He who is not afraid of death, enters a house engulfed in flames; he who is not afraid of death, jumps without hesitation into a turbulent flood; he who is not afraid of death, charges into a dense hail of bullets; he who is not afraid of death, fights unarmed against thousands of armored titans; in summary, he who does not fear death is the only one who can do something for others, bleed for others, and has, at the same time, the only happiness, the only desirable good in this world: undisturbed peace of heart.
Philipp Mainländer
If I were to give a summary of the tendency of our times, I would say, Quantity. The multitude, the mass spirit, dominates everywhere, destroying quality. Our entire life — production, politics, and education — rests on quantity, on numbers. The worker who once took pride in the thoroughness and quality of his work, has been replaced by brainless, incompetent automatons, who turn out enormous quantities of things, valueless to themselves, and generally injurious to the rest of mankind. Thus quantity, instead of adding to life’s comforts and peace, has merely increased man’s burden.
Emma Goldmann (Anarchism and Other Essays)
SUMMARY—START WITH HEART Here’s how people who are skilled at dialogue stay focused on their goals—particularly when the going gets tough. Work on Me First, Us Second • Remember that the only person you can directly control is yourself. Focus on What You Really Want • When you find yourself moving toward silence or violence, stop and pay attention to your motives. • Ask yourself: “What does my behavior tell me about what my motives are?” • Then, clarify what you really want. Ask yourself: “What do I want for myself? For others? For the relationship?” • And finally, ask: “How would I behave if this were what I really wanted?” Refuse the Fool’s Choice • As you consider what you want, notice when you start talking yourself into a Fool’s Choice. • Watch to see if you’re telling yourself that you must choose between peace and honesty, between winning and losing, and so on. • Break free of these Fool’s Choices by searching for the and. • Clarify what you don’t want, add it to what you do want, and ask your brain to start searching for healthy options to bring you to dialogue.

SUMMARY OF YOUR AIDS TO HEALTH • Find out what it is that heals you. Realize that correct directions given to your subconscious mind will heal your mind and body. • Develop a definite plan for turning over your requests or desires to your subconscious mind. • Imagine the end desired and feel its reality. Follow it through, and you will get definite results. • Decide what belief is. Know that belief is a thought in your mind and that what you think you create. • It is foolish to believe in sickness or in anything that will hurt or harm you. Believe in perfect health, prosperity, peace, wealth, and divine guidance. • Great and noble thoughts upon which you habitually dwell become great acts. • Apply the power of prayer therapy in your life. Choose a certain plan, idea, or mental picture. Unite mentally and emotionally with that idea. As you remain faithful to your mental attitude, your prayer will be answered. • Always remember, if you really want the power to heal, you can have it through faith, which means a knowledge of the working of your conscious and subconscious mind. Faith comes with understanding. • Blind faith means that a person may get results in healing without any scientific understanding of the powers and forces involved. • Learn to pray for your loved ones who may be ill. Quiet your mind. Your thoughts of health, vitality, and perfection operating through the one universal subjective mind will be felt and made manifest in the mind of your loved
Joseph Murphy (The Power of Your Subconscious Mind (GP Self-Help Collection Book 4))
Another simile is that of the man who was born and raised in a prison and who has never set foot outside. All he knows is prison life. He would have no conception of the freedom that is beyond his world. And he would not understand that prison is suffering. If anybody suggested that his world was dukkha, he would disagree, for prison is the limit of his experience. But one day he might find the escape tunnel dug long ago that leads beyond the prison walls to the unimaginable and expansive world of real freedom. Only when he has entered that tunnel and escaped from his prison does he realize how much suffering prison actually was, and the end of that suffering, escaping from jail is happiness. In this simile the prison is the body, the high prison walls are the five senses, and the relentless demanding prison guard is one's own will, the doer. The tunnel dug long ago, through which one escapes, is called jhana [meditation] (as at AN IX, 42). Only when one has experienced jhana does one realize that the five-sense world, even at its best, is really a five-walled prison, some parts of it is a little more comfortable but still a jail with everyone on death row! Only after deep jhana does one realize that "will" was the torturer, masquerading as freedom, but preventing one ever resting happily at peace. Only outside of prison can one gain the data that produces the deep insight that discovers the truth about dukkha. In summary, without experience of jhana, one's knowledge of the world is too limited to fully understand dukkha, as required by the first noble truth, and proceed to enlightenmen.

