I live in two worlds. One is a world of books. I've been a resident of Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha County, hunted the white whale aboard the Pequod, fought alongside Napoleon, sailed a raft with Huck and Jim, committed absurdities with Ignatius J. Reilly, rode a sad train with Anna Karenina and strolled down Swann's Way. It's a rewarding world, but my second one is by far superior. My second one is populated with characters slightly less eccentric, but supremely real, made of flesh and bone, full of love, who are my ultimate inspiration for everything.

Books provide a handy shorthand when Roryβs mostly MIA father, Christopher, is first introduced to viewers. Christopherβs offer to buy Rory the Compact Oxford English Dictionary she covets is sincere; his lack of ability to follow through on his good intentions is Christopher in a nutshell.

If Lorelei could get through a few hours with her mother for Roryβs sake, I could get through dinner with Nico and his spawn. My uncle was bad, but Emily Gilmore made him look like a peach in comparison.

My phone buzzes on the nightstand for the tenth time today, but I ignore it. Instead, Iβm trying to focus on this Gilmore Girls episode, even though Iβve seen it a hundred times and I already know Rory will say or do something stupid.
