A nejen že si to říkal, měl to také napsáno na vývěsním štítu, kde vedle obrázku vysoké dámské šněrovací boty bylo napsáno třeba: Alois Krátký, švec. A ten pan Krátký, mistr ševcovský, sedával večer u piva a vedl takovéhle řeči: "Milej zlatej, když já vám ušiju nový boty, můžete v nich jít pěšky na pouť na Svatou horu a zase zpátky za jedinej den, a až se vrátíte, tak nebudete línej a přijdete mi poděkovat, i kdyby to bylo v deset hodin večer. Takový já šiju boty."
Jak víte, povídal dále doktor Vlach, ševci vymřeli. Nestalo se to tím, že by na ně přišla nějaká nemoc nebo že je zničila Baťova továrna. Přišla horší pohroma. V příští generaci se z nějakých naprosto nepochopitelných důvodů začal švec stydět za to, že je ševcem, truhlář, že je truhlářem, zámečník, že je zámečníkem.
Syn mistra Krátkého pracuje na tátově verpánku v témže kumbálku, ale na firmě má napsáno: výroba obuvi. Já vím, rozčiloval se doktor, že kdyby jeho táta vstal z mrtvých, že by vlastnoručně tu firmu sundal a řekl by synovi: "Tak ty se stydíš za tátovo řemeslo? Copak ty jsi nějaká výroba obuvi? Ty jsi švec! Vždyť je to učiněná hrůza. Člověk kouká po firmách a vůbec to nepoznává. A co ten Volek naproti? Ten se také nějak zmohl. Má tam napsáno: tovární sklad nábytku. On má továrnu?" Syn by shovívavě vysvětloval, že Volek nemá továrnu, že je to jen taková reklama, víš? "Reklama?" vybuchl by starý pán, "u mne to není reklama, u mne je to lež, klamání lidí a jalová pejcha. Reklama je u mne poctivě udělaná bota nebo jarmara."
Doktor Vlach povídal, že toho starého pána by to rozčilovalo, ale my že už jsme na to zvyklí. Přečteme firmu a hned si ji v duchu přeložíme do prosté mluvy obecné. Pánský módní salón, to je přece krejčí, návrhy, dekorace, interiéry, to je malíř pokojů, výroba železných konstrukcí, to je malý zámečník s jedním učněm, protože kdyby to byli dva takoví, tak už to budou spojené strojírny nebo tak nějak. Továrna dehtových výrobků, nad tím už byste zaváhali. Jen se nedejte zmásti, to je náš starý známý mistr pokrývač, a dehtové výrobky, které potřebuje, si z některé továrny pěkně kupuje. Já ho náhodou znám.
Skutečnost, že dnešní řemeslníci se většinou za své řemeslo stydí, je zastíněna tím, jak se stydí dnešní výrobky za své původce. Předměty jsou tu jen proto, aby za ně byla zaplacena příslušná cena, ale zatvrzele odmítají sloužit svému účelu. A neříkejte mi, povídal doktor Vlach, že vidím příliš černě. Že ještě dnes jsou řemeslníci, kteří dělají dobré a poctivé věci, že lze ještě dostat například nábytek provedený tak, že se srdce směje, nábytek, jehož skříně se kupodivu otvírají, aniž je nutno jimi lomcovat, v jehož knihovně se skla posunují lehce, nábytek, který si tyto své vlastnosti udrží dlouhou řadu let.
Mám z toho radost, ale většině lidí je to málo platné. Myslím tu převážnou většinu, pro kterou 50 000 korun reprezentuje asi tak celoživotní úspory a ne nábytek do jednoho pokoje. Tito lidé se většinou smířili se svým životním standardem, ale je pochopitelné, že trvají na tom, aby se i jejich skříně otvíraly, skla v knihovně posunovala a aby nedocházelo k paradoxu, který by je nutil, aby proto, že nejsou bohati, musili kupovat každé tři roky nový nábytek.

