The darkness is calling. A little danger, a little risk. Feel your heart race. Listen to it. That’s the sound of being alive. It’s your time, Nick. Your one chance to have fun before it’s all stolen by them, the adults, with their cruelty and endless rules, their can’t-do-this, and can’t-do-that’s, their have-tos, and better-dos, their little boxes and cages all designed to break your spirit, to kill your magic.
Brom (The Child Thief)
The sky is deep, the sky is dark. The light of the stars is o damn stark/When I look up, I fill with fear, if all we have is what lies here, this lonely world, this troubled place, then cold dead stars and empty space...Well, I see no reason to persevere, no reason to laugh or shed a tear, no reason to sleep and none to wake/ No promises to keep and none to make. And so at night I still raise my eyes tos tudy the clear but mysterious skies that arch avove us, cold as stone. Are you there God? Are we alone?
Dean Koontz (The Book of Counted Sorrows)
There's more than two to a story -- the doers, the done-tos, and the ones who interpret who's who.
Nina MacLaughlin (Wake, Siren: Ovid Resung)
Street people use cardboard all the time, and bum alleys are just shanties or lean-tos, though. They’re nothing like my house! Mine is deluxe! It’s a big, thick, super sturdy refrigerator box that I found at an appliance store!
Wendelin Van Draanen (Runaway)
I may soon be coming to Warren, tos pend the rest of my life with the others...waiting.
Daniel Keyes (Flowers for Algernon)
Because I figure there's two kinds of people in the world. The ones who do everything that's laid out for them, the supposed-tos, and then there's the people that look above it and do what they want to do. I prefer the latter, but maybe that's just me. A not-supposed to.
Margaux Froley (Escape Theory (Keaton School, #1))
Mario Puzo (The Last Don (Mario Puzo's Mafia))
I guess the universe has a way of knocking supposed-tos right on their asses.
Emily X.R. Pan (The Astonishing Color of After)
Vejur was everything that Spock had ever dreamed of becoming. And yet Vejur was barren! It would never feel pain. Or joy. Or challenge. It was so completely and magnificently logical that its accumulation of knowledge was totally useless.
Gene Roddenberry (Star Trek: The Motion Picture (Star Trek TOS: Movie Novelizations #1))
But no-one came here to live an ordinary life. Despite what our somnambulistic, mythless society society tells us — a place stuffed to the gilders with unawake, unthinking folk ruled by shoulds, oughts and have-tos; people who have no understanding of themselves; individuals afraid to acknowledge, let alone live their dreams — you came here to weave your unique essence and vision into the world, thus rendering it magnificent, both for yourself and others.
Thea Euryphaessa (Running Into Myself)
If J. K. Rowling had written Harry Potter in Google Docs instead of Microsoft Word, she would have granted Google the worldwide rights to her work, the right to adapt or dramatize all the Muggles as Google saw fit, to say nothing of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Google would have retained the rights to sell her stories to Hollywood studios and to have them performed on stages around the world, as well as own all the translation rights. Had Rowling written her epic novel in Google Docs, she would have granted Google the rights to her $15 billion Harry Potter empire—all because the ToS say so.
Marc Goodman (Future Crimes)
Kiekvieną akimirką jaučiame, kad negalime laimės išlaikyti, ir nė nebandome <...> Bet jeigu mes nemėginame sučiupti jos ir suturėti savo šiurkščiomis rankomis, tai gal ji, niekieno nebaidoma, išlieka mūsų akių gilumoje? Gal ji išlieka ten, kol gyvos tos akys?
Erich Maria Remarque (The Night in Lisbon)

