In fact, its proportions are better represented by a crépe or a tortilla. No, the Milky Way’s disk is not a sphere, but it probably began as one. We can understand the flatness by assuming the galaxy was once a big, spherical, slowly rotating ball of collapsing gas. During the collapse, the ball spun faster and faster, just as spinning figure skaters do when they draw their arms inward to increase their rotation rate. The galaxy naturally flattened pole-to-pole while the increasing centrifugal forces in the middle prevented collapse at midplane. Yes, if the Pillsbury Doughboy were a figure skater, then fast spins would be a high-risk activity. Any stars that happened to be formed within the Milky Way cloud before the collapse maintained large, plunging orbits. The remaining gas, which easily sticks to itself, like a mid-air collision of two hot marshmallows, got pinned at the mid-plane and is responsible for all subsequent generations of stars, including the Sun. The current Milky Way, which is neither collapsing nor expanding, is a gravitationally mature system where one can think of the orbiting stars above and below the disk as the skeletal remains of the original spherical gas cloud. This general flattening of objects that rotate is why Earth’s pole-to-pole diameter is smaller than its diameter at the equator. Not by much: three-tenths of one percent—about twenty-six miles. For years, exercise scientists have been convinced that the only way to increase mitochondrial density is with aerobic endurance training, but recent studies have proved otherwise. Not only is an increase in the size and number of mitochondria a proven adaptation to HIIT, but the mitochondrial benefit of HIIT goes way beyond size and number. For example, all your mitochondria contain oxidative enzymes, such as citrate synthase, malate dehydrogenase, and succinate dehydrogenase. These oxidative enzymes lead to improved metabolic function of your skeletal muscles—particularly by causing more effective fat and carbohydrate breakdown for fuel and also by accelerating energy formation from ATP. So more oxidative enzymes means that you have a higher capacity for going longer and harder. And it turns out that, according to an initial study on the effect of HIIT on oxidative enzymes, there were enormous increases in skeletal muscle oxidative enzymes in seven weeks in subjects who did four to ten thirty-second maximal cycling sprints followed by four minutes of recovery just three days a week. But what about HIIT as opposed to aerobic cardio? Another six-week training study compared the increase in oxidative enzymes that resulted from either: 1. Four to six thirty-second maximal-effort cycling sprints, each followed by four-and-a-half minutes of recovery, performed three days a week (classic HIIT training) or 2. Forty to sixty minutes of steady cycling at 65 percent VO2 max (an easy aerobic intensity) five days a week The levels of oxidative enzymes in the mitochondria in subjects who performed the HIIT program were significantly higher—even though they were training at a fraction of the volume of the aerobic group. How could this favorable endurance adaptation happen with such short periods of exercise? It turns out that the increased mitochondrial density and oxidative-enzyme activity from HIIT are caused by completely different message-signaling pathways than those created by traditional endurance training.

Ubrzo sam shvatio da u meni postoje dva Akropolja, dnevni i noćni. Prvi je bio analitičan, s vodičevom glavom. Provera plana, istraživanje strukture celine, dodirivanje kamenja, zamišljanje onog što je propalo - poput studije anatomije iskopane životinje.
Prvi pokušaji privikavanja, uspostavljanja ličnog odnosa prema spomeniku kulture. "Za sebe" sam izabrao Propileje i Partenon. Zbog njihove energije, mase i reda. Hram Nike je bio suviše filigranski da bih osetio njegovu kamenu materijalnost - pre je na mene ostavljao utisak uspešne kopije, Dobro urađenog zadatka na klasičnu temu. Najteže mi je bilo da uspostavim vezu s Erehtejonom. Portik karijatida ružile su metalne cevi podupirača koji su građevini oduzimali smisao i planiranu lakoću. Same karijatide, ubogaljene i lišene šarma, kao da su se zaustavile na pola puta između ljudskog oblika i stuba. Nad tamnim jezerom starih atinskih kultova ovaj jonski hram kao da govori o nemogućnosti povezivanja drevne vere s novim arhitektonskim izrazom.
