and you are rewarding them for things other than doing the job?"
Thanks, but I'll pass on the wonderful privilege of training them!
Here's a good test for the timing of training: If the training was entirely optional and elective, and only available in a remote village accessible only by a mule, but your people still came to the training because they were saying to themselves, "I have got to learn this-it's going to be critical for my future; then, and only then, you will know you have timed your training well. Anything less than that, and you are doing the training too soon.

I would like for us to dwell on the notion of “dictators killing their own people,” which is quite problematic and misleading.
First, the notion presumes that killing one’s own people is only done by directly using weapons and prisons, as commonly cited when referring to Arab dictators, but it overlooks the many other indirect ways through which a state can kill its own people, like denying them decent, livable wages; healthy, chemical-free, non-cancerous foods; access to decent basic healthcare and good education; and many other basic human rights that are a privilege not a right in the US. Never mind that the US doesn’t even come close in providing these basic needs whose lack can easily make any state responsible for “killing its own people”, I am not disclosing a secret when I say that the US equally fails in the test of not directly killing its own people through imprisoning and shooting blacks, immigrants, and Muslims.
The second serious problem with the statement of dictators “killing their own people” is the failure of many so-called academics and intellectuals who contribute to knowledge production in interrogating it in an honest manner, which, to me means that the starting point is always to look at how the US kills its own people. Once that is determined and confirmed, it would be hard to make the case that the US is in a position to go around the world hunting other authoritarian regimes who do kill their own people. This fact makes many academics and intellectuals—unless willing to pay a high price for speaking the truth—complicit with the agendas of the warmongers who have been exterminating the people of the Middle East for many decades now. As a result, one can’t help wondering whether the real job of many feeble and co-opted intellectuals and academics in America is to simply aid the establishment in promoting itself as a “free democracy”, and consequently aiding it with its false mission of “democratizing” other nations.

The narrative that BIPOC are inferior and helpless without white intervention is present in white supremacist consciousness whether a person with white privilege flies to Africa or stays in their home country. White saviorism at home can show up as teachers with white privilege wanting to rescue their students who are children of color. It can show up as individuals and businesses hosting fund-raisers and nonprofit projects to rescue BIPOC struggling against issues of lack of access and discrimination. And it can even show up as parents with white privilege wanting to adopt children of color (though this is obviously not always the case, it is something to be aware of). In more subtle ways, white saviorism is the person with white privilege speaking over or for BIPOC in the belief that they know better how to say what needs to be said.

“ ‘Luxury beliefs’ are the latest status symbol for rich Americans” by Rob Henderson
One example of luxury belief is that all family structures are equal. This is not true. Evidence is clear that families with two married parents are the most beneficial for young children. And yet, affluent, educated people raised by two married parents are more likely than others to believe monogamy is outdated, marriage is a sham or that all families are the same. …
Another luxury belief is that religion is irrational or harmful. Members of the upper class are most likely to be atheists or non-religious. But they have the resources and access to thrive without the unifying social edifice of religion.
Places of worship are often essential for the social fabric of poor communities. Denigrating the importance of religion harms the poor. While affluent people often find meaning in their work, most Americans do not have the luxury of a “profession.” They have jobs. They clock in, they clock out. Without a family or community to care for, such a job can feel meaningless.
Then there’s the luxury belief that individual decisions don’t matter much compared to random social forces, including luck. This belief is more common among many of my peers at Yale and Cambridge than the kids I grew up with in foster care or the women and men I served with in the military. The key message is that the outcomes of your life are beyond your control. This idea works to the benefit of the upper class and harms ordinary people. …
… When laws are enacted to combat white privilege, it won’t be the privileged whites who are harmed. Poor whites will bear the brunt. …
In the future, expect the upper class to defame even more values — including ones they hold dear — in their quest to gain top-dog status.

