Maybe money sits at the heart of every controversy about monarchy. Britain has long had trouble making up its mind. Many support the Crown, but many also feel anxious about the cost. That anxiety is increased by the fact that the cost is unknowable. Depends on who’s crunching the numbers. Does the Crown cost taxpayers? Yes. Does it also pay a fortune into government coffers? Also yes. Does the Crown generate tourism income that benefits all? Of course. Does it also rest upon lands obtained and secured when the system was unjust and wealth was generated by exploited workers and thuggery, annexation and enslaved people? Can anyone deny it? According to the last study I saw, the monarchy costs the average taxpayer the price of a pint each year. In light of its many good works that seems a pretty sound investment. But no one wants to hear a prince argue for the existence of a monarchy, any more than they want to hear a prince argue against it. I leave cost-benefit analyses to others. My emotions are complicated on this subject, naturally, but my bottom-line position isn’t. I’ll forever support my Queen, my Commander in Chief, my Granny. Even after she’s gone. My problem has never been with the monarchy, nor the concept of monarchy. It’s been with the press and the sick relationship that’s evolved between it and the Palace. I love my Mother Country, and I love my family, and I always will. I just wish, at the second-darkest moment of my life, they’d both been there for me. And I believe they’ll look back one day and wish they had too.

I cannot tell you how angry it makes me to hear people from North America tell me how much they love England, how beautiful England is, with its traditions. All they see is some frumpy, wrinkled-up person passing by in a carriage waving at a crowd. But what I see is the millions of people, of whom I am just one, made orphans: no motherland, no fatherland, no gods, no mounds of earth for holy ground, no excess of love which might lead to the things that an excess of love sometimes brings, and worst and most painful of all, no tongue.

I was hungry when I left Pyongyang. I wasn't hungry just for a bookshop that sold books that weren't about Fat Man and Little Boy. I wasn't ravenous just for a newspaper that had no pictures of F.M. and L.B. I wasn't starving just for a TV program or a piece of music or theater or cinema that wasn't cultist and hero-worshiping. I was hungry. I got off the North Korean plane in Shenyang, one of the provincial capitals of Manchuria, and the airport buffet looked like a cornucopia. I fell on the food, only to find that I couldn't do it justice, because my stomach had shrunk. And as a foreign tourist in North Korea, under the care of vigilant minders who wanted me to see only the best, I had enjoyed the finest fare available.
”
”
Christopher Hitchens (Love, Poverty, and War: Journeys and Essays)
“
Sooner or later, all talk among foreigners in Pyongyang turns to one imponderable subject. Do the locals really believe what they are told, and do they truly revere Fat Man and Little Boy? I have been a visiting writer in several authoritarian and totalitarian states, and usually the question answers itself. Someone in a café makes an offhand remark. A piece of ironic graffiti is scrawled in the men's room. Some group at the university issues some improvised leaflet. The glacier begins to melt; a joke makes the rounds and the apparently immovable regime suddenly looks vulnerable and absurd. But it's almost impossible to convey the extent to which North Korea just isn't like that. South Koreans who met with long-lost family members after the June rapprochement were thunderstruck at the way their shabby and thin northern relatives extolled Fat Man and Little Boy. Of course, they had been handpicked, but they stuck to their line.
There's a possible reason for the existence of this level of denial, which is backed up by an indescribable degree of surveillance and indoctrination. A North Korean citizen who decided that it was all a lie and a waste would have to face the fact that his life had been a lie and a waste also. The scenes of hysterical grief when Fat Man died were not all feigned; there might be a collective nervous breakdown if it was suddenly announced that the Great Leader had been a verbose and arrogant fraud. Picture, if you will, the abrupt deprogramming of more than 20 million Moonies or Jonestowners, who are suddenly informed that it was all a cruel joke and there's no longer anybody to tell them what to do. There wouldn't be enough Kool-Aid to go round. I often wondered how my guides kept straight faces. The streetlights are turned out all over Pyongyang—which is the most favored city in the country—every night. And the most prominent building on the skyline, in a town committed to hysterical architectural excess, is the Ryugyong Hotel. It's 105 floors high, and from a distance looks like a grotesquely enlarged version of the Transamerica Pyramid in San Francisco (or like a vast and cumbersome missile on a launchpad). The crane at its summit hasn't moved in years; it's a grandiose and incomplete ruin in the making. 'Under construction,' say the guides without a trace of irony. I suppose they just keep two sets of mental books and live with the contradiction for now.

I went to the room in Great Jones Street, a small crooked room, cold as a penny, looking out on warehouses, trucks and rubble. There was snow on the windowledge. Some rags and an unloved ruffled shirt of mine had been stuffed into places where the window frame was warped and cold air entered. The refrigerator was unplugged, full of record albums, tapes, and old magazines. I went to the sink and turned on both taps all the way, drawing an intermittent trickle. Least is best. I tried the radio, picking up AM only at the top of the dial, FM not at all."
The industrial loft buildings along Great Jones seemed misproportioned, broad structures half as tall as they should have been, as if deprived of light by the great skyscraper ranges to the north and south."

