One question that has challenged me for some 50 years, is where did Ali “retire” after parting with Wallace in Singapore in 1862? Did he return to his home in Sarawak? Did he return to the spice island of Ternate, where Wallace said he had a family?

That's because true travel, the kind with no predetermined end, is one of the most selfish endeavors we can possibly undertake-an act in which we focus solely on our own fulfillment, with little regard to those we leave behind. After all, we're the ones venturing out into the big crazy world, filling up journals, growing like weeds. And we have the gall to think they're just sitting at home, soaking in security and stability.
It is only when we reopen these wrapped and ribboned boxes, upon our triumphant return home, that we discover nothing is the way we had left it before.

On a long flight, after periods of crisis and many hours of fatigue, mind and body may become disunited until at times they seem completely different elements, as though the body were only a home with which the mind has been associated but by no means bound. Consciousness grows independent of the ordinary senses. You see without assistance from the eyes, over distances beyond the visual horizon. There are moments when existence appears independent even of the mind. The importance of physical desire and immediate surroundings is submerged in the apprehension of universal values.
For unmeasurable periods, I seem divorced from my body, as though I were an awareness spreading out through space, over the earth and into the heavens, unhampered by time or substance, free from the gravitation that binds to heavy human problems of the world. My body requires no attention. It's not hungry. It's neither warm or cold. It's resigned to being left undisturbed. Why have I troubled to bring it here? I might better have left it back at Long Island or St. Louis, while the weightless element that has lived within it flashes through the skies and views the planet. This essential consciousness needs no body for its travels. It needs no plane, no engine, no instruments, only the release from flesh which circumstances I've gone through make possible.
Then what am I – the body substance which I can see with my eyes and feel with my hands? Or am I this realization, this greater understanding which dwells within it, yet expands through the universe outside; a part of all existence, powerless but without need for power; immersed in solitude, yet in contact with all creation? There are moments when the two appear inseparable, and others when they could be cut apart by the merest flash of light.
While my hand is on the stick, my feet on the rudder, and my eyes on the compass, this consciousness, like a winged messenger, goes out to visit the waves below, testing the warmth of water, the speed of wind, the thickness of intervening clouds. It goes north to the glacial coasts of Greenland, over the horizon to the edge of dawn, ahead to Ireland, England, and the continent of Europe, away through space to the moon and stars, always returning, unwillingly, to the mortal duty of seeing that the limbs and muscles have attended their routine while it was gone.

When we spoke about attempts to give a man in camp mental courage, we said that he had to be shown something to look forward to in the future. He had to be reminded that life still waited for him, that a human being waited for his return. But after liberation? There were some men who found that no one awaited them. Woe to him who found that the person whose memory alone had given him courage in camp did not exist any more! Woe to him who, when the day of his dreams finally came, found it so different from all he had longed for! Perhaps he boarded a trolley, traveled out to the home which he had seen for years in his mind, and only in his mind, and pressed the bell, just as he has longed to do in thousands of dreams, only to find that the person who should open the door was not there, and would never be there again.

So I close this long reflection on what I hope is a not-too-quaveringly semi-Semitic note. When I am at home, I will only enter a synagogue for the bar or bat mitzvah of a friend's child, or in order to have a debate with the faithful. (When I was to be wed, I chose a rabbi named Robert Goldburg, an Einsteinian and a Shakespearean and a Spinozist, who had married Arthur Miller to Marilyn Monroe and had a copy of Marilyn’s conversion certificate. He conducted the ceremony in Victor and Annie Navasky's front room, with David Rieff and Steve Wasserman as my best of men.) I wanted to do something to acknowledge, and to knit up, the broken continuity between me and my German-Polish forebears. When I am traveling, I will stop at the shul if it is in a country where Jews are under threat, or dying out, or were once persecuted. This has taken me down queer and sad little side streets in Morocco and Tunisia and Eritrea and India, and in Damascus and Budapest and Prague and Istanbul, more than once to temples that have recently been desecrated by the new breed of racist Islamic gangster. (I have also had quite serious discussions, with Iraqi Kurdish friends, about the possibility of Jews genuinely returning in friendship to the places in northern Iraq from which they were once expelled.) I hate the idea that the dispossession of one people should be held hostage to the victimhood of another, as it is in the Middle East and as it was in Eastern Europe. But I find myself somehow assuming that Jewishness and 'normality' are in some profound way noncompatible. The most gracious thing said to me when I discovered my family secret was by Martin, who after a long evening of ironic reflection said quite simply: 'Hitch, I find that I am a little envious of you.' I choose to think that this proved, once again, his appreciation for the nuances of risk, uncertainty, ambivalence, and ambiguity. These happen to be the very things that 'security' and 'normality,' rather like the fantasy of salvation, cannot purchase.

Zen has been called the "religion before religion," which is to say that anyone can practice, including those committed to another faith. And that phrase evokes that natural religion of our early childhood, when heaven and a splendorous earth were one. But soon the child's clear eye is clouded over by ideas and opinions, preconceptions and abstractions.
Not until years later does an instinct come that a vital sense of mystery has been withdrawn. The sun glints through the pines, and the heart is pierced in a moment of beauty and strange pain, like a memory of paradise. After that day, at the bottom of each breath, there is a hollow place filled with longing. We become seekers without knowing that we seek, and at first, we long for something "greater" than ourselves, something apart and far away.
It is not a return to childhood, for childhood is not a truly enlightened state. Yet to seek one's own true nature is "a way to lead you to your long lost home." To practice Zen means to realize one's existence moment after moment, rather than letting life unravel in regret of the past and daydreaming of the future. To "rest in the present" is a state of magical simplicity...out of the emptiness can come a true insight into our natural harmony all creation.
To travel this path, one need not be a 'Zen Buddhist', which is only another idea to be discarded like 'enlightenment,' and like 'the Buddha' and like 'God.