This luxury belief contributed to the erosion of the family. Today, the marriage rates of affluent Americans are nearly the same as they were in the 1960s. But working-class people are far less likely to get married. Furthermore, out-of-wedlock birthrates are more than 10 times higher than they were in 1960, mostly among the poor and working class. Affluent people seldom have kids out of wedlock but are more likely than others to express the luxury belief that doing so is of no consequence.
… When laws are enacted to combat white privilege, it won’t be the privileged whites who are harmed. Poor whites will bear the brunt. …

There had to be something near racial parity in the early stages because setting up the infernal machine required at least as many Europeans as Africans.
Consequently, the original contact language had to be not too far from the language of the slave owners. Because at this stage Europeans were teaching Africans what they had to do, the contact language had to be intelligible to native speakers of the European language. Because so many interactions were between Europeans and Africans, the latter would have much better access to that European language than at any later stage in plantation history. We should remember that Africans, unlike modern Americans, do not regard monolingualism as a natural state, but expect to have to use several languages in the course of their lives. (In Ghana, our house-boy, Attinga, spoke six languages-two European, four African-and this was nothing out of the ordinary.)
But as soon as the infrastructure was in place, the slave population of sugar colonies had to be increased both massively and very rapidly. If not, the plantation owners, who had invested significant amounts of capital, would have gone bankrupt and the economies of those colonies would have collapsed.
When the slave population ballooned in this way, new hands heavily outnumbered old hands. No longer did Europeans instruct Africans; now it was the older hands among the Africans instructing the new ones, and the vast majority of interactions were no longer European to African, the were African to African. Since this was the case, there was no longer any need for the contact language to remain mutually intelligible with the European language. Africans in positions of authority could become bilingual, using one language with Europeans, another with fellow Africans. The code-switching I found in Guyana, which I had assumed was a relatively recent development, had been there, like most other things, from the very beginning.
In any case, Africans in authority could not have gone on using the original contact language even if they'd wanted to. As we saw, it would have been as opaque to the new arrivals as undiluted French or English. The old hands had to use a primitive pidgin to communicate with the new hands. And, needless to add, the new hands had to use a primitive pidgin to communicate with one another.
Since new hands now constituted a large majority of the total population, the primitive pidgin soon became the lingua franca of that population. A minority of relatively privileged slaves (house slaves and artisans) may have kept the original contact language alive among themselves, thus giving rise to the intermediate varieties in the continuum that confronted me when I first arrived in Guyana. (For reasons still unknown, this process seems to have happened more often in English than in French colonies.) But it was the primitive, unstructured pidgin that formed the input to the children of the expansion phase.
Therefore it was the children of the expansion phase-not the relatively few children of the establishment phase, the first locally born generation, as I had originally thought-who were the creators of the Creole. They were the ones who encountered the pidgin in its most basic and rudimentary form, and consequently they were the ones who had to draw most heavily on the inborn knowledge of language that formed as much a part of their biological heritage as wisdom teeth or prehensile hands.

There's something above even the pinnacle of the highest of dominance hierarchies, access to which should not be sacrificed for mere proximal success. It's a real place, too, although not to be conceptualized in the standard geographical sense of place we typically use to orient ourselves. I had a vision, once, of an immense landscape, spread for miles out to the horizon before me. I was high in the air, granted a bird's-eye view. Everywhere I could see great stratified multi-storied pyramids of glass, some small, some large, some overlapping, some separate—all akin to modern skyscrapers; all full of people striving to reach each pyramid's very pinnacle. But there was something above that pinnacle, a domain outside each pyramid, in which all were nested. That was the privileged position of the eye that could or perhaps chose to soar freely above the fray; that chose not to dominate any specific group or cause but instead to somehow simultaneously transcend all watchful attention, waiting to act when the time was right and the place had been established.

Introduction
An .edu email address unlocks a lot: student discounts, access to educational tools and software, campus services, and easier communication with professors and peers. But not all .edu addresses are created equal — and obtaining one legitimately matters. This guide explains legal ways to get a .edu email, the real benefits, safe alternatives if you’re not eligible, and best practices for security and verification.
Why an .edu email matters
An .edu email signals affiliation with a US-accredited educational institution. That trust opens doors:
Major student discounts on software, hardware, streaming, and subscriptions.
Access to academic software (MATLAB, GitHub Student Developer Pack, Microsoft Office 365 Education).
Communication with professors and campus services (financial aid, library resources, course lists).
Verification for student-focused offers and research programs.

