Martin is always telling me to put all of this behind me, to get on with my life. But the thing is, before Jesse, I never really had a life. I had a routine. I did things. But aside from the accident”—he gestured with his prosthetic arm—“nothing ever happened to me. But she happened. And it was like a train wreck. It was big and painful and beautiful and every second mattered. You know what Beaudelaire said about love? It’s ‘an oasis of horror in a desert of boredom.’ But it’s still an oasis. Our time together—that’s the story of my life. Everything before her was just the boring setup. Like the first hour of a miniseries, the part that’s just padding to stretch it out for three nights. And the time since she’s gone—that’s just been some sort of weird, dragged-out anticlimax. I can feel myself sitting in the audience watching my life and wondering, ‘Why isn’t this movie over?

ONCE YOU’VE HOOKED readers, your next task is to put your early chapters to work introducing your characters, settings, and stakes. The first 20-25% of the book comprises your setup. At first glance, this can seem like a tremendous chunk of story to devote to introductions. But if you expect readers to stick with you throughout the story, you first have to give them a reason to care. This important stretch is where you accomplish just that. Mere curiosity can only carry readers so far. Once you’ve hooked that sense of curiosity, you then have to deepen the pull by creating an emotional connection between them and your characters. These “introductions” include far more than just the actual moment of introducing the characters and settings or explaining the stakes. In themselves, the presentations of the characters probably won’t take more than a few scenes. After the introduction is when your task of deepening the characters and establishing the stakes really begins. The first quarter of the book is the place to compile all the necessary components of your story. Anton Chekhov’s famous advice that “if in the first act you have hung a pistol on the wall, then in the following one it should be fired” is just as important in reverse: if you’re going to have a character fire a gun later in the book, that gun should be introduced in the First Act. The story you create in the following acts can only be assembled from the parts you’ve shown readers in this First Act. That’s your first duty in this section. Your second duty is to allow readers the opportunity to learn about your characters. Who are these people? What is the essence of their personalities? What are their core beliefs (even more particularly, what are the beliefs that will be challenged or strengthened throughout the book)? If you can introduce a character in a “characteristic moment,” as we talked about earlier, you’ll be able to immediately show readers who this person is. From there, the plot builds as you deepen the stakes and set up the conflict that will eventually explode in the Inciting and Key Events. Authors sometimes feel pressured to dive right into the action of their stories, at the expense of important character development. Because none of us wants to write a boring story, we can overreact by piling on the explosions, fight sequences, and high-speed car chases to the point we’re unable to spend important time developing our characters. Character development is especially important in this first part of the story, since readers need to understand and sympathize with the characters before they’re hit with the major plot revelations at the quarter mark, halfway mark, and three-quarters mark. Summer blockbusters are often guilty of neglecting character development, but one enduring exception worth considering is Stephen Spielberg’s Jurassic Park. No one would claim the film is a leisurely character study, but it rises far above the monster movie genre through its expert use of pacing and its loving attention to character, especially in its First Act. It may surprise some viewers to realize the action in this movie doesn’t heat up until a quarter of the way into the film—and even then we have no scream-worthy moments, no adrenaline, and no extended action scenes until halfway through the Second Act. Spielberg used the First Act to build suspense and encourage viewer loyalty to the characters. By the time the main characters arrive at the park, we care about them, and our fear for their safety is beginning to manifest thanks to a magnificent use of foreshadowing. We understand that what is at stake for these characters is their very lives. Spielberg knew if he could hook viewers with his characters, he could take his time building his story to an artful Climax.

There are streaming media devices like Roku, Kodi, or Amazon’s Fire TV Stick that allow you to access most of the same programs that you normally get through a cable subscription. Each of these devices gives you access to thousands of streaming channels. Some are free and some are premium. Even if you pay for two or three of these services, it still results in a significant cost savings. For instance, my setup is simple right now and only costs an average of $40 (as of March 2017), which is significantly less than the $130+ cable bill we once had: Netflix ($7 monthly) Amazon Prime ($99 per year or $8 monthly) Sling TV ($25 monthly) With Netflix and Amazon, you can watch most of the movies, documentaries, and premium TV shows that you love. And with Sling TV, you have access to your favorite network shows. It’s television-on-demand at its best, and more importantly, you don’t have to sit through commercials, which are distracting and reinforce negative spending habits.