- Es uz kapu vainagiem skatos ļoti nopietni, - Larijs aizrādīja. - Amerikā tos Ziemassvētkos karina uz durvīm. Pieņemu, ka tāpēc, lai atgādinātu - cik labi, ka vēl neesam zem tiem.
Gerald Durrell (Marrying Off Mother: And Other Stories)
Niekur nieškok durų į kitokį pasaulį, nes tos durys yra tavyje.
Ričardas Gavelis (Vilniaus džiazas)
Tačiau geri motyvai ne visuomet lemia gerus rezultatus.
Romain Gary (Promise at Dawn)
viņš pārtrauca rakstīt, bet ne sacerēt, stāsti dzīvoja viņā, un viņš tos rakstīja uz iekšu, sev, viņš vairs neredzēja vajadzību likt tos uz papīra un spiest lasīt citiem, katram pašam jāraksta savi stāsti, galu galā.
Andra Neiburga (Stum Stum)
Dėl to dabar aš „norėčiau“ būti parašęs Stendhalio La Chartreuse de Varme, Tolstojaus Anna Karenina, Prousto A la recherche du temps perdu, Th. Manno Der Tod in Venedig ir Der Zauberberg; sukomponavęs Vivaldi I quattro staggioni, Mozarto Koncertą klarnetui A-Dur (K. 622), Kvintetus G-Moll ir D-Dur (K. 516, 593), nebaigtas Mišias C-Moll (K. 427), Ravelio Le Tombeau de Couperin; nutapęs Watteau L’Enseigne de Geisaint, G. de la Tour (de la Tur) La nativité, kai kuriuos Chardino natiurmortus, Renoiro Le Sentier a travers les champs, Soutine’o Jour de vent à Auxerre. Bet nenorėčiau būti niekieno poezijos autorius.
Alfonsas Nyka-Niliūnas (Dienoraščio fragmentai 1938-1975)
When taking Spock to see the spores, Leila comments, "It's not much further." having been beaten about the head severely on the difference between "further" and "farther," I believe I can say with some trembling confidence that she should say, "it's not much farther." "Further" means "to a greater extent or degree" whereas "farther" means "to a greater distance." (I know this is really picky, but hey, that's my business.)
Phil Farrand (The Nitpicker's Guide for Classic Trekkers)
- Nepavydėk man, Auksaburni.
Hermann Hesse (Narcissus and Goldmund)
Kas myli, skleidžia kitam savo vidaus "aš" šviesą tikėdamasis išvysti tos šviesos atspindį.
André Maurois (To an Unknown Lady)

Star Trek? Oh, I did my homework. TOS, TNG, DS9. Even Voyager and Enterprise. I watched them all in chronological order. The movies, too. Phasers locked on target.
Ernest Cline (Ready Player One (Ready Player One, #1))
Džeina Ostina (Pride and Prejudice)
I can hear all I want about sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll on the playground, but only the Girl Scouts know the step-by-steps for limbering up a a new book without injuring the binding and the how-tos of packing a suitcase to be a more efficient traveler. The only thing harder to come by around here than a suitcase is a brand-new book, but I keep the Girl Scout motto as close to my heart as the promise anyway: Be Prepared.
Tupelo Hassman (Girlchild)
It cost Christ and all His followers sharp showers and hot sweats ere they won to the top of the mountain. But still our soft nature would have heaven coming to our bedside when we are sleeping, and lying down with us, that we might go to heaven in warm clothes; but all that came there found wet feet by the way, and sharp storms that did take the hide off their face, and found tos and fros, and ups and downs, and many enemies by the way.
Samuel Rutherford (The Loveliness of Christ: Selections from the Letters of Samuel Rutherford)
Magic?" What did magic have to do with breaking into someone's store and stealing their stuff? "Don't you get it?" Peter said. "You're free now. You don't have to live by their rules anymore." Peter pointed into the inky blackness of the basement. "The darkness is calling. A little danger, a little risk. Feel your heart race, listen to it. That's the sound of being alive. It's your time, Nick. Your one chance to have fun before it's all stolen by them, the adults, with their cruelty and endless rules, their can't-do-this, and can't-do-that's, their have-tos, and better-dos, their little boxes and cages all designed to break your spirit, to kill your magic.

Mežā Kad es cilvēkos eju, visur kāds mērs man ceļā krīt un man uz kakla krīt. Kad es mežā eju, es pilnīgi jūtu, ka man bija jābūt te. It kā nepiespiests, laimīgs koks es būtu un man melnalkšņa dvēsele.

Marcelijus Martinaitis (Mes gyvenome.
Arundhati Roy (The God of Small Things)
There are no formulas—no definitive how-tos—for growth in the inner character of Jesus. Such growth is a way of relentless seeking. But there are many things we can do to place ourselves at the disposal of God, and “if with all our hearts we truly seek him, we shall surely find him
Dallas Willard (Renovation of the Heart: Putting On the Character of Christ)
O tos mintys, mintys!