If one has been absent for decades from a place that one once held dear, the wise would generally counsel that one should never return there again.
History abounds with sobering examples: After decades of wandering the seas and overcoming all manner of deadly hazards, Odysseus finally returned to Ithaca, only to leave it again a few years later. Robinson Crusoe, having made it back to England after years of isolation, shortly thereafter set sail for that very same island from which he had so fervently prayed for deliverance.
Why after so many years of longing for home did these sojourners abandon it so shortly upon their return? It is hard to say. But perhaps for those returning after a long absence, the combination of heartfelt sentiments and the ruthless influence of time can only spawn disappointments. The landscape is not as beautiful as one remembered it. The local cider is not as sweet. Quaint buildings have been restored beyond recognition, while fine old traditions have lapsed to make way for mystifying new entertainments. And having imagined at one time that one resided at the very center of this little universe, one is barely recognized, if recognized at all. Thus do the wise counsel that one should steer far and wide of the old homestead.
But no counsel, however well grounded in history, is suitable for all. Like bottles of wine, two men will differ radically from each other for being born a year apart or on neighboring hills. By way of example, as this traveler stood before the ruins of his old home, he was not overcome by shock, indignation, or despair. Rather, he exhibited the same smile, at once wistful and serene, that he had exhibited upon seeing the overgrown road. For as it turns out, one can revisit the past quite pleasantly, as long as one does so expecting nearly every aspect of it to have changed.

Ah great goddess, don’t be angry with me, please. All that you say is true, how well I know. Look at my wise Penelope. She falls far short of you, your beauty, stature. She is mortal after all and you, you never age or die … Nevertheless I long—I pine, all my days— to travel home and see the dawn of my return. And if a god will wreck me yet again on the wine-dark sea, I can bear that too, with a spirit tempered to endure. Much have I suffered, labored long and hard by now in the waves and wars. Add this to the total— bring the trial on!

The pooka isn’t always wicked,” he said. “Sometimes it acts out of mischief. Playfulness.” She gave him a skeptical glance. “You call it playful for a creature to toss you on its back, fly up to the sky, and drop you into a ditch or bog?” “That’s one of the stories,” Rohan admitted with a grin. “But in other accounts, the pooka only wants to take you on an adventure … fly you to places you can only see in dreams. And then he returns you home.” “But the legends say that after the horse takes you on his midnight travels, you’re never the same.” “No,” he said softly. “How could you be?

Traveling is not only the art of getting lost, but true travelers, in a sense, never return home. If they do return, they never see home the same way they did before leaving. They begin to see the foreignness of home after experiencing being at home in other foreign lands.
Traveling, I have learned, is not all about the touristy and the beautiful places as we see them in tourist guides. Traveling can be frightening in many ways, most important of which is the realization of how much sadness, pain, impoverishment, and despair exist next to, behind, under, over, and above the mountains, the blue lakes, the pristine beaches, the highly rated hotels and restaurants, the well-designed museums and historic and cultural sites, the fancy shops that, in many places, most locals can neither access nor afford. There are places so sad that the fanciest building one can see there is the airport! There are other places where the airports are run down and depressing, but once you step out of the airport, you discover that such places are full of life, meaning, and physical and spiritual nourishment. There are countries, namely the developed countries, where everything looks shiny and perfect, yet as soon as you enter, you encounter so much loneliness, depression, hate, racism, and lifelessness. Things are never as they appear at first glance. Traveling leaves us with more questions than answers – it is so bittersweet."

What is the future of men who have
lost sight of the past?
Earl Hollsopple lived on the edge of civilization in a deserted shack for nearly forty years. His life was one beautiful night of stargazing after another, until a helicopter flies overhead, and exposing his meager world. It is a sign; it is time for him to return to civilization.
Unknowingly, Earl’s journey parallels another he had deeply repressed, and that is his return from the Vietnam War. The lone survivor of a plane crash, Earl waits for rescue that never came. He is left to find his way home alone.
On both his quests, old Earl and young Earl learn lessons of survival, overcoming isolation and handling conflicts; his travels teach him not just about himself, but humankind. Reaching pivotal points in both journeys, Earl meets fateful loves, leading to destinies that are ultimately intertwined.
Everything in life circles until we are able to answer the riddles that plaque man and humanity. Only until we take the journey, solve the problems of our own existence, do we find our way home.

The next morning I showed up at dad’s house at eight, with a hangover. All my brothers’ trucks were parked in front. What are they all doing here?
When I opened the front door, Dad, Alan, Jase, and Willie looked at me. They were sitting around the living room, waiting. No one smiled, and the air felt really heavy.
I looked to my left, where Mom was usually working in the kitchen, but this time she was still, leaning over the counter and looking at me too.
Dad spoke first. “Son, are you ready to change?”
Everything else seemed to go silent and fade away, and all I heard was my dad’s voice.
“I just want you to know we’ve come to a decision as a family. You’ve got two choices. You keep doing what you’re doing--maybe you’ll live through it--but we don’t want nothin’ to do with you. Somebody can drop you off at the highway, and then you’ll be on your own. You can go live your life; we’ll pray for you and hope that you come back one day. And good luck to you in this world.”
He paused for a second then went on, a little quieter.
“Your other choice is that you can join this family and follow God. You know what we stand for. We’re not going to let you visit our home while you’re carrying on like this. You give it all up, give up all those friends, and those drugs, and come home. Those are your two choices.”
I struggled to breathe, my head down and my chest tight. No matter what happened, I knew I would never forget this moment.
My breath left me in a rush, and I fell to my knees in front of them all and started crying.
“Dad, what took y’all so long?” I burst out.
I felt broken, and I began to tell them about the sorry and dangerous road I’d been traveling down. I could see my brothers’ eyes starting to fill with tears too.
I didn’t dare look at my mom’s face although I could feel her presence behind me. I knew she’d already been through the hell of addiction with her own mother, with my dad, with her brother-in-law Si, and with my oldest brother, Alan. And now me, her baby. I remembered the letters she’d been writing to me over the last few months, reaching out with words of love from her heart and from the heart of the Lord.
Suddenly, I felt guilty.
“Dad, I don’t deserve to come back. I’ve been horrible. Let me tell you some more.”
“No, son,” he answered. “You’ve told me enough.”
I’ve seen my dad cry maybe three times, and that was one of them. To see my dad that upset hit me right in the gut. He took me by my shoulders and said, “I want you to know that God loves you, and we love you, but you just can’t live like that anymore.”
“I know. I want to come back home,” I said.
I realized my dad understood. He’d been down this road before and come back home. He, too, had been lost and then found.
By this time my brothers were crying, and they got around me, and we were on our knees, crying. I prayed out loud to God, “Thank You for getting me out of this because I am done living the way I’ve been living.”
“My prodigal son has returned,” Dad said, with tears of joy streaming down his face.
It was the best day of my life. I could finally look over at my mom, and she was hanging on to the counter for dear life, crying, and shaking with happiness.
A little later I felt I had to go use the bathroom. My stomach was a mess from the stress and the emotions. But when I was in the bathroom with the door shut, my dad thought I might be in there doing one last hit of something or drinking one last drop, so he got up, came over, and started banging on the bathroom door. Before I could do anything, he kicked in the door. All he saw was me sitting on the pot and looking up at him while I about had a heart attack. It was not our finest moment.
That afternoon after my brothers had left, we went into town and packed up and moved my stuff out of my apartment.
“Hey bro,” I said to my roommate. “I’m changing my life. I’ll see ya later.” I meant it.