Howe's first object is, partly by threats and partly by promises, to terrify or seduce the people to deliver up their arms and receive mercy. The ministry recommended the same plan to Gage, and this is what the tories call making their peace, "a peace which passeth all understanding" indeed! A peace which would be the immediate forerunner of a worse ruin than any we have yet thought of. Ye men of Pennsylvania, do reason upon these things! Were the back counties to give up their arms, they would fall an easy prey to the Indians, who are all armed: this perhaps is what some Tories would not be sorry for. Were the home counties to deliver up their arms, they would be exposed to the resentment of the back counties who would then have it in their power to chastise their defection at pleasure. And were any one state to give up its arms, that state must be garrisoned by all Howe's army of Britons and Hessians to preserve it from the anger of the rest. Mutual fear is the principal link in the chain of mutual love, and woe be to that state that breaks the compact. Howe is mercifully inviting you to barbarous destruction, and men must be either rogues or fools that will not see it. I dwell not upon the vapors of imagination; I bring reason to your ears, and, in language as plain as A, B, C, hold up truth to your eyes.
Thomas Paine (The Crisis, #1 (Annotated with an Introduction and Summary))
Later we will look in more detail at how the Long Telegram and NSC-68 should shape the plan to destroy our jihadist enemies today, but for now consider this passage from Kennan’s original secret cable:         In summary, we have here a political force committed fanatically to the belief that with [the] U.S. there can be no permanent modus vivendi[,] that it is desirable and necessary that the internal harmony of our society be disrupted, our traditional way of life be destroyed, the international authority of our state be broken. . . . Kennan was writing about the USSR, but this description of a fanatical enemy incapable of living in peace with America applies word for word to the jihadist organizations behind all the major terrorist atrocities from 9/11 to the San Bernardino massacre.
Sebastian Gorka (Defeating Jihad: The Winnable War)
In my travels I have encountered worship styles that are so varied. Lately I have been thinking of the loud nature of much worship in contemporary churches (both preaching and song). Whilst not being opposed to this style I have found that at times it has been draining. It may be my inner introvert or it may simply just be that the season of loud is over for me at this time. Either way it seems that my heart yearns for the calm, the gentle, the peaceful. It reminds me of verses in Kings that speak of Elijah seeking God. In summary: The winds came. God was not in that wind. The earth shook. God was not in that shaking. The fire came. God was not in that fire. God was in the still small voice.
David Holdsworth
Oftentimes, life leads a person on a quest of contemplative knowledge.  Each person experiences this at some point or another during a lifetime seeking only the deepest of answers to the deepest of questions.  This contemplation is based on the eternal question of faith versus destiny.  Is mankind led by a road which twists and turns forcing one to one’s predetermined destiny?  Or is mankind the captain of its own fate, steering through the lakes and the streams searching through the unknown precepts of life making a path toward the ocean of self-acceptance and inner peace. What is ‘beginner’s luck’?  What are the explanations of some of the eternal burning

In summary then, Jesus is the foundation stone of our peace. He bridges the gap between God and man.The Scriptures say,“He is our peace.” And what wonderful benefits are ours: forgiveness (no more shame or guilt because of the past), the continuous assurance of God’s presence in our lives, and more to the point of this book, His peace—the gift that is given to those who begin to follow the Master.