She wanted to be lead singer in a coke-snorting hard-rock band but was prepared to be content beating a tambourine at studio parties. Her mind was exceptional, a fact she preferred to ignore. All she desired was the brute electricity of that sound. To make the men who made it. To keep moving. To forget everything. To be that sound. That was the only tide she heeded. She wanted to exist as music does, nowhere, beyond maps of language. Opal knew almost every important figure in the business, in the culture, in the various subcultures. But she had no talent as a performer, not the slightest, and so drifted along the jet trajectories from band to band, keeping near the fervers of her love, that obliterating sound, until we met eventually in Mexico, in somebody's sister's bed, where the tiny surprise of her name, dropping like a pebble on chrome, brought our incoherent night to proper conclusion, the first of all the rest, transactions in reciprocal tourism.
She was beautiful in a neutral way, emitting no light, defining herself in terms of attrition, a skinny thing, near blond, far beyond recall from the hard-edged rhythms of her life, Southwestern woman, hard to remember and forget...There was never a moment between us that did not measure the extent of our true connection. To go harder, take more, die first.

Mestre. Say the word without hissing the conurbated villain, and pitying its citizens. As quickly as they can, two million tourists pass through, or by, Mestre each year, and each one will be struck by the same thought as they wonder at the aesthetic opposition that it represents. Mestre is an ugly town but ugly only in the same way that Michael Jackson might be desccribed as eccentric or a Tabasco Vindaloo flambéed in rocket fuel might be described as warm. Mestre is almost excremental in its hideousness: a fetid, fly-blown, festering, industrial urbanization, scarred with varicose motorways, flyovers, rusting railway sidings and the rubbish of a billion holidaymakers gradually burning, spewing thick black clouds into the Mediterranean sky. A town with apparently no centre, a utilitarian ever-expandable wasteland adapted to house the displaced poor, the shorebound, outpriced, domicile-deprived exiles from its neighbouring city. For, just beyond the condom- and polystyrene-washed, black-stained, mud shores of Marghera, Mestre's very own oil refinery, less than a mile away across the waters of the lagoon in full sight of its own dispossessed citizens, is the Jewel of Adriatic. Close enough for all to feel the magnetism, there stands the most beautiful icon of Renaissance glory and, like so much that can attract tourism, a place too lovely to be left in the hands of its natives, the Serenissima itself, Venice.

Music and dance. What I have written must surely suggest a people cursed by Heaven,... No people on earth, I am persuaded, loves music so well, nor dance, nor oratory, though the music falls strangely on my ears... More than once I have been at Mr. Treacy's when at close of dinner, some traveling harper would be called in, blind as often as not, his fingernails kept long and the mysteries of his art hidden in their horny ridges. The music would come to us with the sadness of a lost world, each note a messenger sent wandering among the Waterford goblets. Riding home late at night, past tavern or alehouse, I would hear harps and violins, thudding feet rising to a frenzy. I have seen them dancing at evening on fairdays, in meadows decreed by custom for such purposes, their bodies swift-moving, and their faces impassive but bright-eyed, intent. I have watched them in silence, reins held loosely in my hand, and have marveled at the stillness of my own body, my shoulders rigid and heavy.

You know (to adopt the easy or conversational style) that you and I belong to a happy minority. We are the sons of the hunters and the wandering singers, and from our boyhood nothing ever gave us greater pleasure than to stand under lonely skies in forest clearings, or to find a beach looking westward at evening over unfrequented seas. But the great mass of men love companionship so much that nothing seems of any worth compared with it. Human communion is their meat and drink, and so they use the railways to make bigger and bigger hives for themselves.

To make way for more resorts with spectacular views, developers destroy native habitats and ignore local concerns. Preservationists decry the growing propensity to bulldoze old hotels and buildings in favor of constructing new resorts, water holes and entertainment spots that look identical whether in Singapore, Dubai or Johannesburg; a world where diversity is replaced with homogeneity. Another catastrophe for countries betting on tourism has come from wealthy vacationers who fall in love with a country and buy so many second houses that locals can no longer afford to live in their own towns and villages. Among the more thoughtful questions is how mass tourism has changed cultures. African children told anthropologists that they want to grow up to be tourists so they could spend the day doing nothing but eating. The tourists who do not speak the local language and rely on guides to tell them what they are seeing and what to think marvel at countries like China with its new wealth and appearance of democracy. Environmentalists wonder how long the globe can continue to support 1 billion people racing around the world for a long weekend on a beach or a ten-day tour of an African game park.