At a time when so many people are just checking things off a bucket list, other travelers are finding that they want more. Going Local explores the whys and how to’s of really experiencing an area and its culture through the people who live there. Includes a plethora of real life travel stories from experts and everyday people alike.
Nicholas Kontis (Going Local: Experiences and Encounters on the Road)
I need your trust in this, Alec. Can you give it?" Alec looked sidelong at the fire for a long moment, then locked eyes with him again, and replied in halting Aurenfaie, "Rei phoril tos tokun meh brithir, vri sh'ruit'ya." Though you thrust your dagger at my eyes, I will not flinch. A solemn oath, and one Seregil had pledged him not so long ago.
Lynn Flewelling (Stalking Darkness (Nightrunner, #2))
Arundhati Roy (The God of Small Things)
Vienus traukia vieno tipo moterys, kitus kito. Margarita - man nereikia to sakyti - buvo kiaurai matoma, bet kartais ji pavydėdavo toms, kurios nešiojo paslaptį ar apsimesdavo jos apgaubtos.
Julian Barnes (The Sense of an Ending)
Your teen is probably trying—and trying hard—to do everything his or her peers are expected to do as they mature and face increasing responsibilities. But it’s a daily struggle when the teen has a deficiency in what are called executive skills, the functions of our brains and thought processes that help us regulate our behavior, set goals and meet them, and balance demands and desires, wants, needs, and have-tos.
Richard Guare (Smart but Scattered Teens: The "Executive Skills" Program for Helping Teens Reach Their Potential)
Isabel Allende (Violeta)
Largo, desierto, invariable tedio.
Mario Benedetti (La tregua)
Through the uneven morning mist, she could make out the ruin of the monastery on the northern verge. The broken, roofless walls of outbuildings stretched south of the main ruins in a broken curve. Birches and a few young oaks had grown up where monks had likely once raised vegetables. The rest of the clearing was filled with grass and brambles cut through with newly blazed paths. Four lean-tos had been erected just beyond the stone fence of an overgrown graveyard.
Neal Stephenson (The Mongoliad)

A climate's changes are tough to quantify. Butterflies can help. Entomologists prefer "junk species--" the kind of butterflies too common for most collections-- to keep up with what's going on in the insect's world. They're easy to find and observe. When do something unusual, something's changed in the area. Art Shapiro's team at UC Davis monitors ten local study sites, some since the 1970s. The ubiquitous species are the study's go-tos, helping distinguish between lasting changes (climate warming, habitat loss) and ones that will right themselves (one cold winter, droughts like last year's). Consistency is key; they collect details year after year, no empty data sets between. A few species have disappeared from parts of the study area altogether, probably a lasting change. On the other hand, seemingly big news in 2012 might be just a year's aberration. Two butterflies came back to the city of Davis last year, the umber skipper after 30 years, the woodland skipper after 20-- both likely a result of a dry winter with near-perfect breeding conditions of sunny afternoons and cool nights.

Viskas man čia tebeatrodo be prasmės, be dvasios, be istorijos. Didžiojo Pano švilpynė staiga nutilo lipant iš lėktuvo New Yorko aerodrome.

Aklını alıvermiş gök ela renkli gözler; Her dakika biricik sevgilisini özler, Her dakika ağlarmış, sızlarmış, ah edermiş; Aşkından perişanmış, mahzunmuş, derbedermiş...

Niekas tau jokios pagalbos neteiks. Niekas tavęs neatjaus, nepaguos, į mirties paslaptį pakeleivingos meilės žodžiu nepalydės. Seniau, bent kituose kraštuose, kariamajam bent paskutinį norą patenkindavo - duodavo pavalgyti, dūmą nuryti, laišką parašyti, kokią mauškę išmesti... o čia - paspiria koja ir viskas,

Sabbath is that one day. It is a reprieve from what you ought to do, even though the list of oughts is infinitely long and never done. Oughts are tyrants, noisy and surly, chronically dissatisfied. Sabbath is the day you trade places with them: they go in the salt mine, and you go out dancing. It’s the one day when the only thing you must do is to not do the things you must. You are given permission— issued a command, to be blunt—to turn your back on all those oughts. You get to willfully ignore the many niggling things your existence genuinely depends on—and is often hobbled beneath—so that you can turn to whatever you’ve put off and pushed away for lack of time, lack of room, lack of breath. You get to shuck the have-tos and lay hold of the get-tos.
Mark Buchanan (The Rest of God: Restoring Your Soul by Restoring Sabbath)
A kitten is almost too easy, I think, as I quickly pull out its fur and separate and de-bone it, and put the pieces in the blast cooker for three of the remaining four minutes, then add them to my gumbo, just as Chef Reamsy calls time. “Ladies first,” he says, as I present him with a plate. “What have we here?” “Chef, this is a Slim Jim, Chee-Tos, and kitten gumbo in a spicy Pepsi sauce,” I say. “Bon appetite.” He picks through it. “It certainly looks visually stunning,” he says. “What’d you use in the sauce?” “Pepsi, and a little K-C Masterpiece barbecue sauce. I put that in a pan and let it reduce down.” He takes a bite. “Flavorful. The meat is moist and tender, the sauce has just the right amount of spice, and I love the way you incorporated the stray kitten into the dish. Well done indeed.