Along with John and Judi, we took a big risk and started filming on the movie before we had a contract signed with MGM. There didn’t seem to be any choice. I imagined all the insurance underwriters across the world reacting to the phrase “live crocodiles.” Those two words would be enough to blow them right out of their cubicles. So we began shooting with our zoo crocodiles, but without signatures on the dotted line for the movie. A particular scene in the script--and a good example of an insurance man’s nightmare--had a crocodile trying to lunge into a boat. Only Steve’s expertise could make this happen, since the action called for Steve and me to be in the boat at the time. If the lunging crocodile happened to hook his head over the edge of the boat, he would tip us both into the water. That would be a one-way trip. “How are you going to work it?” I asked Steve. “Get the crocs accustomed to the dinghy first,” he said. “Then I’ll see if I can get them interacting with me while I’m in the boat.” First he tried Agro, one of our biggest male crocs. Agro was too wary of the boat. He’s a smart crocodile. I think he remembered back when he was captured. He didn’t want any of it. We decided to try with our friend Charlie. Charlie had been very close to ending up at a farm, his skin turned into boots, bags, and belts. He definitely had attitude. He spent a lot of his time trying to kill everything within range. Steve felt good about the possibility of Charlie having a go. Because he was filming a movie and not shooting a documentary, John had a more complex setup than usual, utilizing three thirty-five-millimeter cameras. Each one would film in staggered succession, so that the film magazine changes would never happen all at once. There would never be a time when film was not rolling. We couldn’t very well ask a crocodile to wait while a fresh mag was loaded into a camera. “You need to be careful to stay out of Charlie’s line of sight,” Steve said to me. “I want Charlie focusing only on me. If he changes focus and starts attacking you, it’s going to be too difficult for me to control the situation.” Right. Steve got no argument from me. Getting anywhere near those bone-crushing jaws was the furthest thing from my mind. I wasn’t keen on being down on the water with a huge saltwater crocodile trying to get me. I would have to totally rely on Steve to keep me safe.

In Grapes he worked with astonishingly low levels of light; consider the many night scenes and the shots in the deserted Joad homestead, where Tom and the preacher seem illuminated of a single candle, Tom silhouetted, Casy side-lit. The power of Ford (1895-1973) was rooted in strong stories, classical technique, and direct expression. Years of apprenticeship in low-budget silent films, many of them quickies shot on location, had steeled him against unnecessary setups and fancy camera work. There is a rigorous purity in his visual style that serves the subject well. The Grapes of Wrath contains not a single shot that seems careless or routine.
Roger Ebert (The Great Movies II)
It was on my third viewing of Henry Levin’s 1959 movie Journey to the Center of the Earth that I first stumbled upon an exercise I still use today. I had left the living room with the TV’s sound turned low, and when I returned for the “exciting conclusion” that the program’s announcer always promised, I came upon my favorite action sequence, in which the protagonists encounter a convincingly real-looking dimetrodon dinosaur. I had long wondered how the filmmakers pulled this off. With the sound down, I could more easily decode the techniques and effects at work. I noticed that the monstrous dinosaur was actually an iguana of some kind with a spine sail glued to its back. I figured out that the ruins of Atlantis were really carefully rendered matte paintings. I identified the camera setups that the filmmakers used to stage the sequence and make the audience believe every second of it. Thereafter, I lowered the sound whenever there was a scene that I wanted to study closely. With my own money, I bought a Bauer
Ron Howard (The Boys: A Memoir of Hollywood and Family)
The images on the tape had not been created mechanically, by a television camera or any similar device. Instead, the individual responsible had utilized his or her own psychological power to project them directly onto the videotape. Psychic photography, “thoughtography”. Psychic power had imprinted those images onto a blank tape that had been left in the VCR by pure chance. The Loop was a closed world. Going strictly by the physical laws that obtained there, such a thing was not possible. That wasn’t the way the set-up worked. Kaoru began to feel as if he were watching a movie—a well-made one, to be sure, but based on some pretty juvenile premises.