TIO TITO’S SUBLIME LIME BAR COOKIES Preheat oven to 350 degrees F., rack in the middle position. ½ cup finely-chopped coconut (measure after chopping—pack it down when you measure it) 1 cup cold salted butter (2 sticks, 8 ounces, ½ pound) ½ cup powdered (confectioners) sugar (no need to sift unless it’s got big lumps) 2 cups all-purpose flour (pack it down when you measure it) 4 beaten eggs (just whip them up with a fork) 2 cups white (granulated) sugar cup lime juice (freshly squeezed is best) cup vodka (I used Tito’s Handmade Vodka) ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking powder ½ cup all-purpose flour (pack it down when you measure it) Powdered (confectioners) sugar to sprinkle on top Coconut Crust: To get your half-cup of finely-chopped coconut, you will need to put approximately ¾ cup of shredded coconut in the bowl of a food processor. (The coconut will pack down more when it’s finely-chopped so you’ll need more of the stuff out of the package to get the half-cup you need for this recipe.) Chop the shredded coconut up finely with the steel blade. Pour it out into a bowl and measure out ½ cup, packing it down when you measure it. Return the half-cup of finely chopped coconut to the food processor. (You can also do this by spreading out the shredded coconut on a cutting board and chopping it finely by hand.) Cut each stick of butter into eight pieces and arrange them in the bowl of the food processor on top of the chopped coconut. Sprinkle the powdered sugar and the flour on top of that. Zoop it all up with an on-and-off motion of the steel blade until it resembles coarse cornmeal. Prepare a 9-inch by 13-inch rectangular cake pan by spraying it with Pam or another nonstick cooking spray. Alternatively, for even easier removal, line the cake pan with heavy-duty foil and spray that with Pam. (Then all you have to do is lift the bar cookies out when they’re cool, peel off the foil, and cut them up into pieces.) Sprinkle the crust mixture into the prepared cake pan and spread it out with your fingers. Pat it down with a large spatula or with the palms of your impeccably clean hands. Hannah’s 1st Note: If your butter is a bit too soft, you may end up with a mass that balls up and clings to the food processor bowl. That’s okay. Just scoop it up and spread it out in the bottom of your prepared pan. (You can also do this in a bowl with a fork or a pie crust blender if you prefer.) Hannah’s 2nd Note: Don’t wash your food processor quite yet. You’ll need it to make the lime layer. (The same applies to your bowl and fork if you make the crust by hand.) Bake your coconut crust at 350 degrees F. for 15 minutes. While your crust is baking, prepare the lime layer. Lime Layer: Combine the eggs with the white sugar. (You can use your food processor and the steel blade to do this, or you can do it by hand in a bowl.) Add the lime juice, vodka, salt, and baking powder. Mix thoroughly. Add the flour and mix until everything is incorporated. (This mixture will be runny—it’s supposed to be.) When your crust has baked for 15 minutes, remove the pan from the oven and set it on a cold stovetop burner or a wire rack. Don’t shut off the oven! Just leave it on at 350 degrees F. Pour the lime layer mixture on top of the crust you just baked. Use potholders to pick up the pan and return it to the oven. Bake your Sublime Lime Bar Cookies for an additional 30 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven and cool your lime bars in the pan on a cold stovetop burner or a wire rack. When the pan has cooled to room temperature, cover it with foil and refrigerate it until you’re ready to serve. Cut the bars into brownie-sized pieces, place them on a pretty platter, and sprinkle them lightly with powdered sugar. Yum! Hannah’s 3rd Note: If you would prefer not to use alcohol in these bar cookies, simply substitute whole milk for the vodka. This recipe works both ways and I can honestly tell you that I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t like my Sublime Lime Bar Cookies!

What are the implications of ethnic identity for multi-racial and multi-ethnic societies? Tatu Vanhanen of the University of Tampere, Finland, has probably researched the effects of ethnic diversity more systematically than anyone else. In a massive, book-length study, he measured ethnic diversity and levels of conflict in 148 countries, and found correlations in the 0.5 to 0.9 range for the two variables, depending on how the variables were defined and measured. Homogeneous countries like Japan and Iceland show very low levels of conflict, while highly diverse countries like Lebanon and Sudan are wracked with strife.
Prof. Vanhanen found tension in all multi-ethnic societies: “Interest conflicts between ethnic groups are inevitable because ethnic groups are genetic kinship groups and because the struggle for existence concerns the survival of our own genes through our own and our relatives’ descendants.” Prof. Vanhanen also found that economic and political institutions make no difference; wealthy, democratic countries suffer from sectarian strife as much as poor, authoritarian ones: “Ethnic nepotism belongs to human nature and . . . it is independent from the level of socioeconomic development (modernization) and also from the degree of democratization.”