1. Enroll in an accredited school or college
Most colleges issue .edu emails to current students at matriculation. Enroll in a degree program (full-time, part-time, or online) to receive official credentials and an institutional email.
2. Take community college or extension courses
Many community colleges and continuing education programs provide .edu email addresses to enrolled students, even for single-course enrollment. This can be an affordable path to student benefits.
3. Use alumni or staff accounts if eligible
Graduates of many institutions retain alumni email privileges. If you’re an alum, check your school’s IT or alumni office for access policies.
4. Dual enrollment (high school students)
High school students enrolled in dual-enrollment or concurrent-college courses often receive a college email address while the program is active.
5. Student verification services (legitimate)
If an organization needs proof you’re a student, use reputable verification services (e.g., UNiDAYS, Student Beans, ID.me where available) that don’t require sharing or purchasing unauthorized accounts.

The temptation to shortcut account provisioning by purchasing “verified” Microsoft Outlook accounts is understandable: speed, anonymity, scale. But beneath the surface lies a lattice of legal risk, operational fragility, and cybersecurity exposure. Rather than pursuing precarious secondary markets, the best approach is to obtain verified Outlook mailboxes through legitimate Microsoft channels, enterprise resellers, or by provisioning within your own tenant. This ensures provenance, compliance, and long-term resilience.
Why the marketplace for purchased accounts is dangerous
The clandestine market for pre-verified accounts is rife with problems:
Provenance is opaque. Many accounts are created using fraudulent identity details or harvested from compromised users. The account’s provenance — where it came from, how it was verified, who controls it — is often unknowable.
Legal and contractual exposure. Using accounts bought outside of Microsoft’s provisioning channels can breach Microsoft’s Terms of Service and local regulations (data protection, anti-fraud laws), exposing both individuals and organizations to liability.
Security debt and operational risk. Bought accounts commonly lack proper admin controls, audit trails, or recovery options. If the seller revokes access, or if the account is reclaimed by Microsoft or its legitimate owner, you lose access and may face further escalation.
Reputational harm and deliverability issues. Email sent from such accounts can be flagged as suspicious by recipients, spam filters, or anti-abuse systems, harming deliverability and trust.
Legal, scalable alternatives that provide equivalent outcomes
If the goal is to have verified, professional Outlook mailboxes for business or online operations, here are legitimate pathways that deliver authenticity and security.
1. Purchase Microsoft 365 licenses via authorized channels
The canonical, low-risk method is to buy Microsoft 365 (Exchange Online) subscriptions from Microsoft or an authorized reseller (Cloud Solution Provider — CSP). Benefits:
Account creation within your own tenant with full administrative control.
Access to verification features (domain verification, DKIM, SPF) that improve deliverability.
Legal licensing and support with SLAs.
For organisations requiring bulk mailboxes, CSPs and Microsoft’s volume licensing options offer centralized billing, delegated administration, and migration assistance.
2. Use a trusted Microsoft partner or reseller
Certified Microsoft partners specialize in onboarding, verification, and identity proofing for enterprises:
They can help configure Azure Active Directory, conditional access, and identity protection.
Partners provide professional services, migrations from legacy providers, and ongoing security operations.
Contracts and service-level agreements mitigate risk and create clear remediation channels when issues arise.
3. Provision mailboxes in your own Microsoft 365 tenant
Organizations that control their own tenant retain the strongest provenance:
Create user accounts tied to corporate domains (e.g., user@yourdomain.com), verify the domain in DNS, and enable exchange mailboxes.
Implement identity governance (Azure AD roles, privileged identity management) and lifecycle management to automate onboarding/offboarding.
This approach is auditable, compliant, and defensible.
4. Enterprise identity federation and B2B collaboration
For cross-organizational access without buying third-party accounts:
Use Azure AD B2B to invite external users into your tenant with controlled access to resources and mail routing where needed.