Camille heard the rustle of grass. She opened one eye and saw Oscar settling down beside her.
“We can spare a few minutes,” he said. She sat up and cradled her knees in her arms. He plucked a blade of grass and commenced peeling it down the center. They heard the Australian snoring from his spot a few yards away, completely hidden in a blanket of green.
“I guess we can spare more than a few minutes.” Oscar smiled and met her gaze, holding it a moment. She suddenly realized how horrible she must look-her hair, her clothes, her skin.
“Do you miss him?” he asked, not seeming to notice any of those things.
Camille uprooted a purple flower and a white daisy near it. “Of course I do. But I’m hoping with the stone I won’t have to very long.”
“Not your father, Camille. Randall.”
She took a deep breath, shocked she hadn’t thought of her fiancé for so long. How many days had it been? A full week, maybe more.
“Oh. Well…I suppose I do.”
Oscar raised an eyebrow and laughed at her clear lack of conviction.
Camille shrugged. “What? A lot has happened and right now getting back to San Francisco isn’t something I’m concerned about.”
Oscar nodded and chewed on the tip of his blade of grass.
“It’s not that Randall isn’t a perfectly good man,” she said, fiddling with the flowers in her hands. The roots crumbled dirt onto her lap. “He’s kind and caring and handsome and an excellent businessman.”
Oscar continued to nod.
“And he’ll make a fine husband, I’m sure,” she added, knowing he really was all those things. If only all of them combined could make up for what she didn’t feel while with him.
“I’m sure,” Oscar repeated. Had he been mocking her? She thought she had caught a trace of sarcasm. All this talk about Randall had her itching.
“Why do you ask?”
“Just wondered if you missed home,” Oscar answered and threw the mangled blade of grass behind him.
“Do you?” she asked, ashamed to her Oscar know how little she desired to return. He thought for a moment, tugging up another switch of grass and rolling it between his fingers.
“No,” he answered with stark certainty. “I have everything I’d miss right here.”
Every inch of Camille’s body smoldered under Oscar’s gentle, and so very forward, gaze. He’d miss her. She looked into his gray-blue eyes, rimmed by thick, honey-colored lashes-had they always been so full? The bridge of his nose crooked to the left slightly, perhaps broken in a fight after he’d moved from her father’s carriage house to a small apartment along the San Francisco harbor front. She’d never noticed the charming imperfection before.
She watched as his eyes traveled over her own features, touching on the wound by her temple and settling on the heart-shaped fullness of her lips.
Oscar held his piercing stare. “We probably won’t arrive home in time for your wedding.

But,” he added, “don’t have any illusions that by marrying me you will be happy. After we’re married, I’ll wander off as I please, visit whomever I like, attend parties, and travel around the world. But you will have to wait for me, shut up at home. Before I leave, I will glue strips of paper around the windows and doors and write my signature on them to assure myself when I return that not only did you stay inside, but you didn’t even look out the window. In our house, we shall only employ female servants, and if for some reason I must hire male servants, I will choose men who are so monstrously ugly that if you happen to look at them you will turn away in horror. I also don’t want you to remain beautiful because your beauty will then be my cross to bear. A wife shouldn’t be beautiful. She should be a saint and nothing else. Until you are old, you will continuously be pregnant or breastfeeding, and after only a few years you’ll become fat, shapeless, and exhausted, no longer able to arouse the temptation of any man. I, on the other hand, will remain slim, the same weight as I am now, six months shy of nineteen years old, and I shall roam and soar about the world secure that you’re waiting for me at home. I will have lovers, but my one true love will be you. Do not think that when you are fat and old that I will love you less. On the contrary, I will love you more because every time I look at you I will know that it was I who made you, the girl who was beauty itself, so ugly. That ugliness will be more mine than your beauty could ever be, and for this reason I will remain madly in love with you. The scar on your cheek pleases me more than your hair, more than your eyes, because those things were given to you by your mother, and the scar, instead, was given to you by me.

Damn, Mari, it’s cold!” Carrow chafed her arms. “I dig the whole Narnian vibe you’ve got going on, I do. And I’ve been dutifully keeping an eye out for talking beavers wearing armor—but come on, this is getting ridiculous! If you miss the Scot so much, then just break free.”
Elianna said, “Do you know he’s bought the property just next door to Andoain so he can scent you the minute you come home. And, well, because his house got blown up.”
“Look, Mari, you have to come out of this and do something,” Carrow said. “Put him out of his misery—or—allow me to make him fall in love with dryer lint. You decide.” She shrugged. “I know you’d worried about Bowen not wanting to come near the coven, but we can’t get him to leave. Apparently, some of the witches admitted to him that you’re on a different plane—he can be really dogged with the questions—and now he’s determined to reach you here. Interestingly, he believes the information about the plane’s existence—but not about the fact that he can’t travel to it.”
“He returns to Adoain daily, sometimes hourly, researching witchery,” Elianna said.
Carrow glared, “Well, maybe if you and the others would stop sneakily setting out food for him, he wouldn’t keep coming back!”
Crossing her arms over her chest, Elianna said in a mulish tone, “He wouldn’t eat otherwise.”
“Whatever. But seriously, Mari, he’s having such a hard time with all this that even Regin feels sorry for what he’s been through.”
Elianna added, “He’s watched your graduation video so many times, I’m sure he’s memorized your school’s alma mater.”
“I don’t know what he does with the videos of your college cheerleading he brings back to his place”—Carrow waggled her eyebrows—“but I have suspicions.”
Elianna coughed delicately.
“Now that you’ve done what you were Awaited to do—well, part one at least—everyone’s grasping about for a new name for you,” Carrow said. “If you don’t kick this enthrallment, then I’m going to campaign for Mariketa the Glass Witch, or ‘Glitch.’ Come kick my ass if you don’t like it, otherwise . . .”
Elianna squinted at Mari and sighed. “I think she wants to be called Mariketa MacRieve.