Others have argued that democracy is particularly vulnerable to ethnic tensions while authoritarian regimes like Saddam Hussein’s Iraq or Tito’s Yugoslavia can give the impression of holding it in check. One expert writing in Foreign Affairs explained that for democracy to work “the party or group that loses has to trust the new majority and believe that its basic interests will still be protected and that there is nothing to fear from a change in power.” He wrote that this was much less likely when opposing parties represent different races or ethnicities.
The United Nations found that from 1989 to 1992 there were 82 conflicts that had resulted in at least 1,000 deaths each. Of these, no fewer than 79, or 96 percent, were ethnic or religious conflicts that took place within the borders of recognized states. Only three were cross-border conflicts.
Wars between nations are usually ethnic conflicts as well. Internal ethnic conflict has very serious consequences. As J. Philippe Rushton has argued, “The politics of ethnic identity are increasingly replacing the politics of class as the major threat to the stability of nations.”
One must question the wisdom of then-president Bill Clinton’s explanation for the 1999 NATO bombing of Serbia: “[T]he principle we and our allies have been fighting for in the Balkans is the principle of multi-ethnic, tolerant, inclusive democracy. We have been fighting against the idea that statehood must be based entirely on ethnicity.”
That same year, the American supreme commander of NATO, Wesley Clark, was even more direct: “There is no place in modern Europe for ethnically pure states. That’s a 19th century idea and we are trying to transition into the 21st century, and we are going to do it with multi-ethnic states.

Kako uglednom gostu, takoreći caru careva, reći da u Socijalističkoj Autonomnoj Pokrajini Vojvodini nema medveda. Ugled zemlje je bio doveden u pitanje. U Jugoslaviji je, bar u statistici i bar na papiru, moralo biti svega. Tito je kao iz topa rekao: Rano sutra medvjed-kapitalac biti će vaš. Čim se negus povukao u svoje odaje, Tito je pozvao generala Đurića. Objasnio mu šta je na stvari. Rekao mu da će on, Tito, i car Selasije u pet i petnaest ujutru biti na čeki, a da u pet i petnaest očekuje da iz šipražja izađe medved. I da on, to jest Đurić, pazi šta radi. Jutra su tamo prohladna. Ne mogu oni dugo čekati. A on, Đurić, neka vidi što mu je činiti. General Đurić je bio čovek posebnog kova. Izlazio je on na kraj i sa težim zadacima. Rano ujutru, Selasije i Tito, obavijeni izmaglicom, s puškama na gotovs, stajali su na čeki prekraćujući vreme u srdačnom i prijateljskom razgovoru o bilateralnim odnosima dveju prijateljskih zemalja. Tačno u pet i petnaest, u zakazano vreme, iz magle je, vozeći bicikl, izronio medved. U prvi mah niko nije mogao verovati svojim očima. Zver je, ričući, slineći i benaveći se, nezadrživo nadirala na biciklu marke rog. Tito je odmah pomislio na diverziju. Na neprijateljsku emigraciju! Sasvim razložno, uostalom. Jer, medved koji ume da vozi bicikl sigurno ume i da puca. Lezite, Vaše veličanstvo, povikao je Tito. Atentat! Hteo je da pozove Rankovića. Ali Ranković je bio daleko, u Beogradu, i samo što nije bio smenjen. Selasije nije hteo da zalegne. Judejski Lav nikada ne uzmiče pred opasnošću. A medved je punom brzinom jurišao na čeku. Negusova naivnost privremeno je izvadila stvar. Gospodine maršale, rekao je Car Careva, znao sam da je u socijalističkoj Jugoslaviji životni standard izuzetno visok, ali da ovde i medvedi imaju bicikle, o tome nisam mogao ni sanjati. Tito je bio ponosan. A obezbeđenje je hitro reagovalo. Misleći da je tu reč o pokušaju atentata - ispalili su na medveda granatu iz ručnog bacača. Silina eksplozije sirotu je životinju raznela na komade od kojih je najkrupniji - glava - pala pravo negusu pred noge. Tito je kasnije, zbog pretrpljene sramote, hteo da smeni kompletan vojni i bezbednosni vrh, a da generala Đuriča degradira u čin zastavnika prve klase. Ali je od namere odustao kada se stvar takoreći razjasnila. General Đurić je, u stisci sa vremenom, nemajući pri ruci upotrebljivu životinju, iz cirkusa Adria rekvirirao medveda obučenog da vozi bicikl i da, kreveljeći se, zabavlja decu i odrasle imbecile. Medveda su nakljukali jakim sedativima i pravovremeno ga pustili u blizini čeke. Sve bi bilo u redu da medved nije naišao na lovočuvarev bicikl, po navici ga uzjahao i odvezao se pravo u preranu smrt.