For a moment, it gave serial killer vibes. A house hidden from the street gave the perfect setup to drag a bitch’s body into the car without being seen. I’d seen way too many horror and mystery movies and shows.
Kimberly Brown (The Burial of a Player (Jareau Family, #3))
When you’re a director whose name people know, whose movies they go to see, in their millions, a guy who’s known as a family entertainer, a family guy – there’s a lot of money at stake. A lot of money. And it’s not just your brand, either. Marianne’s got her things going on, her public persona to protect. And they’ve got this set-up, the ranch, those kids – their kids, adopted kids – already. It’s always been her dream to have this big family . . .
Ellery Lloyd (The Club)
The movie in our mind is wonderful, but no one else knows their parts, their lines, or what it means to us. When the picture or movie fails to play out in real life, we feel disappointed. And sometimes that disappointment is severe and brings shame and hurt and anger with it. It’s a setup for us and for the people involved. Disappointment takes a toll on us and our relationships.
Brené Brown (Atlas of the Heart: Mapping Meaningful Connection and the Language of Human Experience)
In the early 1950s the Brattle Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts, tried something old. Like many another venue for productions of Shakespeare, Chekhov, and Shaw, the Brattle had become a film house in the early 1950s. But it was a film house unlike any other. It had a rear-screen projector, rather than the standard setup that beamed movies on a screen above the audience. And it had owners who believed that the past could be more alluring than the present.

Mr. Zelenskyy thinks he was assigned a movie project, titled "Foolish Brave President ". Shooting has started but it has no pack-up date, devastated cities, villages are the artificial movie setup, producer's money, so he doesn't care. There are no refugees also. 3 million citizens who fled are actually junior artists. millions of junior artists. There are working in this movie, 3 million have already returned home after playing their role. Shooting is also going live on telecast. He's glad to feel happy as the world media appreciates his acting, so throughout he's enjoying playing this role. And he's damn sure he will be entitled to each and every award. His character has deep emotions, touching drama, great actions, but the very important thing is completely missing, which is the main character of the leader. Diplomacy and citizens' safety policy !!!

the set-up of the fight tends to occur about one-quarter to one-third of the way into the story, with the touch-off coming out around the two-thirds or three-quarters mark.

This imaginary image can sometimes shift as the balance of the music shifts from side to side, which can be very disconcerting to the listener, especially if the speakers are placed far apart. As a result, film sound has always relied upon a third speaker channel in the center to keep the sound anchored. This format is called LCR, for Left, Center, Right, and it became a staple of multiplex movie theaters and high-end home video setups where the center speaker is located near or behind the screen. This third channel never caught on in consumer music circles however, mostly because people had a hard time finding a place for two speakers, let alone three.

How to Activate Roku on my TV? To activate Roku on your TV, connect it, follow on-screen instructions, and call 1-888-570-1595 for assistance. Roku is one of the most popular streaming devices used in homes today. It allows you to stream your favorite movies, shows, sports, and more using the internet. With Roku, you can turn any regular TV into a smart streaming device. If you just bought a Roku or have reset it to factory settings, you will need to activate it before you can start streaming. This guide will help you understand everything you need to know about how to activate Roku on your TV in a clear and simple way. What You Need Before Activating Roku Before we dive into the steps, make sure you have the following items ready: A Roku device or Roku-enabled TV A working TV with an HDMI port A stable internet connection, either WiFi or Ethernet A computer, tablet, or smartphone with access to the internet Your Roku remote control with batteries inserted Once you have all these items, you can proceed with setting up and activating your Roku. Step-by-Step Guide to Activate Roku on Your TV Step 1: Connect Your Roku Device First, plug your Roku device into your TV. Most Roku devices use an HDMI connection. If you have a Roku streaming stick, insert it directly into an HDMI port on the back or side of your TV. For other models like Roku Express or Roku Ultra, use the HDMI cable provided in the box. If your Roku device requires power, connect the power adapter to a wall outlet and plug it into the Roku device. Some Roku sticks get power from the TV itself through the USB port, but it is always better to use a wall outlet for a more stable power supply. Step 2: Turn On Your TV and Select the Correct HDMI Input After connecting your Roku, turn on your TV. Use your TV remote to change the input source to the HDMI port where your Roku is connected. You will now see the Roku welcome screen, which usually displays the Roku logo with a loading bar. Step 3: Set Up Your Roku Remote Your Roku remote should pair automatically with the device. If it does not, press and hold the pairing button inside the battery compartment until the light flashes. This will begin the pairing process. Once paired, use the remote to begin the setup process. Step 4: Choose Your Language and Region Use the Roku remote to select your preferred language. After selecting the language, you may also need to choose your location or region. Roku will use this information to provide the correct time zone and content. Step 5: Connect Roku to the Internet Next, you will be asked to connect Roku to the internet. Choose your WiFi network from the list of available networks. Enter the WiFi password when prompted. If the connection is successful, Roku will confirm it and may download the latest updates. This step may take a few minutes. For some Roku models that support Ethernet, you can connect a cable from your router to the Roku device for a wired connection. This is more stable and often faster than WiFi. Step 6: Wait for Roku to Update Once connected to the internet, your Roku device may automatically start updating its software. This process can take a few minutes. Let it finish updating. Your device may restart once or twice during this step. Do not unplug it during the update. Step 7: Link Roku to Your TV Remote If you have a Roku player with TV control features, Roku may guide you through setting up the remote to control your TV power and volume. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete this step. Step 8: Activate Your Roku Device Now comes the most important part: activating your Roku. You will see an activation code on your TV screen. The code will look something like AB123C or similar. Do not turn off your TV or press any buttons on the Roku remote during this step.