In a sense, they are exposed to people in ways that any novelist, poet, anthropologist, or journalist would love to be. time. A new interdisciplinary community of scientists, environmentalists, health researchers, therapists, and artists is coalescing around an idea: neuroconservation. Embracing the notion that we treasure what we love, those concerned with water and the future of the planet now suggest that, as we understand our emotional well-being and its relationship to water, we are more motivated to repair, restore, and renew waterways and watersheds. Indeed, even as water is threatened, or perhaps because of the threat, public interest in water is very high. We treasure it—or, perhaps more accurately, we spend our treasure to access water for pleasure, recreation, and healing. Wealthy people pay a premium for houses on water, and the not so wealthy pay extra for rentals and hotel rooms sited at the oceanfront, on rivers, or at lakes. Those into outdoor sports, especially fishers and hunters, are fiercely protective of it and have founded numerous environmental organizations designed to protect water habitats for fish, birds, and animals. Over the last two decades, spas have become a sort of modern equivalent to ancient healing wells. As an industry, spas are a global business worth about $60 billion, and they generate another $200 billion in tourism. In 2013, there were 20,000 (up from 4,000 in 1999) spas in the United States producing an annual revenue of over $14 billion (a figure that has grown every year for fifteen years, including those of the recession), and tallying 164 million spa visits by clients.12 Ecotourism provides water adventures and guided trips, often in kayaks, rafts, or canoes. Ocean and river cruises are big business. Cities are creating urban architectures focused on waterscapes, happiness, and sustainability. Museums and public memorials of all sorts often feature water to foster reflection and meditation. And many communities are working to transform industrialized and polluted waterfronts into spaces that are pleasant, environmentally sound, and livable.

On the Road to Perfection: Driving Through India’s Best Highway Infrastructure
A Journey to Remember
Not all roads are created equal. Some you forget as soon as the journey ends, and some leave a mark—smooth, scenic, and satisfying. The Agra-Etawah Toll Road is one such route that stayed with me long after the engine was off. Having driven across several Indian highways, I can say with confidence: this one defines India’s Best Highway Infrastructure.
The First Impression
Leaving behind the historical charm of Agra, I cruised onto the toll road expecting a typical highway. But what I experienced was something entirely different—silky blacktop, disciplined lanes, no sudden jerks or potholes, and the kind of organized traffic that’s rare in India. This wasn't just a road—it was an experience. #India'sBestHighwayInfrastructure
Speed, Safety, and Satisfaction
What really amazed me was the consistent speed I could maintain without worrying about surprise speed breakers, stray cattle, or sharp turns. The road is beautifully engineered with guardrails, reflectors, service lanes, and clear signage. And with help centers and emergency services every few kilometers, you feel well taken care of throughout. #BestHighwayInfrastructure
Infrastructure That Works
I stopped at a clean rest area midway—complete with food joints, washrooms, and even a tyre repair facility. It felt like the road understood a traveler’s needs. It’s more than just a way to get from Agra to Etawah—it’s a well-thought-out highway ecosystem, built for modern India and its growing traffic demands. #ModernRoadMakers
Driving Through India’s Potential
This drive made me realize how road infrastructure isn’t just about connectivity—it’s about boosting local economies, improving tourism, and making everyday travel faster and safer. The Agra–Etawah Toll Road is a prime example of how far India has come and where it's headed.
Final Reflections
I’ve driven on highways in Thailand and UAE, but this Indian road matched them in quality—and surpassed many in character. If you love driving or are planning a road trip in Uttar Pradesh, do yourself a favor and take this route. You’ll not only save time but also enjoy a ride on what I truly believe is India’s Best Highway Infrastructure. #India'sBestHighwayInfrastructure #ModernRoadMakers

When you get some time off. Please travel, even if it is locally. Support local tourism. Learn about your culture, tradition, and art. Learn about the different cultures and diversity we have in our country. You will realize that there is no need to insult each other, but we should love one another and embrace our differences. Learn about the beautiful land or landmarks and our history. Knowing who we are and where we come from is our inheritance and wealth.

To assimilate is to please other people’s senses. It is submission, but also a powerful act of love, unity, brotherhood. It is a complicated and misunderstood metamorphosis. So often, we ask refugees to perform an open mimicry of our culture. This we call assimilation. It is theater. In return, we try to show our good faith by displaying enjoyment of palatable segments of their culture: sushi and curry, bubble tea and baklava. But assimilation isn’t like tourism. You don’t get to dabble for a day. Refugees resign themselves to deep-tissue change from the day their feet touch new soil, when the shape and sound of it is still unimaginable. They commit to changing their senses, to making a practice of their new culture—it happens only by repetition. As a teenager, when I thought it useless to treat myself to a single fancy coffee, valuing only what came regularly, this was assimilation instinct. I didn’t want to play the outsider to yet another life. I wanted to alter my senses, so that I could trust them again.