Summary Let us recap the five steps at this time. 1)      Step One After a long stressful day it can be difficult to memorize. In this step we are resting our minds in the Lord. Although some good tips for long-term health benefits were stated for memorizing we will briefly summarize the short-term. It is good however to apply the long-term things as well seeing that meditating on the word of God is a lifelong commitment. But in the first step we are seeking to bring our minds to a place of peace. 2)      Step Two Although having a peaceful mind may help us with our goal, if we do not have a peaceful place to seek the Lord, we can easily be distracted. Therefore it is good to choose a secret place and hide away with the Lord. A place that is free of distractions, and not associated with work of any kind. In this step we are making our way to hide away with God one-on-one and put out all distractions around us. 3)      Step Three In this step we are meditating on the presence of God while in the secret place. We will continue to rest our minds in Christ as we forget about everything else. Then as we meditate on His presence we prepare for step four.

In his will, Washington left strict orders that all the slaves he owned outright were to be freed after his wife's death. Older slaves, particularly his retired personal servant William Lee, with him through war and peace, were to be cared for the rest of their lives. Younger slaves whose family could not support them were to remain in service until age twenty-five. The youngsters were to be taught to "read & write; and to be brought up to some useful occupation".   More than $10,000 was eventually paid from Washington's estate in pensions to former slaves.   Of the nine early presidents who owned slaves, he was the only one to set his slaves free. This final act is perhaps the best summary of his greatness. While other men talked of liberty, Washington took action to bring it about.

You can’t let recognition be your motivation. To find pride in yourself and in what you do, you have to define success as the peace of mind that comes with knowing you did your best.

Peace. Warm yourself, warrior, while I tell you of peace. History is unerring, and even the least observant mortal can be made to understand, through innumerable repetition. Do you see peace as little more than the absence of war? Perhaps, on a surface level, it is just that. But let me describe the characteristics of peace, my young friend. A pervasive dulling of the senses, a decadence afflicting the culture, evinced by a growing obsession with low entertainment. The virtues of extremity — honour, loyalty, sacrifice — are lifted high as shoddy icons, currency for the cheapest of labours. The longer peace lasts, the more those words are used, and the weaker they become. Sentimentality pervades daily life. All becomes a mockery of itself, and the spirit grows… restless. Is this a singular pessimism? Allow me to continue with a description of what follows a period of peace. Old warriors sit in taverns, telling tales of vigorous youth, their pasts when all things were simpler, clearer cut. They are not blind to the decay all around them, are not immune to the loss of respect for themselves, for all that they gave for their king, their land, their fellow citizens. The young must not be abandoned to forgetfulness. There are always enemies beyond the borders, and if none exist in truth, then one must be fashioned. Old crimes dug out of the indifferent earth. Slights and open insults, or the rumours thereof. A suddenly perceived threat where none existed before. The reasons matter not — what matters is that war is fashioned from peace, and once the journey is begun, an irresistible momentum is born. The old warriors are satisfied. The young are on fire with zeal. The king fears yet is relieved of domestic pressures. the army draws its oil and whetstone. Forges blast with molten iron, the anvils ring like temple bells. Grain-sellers and armourers and clothiers and horse-sellers and countless other suppliers smile with the pleasure of impending wealth. A new energy has gripped the kingdom, and those few voices raised in objection are quickly silenced. Charges of treason and summary execution soon persuade the doubters. Peace, my young warrior, is born of relief, endured in exhaustion, and dies with false remembrance. False? Ah, perhaps I am too cynical. Too old, witness to far too much. Do honour, loyalty and sacrifice truly exist? Are such virtues born only from extremity? What transforms them into empty words, words devalued by their overuse? What are the rules of the economy of the spirit, that civilization repeatedly twists and mocks? Withal of the Third City. You have fought wars. You have forged weapons. You have seen loyalty, and honour. You have seen courage and sacrifice. What say you to all this?" "Nothing," Hacking laughter. "You fear angering me, yes? No need. I give you leave to speak your mind." "I have sat in my share of taverns, in the company of fellow veterans. A select company, perhaps, not grown so blind with sentimentality as to fashion nostalgia from times of horror and terror. Did we spin out those days of our youth? No. Did we speak of war? Not if we could avoid it, and we worked hard at avoiding it." "Why?" "Why? Because the faces come back. So young, one after another. A flash of life, an eternity of death, there in our minds. Because loyalty is not to be spoken of, and honour is to be endured. Whilst courage is to be survived. Those virtues, Chained One, belong to silence." "Indeed. Yet how they proliferate in peace! Crowed again and again, as if solemn pronouncement bestows those very qualities upon the speaker. Do they not make you wince, every time you hear them? Do they not twist in your gut, grip hard your throat? Do you not feel a building rage—" "Aye. When I hear them used to raise a people once more to war.

