The best way to get quiet, other than the combination of extensive therapy, Prozac, and a lobotomy, is first to notice that the station is on. KFKD [K-Fucked] is on every single morning when I sit down at my desk. So I sit for a moment and then say a small prayer--please help me get out of the way so I can write what wants to be written. Sometimes ritual quiets the racket. Try it. Any number of things may work for you--an altar, for instance, or votive candles, sage smudges, small-animal sacrifices, especially now that the Supreme Court has legalized them.

Today, we live in a world that is more stressful than ever before. If you are having trouble staying focused, maintaining your personal relationships and keeping up at work, then Sage sticks can deliver several benefits for you. In order to deal with this stressful world, it is important to get rid of the negative energy around you. It's not a joint, and no, I'm not getting high,” I said. "This is a sage smudge stick. I'm cleansing the negative energy.

I’m going to light some sage to help clear any negativity traveling with you. When you breathe out, breathe out any anxiety or nerves that you may notice, anything that doesn’t feel good. Imagine tying kites to each negative thought or feeling and letting them float up into the air, letting them burn up in the atmosphere. Let go of possible tension in your jaw and your back and your stomach. Breathe it out. Let it go.” Margot heard a match strike and opened her eyes. Joan lit a bundle of sage. The shaman let the herb burn for a moment and blew it out. The bundle began to smoke, and a pleasant yet pungent smell took over the air. Joan performed a smudging ritual, circling the smoking sage around Margot’s head and body, cleansing and replenishing her energy. Feeling a lovely peacefulness, Margot closed her eyes and focused on her task. The next few minutes were incredible. Having Joan present helped Margot achieve a sensation she’d never known before. When Joan told her to start coming out of it and open her eyes, Margot didn’t want to. She could have stayed there for hours.

Sometimes ritual quiets the racket. Try it. Any number of things may work for you – an altar, for instance, or votive candles, sage smudges, small animal sacrifices, especially now that the Supreme Court has legalised them. (I cut out the headline the day this news came out and taped it above the kitty's water dish.)

In addition to the breathing meditation, here are some clearing techniques that are very effective. Find a few that work for you and do them with diligence. Wash your hands after your Reiki session and imagine that whatever you picked up is washing down the drain. Imagine you’re soaking your hands in a bucket of cool water. (This is very good right after a Reiki session if you can’t get the heat out of your hands.) Imagine that you’re breathing healthy, healing energy up from the ground and blowing the stale energy out through the top of your head or out of your mouth on the exhale. Imagine that a golden hoop goes over your head and down to your toes. Visualize that everywhere it touches, it takes negative energy out and replaces it with light. When it touches the ground, let the ground reabsorb it. (You can also go from the ground up to the sky.) Take a bath with sea salt or Epsom salts. Lavender and rosemary are good herbs to clear energy. You can add them right to your bathwater. Take a shower and imagine that the water is also clearing any negative energy with it. Smudge yourself by burning sage or incense. Clear your Reiki space often using this method. You can also use sage spray. I use sage spray on each client, the room, and myself at the end of a Reiki session. Kneel on the ground and then slowly lower your forehead to the ground in “child’s pose” from yoga. (This is great for emptying out the heart and clearing the third eye.) Spend time in nature. Fresh air and sunlight are highly beneficial. It’s best if you can get into the woods. Exercise—any kind is good. Breathing and sweating are great ways to clear yourself. Sit in a sauna or steam room. Meditate and engage in other spiritual practices. Give or receive some Reiki!

Light the smudge, breathe deep, from this sacred tobacco, cedar, sweetgrass, and sage, burn all jealousy and hatred from this earth. O sacred smoke, make the world and us whole again; we women, this is what we do: sew and smudge, make the ugly, beautiful.