Why Are Verified PayPal Accounts in High Demand for Digital Marketers?
The Hidden Currency of Trust in a Digital Marketplace
In the ever-evolving terrain of online commerce, one quiet truth persists: trust is the coin of the realm. Among digital marketers, this trust manifests in infrastructure — landing pages that convert, traffic sources that perform, payment systems that deliver. Within that infrastructure, PayPal occupies a crucial node. It is not just a payment gateway; it is a brand synonym with credibility, buyer protection, and instantaneous financial movement.

In this context, the question “Why Are Verified PayPal Accounts in High Demand for Digital Marketers Securely Buy Verified” emerges not as a speculative inquiry but as a commercial reality. Across forums, private marketplaces, and encrypted chat groups, the demand for verified PayPal accounts is surging — and the reasons behind it are neither trivial nor entirely legitimate.
This report dissects the motivations, mechanisms, and moral hazards surrounding the pursuit of verified PayPal accounts by digital marketers, offering a panoramic analysis rooted in real-world operations.
Section I: Anatomy of a Verified PayPal Account
What Makes a PayPal Account "Verified"?
A verified PayPal account is one that has passed through PayPal's multi-stage identification process. This process may include:
Confirmed email address
Linked and confirmed bank account
Linked and verified credit or debit card
Submitted and approved identification documents
Business incorporation papers (for business accounts)
Verification bestows credibility — both with PayPal's internal fraud prevention algorithms and with users interacting with the account. But for digital marketers, the value extends far beyond compliance.
The Technical Advantages of Verified Accounts
Higher transaction limits: Unverified accounts are throttled, limiting the scalability of campaigns.
Lower risk of holds: Verified accounts are perceived as lower risk and less likely to face abrupt freezes.
Fewer disputes flagged: PayPal’s backend risk engine is softer on verified accounts with good standing.
Integration privileges: Access to business APIs, payment buttons, and advanced commerce tools.
Brand optics: Buyers are more likely to trust and convert with sellers using verified accounts.
For marketers navigating fast-paced, high-volume verticals — dropshipping, affiliate arbitrage, info-products, etc. — these advantages are operational imperatives.
Section II: The Rise of Digital Marketing's Grey Economy
A Game of Velocity
Digital marketing thrives on speed. Campaigns are launched, tested, pivoted, and terminated within hours. Payments must be instant. Returns must be frictionless. Verification delays, PayPal holds, or compliance bottlenecks can mean the difference between a five-figure launch and a loss-leading dud.
In this environment, the question “Why Are Verified PayPal Accounts in High Demand for Digital Marketers Securely Buy Verified” becomes easier to answer. A verified PayPal account is not a luxury — it is an accelerant.
Marketplaces That Move in Shadows
There exists a booming underground trade of verified PayPal accounts. Sellers advertise:
Aged accounts (with years of history)
Country-specific accounts (US, UK, CA)
Business accounts with tax IDs
“Clean” accounts with no disputes or chargebacks
Verified accounts with high transaction thresholds
These are not mere novelties; they are critical tools in digital marketers' arsenals — particularly in verticals operating at the margins of platform policy.