How to Activate Firestick Without a Remote To activate Firestick without a remote, use the Fire TV app or call 1-888-570-1595 for quick assistance. Amazon Firestick is one of the most popular streaming devices in the world. It allows you to watch thousands of movies, TV shows, and live channels from different apps. But what if you lose the Firestick remote or it stops working? Many people find themselves in this situation and wonder if they can still activate and use their Firestick without a remote. The good news is yes, you can activate your Firestick without a remote. It is possible using some simple methods and tools that are easy to set up. This guide will explain how to do it step by step, so you can start watching your favorite content even without the original Firestick remote. Understanding the Problem Before jumping into the solutions, let us understand what activation means in this case. When you set up a new Firestick or reset an old one, you need to go through the setup process. This includes choosing the language, connecting to Wi-Fi, signing in with your Amazon account, and installing apps. Normally, you do all of this using the Firestick remote. But if you do not have the remote, you cannot move through the on-screen menu. This becomes a challenge. However, with the help of the Fire TV app, a second device, and a few tricks, you can complete the activation without any problems. What You Need To activate Firestick without a remote, here are the things you will need: A smartphone or tablet with internet access The Fire TV app installed on your smartphone or tablet A second smartphone or a device that can create a mobile hotspot A working Wi-Fi connection With these four things, you can activate and control your Firestick even if the remote is lost or broken. Step 1: Download the Fire TV App The first step is to download the Fire TV app. This app is available for both Android and iPhone users. Go to the Play Store or the App Store and search for Fire TV. Install the app on your phone or tablet. Once installed, open the app. It will ask for permissions such as Bluetooth and location access. Allow these permissions for the app to work properly. You will now see a screen asking you to connect to a Fire TV device. But since the Firestick is not yet connected to Wi-Fi, it will not show up here yet. That is why we need to move to the next step. Step 2: Create a Mobile Hotspot The trick here is to connect your Firestick to the internet using a mobile hotspot with the same Wi-Fi network name and password it was last connected to. This only works if your Firestick was previously set up and connected to a Wi-Fi network. Use a second smartphone or device that can create a mobile hotspot. Turn on the hotspot feature and set the network name and password exactly the same as your old home Wi-Fi network that the Firestick was connected to. Make sure the spelling, uppercase and lowercase letters, and spaces are all exactly the same. This will trick the Firestick into thinking it is connecting to the same old network. Step 3: Power On the Firestick Now plug your Firestick into the TV and turn it on. Your TV should display the Firestick welcome screen. Wait a few moments for the Firestick to connect to the fake hotspot network you just created. Once the Firestick connects to the hotspot, it will appear on the Fire TV app on your first phone. Tap on the device name on the app, and it will ask you to enter a code shown on your TV screen. Type in the code using your phone.

Horror movies tend to start and end fast. They may have neither everyday life set-ups, nor codas; they just start and end. That abruptness makes us enter with no stability, and leave with none. No other genre does that. Horror films also have unhappy endings more often than any genre. Endings define themes, which makes horror movies have the darkest themes of any genre. Themes in other genres tend toward the instructive, telling us how to live. Horror films lean toward nihilism, believing there is no hope. What’s scarier than that?