1. Imagine that you’re surrounded by a warm and loving light. Feel your heart expand far beyond you and become one with this love. As you bring your heart back to its normal size, feel the energy concentrate itself inside your chest. It is an unstoppable, loving force that wants to give itself away.   2. Focus on the person who has triggered your anger. If they are not physically in front of you, visualize them and send all that love within you directly to them. Hold nothing back, just as you would expel a deep breath.  3. Follow the love as it leaves your chest. When it enters the other person at their solar plexus, feel it enter them. Do not just watch. Take action and embrace the sense that you're one with them. You're one with that love. Relax and feel surrounded by that love. It will return all the energy you gave away and fill you up with peace.   You concentrate, transmit the force, and allow it to sink into the individual who has wronged you as well as feeling it yourself. Through this you transmit love from a higher place in our world, a higher force. You accept the injustice and hold the power to move on. No one can stop you now. If you're struggling, picture the person without a face to allow you to focus on the task instead of that person. With the tool of Active Love, you disarm your target from holding any power over you and your life… That’s true freedom

a seven-letter Latin abbreviation that was as widely used in antiquity as “R.I.P.” (“Rest in Peace,” itself from the Latin requiescat in pace) has been in the modern world. The abbreviation is “n.f. f. n.s. n.c.” Translated, it provides a most trenchant summary of the materialist views endorsed and promoted by Epicurus, Lucretius, and their followers: non fui, fui, non sum, non curo—“I was not. I was. I am not. I care not.
Bart D. Ehrman (Heaven and Hell: A History of the Afterlife)
What I will argue is that, throughout the New Testament, faith, as a practice, is about faithfulness even to the point of suffering and death; love, as a practice, has a distinctive, Christlike shape of siding with the weak and eschewing domination in favor of service; and hope, as a practice, means living peaceably (which includes nonviolently) and making peace. Thus the summary triad “faithfulness, love, and peace” is appropriate.
Michael J. Gorman (The Death of the Messiah and the Birth of the New Covenant: A (Not So) New Model of the Atonement)
If I say the bad news, I can win applause over the planet: Man is the scourge of the planet, and he was born a scourge, just a few thousand years ago. But the news I am bringing is much different: Man was NOT born a few thousand years ago and he was NOT born a scourge. For this news I am condemned. Man was born MILLIONS of years ago, and he was not more a scourge than lions and hawks or squids. He lived AT PEACE with the world…for MILLIONS of years. That doesn’t mean he was a saint. That doesn’t mean he walked the earth like a buddha. It means he lived as harmlessly as a hyena or a shark or a rattlesnake. It is not MAN who is the scourge of the world. It’s a single culture. One culture out of hundreds of thousands of cultures. OUR culture. We don’t have to change HUMANKIND in order to survive. We only have to change a single culture. It is not an easy task, but it is not an impossible one. Here is my good news: WE ARE NOT HUMANITY. Can you feel the liberation in these words? I’m sure they seem bizarre, whisper them to yourself. I want you to understand what these four words are. They are a summary of all that was forgotten during the Great Forgetting. I mean that quite literally. At the end of the Great Forgetting, when the people of our culture began to build civilization in earnest, those four words were unthinkable. We forgot that we are a single culture and came to think of ourselves as humanity itself. All the intellectual and spiritual foundations of our culture were laid by people who believed absolutely that we are humanity itself. Socrates believed it. Plato believed it. Buddha believed it. Confucius believed it. Moses, Hesus, Thomas Aquinas, Copernicus, Hume, Marx, Kant, they all believed it. Why would it be such a bad thing if we were humanity? If we were humanity itself, then all the terrible things we say about humanity would be true- and that would be very bad news. If we were humanity itself, then all our destructiveness would belong not to one misguided culture but to humanity itself. But we are not humanity. We are just one culture, out of hundreds of thousand that lived their vision on this planet and had a song. It is not humanity that needs changing, it is just us.