The question framed in the query — How Many Verified PayPal Accounts Can I Buy Legally Securely Buy Verified — is less a practical how‑to than a flashpoint where technology, commerce, law and ethics intersect. Short answer: you should not buy verified PayPal accounts. Instead, pursue lawful, platform‑sanctioned options such as legitimately opening multiple accounts within PayPal’s rules (e.g., separate personal and business accounts where permitted), using PayPal’s business tools, or engaging payment processors that meet your scaling requirements.
Introduction: framing the problem
In the digital payments ecosystem, verification is currency. Verified accounts are trusted by platforms because they have passed identity, banking and sometimes compliance checks. That trust converts into functionality: higher transaction limits, wider sender/receiver privileges, and increased dispute protection. Unscrupulous marketplaces and clandestine vendors, seeking to monetize that trust, hawk "verified" accounts. Tempting as it may be to buy verified PayPal accounts to solve a cash‑flow problem or to circumvent restrictions, doing so is fraught with peril.
This article interrogates the underlying question — How Many Verified PayPal Accounts Can I Buy Legally Securely Buy Verified — using statutory, contractual and pragmatic lenses. It explains why the impulse to buy is risky, and it offers lawful alternatives for firms and individuals who legitimately need multiple verified payment instruments.
PayPal’s rules and the contractual baseline
The first, nonnegotiable layer is contractual: PayPal’s User Agreement and Acceptable Use Policy. These documents govern account creation, verification, and acceptable conduct. Key contractual tenets include:
Accounts must be opened under the true legal name of the individual or entity that owns them.
Account verification typically requires linking a valid bank account, a credit/debit card, and sometimes identity documents.
Selling, transferring, or otherwise assigning an account to another party is usually prohibited.
Circumventing verification or engaging in deceptive practices to access features is forbidden.
Thus, buying a verified account from a third party usually violates PayPal’s terms. If PayPal discovers that an account is controlled by someone other than the person who underwent verification, it can freeze funds, limit access, and close the account. Contractual breaches may also justify PayPal pursuing restitution or pursuing civil remedies.
Legal and regulatory considerations
From a legal standpoint, acquiring a verified account from someone else raises several red flags:
Identity Misappropriation: Using another person’s identity (even with their consent) may implicate statutes that prohibit identity theft, impersonation, or document misuse. Jurisdictions differ, but legal risk is nontrivial.
Money‑laundering and Anti‑Terrorist Financing (AML) rules: Payment providers are bound by KYC/AML obligations. Accounts used to obscure the origin of funds or to route payments through third‑party identities can attract regulatory scrutiny and criminal investigation.

But is buying a verified PayPal account a smart move? What are the risks, the legal implications, and safer ways to reach the same goals without jeopardizing your money or freedom? This guide answers those questions and gives practical steps to protect your finances.
What is a “Verified” PayPal Account — and why it matters
A PayPal account becomes “verified” when the owner completes PayPal’s identity/ownership checks — typically linking and confirming a bank account or card, and sometimes providing identity documents. Verification signals to PayPal that the account belongs to a real, traceable person or business.
Common benefits
Higher transaction and withdrawal limits.
Lower chance of holds or restrictions (in many cases).
Access to business features: payouts, invoices, PayPal.Me, merchant tools.
Greater trust from buyers/sellers.
Because of those perks, verified accounts are valuable — which is why some people try to buy them instead of going through verification themselves.
Why people buy verified PayPal accounts
People who buy accounts typically want to shortcut something — but the reasons vary, and many are red flags:
Skip verification paperwork or KYC — some users don’t want to submit identity documents or link a bank.
Bypass regional restrictions — people in unsupported countries may try to use accounts from other regions.
Scale operations — merchants running multiple stores sometimes seek multiple verified accounts to spread volume.
Replace banned accounts — users with suspended accounts may try to buy a “clean” account.
Illicit uses — fraudsters and money launderers buy accounts to mask origin and complicate tracing.
The risks you absolutely must know
Buying a verified PayPal account carries major downsides — financial, legal, and operational.
1. Violation of PayPal’s User Agreement
PayPal’s terms prohibit selling, buying, or transferring accounts. If PayPal detects a transferred or sold account it can freeze funds, permanently close the account, and flag associated identities. Both buyer and seller risk losing access and funds.
2. Theft, fraud, and scams
Many “verified account” sellers are scams. You may pay and receive nothing, receive an account that’s been backdoored by the seller, or receive credentials that are already associated with past fraud. If the original owner reports the account compromised, PayPal can reverse transactions or reclaim balances.
3. Money laundering and criminal exposure
Using an account you don’t legally control to receive or move funds risks endorsement of money laundering, even if you were unaware. Law enforcement investigations can result in asset seizure, legal processes, and criminal charges.
4. Account takeover and backdoor access
A seller may retain recovery options (email, phone, security questions). They can later reclaim the account, steal funds, or use it for illicit activity that will trace back to you.
5. Inability to prove ownership
If PayPal asks for proof (ID, bank statements) and you can’t provide matching documentation, PayPal will limit or close the account — often after holding your funds for months.
6. Reputational and business risk
Operating under another person’s identity risks losing customer trust and can violate marketplace rules (Amazon, eBay, etc.), leading to suspended seller privileges in other channels.