Maquiavelo puede pasar casi como un santo. Que una u otra vez sacrificó en los altares de Afrodita (de la Pandemia siempre, porque fue varón a carta cabal), parece ser lo más probable pero fueron pasiones o pasioncillas que no alteraron la paz de su hogar, ni sobrepusieron en modo alguno (la carta a Vettori lo está diciendo) a su labor intelectual. Khrushchev's political necrophagy ( = blaming and condemning one's predecessor in office. It is a dangerous game. It hurts the country's national pride and it usually turns against its own user ) evolved from the Soviet tradition of sanctifying the supreme ruler. Although the communists publicly proclaimed the decisive role of the people in history, the Kremlin and its KGB believed that only the leader counted. Change the public image of the leader and you change history, I heard over and over from Khrushchev's lips.
Khrushchev was certainly the most controversial Soviet to reign in the Kremlin. He unmasked Stalin's crimes, but he made political assassination a main instrument of his own foreign policy; he authored a policy of peaceful coexistence with the West but he pushed the world to the brink of nuclear war; he repaired Moscow's relationships with Yugoslavia's Tito, but he destroyed the unity of the communist world. His close association with Stalin's killings made him aware of what political crime could accomplish and gave him a taste for the simple criminal solution. His total ignorance about the civilized world, together with his irrational hatred of the "bourgeoisie" and his propensity to offend people, made him believe that disinformation and threats were the most efficient and dignified way for a Soviet leader to deal with "bourgeois" governments.
As that very clever master of deception Yuri Andropov once told me, if a good piece of disinformation is repeated over and over, after a while it will take on a life of its own and will, all by itself, generate a horde or unwitting but passionate advocates.
When I was working for Ceausescu, I always tried to find a way to help him reach a decision on his own, rather than telling him directly what I thought he should do about something. That way both of us were happy. From our KGB advisors, I had learned that the best way to ut over a deception was to let the target see something for himself, with his own eyes.
By 1999, President Yeltsin's ill-conceived privatization had enabled a small clique of predatory insiders to plunder Russia's most valuable assets. The corruption generated by this widespread looting penetrated every corner of the country and it eventually created a Mafia-style economic system that threatened the stability of Russia itself.
During the old Cold War, the KGB was a state within a state. In Putin's time, the KGB now rechristened FSB, is the state. The Soviet Union had one KGB officer for every 428 citizens. In 2004, Putin's Russia had one FSB officer for every 297 citizens.

Nu mai cugeta, nu mai vorbi, nu te mai împotmoli în cele lumeşti mai mult decât este nevoie. Dar aminteşte-ţi totodată că roata ce se află cu totul în aer nu se poate rostogoli.

Croatian President Franjo Tudjman had long dreamed of establishing Croatia as an independent country. The Croatian-Serbian war began with irregulars and local incidents, and escalated rapidly to full-scale fighting. In August 1991, an obscure Yugoslav Army lieutenant colonel named Ratko Mladic joined his regular forces with the local irregulars—groups of young racists and thugs who enjoyed beating up Croats—and launched an attack on Kijevo, an isolated Croat village in the Serb-controlled Krajina. There had been fighting prior to Kijevo, but this action, backed fully by Belgrade, “set the pattern for the rest of the war in Croatia: JNA [Yugoslav] artillery supporting an infantry that was part conscript and part locally-recruited Serb volunteers.”12 Within weeks, fighting had broken out across much of Croatia. The JNA began a vicious artillery assault on Vukovar, an important Croat mining town on the Serbian border. Vukovar and the region around it, known as eastern Slavonia, fell to the Serbs in mid-November, and Zagreb was threatened, sending Croatia into panic. (The peaceful return of eastern Slavonia to Croatia would become one of the central issues in our negotiations in 1995.) After exhausting other options, the European Community asked the former British Foreign Secretary Lord Carrington to take on the task of bringing peace to Yugoslavia. Carrington, an urbane man of legendary integrity, told me later that he had never met such terrible liars in his life as the peoples of the Balkans. As the war in Croatia escalated and Vukovar crumbled under Serb shells, Carrington put forward a compromise plan