... be knygų jau nebegalėjau apsieiti. Ne tiek be knygų, kiek be paties skaitymo.

Of course. She’s a great mom.” Some would also tack on sentiments like, “I couldn’t do it without her,” and “It’s amazing how she keeps the house running.” I thought it was interesting that when I used the word “proud,” men almost always pointed straight to their wives’ role as a mother and caretaker. So I reframed the question, and asked, “Beyond her role as a mother or a wife,” I clarify, “are you proud of her?” The men whose wives forfeited the focus of their personal passion in the context of becoming a wife and a mom—those women with no connection to their Unicorn Space—had a hard time saying yes. They’d often hedge, hem and haw, then finally land on something their life partners did in the past that caused them to feel proud. I call this The Case of the She Used To’s, and it’s strong evidence that a woman’s gone missing.

Sometimes my clients are unclear about whether they are striving toward their potential or are on a search for glory, but a search for glory is pretty easy to spot. Any search for glory is propelled by what Horney called the tyranny of the should. Listening to Talia talk, it was difficult not to notice the “shoulds” and “supposed to’s” that littered her sentences: Work should be Wow! She should be in graduate school. Her life should look better than it did. Shoulds can masquerade as high standards or lofty goals, but they are not the same. Goals direct us from the inside, but shoulds are paralyzing judgments from the outside. Goals feel like authentic dreams while shoulds feel like oppressive obligations. Shoulds set up a false dichotomy between either meeting an ideal or being a failure, between perfection or settling. The tyranny of the should even pits us against our own best interests.

It’s easy to underestimate how profound and holistic Roddenberry’s vision of the techscape of the future was. By today’s standards, the available technology of 1964 was downright primitive. Doors did not open automatically when we approached them. The first handheld calculator was still in the future, as were microwave ovens and cell phones. 1964 was a year before most Americans had even heard of a place called Vietnam, five years before man walked on the moon, 25 years before anyone ever surfed the Internet. Your phone had a curly cord, and the new innovation of “touchtone” dialing was merely a year old. Even the television sets that viewers watched would be considered positively prehistoric today. Most TVs were black-and-white models, and the majority of those sets had no remote control. There was no cable or satellite; rabbit ears and roof-top antennas were the norm. The world looked, and was, different.

Skaitydamas Bibliją aš visaf sutrikdavau toje vietoje, kur buvo aprašoma moters kilmė - iš Adomo šonkaulio. Sutrikdavau todėl, kad nesupratau. Kam Dievui reikėjo daryti tokią sudėtingą operaciją, kai jis, Visagalis, sukūręs dangų, Žemę ir žvaigždynus, moterį sukurti galėjo daug paprasčiau? Kam tokia kanibališka operacija? Be to, vyrų šonkaulių nuo tos operacijos nesumažėjo. Gerai, metafora, simbolis. Bet kur slypi logika? Pasirodo, viskas gan paprasta.

No katra miesas auda. Cilvēks var cilvēku grauzt Dēļ maizes, dēļ slavas, dēļ lupatām Līdz saules rietam no tās dienas kad saule aust, Pa zobam, pa stundai, pa drupatām. Es saku paldies zemei, Kas man tevi deva. Tu esi avots, Un tevi izdzert nevar.

Bruce Mars said, “It’s been 45 years ago and I still get 5-to-10 fan letters every single month from people who were born only 20 to 30 years ago. Just the other day I got an envelope in the mail with a couple photos of Finnegan, and the fellow asked me to sign them. And get this, he’s 17! EVERY EMAIL LIST SHOULD ______ The answer I always get when I ask the above question? Provide Value. You’re supposed to provide value. That’s the baseline expectation. But an email list that stands out isn’t necessarily one that’s always spoon-feeding subscribers with free tips and resources. I used to think that value was providing free content, free downloads, more free tips and how-tos. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. The value that makes a difference is being the voice of wisdom for your subscribers…Pointing out their limiting beliefs, mistakes, and myths…Convincing them of your worldview and getting them to buy into it…Turning their assumptions and fears into strength and positivity.

Outside, Frank and Joe mounted their motorcycles and rode through the downtown traffic to the Bayport waterfront. Leaving the big commercial piers behind, they took the Shore Road, past a section of private docks to where the brothers kept their trim speedboat, the Sleuth. Driving on, the Hardys followed the road along the curve of the left bank of the bay to the mouth of the harbor. Here they turned north and continued parallel with the ocean. Soon they saw a jumble of board shanties on the wide beach ahead. Some were nothing more than open lean-tos, but others had glass windows and stovepipes. Pieces of ragged clothing fluttered from ropes in the breeze. Smoke curled up lazily from a small fire around which three men lay, watching the steam from a black pot which hung on a tripod above the flames.

