Only after making intelligent and thorough use of his human powers had he trusted himself to the divine will, thereby clarifying for us the meaning of at-tawakkul ala Allah (reliance on God, trusting oneself to God): responsibly exercising all the qualities (intellectual, spiritual, psychological, sentimental, etc.) each one of us has been granted and humbly remembering that beyond what is humanly possible, God alone makes things happen. Indeed, this teaching is the exact opposite of the temptation of fatalism: God will act only after humans have, at their own level, sought out and exhausted all the potentialities of action. That is the profound meaning of this Quranic verse: “Verily never will God change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.”1

La remise confiante en Dieu (at-tawakkul) est pour les gens du commun, car quans tu confies tes affaires à Dieu, tu t'en remets à Lui, en tant qu'il est le plus savant et le bienveillant, et ce, afin qu'il s'occupe de tes affaires et que tu t'épargne toute anxiété.Tout cela, selon les gens de l'élite spirituelle, revient à s'illusionner sur sa propre capacité, et à s'appuyer en réalité sur les causes secondes. En effet, tu abandonnes les causes secondes, pour t'en remettre à Dieu, mais en fait, cette attitude a simplement remplacé les causes secondes. C'est comme si tu restais attaché à ce que tu as refusé en croyant etre indépendant des causes secondes. En réalité la véritable remise confiante en Dieu, selon l'élite spirituelle, consiste à purifier le coeur du processus causal qui produit l'abandon confiant à Dieu. Pour ce faire, il faut savoir avec certitude que Dieu n'a rien négligé. Il a créé et décrété toute chose. Si des différences semblent apparaitre avec ce que dit la raison humaine, ou si ce que l'on perçoit semble confus, ou si les normes habituelles semblent boulversées, il faut seulement se souvenir que Dieu dirige tout, et c'est Lui qui amène Ses décrets à se réaliser au moment qu'il a fixé. Celui qui s'en remet à Dieu avec confiance se dispense du fardeau consistant à réfléchir aux causes et à analyser. Paisiblement, il s'en remet à ce qui a déja été décidé par Dieu...

First of all, I've always maintained that we can never truly change people. Even in the Islamic belief, hidayah or guidance comes only from God. We do our part to educate, to inform, to encourage, but the end result is surrendered entirely for God to decide.

Have you ever wondered why one person recovers from an illness while another person, despite taking the same treatment, does not? Have you ever asked yourself why intelligent people often seem less fortunate and unhappier? Perhaps it is because they think too much and place too much importance on causes rather than the One who causes all things. The answer is simple: in this life, if you try to do everything by yourself, you will fail and exhaust both your mind and your body. Simple example: try to breathe consciously; practice the task of breathing. In a few moments, you will struggle, your breath will stop, and you will start to suffocate. But why? Why did that happen to you? The answer is simple: because breathing is not your task. There are many things in this life that are not your responsibility, and when you try to handle them yourself, you will fail and end up making things worse.  Understand that all your problems and deprivations stem from trying to force things to happen instead of letting them unfold naturally. A skilled fisherman only prepares the bait and the fishing rod and chooses the right place and time. After casting his line, he immediately relaxes. This is because he knows his part of the task is done and the rest is up to Allah, as Allah said in the Quran: "And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him]" (Quran 3:159). But you, on the other hand, throw the bait and then jump into the water and try so hard to force the fish to eat your bait, and guess what? No matter how hard you try, you only end up scaring the fish away. In the end, you are exhausted with wet clothes returning home empty-handed. Now, instead of chasing after your goals (whether it's solving a problem or fulfilling a wish) and seeing them constantly elude you, try standing back, relaxing like the experienced fisherman, and leaving the matter to Allah to handle it divinely. If you succeed in this step, you will feel a sense of peace and relief, as if a heavy burden has been lifted off your shoulders.  Your practical mind will still try to interfere from time to time, attempting to impose its own solutions and thinking of strategies and causes, but resist this urge and do not intervene. You may also hear a voice in your head saying, "Who are you for Allah to solve your problem and fulfill your wish? You are a sinner and negligent, Allah will not help you." This is where the final and crucial step comes in to silence that voice which is: seeking forgiveness. As the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever continually seeks forgiveness, Allah will make for him a way out of every distress and a relief from every anxiety, and will provide for him from where he does not expect." And as God said in the Quran: "Seek forgiveness from your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver. He will send rain from the sky upon you in continuing showers and give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers" (Quran 71:10-12).   The current feeling of peacefulness and relief you just felt after reading this short introduction stems from an Islamic concept called Tawakkul, which simply means reliance on Allah.