Daniel Quinn (The Story of B (Ishmael, #2))
When in the natural course of human affairs, the leaders of the nations of the earth fail in their duty to; Protect the dignity of its inhabitants, Preserve the health of the environment, Prevent the over accumulation of wealth to the elite and, Provide the necessary means to settle disputes among nations. Then it becomes incumbent upon the peoples of the earth to take as their right, a greater part in the governing of their respective jurisdictions. The main purpose of government is to ensure the natural rights of all people in this generation and the generations that follow, in order to provide, but not limited to, an equal opportunity for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These are not the sole rights of any country, group, or person, and when a leader, body, or committee takes for themselves a greater share in order to deprive another group, person, or generation, then by necessity the people shall assemble and overturn any decision or policy that is proven to be inequitable. Our Creator has provided a guideline for the laws governing the affairs of men. The summary of which would be the outward expression of earnest affection for your Creator and your neighbor. Bearing one another's burden as a reasonable service. These leading to a lasting peace between all men. Natural law has provided a clear example of fair and balanced systems in the natural world. Any system of government should be modeled around the premise that the fitness of the system requires balance at every level of the hierarchy. With no concentration of power above that which is necessary to provide reasonable service to the community, and no allocation of resources beyond that which is necessary to the sustainable balance of any particular part of the system. With great care and attention given to preserving an efficient and effective bureaucracy that is never allowed to grow without meaningful oversight, designed to prevent the corruption and waste that plagues most forms of government.

Jason Zink (Summary: The Virtue of Nationalism By Yoram Hazony)
Democracies, concessions by: Governments must be strong domestically to make concessions to foreigners and their interests.* When nations are internally divided, governments are often too weak to compromise with foreign opponents, even when they judge it in the interest of their state to do so. Democratic systems of government presuppose the primacy of domestic interests and competition among them; thus, democracy entails a certain level of internal division on even the least controversial issues. Not surprisingly, therefore, democracies find it peculiarly difficult to accommodate foreign interests and thus to avoid the slide toward open conflict with foreign states. *See Appeasement Democracies, diplomacy in: "There is a propensity that induces democracies to obey impulse rather than prudence and to abandon a mature design for the gratification of momentary passion." — Alexis de Tocqueville Democracies, unaggressive nature of: The thesis that democracies are inherently unaggressive will not withstand the scrutiny of history. In countries with a free parliament and a free press, legislators and journalists can arouse national passions and make it much more difficult for their government to place other interests ahead of ideological imperatives or to overlook insults to the national honor than is the case in autocratic systems of government. Passion is the most common, and at the same time the most tragic, cause of war; it is also a failing to which democracies are peculiarly susceptible. Democracies, unaggressive nature of: "It is a profound and dangerous illusion to believe that war is always made in the Cabinets of statesmen, and that more and direct popular participation of the crowd in foreign policy will always be a guarantee of peace. Alas! crowds have their own psychology, singularly unforseeable and dangerous, their fits of anger, their caprices, their anxieties, their summary and brutal enquiries." — H. Hauser, 1929, quoted by R. B. Mowat, 1936