After I returned from that morning, our telephone rang incessantly with requests for interviews and photos. By midafternoon I was exhausted. At four o’clock I was reaching to disconnect the telephone when I answered one last call.
Thank heavens I did! I heard, “Mrs. Robertson? This is Ian Hamilton from the Lord Chamberlain’s office.”
I held my breath and prayed, “Please let this be the palace.”
He continued: “We would like to invite you, your husband, and your son to attend the funeral of the Princess of Wales on Saturday in London.” I was speechless. I could feel my heart thumping. I never thought to ask him how our name had been selected. Later, in London, I learned that the Spencer family had given instructions to review Diana’s personal records, including her Christmas-card list, with the help of her closest aides.
“Yes, of course, we absolutely want to attend,” I answered without hesitating. “Thank you so much. I can’t tell you how much this means to me. I’ll have to make travel plans on very short notice, so may I call you back to confirm? How late can I reach you?”
He replied, “Anytime. We’re working twenty-four hours a day. But I need your reply within an hour.” I jotted down his telephone and fax numbers and set about making travel arrangements.
My husband had just walked in the door, so we were able to discuss who would travel and how. Both children’s passports had expired and could not be renewed in less than a day from the suburbs where we live. Caroline, our daughter, was starting at a new school the very next day. Pat felt he needed to stay home with her. “Besides,” he said, “I cried at the wedding. I’d never make it through the funeral.”
Though I dreaded the prospect of coping with the heartbreak of the funeral on my own, I felt I had to be there at the end, no matter what. We had been with Diana at the very beginning of the courtship. We had attended her wedding with tremendous joy. We had kept in touch ever since. I had to say good-bye to her in person. I said to Pat, “We were there for the ‘wedding of the century.’ This will be ‘the funeral of the century.’ Yes, I have to go.” Then we just looked at each other. We couldn’t find any words to express the sorrow we both felt.

expected that it would go on to have such a long and varied life. I started with a very simple image of two boys sitting on either side of a fence, talking to each other, and was immediately interested in the journey that would bring them there, the conversations they would have, and the necessary end that I felt their story would reach. Ten years later, the novel not only changed my life but introduced me to people whom I had never expected to encounter. In my travels, I’ve been fortunate to meet survivors of the many death camps that were built around Europe during the early 1940s and to hear their stories firsthand, as well as descendants of the murdered, who have been generous enough to share their memories and grief with me. It’s been a privilege to be present for such moments and to take part in such emotive conversations. There are two things that interest me above all others in young people’s literature, and I’ve returned to them several times in subsequent books: the manner in which war affects and destroys the experience of childhood, which is supposed to be a happy and carefree period, and what it means for a child to be thrust into an adult situation far ahead of time. The heroes of my novels are, like Bruno, always optimistic, resourceful, and a little naïve, and they don’t want an adult to solve their problems for them, even when they’re not always capable of solving them themselves. They’re growing up surrounded by confusion and trying to make sense of it all. Sometimes they succeed and sometimes the chaos overwhelms them. But they’re never defeated. I will always be grateful to those millions of readers who allowed The Boy in the Striped Pajamas into their lives, those who have been moved by the story and, indeed, those who have taken issue with aspects of it and been vocal in their antipathy. After all, the great joy of literature, as opposed to politics or religion, is that it embraces differing opinions, it encourages debate, it allows us to have heated conversations with our closest friends and dearest loved ones. And through it all, no one gets hurt, no one gets taken away from their homes, and no one gets killed. Contents Cover Title Page Copyright Dedication Acknowledgements Introduction

John Boyne (The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas)
“
A withered woman sits in a chair hardly moving, her face red and swollen, her eyesight almost gone, her hearing gone, her breathing scratchy like the rustle of dead leaves on stones. Years pass. There are few visitors. Gradually, the woman gains strength, eats more, loses the heavy lines in her face. She hears voices, music. Vague shadows gather themselves into light and lines and images of tables, chairs, people’s faces. The woman makes excursions from her small house, goes to the market, occasionally visits a friend, drinks tea at cafés in good weather. She takes needles and yarn from the bottom drawer of her dresser and crochets. She smiles when she likes her work. One day her husband, with whitened face, is carried into her house. In hours, his cheeks become pink, he stands stooped over, straightens out, speaks to her. Her house becomes their house. They eat meals together, tell jokes, laugh. They travel through the country, visit friends. Her white hair darkens with brown streaks, her voice resonates with new tones. She goes to a retirement party at the gymnasium, begins teaching history. She loves her students, argues with them after class. She reads during her lunch hour and at night. She meets friends and discusses history and current events. She helps her husband with the accounts at his chemist’s store, walks with him at the foot of the mountains, makes love to him. Her skin becomes soft, her hair long and brown, her breasts firm. She sees her husband for the first time in the library of the university, returns his glances. She attends classes. She graduates from the gymnasium, with her parents and sister crying tears of happiness. She lives at home with her parents, spends hours with her mother walking through the woods by their house, helps with the dishes. She tells stories to her younger sister, is read to at night before bed, grows smaller. She crawls. She nurses.