Drugi Akropolj - noćni, upaljen na nebu, koji se u celosti prepušta pogledima. Sedao bih na Brdo Muza, kraj samog spomenika Filopapu. Odozdo, iz sirotinjske četvrti Plaka, dopirala je banalna, svakodnevna vreva. U mraku se sjajio kreč belih kuća. U vazduhu se dizao miris ovčetine, maslina i belog luka. Akropolj u vencu mirisa crnog luka. Levo, među drvećem, svake večeri izvođena je predstava 'Son et Lumiere'. Sofoklovi horovi plakali su čas na francuskom, čas na engleskom. Svetlost je iz noći izvlačila fragmente svetog brežuljka. Crveni sjaj reflektora imitirao je požare.
Tada je za mene Akropolj bio skulptura; ne arhitektonski kompleks, već skulptura. Ruinirana južna kolonada Partenona, nisko posečena stabla stubova izazivali su grč u mom srcu. Kamenje se borilo s napadom pustoši.
S estetskog plana Akropolj se u mojoj svesti prebacio na plan istorije. Nisam mogao da ponovim ni uzbuđenje, ni molitve humaniste iz prošlog veka.(...) Akropolj koji mi se nalazio pred očima, sveden na skelet, odran od tela, za mene je istovremeno bio delo volje, reda i haosa, umetnika i istorije, Perikla i Morosinija, Iktinoja i lupeža. I, dodirujući pogledom njegove rane i ožiljke, osetio sam kako se u meni mešaju divljenje i sažaljenje.

Gulls alight on whitewashed gables, creaking pagodas and dung-ripe stables; circle over towers and cavernous bells and over hidden squares where urns of urine sit by covered wells, watched by mule-drivers, mules and wolf-snouted dogs, ignored by hunchbacked makers of clogs; gather speed up the stoned-in Nakashima River and fly beneath the arches of its bridges, glimpsed from kitchen doors, watched by farmers walking high, stony ridges. Gulls fly through clouds of steam from laundries’ vats; over kites unthreading corpses of cats; over scholars glimpsing truth in fragile patterns; over bath-house adulterers; heartbroken slatterns; fishwives dismembering lobsters and crabs; their husbands gutting mackerel on slabs; woodcutters’ sons sharpening axes; candle-makers, rolling waxes; flint-eyed officials milking taxes; etoliated lacquerers; mottled-skinned dyers; imprecise soothsayers; unblinking liars; weavers of mats; cutters of rushes; ink-lipped calligraphers dipping brushes; booksellers ruined by unsold books; ladies-in-waiting; tasters; dressers; filching page-boys; runny-nosed cooks; sunless attic nooks where seamstresses prick calloused fingers; limping malingerers; swineherds; swindlers; lip-chewed debtors rich in excuses; heard-it-all creditors tightening nooses; prisoners haunted by happier lives and ageing rakes by other men’s wives; skeletal tutors goaded to fits; firemen-turned-looters when occasion permits; tongue-tied witnesses; purchased judges; mothers-in-law nurturing briars and grudges; apothecaries grinding powders with mortars; palanquins carrying not-yet-wed daughters; silent nuns; nine-year-old whores; the once-were-beautiful gnawed by sores; statues of Jizo anointed with posies; syphilitics sneezing through rotted-off noses; potters; barbers; hawkers of oil; tanners; cutlers; carters of night-soil; gate-keepers; bee-keepers; blacksmiths and drapers; torturers; wet-nurses; perjurers; cut-purses; the newborn; the growing; the strong-willed and pliant; the ailing; the dying; the weak and defiant; over the roof of a painter withdrawn first from the world, then his family, and down into a masterpiece that has, in the end, withdrawn from its creator; and around again, where their flight began, over the balcony of the Room of the Last Chrysanthemum, where a puddle from last night’s rain is evaporating; a puddle in which Magistrate Shiroyama observes the blurred reflections of gulls wheeling through spokes of sunlight. This world, he thinks, contains just one masterpiece, and that is itself.