As I drank, I saw Srebrenica spread out before me from halfway up the hill, coated with a thick winter fog. Snow dusted the hills surrounding us, hugging the town in its icy embrace. Conifer trees dotted the hills, their branches looking muted from the snow covering them. Snow covered all the roofs in the valley, giving everything a white and still appearance. We felt frozen in time, abandoned and forsaken, which was a true reflection of our internal state.
“The government should create a new tourism campaign. Srebrenica, the place where time kneels between mountains.” Ramo waved his hands out to the terrain before us.
After we got our breath back from laughing, I passed the bottle to him. My cheeks flushed as he placed his lips over the spout where my lips had been. He finished drinking and handed me the bottle. Our fingers touched, sparks flying.

Every solo traveller seeks a route that offers both comfort and discovery. The Agra–Etawah Toll Road Project is one such stretch in Uttar Pradesh that has redefined highway experiences. It connects two culturally significant cities while providing a world-class roadway for those who love the thrill of an uninterrupted journey.
The Road That Connects More Than Cities
Agra, globally known for the Taj Mahal, and Etawah, famous for its safari park and rustic charm, are now seamlessly linked by this toll road. The highway is not just a passage—it’s a bridge to opportunities, tourism, and cultural exchange.
A Traveller’s Experience
Driving solo along this stretch feels like gliding over silk. Wide lanes, smooth surfaces, and reliable signages make the journey stress-free. What makes it even more remarkable is the balance between speed and safety. Modern toll systems and lane management ensure minimum waiting time, making the traveller’s road story an effortless one. It’s a reminder that #modernroadmakers long-distance driving truly liberating.
Scenic Beauty Along the Way
Unlike a monotonous highway, this toll road offers delightful glimpses of the countryside. From expansive farmlands to occasional clusters of local life, the view refreshes the mind. Stopping at roadside dhabas adds a flavour of authenticity to the ride—small breaks that add character to the overall travel experience.
Safety and Planning
For a solo explorer, safety is a prime concern. Here, the project shines again. Proper lighting, well-marked emergency zones, and accessible rest areas provide reassurance throughout the trip. The road not only saves time but also builds confidence in travellers who venture out alone.

Agra Etawah Toll Road – The Real Face of India’s Best Highway Infrastructure
Every once in a while, a road comes along that completely changes how you see travel in India. For me, that road is the Agra Etawah Toll Road — a stretch that perfectly represents India’s Best Highway Infrastructure. Whether you’re a frequent traveler or someone who loves long drives, this expressway offers an experience that blends speed, safety, and scenery in perfect harmony.
A Road That Redefines Travel
The Agra Etawah Toll Road, built by Modern Road Makers, covers nearly 124 kilometers and forms a vital part of the iconic Agra–Lucknow Expressway. What makes this route special isn’t just its engineering but its soul — a combination of world-class technology and a traveler-friendly design.
As I began my journey from Agra, the city of the Taj Mahal, I could immediately feel the difference. The smooth blacktop, wide lanes, and clean surroundings made driving effortless. Every few kilometers, I noticed intelligent signboards and automated toll booths that ensured a non-stop, seamless experience. It’s not just a road — it’s a reflection of how far India has come in building modern infrastructure.
That’s when it hit me — this truly is a part of #indiasbesthighwayinfrastructure, where quality meets innovation.
Precision by Modern Road Makers
Credit for this extraordinary piece of connectivity goes to Modern Road Makers, a company that has been at the forefront of transforming India’s road network. They’ve taken infrastructure building to the next level with the #agraetawahtollroadproject, using advanced materials, sustainable construction practices, and cutting-edge technology.
Driving through, I noticed how the entire stretch feels built to international standards — proper gradient control, excellent lane markings, and safety barriers that actually work. The solar-powered lighting along certain sections is not only eco-friendly but also visually stunning when you’re driving at dusk.
It’s small details like these that make #modernroadmakers stand apart from the rest. Every curve and every kilometer shows their dedication to quality.
Comfort That Travelers Appreciate
As a traveler, I always look for roads that make the journey enjoyable. The Agra Etawah Toll Road doesn’t disappoint. The rest stops are clean, well-maintained, and thoughtfully spaced — perfect for a tea break or a quick meal. The greenery on both sides adds calmness, especially during long drives.
Unlike many highways where fatigue sets in quickly, this one keeps you energized. Maybe it’s the smoothness of the ride or the satisfaction of watching kilometers roll by so effortlessly — either way, it’s an experience worth remembering.
When I stopped midway to capture a few photos, I realized something: this road isn’t just connecting two cities; it’s connecting people, dreams, and opportunities.
Boosting Growth and Connectivity
Beyond travel convenience, the Agra Etawah Toll Road has sparked regional growth.