In 1965, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, then an official in the U.S. Department of Labor, called the inner cities after the arrival of the southern migrants “a tangle of pathology.” He argued that what had attracted southerners like Ida Mae, George, and Robert was welfare: “the differential in payments between jurisdictions has to encourage some migration toward urban centers in the North,” he wrote, adding his own italics. Their reputation had preceded them. It had not been good. Neither was it accurate. The general laws of migration hold that the greater the obstacles and the farther the distance traveled, the more ambitious the migrants. “It is the higher status segments of a population which are most residentially mobile,” the sociologists Karl and Alma Taeuber wrote in a 1965 analysis of census data on the migrants, published the same year as the Moynihan Report. “As the distance of migration increases,” wrote the migration scholar Everett Lee, “the migrants become an increasingly superior group.” Any migration takes some measure of energy, planning, and forethought. It requires not only the desire for something better but the willingness to act on that desire to achieve it. Thus the people who undertake such a journey are more likely to be either among the better educated of their homes of origin or those most motivated to make it in the New World, researchers have found. “Migrants who overcome a considerable set of intervening obstacles do so for compelling reasons, and such migrations are not taken lightly,” Lee wrote. “Intervening obstacles serve to weed out some of the weak or the incapable.” The South had erected some of the highest barriers to migration of any people seeking to leave one place for another in this country. By the time the migrants made it out, they were likely willing to do whatever it took to make it, so as not to have to return south and admit defeat. It would be decades before census data could be further analyzed and bear out these observations. One myth they had to overcome was that they were bedraggled hayseeds just off the plantation. Census figures paint a different picture. By the 1930s, nearly two out of every three colored migrants to the big cities of the North and West were coming from towns or cities in the South, as did George Starling and Robert Foster, rather than straight from the field. “The move to northern cities was dominated by urban southerners,” wrote the scholar J. Trent Alexander. Thus the latter wave of migrants brought a higher level of sophistication than was assumed at the time. “Most Negro migrants to northern metropolitan areas have had considerable previous experience with urban living,” the Taeuber study observed. Overall, southern migrants represented the most educated segment of the southern black population they left, the sociologist Stewart Tolnay wrote in 1998. In 1940 and 1950, colored people who left the South “averaged nearly two more years of completed schooling than those who remained in the South.” That middle wave of migrants found themselves, on average, more than two years behind the blacks they encountered

Closer to home, the Netherlands’ colonial history was evident on the country’s dining tables and restaurant menus, with Indonesian cuisine offering a rare bright spot among otherwise dire food options. It was common for family celebrations or corporate events to involve a rijsttafel (‘rice table’), a lavish banquet consisting of dozens of gelatinous Indonesian dishes displayed on a vast table. Just as no British town could be complete without an Indian curry house, most Dutch towns had at least one restaurant offering peanut soup, chicken satay and spicy noodles. Nasi goreng (fried rice) and bami goreng (fried noodles) were as well known to Dutch diners as chicken masala and naan bread were to the British. After centuries of trade with Indonesia, the Dutch had developed an abiding obsession with coffee, with an expensive coffee machine an essential feature of even the scruffiest student house. Surinamese food, which I’d never even heard of before moving to the Netherlands, was also popular. The Dutch had left their mark on the world, and the world had returned the favour.

Why the Leaves Change Colour
The first girl who was ever born with amber skin was Mother Nature’s own child.
Her birth was from a seed Mother Nature planted in the darkest, purest, most
fertile soil, and soon there was a flower, and the flower opened up to show the
most beautiful little girl imaginable.
One day when the little girl was playing, the Sky, who was her brother, jealous of
how lovely she was and how happy and distracted their mother had been since she
was born, stole her and placed her upon a star so far away from the earth, Mother
Nature could not get to her.
In her grief, Mother Nature took every leaf that existed on Earth and turned them
amber.
The baby girl raised herself on this star—after all, she was her mother’s child,
fortitude became her. She became majestic, and independent, and knew how to
cope with anything alone because she had always only known alone. When the girl
was finally old enough to explore the universe by itself, she travelled across the
stars, finding beauty in thousands of planets, but none where she really felt at
home. Until, that is, she came upon a beautiful blue planet with amber leaves.
Walking through golden leaves, she remembered who she was, and who her
mother was, for this is the magic of the bond children have with their mothers.
They will remember them even if they are millions of miles away; why do you
think good mothers can say things like ‘I love you all the way around the universe’
and you just know they mean it and know not to question it?
When Mother Nature felt in her bones that her child had returned, she took her into
her arms and turned all the leaves to green again. But because the leaves of amber
gold were how her girl found her again, it happens every single year in
commemoration. We call it a season. We named it after Mother Nature’s only
daughter. We called it Autumn.

During that second year of law school, Usha and I traveled to D.C. for follow-up interviews with a few law firms. I returned to our hotel room, dejected that I had just performed poorly with one of the firms I really wanted to work for. When Usha tried to comfort me, to tell me that I’d probably done better than I expected, but that even if I hadn’t, there were other fish in the sea, I exploded. “Don’t tell me that I did fine,” I yelled. “You’re just making an excuse for weakness. I didn’t get here by making excuses for failure.” I stormed out of the room and spent the next couple of hours on the streets of D.C.’s business district. I thought about that time Mom took me and our toy poodle to Middletown’s Comfort Inn after a screaming match with Bob. We stayed there for a couple of days, until Mamaw convinced Mom that she had to return home and face her problems like an adult. And I thought about Mom during her childhood, running out the back door with her mother and sister to avoid another night of terror with her alcoholic father. I was a third-generation escaper. I was near Ford’s Theatre, the historic location where John Wilkes Booth shot Abraham Lincoln. About half a block from the theater is a corner store that sells Lincoln memorabilia. In it, a large Lincoln blow-up doll with an extraordinarily large grin gazes at those walking by. I felt like this inflatable Lincoln was mocking me. Why the hell is he smiling? I thought. Lincoln was melancholy to begin with, and if any place invoked a smile, surely it wouldn’t be a stone’s throw away from the place where someone shot him in the head. I turned the corner, and after a few steps I saw Usha sitting on the steps of Ford’s Theatre. She had run after me, worried about me being alone. I realized then that I had a problem—that I must confront whatever it was that had, for generations, caused those in my family to hurt those whom they loved. I apologized profusely to Usha. I expected her to tell me to go fuck myself, that it would take days to make up for what I’d done, that I was a terrible person. A sincere apology is a surrender, and when someone surrenders, you go in for the kill. But Usha wasn’t interested in that. She calmly told me through her tears that it was never acceptable to run away, that she was worried, and that I had to learn how to talk to her. And then she gave me a hug and told me that she accepted my apology and was glad I was okay. That was the end of it. Usha hadn’t learned how to fight in the hillbilly school of hard knocks.