Buying .edu e-mail accounts may seem like a shortcut to student discounts and academic services, but it’s risky: vendors and universities track account ownership, and misuse can result in revoked access, blocked purchases, chargebacks, or even prosecution for fraud. Instead of buying accounts, use these legal, low-cost pathways to access student resources and discounts safely.

First, enroll in an accredited institution. Community colleges, extensi
on schools, and many accredited online programs offer genuine student status and usually issue an official .edu address. These routes are often affordable and grant legitimate access to campus services, software discounts, and academic resources.
Second, consider short-term or continuing-education enrollment. Many colleges provide student email to anyone registered in a term class or certificate program — you don’t necessarily need a full degree program. Look for single-course enrollment, night classes, or professional certificates that qualify you for an institutional email.
Third, use third-party student verification services like SheerID or ID.me. Many software vendors and retailers accept verified student status rather than requiring a .edu address. This gives you access to discounts (software, cloud services, hardware) without falsifying credentials.
Fourth, check alumni/staff/library access. If you’re a graduate, staff member, or have library privileges, you may already qualify for campus resources and special accounts. Contact your institution’s alumni or IT office to learn what’s available.
Fifth, explore official student-discount platforms (UNiDAYS, Student Beans) and the GitHub Student Developer Pack, which provide verified access to many developer tools and services.

Alternatives if you’re not eligible for an .edu email
If you can’t qualify for an .edu address, there are safe options:
Use student verification platforms which authenticate enrollment without needing an .edu email.
Look for general discounts (many vendors provide non-student discounts or special pricing for teachers, veterans, or low-income users).
Open-source or free software alternatives to paid educational software (e.g., LibreOffice vs. Office, GIMP vs. Photoshop).
Join local libraries or maker spaces — they often offer access to educational resources for residents.
How to verify and redeem student offers safely
Only use official vendor verification flows or established student platforms.
Never buy someone else’s credentials or share your password.

Chime has become a popular mobile-first banking option for people who want low fees, fast direct deposits, and an easy-to-use app. Because some features require identity verification (and because verification unlocks full functionality), many people look for a quick path to a “verified” Chime account.

➤➤What “verified” means for Chime (and why it matters)➤➤
In Chime’s ecosystem, “verified” generally means Chime (or its banking partner) has confirmed your identity using government-issued ID and taxpayer information (SSN or ITIN). Verification is required for several features: receiving full direct deposit privileges, ordering a debit card, accessing certain transaction limits, and eligibility for features like SpotMe (fee-free overdraft for eligible members). Verification also reduces the odds of holds or freezes triggered by fraud detection systems. In short: verification gives you full, compliant access to your account and its benefits.

➤➤Real benefits of a legitimately verified Chime account➤➤
Full access to direct deposit and faster pay — With verification and active direct deposit you can often receive payroll up to two days early, improving cash flow.
Debit card and ATM access — Verification speeds delivery of your Chime debit card and reduces restrictions on withdrawals and purchases.
Stronger fraud protection — Verified accounts are easier to manage with customer support and are less likely to be affected by identity-related flags.
Convenience features — Automatic savings, round-ups, and integrations with other fintech tools often assume verified accounts for full functionality.
Peace of mind — A verified account is fully compliant with banking rules and less likely to face administrative issues.
➤➤Why you must not buy or use someone else’s account➤➤
Short version: it’s illegal, risky, and unreliable. Longer version:
Violates Chime’s terms and the law. Selling/transferring accounts breaches contract terms and can amount to fraud.

Risk of identity theft and scams. Accounts sold on gray markets are often tied to stolen identities or used to launder funds.