As I chattered on, I could practically see my grandma shaking her head at me. Grandma Ruth had cooked up a storm for every Passover, Yom Kippur, and Chanukah, piling her table till it groaned with challah rolls, beef brisket in a ketchup-based sauce, and tomato and cucumber salad so fresh and herby and acidic it could make you feel like summer in the middle of winter.

Regarding the identifying imprint of NCC, Jefferies had very specific reasons for his choices. The letter “N,” under international aviation agreements, designated registration within the United States. “CC” (or “CCCC”) identified aircraft from the Soviet Union. Jefferies, believing that a venture of this magnitude would have to be the result of a United Earth, wanted the letters combined. Roddenberry agreed. As for “1701,” Jefferies didn’t want to use any numerals on the spaceship that would be hard to read at a distance and therefore eliminated threes, fours, sixes, eights and nines.

Some ants are entrepreneurs, striking out on their own, finding an unexploited niche, laying eggs, and raising their own employee pool.34 Gradually, the new nest turns from a mom-and-pop operation (without pop) to a major corporation as the growing staff of underlings develops a caste structure and a division of responsibilities. The sheer growth of the community produces advantages. As colony size increases, so does the safety (and the expendability) of the individual. The group can shift resources from a frantic fecundity35 to other forms of production … or of usurpation. Large insect colonies benefit from improved defense. Small colonies have to live in vulnerable lean-tos. Large colonies manage to construct fortresses. (Shades of Jericho!) What’s more, large colonies have evolved the luxury of defending their ramparts with castes of biologically remodeled soldiers—huge, well armored, and well armed. Small ant colonies, where everybody has to do a little bit of everything, cannot afford to produce six-legged battle tanks.

But for most of us there’s a wide gray area between the have-tos and want-tos in our lives. If you’re not careful, that area will fill up with e-mail, meetings, and the requests of others, leaving no room for the work you consider important.

When we’re stuck in the maya, we’re caught in survival mode, suffocating and in perpetual overwhelm, while juggling have-tos, jumping through hoops, and trying not to drown in an endless sea of red tape, media input, and OS updates. Survival consciousness is what generates the fear and separation frequencies that keep the darkness alive, while blinding us to the fact that there’s more to life than third-dimensional slavery and the rules, structure, and shackles the matrix places upon us.

a marked change occurred between 2019 and 2020. The dual crises of the pandemic and Black Lives Matter protests ran slam into the twin dangers of Q-Anon and the consolidation of the Trump paramilitary. In 2019, there were sixty-five incidents of domestic terrorism or attempted violence, but in the run-up to the election in 2020, that number nearly doubled, according to a study by the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Twenty-one plots were disrupted by law enforcement.5 Violent extremists in the United States and terrorists in the Middle East have remarkably similar pathways to radicalization. Both are motivated by devotion to a charismatic leader, are successful at smashing political norms, and are promised a future racially homogeneous paradise. Modern American terrorists are much more akin to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) than they are to the old Ku Klux Klan. Though they take offense at that comparison, the similarities are quite remarkable. Most American extremists are not professional terrorists on par with their international counterparts. They lack operational proficiency and weapons. But they do not lack in ruthlessness, targets, or ideology. However, the overwhelming number of white nationalist extremists operate as lone wolves. Like McVeigh in the 1990s and others from the 1980s, they hope their acts will motivate the masses to follow in their footsteps. ISIS radicals who abandon their homes and immigrate to the Syria-Iraq border “caliphate” almost exclusively self-radicalize by watching terrorist videos. The Trump insurgents are radicalizing in the exact same way. Hundreds of tactical training videos easily accessible on social media show how to shoot, patrol, and fight like special forces soldiers. These video interviews and lessons explaining how to assemble body armor or make IEDs and extolling the virtues of being part of the armed resistance supporting Donald Trump fill Facebook and Instagram feeds. Some even call themselves the “Boojahideen,” an English take on the Arabic “mujahideen,” or holy warrior. U.S. insurgents in the making often watch YouTube and Facebook videos of tactical military operations, gear reviews, and shooting how-tos. They then go out to buy rifles, magazines, ammunition, combat helmets, and camouflage clothing and seek out other “patriots” to prepare for armed action. This is pure ISIS-like self-radicalization. One could call them Vanilla ISIS.