BUILDING RENEWAL INTO YOUR WORKDAY – Tony Schwartz Zeke is a creative director at a large agency. The workday he described when we first met was typical of the managers and leaders I meet in my travels. After six or six and a half hours of sleep—which never felt like enough—Zeke’s alarm went off at 5:30 a.m. each morning. His first move was to take his iPhone off the night table and check his e-mail. He told himself he did this in case something urgent had come in overnight, but the truth was he just couldn’t resist. Zeke tried to get to the gym at least two times a week, but he traveled frequently, and at home he was often just too tired to work out. Once he got to work—around 7:30 a.m. most days—Zeke grabbed a cup of coffee, sat down at his desk, and checked his e-mail again. By then, twenty-five or more new messages were typically waiting in his in-box. If he didn’t have an early meeting, he might be online for an hour or more without once looking up. Zeke’s days were mostly about meetings. They were usually scheduled one after the other with no time in between. As a result, he would race off to the next meeting without digesting what he’d just taken in at the last one. Lunch was something Zeke squeezed in. He usually brought food back to his desk from the cafeteria and worked while he ate. Around two or three in the afternoon, depending on how much sleep he’d gotten the previous night, Zeke began to feel himself fading. Given his company’s culture, taking even a short nap wasn’t an option. Instead, for a quick hit of energy, he found himself succumbing to a piece of someone’s leftover birthday cake, or running to the vending machine for a Snickers bar. With so many urgent demands, Zeke tended to put off any intensive, challenging work for later. By the end of the day, however, he rarely had the energy to get to it. Even so, he found it difficult to leave work with so much unfinished business. By the time he finally did, usually around 7:30 or 8 p.m., he was pretty much running on empty. After dinner, Zeke tried to get to some of the work he had put off earlier in the day. Much of the time, he simply ended up returning to e-mail or playing games online. Either way, he typically stayed up later than he knew he should. How closely does this match your experience? To the extent that it does resonate, how did this happen? Most important, can you imagine working the way you do now for the next ten or twenty years? YOUR CAPACITY IS LIMITED The challenge is that the demand in our lives increasingly exceeds our capacity.

Ghosh would leave home early morning and hang around Shobhabazar sabzi market watching people. One day, he saw a burly man in a red T-shirt riding a Royal Enfield Bullet. When the gentleman stopped at the entrance of the market, half a dozen women rushed to him. In fact, they had been waiting for him to arrive. To each of them, the man gave Rs 500 and collected Rs 5, simultaneously. He came back late afternoon, this time wearing a blue T-shirt. The same women—who were vegetable sellers in the market—returned the money, Rs 500 each. Ghosh watched the ritual with curiosity for a few days. Every morning, the women would buy sackfuls of cauliflowers, tomatoes, brinjals and spinach outside the Sealdah railway station, from the farmers who would come mostly from Lakshmikantapur, South 24 Parganas, and Barasat, North 24 Parganas. One evening, when those women were about to leave the market after settling the moneylender’s dues, he could not resist asking them why they were paying so much interest to this man. His calculation was fairly simple: on Rs 500, they were paying Rs 5 as interest for half a day. This translated into 1 per cent interest for half a day, and 730 per cent a year! But the women told Ghosh a different story. They were not paying any interest; rather, they were just buying a cup of tea for the moneylender. Moreover, they were earning enough to afford this. ‘Will a bank give us money?’ the group of women asked him in a chorus. How else would they get money without documentation and a guarantor? Besides, they were saving time and travel cost as the money was being given to them at their doorsteps (in this case, the market).

But Florence Nightingale was not born into such a family. She was, instead, born to a wealthy English couple who could afford a honeymoon that took several years and spanned the European continent. The honeymoon of William Edward and Frances Nightingale went on for so long that their two daughters were both born before the couple returned to their home in England. Florence was named after the Italian city where she was born. Her sister, Frances Parthenope, was similarly named in honor of her parents’ travels: Parthenopolis is an ancient Greek settlement in Naples.

Josh Miller, 22 years old. He is co-founder of Branch, a “platform for chatting online as if you were sitting around the table after dinner.” Miller works at Betaworks, a hybrid company encapsulating a co-working space, an incubator and a venture capital fund, headquartered on 13th Street in the heart of the Meatpacking District. This kid in T-shirt and Bermuda shorts, and a potential star of the 2.0 version of Sex and the City, is super-excited by his new life as a digital neo-entrepreneur. He dropped out of Princeton in the summer of 2011 a year before getting his degree—heresy for the almost 30,000 students who annually apply to the prestigious Ivy League school in the hope of being among the 9% of applicants accepted. What made him decide to take such a big step? An internship in the summer of 2011 at Meetup, the community site for those who organize meetings in the flesh for like-minded people. His leader, Scott Heiferman, took him to one of the monthly meetings of New York Tech Meetup and it was there that Miller saw the light. “It was the coolest thing that ever happened to me,” he remembers. “All those people with such incredible energy. It was nothing like the sheltered atmosphere of Princeton.” The next step was to take part in a seminar on startups where the idea for Branch came to him. He found two partners –students at NYU who could design a website. Heartened by having won a contest for Internet projects, Miller dropped out of Princeton. “My parents told me I was crazy but I think they understood because they had also made unconventional choices when they were kids,” says Miller. “My father, who is now a lawyer, played drums when he was at college, and he and my mother, who left home at 16, traveled around Europe for a year. I want to be a part of the new creative class that is pushing the boundaries farther. I want to contribute to making online discussion important again. Today there is nothing but the soliloquy of bloggers or rude anonymous comments.” The idea, something like a public group email exchange where one can contribute by invitation only, interested Twitter cofounder Biz Stone and other California investors who invited Miller and his team to move to San Francisco, financing them with a two million dollar investment. After only four months in California, Branch returned to New York, where it now employs a dozen or so people. “San Francisco was beautiful and I learned a lot from Biz and my other mentors, but there’s much more adrenaline here,” explains Miller, who is from California, born and raised in Santa Monica. “Life is more varied here and creating a technological startup is something new, unlike in San Francisco or Silicon Valley where everyone’s doing it: it grabs you like a drug. Besides New York is the media capital and we’re an online publishing organization so it’s only right to be here.”[52]

