There are two arms of the spiral, one opposite the other, exactly 180 degrees apart. Notice that between the reflecting arms, the light goes very dark. The black-light spirals are rotating at 180 degrees to each other and 90 degrees to the white light. (We’ve seen that before in the swirling galaxy.) If you look right in the center, you can see that the two opposite arms are exactly 180 degrees to each other. Figure 8-30 shows where we’ve seen it before. Here a white-light spiral comes out in one direction, and 180 degrees from it another white-light spiral goes out in the opposite direction. The dark arms — the feminine ones — come out between the light ones. That explains why the black light between the light arms of the spiral is different from the blackness in the rest of space (see fig. 2-35), as scientists have discovered, because the black light within a spiral is the feminine energy, and the darkness out in space is Void, not the same. The scientists couldn’t quite understand why it was different.

To further simplify the matter, even if during this precise moment the scrutinized star were to core-collapse and become reborn as an invisible black hole, it would nonetheless – assuming averageness, as well as sufficient continuity of its gazer's lineage – persist as a celestial wonder under the watchful eye of one's prospective great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandchildren. Then quite plausibly several generations beyond the last. This of course, is taking into account only the nearest of them. The most remote star visible to the naked eye from earth is approximately 10,000 light years away – commonly known as Rho Cassiopeiae if you’re the curious sort – and is not only 450 times larger but 500,000 times brighter than our sun. Stars can likewise be squeezed into a collective ball – or globular cluster – allowing one’s eyes to telescope across 25,000 light years. Yet even this is relatively like yesterday if considering that the Andromeda (the nearest spiral galaxy to our own Milky Way) is also visible without optical aid in a moderately dark sky and projected to the earth’s surface as it was two-and-a-half million years ago – well before any human was around to gaze at all. If one were to then ponder the outer limits of actual telescopes, ocular time travel suddenly leaps forward – or more technically hindward – to as many as four-and-a-half billion years; which incidentally, is the approximate age of this planet itself. In any case, once glancing skyward one will tend to become unconsciously immersed into an unknowably distant past, even while experiencing a deepened fixation on the present. So too it is when becoming absorbed by the onset of a worthwhile story...

Our galaxy is surrounded by a cloud of about fifty nearby galaxies, known as our Local Group. Foremost among them is the Andromeda Galaxy, a beautiful spiral galaxy, and the only galaxy in our group larger than our own. Gravity is pulling the two toward each other, and in four billion years (before our Sun has died) they will collide and unite. With so much distance between the stars of each galaxy, this collision will do surprisingly little to upset the stars and their planets. Its main effect will be to disrupt the delicate spiral structures of the partners, probably merging into a more uniform elliptical galaxy about three times as large. Eventually (in hundreds of billions of years) all the other galaxies in our group will have merged in too, forming a single giant galaxy.28 Zooming further out, we see many more groups of galaxies, some with as many as a thousand members.29 Eventually these groups resolve into a larger structure: the cosmic web—long, thick threads of galaxies, called filaments. These filaments criss-cross space in a kind of three-dimensional network, as if someone took a random set of points in space and connected each to its nearest handful of neighbors. Where the filaments intersect, space is bright and rich with galaxies.30 Between such filaments are dark and empty expanses, known as cosmic voids. As far as we can tell, this cosmic web continues indefinitely. At the very least, it continues as far as we can see or go. It is these final limits on our knowledge and action that appear to set the ultimate scale in our universe. We have known for almost a century that our universe is expanding, pulling the groups of galaxies apart. And twenty years ago we discovered that this expansion is accelerating. Cosmologists believe this puts a hard limit on what we will ever be able to observe or affect.31 We can currently see a sphere around us extending out 46 billion light years in all directions, known as the observable universe. Light from galaxies beyond this sphere hasn’t yet had time to reach us.32 Next year we will see a little further. The observable universe will increase in radius by a single light year, and about 25 more galaxies will come into view. But on our leading cosmological theory, the rate at which new galaxies become visible will decline, and those currently more than 63 billion light years away will never become visible from the Earth. We could call the region within this distance the eventually observable universe.33 But much more importantly, accelerating expansion also puts a limit on what we can ever affect. If, today, you shine a ray of light out into space, it could reach any galaxy that is currently less than 16 billion light years away. But galaxies further than this are being pulled away so quickly that neither light, nor anything else we might send, could ever affect them.34

Baryonic matter continues to condense, though, to form the familiar disk shape of galaxies. Within these disks, many galaxies, including our own, form spiral arms which are moderately denser than their surroundings. And within these spiral arms, yet denser Giant Molecular Clouds form. Although denser than their surroundings, they are not very dense. A volume of a Giant Molecular Cloud the size of the Earth would have a mass of just 360 kilograms (kg), and if squashed down to a manageable size could be carried down the stairs by two strong movers. Still, Giant Molecular Clouds are dense enough that most of the hydrogen in them forms into hydrogen molecules (H2) consisting of two hydrogen atoms. That is why the clouds are called ‘molecular’. Within one such Giant Molecular Cloud, a smaller clump began to form, and the more matter there is in a given volume, the stronger its gravity, so the more matter is sucked in. This clump ultimately gave rise to our Solar System. The chemical composition of the Solar System suggests that the process got its initial nudge from the explosion of one or more nearby supernovae, which were themselves the product of massive, short-lived stars that formed in the same Giant Molecular Cloud as the Sun. In fact, hundreds to thousands of other stars, ranging from a few percent of the Sun’s mass to upwards of ten times the Sun’s mass formed in the same cloud.

The reason ordinary matter lies in a disk and not a small ball is the matter’s net rotation, which it inherited from the gas clouds that acquired angular momentum (momentum of rotation) in their formation. Cooling lowers resistance to collapse in one direction, but collapse in the two others is prevented or at least lessened by the centrifugal force of the rotation of the gas it contains. Without friction or some other force acting on it, a marble that you set in motion around a circular track will keep rolling forever. Similarly, once matter is rotating, it will keep its angular momentum until some torque acts on it or it can dissipate angular momentum along with energy. Because angular momentum is conserved, gaseous regions cannot collapse as efficiently in the radial direction (as defined by rotation) as in the vertical one. Though matter might collapse in the direction parallel to the axis of rotation, it won’t collapse in the radial direction unless angular momentum is somehow removed. This differential collapse is what gives rise to the relatively flat disk of the Milky Way, which we observe stretching across the sky. It is also what gives rise to the disks of most spiral galaxies.

Brent Tully realized we were more connected to our neighbors than anyone had realized; they redrew the boundaries of the galactic map after realizing that our supercluster was far more vast and in fact consisted of what had been four separate superclusters that all moved in the same gravitational rhythm. They dubbed the new supercluster “Laniakea,” Hawaiian for “immense heaven,” and we now believe it encompasses about one hundred thousand other galaxies that astronomers define as “nearby,” despite the fact that they stretch across more than 520 million light-years of outer space. Laniakea, in turn, is now understood to be part of the Pisces-Cetus Supercluster Complex, an enormous structure of about sixty superclusters that together stretch across a billion light-years. The Pisces-Cetus Supercluster Complex is what’s known as a “galaxy filament,” the largest structures known to exist in our universe, in which NASA now estimates there are about 200 billion galaxies stretching across 46 billion light-years.III (Each of those galaxies is estimated to have perhaps 100 million stars—although the largest, known as supergiants, can contain 100 trillion.)
