I owe it to truth to say and affirm without fear of error that the Mass codified by St. Pius V - and not invented by him, as some often say - expresses clearly these three realities: sacrifice, Real Presence, and the priesthood of the clergy . . . The established customs have not been made at random, they cannot be overthrown abruptly abolished with impunity.

Catholic history tells us the Holy Rosary has been prayed continually by Catholics since the 13th century thanks to St. Dominic who received this preferred prayer directly from Our Blessed Mother. St. Pope Pius V in the 16th century taught, “After having devised it (the Rosary), Dominic and his sons (the Dominicans) spread this form of prayer throughout the Church. The faithful welcomed it with fervor, were soon set on fire by this meditation and were transformed into other men; the darkness of heresy receded; the light of the faith reappeared . . .

You ask if St. Dominic was really the institutor of the Rosary, you declare yourselves perplexed and full of doubt upon the subject. But what account do you make of the decisions of so many Sovereign Pontiffs of Leo X., of Pius V., of Gregory XIII. , of Sixtus V., of Clement VIII. , of Alexander VII., of Innocent XL, of Clement XL, of Innocent XIII., of Benedict XII I., and of many others, who are all unanimous in declaring the Rosary to have been instituted by St. Dominic himself?

In many respects, the documents were a dead letter from the day they were promulgated, and there is no longer a great deal to gain from insisting that they mean one thing rather than another. What is needed is a clear restatement of authentic doctrine, and a reinstatement of traditional practices (particularly the Mass of St. Pius V), which could bring an end to the present chaos - even if it meant the departure of large numbers of those whose adherence to the Church is no more than nominal. My dear children, my dear brethren, today is the Feast of the Holy Pope, St. Pius V. We must thank God because he has given this Holy Pope for the Church. You know that it is by this Holy Pope that we now have the Sacrifice of the Mass as the Church, given in the name of Jesus Christ, has given us. And it is very important for the Church to maintain this Rite of the Sacrifice of the Mass as the Holy Pope, Pius V, has given us; to maintain this canonized, true Mass. The Mass is the heart of the Church; it is the heart of your school; it is the heart of the seminary.