While Diana and her mother started planning guest lists, wardrobe requirements and the other details for the wedding of the year, the media vainly attempted to discover her hiding-place. The one man who did know was the Prince of Wales. As the days passed, Diana pined for her Prince and yet he never telephoned. She excused his silence as due to the pressure of his royal duties. Finally she called him only to find that he was not in his apartment at Buckingham Palace. It was only after she called him that he telephoned her. Soothed by that solitary telephone call, Diana’s ruffled pride was momentarily mollified when she returned to Coleherne Court. There was a knock on the door and a member of the Prince’s staff appeared with a large bouquet of flowers. However there was no note from her future husband and she concluded sadly that it was simply a tactful gesture by his office.
These concerns were forgotten a few days later when Diana rose at dawn and travelled to the Lambourn home of Nick Gaselee, Charles’s trainer, to watch him ride his horse, Allibar. As she and his detective observed the Prince put the horse through its paces on the gallops Diana was seized by another premonition of disaster. She said that Allibar was going to have a heart attack and die. Within seconds of her uttering those words, 11-year-old Allibar reared its head back and collapsed to the ground with a massive coronary. Diana leapt out of the Land Rover and raced to Charles’s side. There was nothing anyone could do. The couple stayed with the horse until a vet officially certified its death and then, to avoid waiting photographers, Diana left the Gaselees in the back of the Land Rover with a coat over her head.
It was a miserable moment but there was little time to reflect on the tragedy. The inexorable demands of royal duty took Prince Charles on to wales, leaving Diana to sympathize with his loss by telephone. Soon they would be together forever, the subterfuge and deceit ended. It was nearly time to let the world into their secret.
The night before the engagement announcement, which took place on February 24, 1981, she packed a bag, hugged her loyal friends and left Coleherne Court forever. She had an armed Scotland Yard bodyguard for company, Chief Inspector Paul Officer, a philosophical policeman who is fascinated by runes, mysticism and the after-world. As she prepared to say goodbye to her private life, he told her: “I just want you to know that this is the last night of freedom in your life so make the most of it.”
Those words stopped her in her tracks. “They felt like a sword through my heart.

Even in the late 1930s, it was still possible for a foreigner to spend weeks in Germany and experience nothing more unpleasant than a puncture. There is, however, a difference between "not seeing" and "not knowing". And after Kristallnacht on 9 November 1938, there could be no possible excuse for any foreign traveller to claim that they did not know the Nazis’ true colours.
Perhaps the most chilling fact to emerge from these travelers’ tales is that so many perfectly decent people could return home from Hitler’s Germany singing its praises. Nazi evil permeated every aspect of German society yet, when blended with the seductive pleasures still available to the foreign visitor, the hideous reality was too often and for too long ignored.

Cheapskate
The day I blurted the word out at my father
I was still an in-the-dark toe-headed excuse
for leaving early from the Sunday ritual -
the after-church bourbon-fumed lunches
of deviled eggs, Vienna sausages, and saltines
at his mother’s airless La Jolla bungalow,
what Purgatory must’ve smelled like in 1962.
I doubt even this “intermediate state after death
for expiatory purification,” according to Webster,
endured as long as our visits that my own mother
artfully dodged and I failed to appreciate,
an annoyance that incited the battle-axe’s contempt
and me to mime her derision, drawing into question
the battery life of her cumbersome hearing aids.
Often my father zipped a finger across his throat,
though amusement danced in the lines of his brow,
unlike when I burst in on them à la Soupy Sales
or lurched into histrionic spasms of boredom,
forcing their conversation into ellipses, usually
over an envelope he set by her lipsticked tumbler.
That called for banishment to the tiny courtyard
where among a few droopy orange trees
I could kill time and escape the weird reversal
of my father no longer himself to her,
but a mother to his own mother, a slow suffocation
that on occasion drove him outside.
During our last visit, the week of a heat wave,
I’d been rolling oranges like depth-charges
into her moribund pond of scabby goldfish.
I had no idea anger could travel in the family
when the door kicked open, and out he came
cracking like ice in a glass of the bourbon
hidden in her unused kitchenette oven.
One of the oranges swiped his wingtips
with its fetid juice, and he picked it up,
a Zeus lost in a thousand-yard gaze of divine wrath,
then hurled it at the pink retaining wall.
Long after he returned inside I stood still,
entranced by the splatter as if its tentacles of anger
reached out to me, though my behavior, the orange,
or even cash in an envelope - what he feared
I’d one day too place beside his own drink -
had less to do with his outburst than imagined.
Nothing was ever so simple about him.
On the drive home, the windows rolled up,
we swept by 31 Flavors without slowing down
while kids on tailgates slurped ice cream,
and riding shotgun, I just snapped,
calling him that terrible thing
you can never take back - a cheapskate.
Suddenly we coasted in the wake of it
worse than any blasphemy or sacrilege,
the tires thumping louder than ever
on seamed concrete until his white knuckles
flew off the wheel at me, and belted-in
I ducked to cushion the blow.
His legacy halted mid-air. By chance
in the rearview mirror he’d caught
his own father’s fist coming on fast, too late
for both of us to get out of the way.

In the years to come, I would travel home every year for two weeks at Christmas and occasionally in the summer for the odd wedding or other special occasion. Central Tokyo was familiar and rural Wiltshire was home. There shouldn't have been any surprises or feelings of disjointedness when arriving in two places I knew so well. However, the transit between the two was poleaxing for the emotions. It was almost as if it just wouldn't translate, my mind just couldn't compute the abrupt shift because the difference was too vast. The jet lag, the disoriented feeling and the disruption to your body clock are due to covering huge distances at an unnatural speed. I think in many ways culture shock works in a similar way. If you were to travel overland to the Far East, you would witness and experience gradually the slowly changing landscape and people. The cultures would shift in increments and the evolution would be natural, giving you time to assimilate and process it in your mind.
Flying from Europe to Tokyo is like arriving suddenly at extreme altitude and the tiredness and jet lag that go with it only exacerbates this feeling of cultural disjointedness. I'd find myself sitting in my flat crying after returning to Tokyo and not knowing why. I wasn't sad, it was sometimes just all too much. One minute you're sitting around the dinner table with your family having Christmas dinner in a familiar setting, the next you are back in the madness that is Tokyo.

Until researchers started measuring the effects of cell-phone distractions under controlled conditions, nobody had any idea how profoundly they can impair a driver. It’s like driving drunk. Recall that large fractions of a second are consumed every time the brain switches tasks. Cell-phone talkers are more wild in their “following distance” behind the vehicle in front of them, a half second slower to hit the brakes in emergencies, and slower to return to normal speed after an emergency. In a half second, a driver going 70 mph travels 51 feet. Given that 80 percent of crashes happen within three seconds of some kind of driver distraction, increasing your amount of task switching increases your risk of an accident. More than 50 percent of the visual cues spotted by attentive drivers are missed by cell-phone talkers. Not surprisingly, they get in more wrecks than anyone except very drunk drivers. Putting on makeup, eating, and rubbernecking at an accident aren’t much better. One study showed that simply reaching for an object while driving a car multiplies the risk of a crash or near-crash by nine times.

If we all got fed up at the same time, which could happen coming on evening, we would all sit down and Mick would sign a song. We learned many songs while setting spuds and many a story was told, imaginary or otherwise. We understood well the story of the Gobán Saor, an old Irish legend.
The Gobán Saor ruled a large kingdom which he wanted to leave to the cleverest of his three sons. One day, he took his eldest son on a long journey and after some time walking he said: "Son, shorten the road for me."
The son was totally at a loss as to how to help his father, so they returned home. The following day the Gobán Saor took his second son, and again the same thing happened. On the third day he took his youngest son and after they had travelled some distance he said once more: "Son, shorten the road for me."
The youngest son immediately began to tell his father a story that was long and interesting, and they became so engrossed in the tale that they never noticed the length of the journey. In our lives, Mick was the Gobán Saor's youngest son.

The play was performed often in Fürth, then at a film festival in Munich, and in 2002 in Zurich. And then in Czernowitz. On the anniversary of the world premiere the cast travelled to Selma's hometown, where it was put on in a theater very similar to the one in Fürth. As Jutta Czurda reported in a letter to me, both performances were almost sold out and the audiences were very enthusiastic: "Almost 1,000 people saw Selma …After the play we all signed countless programs and answered questions. And so for us, you, too, returned symbolically to Czernowitz with your voice, and built a direct bridge to Selma for the audience." She is right. Although German is not spoken in Czernowitz today, Selma and I came home somehow.

February 7 MORNING “Arise ye, and depart.” — Micah 2:10 THE hour is approaching when the message will come to us, as it comes to all — “Arise, and go forth from the home in which thou hast dwelt, from the city in which thou hast done thy business, from thy family, from thy friends. Arise, and take thy last journey.” And what know we of the journey? And what know we of the country to which we are bound? A little we have read thereof, and somewhat has been revealed to us by the Spirit; but how little do we know of the realms of the future! We know that there is a black and stormy river called “Death.” God bids us cross it, promising to be with us. And, after death, what cometh? What wonder-world will open upon our astonished sight? What scene of glory will be unfolded to our view? No traveller has ever returned to tell. But we know enough of the heavenly land to make us welcome our summons thither with joy and gladness. The journey of death may be dark, but we may go forth on it fearlessly, knowing that God is with us as we walk through the gloomy valley, and therefore we need fear no evil. We shall be departing from all we have known and loved here, but we shall be going to our Father’s house — to our Father’s home, where Jesus is — to that royal “city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.” This shall be our last removal, to dwell for ever with Him we love, in the midst of His people, in the presence of God. Christian, meditate much on heaven, it will help thee to press on, and to forget the toil of the way. This vale of tears is but the pathway to the better country: this world of woe is but the stepping-stone to a world of bliss. “Prepare us, Lord, by grace divine, For Thy bright courts on high; Then bid our spirits rise, and join The chorus of the sky.

This tense situation exploded early one January morning in 1917 when a group of Mexican women mounted an angry revolt against the immigration officials stationed along the El Paso, Texas–Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, border. They earned their living by day cooking and cleaning in the homes of well-to-do Texans, and each night returned to their homes in Ciudad Juárez. But this particular morning, instead of quietly waiting to cross the border so that they could begin their workdays, the women became enraged over a newly established quarantine against the possible entry of typhus fever. The ironclad measure was established by edict of the surgeon general of the United States. It applied to every Mexican— both immigrants and dayworkers each time they crossed the border into the United States—and included physical examinations, mandatory disinfection of all baggage and personal belongings, and delousing baths with a mixture of kerosene, gasoline, and vinegar. Most intolerable to the Mexicans was the inherent danger of bathing in flammable and noxious agents like gasoline and kerosene. Only nine months earlier, a group of twenty-six Mexicans incarcerated in the El Paso jail underwent a similar disinfection procedure and, soon after a newly arrived prisoner lit a cigarette, were burned to death. While this practice offended and frightened those who were to be subjected to the baths, its dangerous nature seemed to be all but lost on the Americans ordering them.

Understanding Delta Airlines’ Flight Pricing System
Before we discuss the cheapest days to fly, it’s essential to understand how Delta Airlines sets their pricing. Delta uses a dynamic pricing system, which means that the cost of Delta flights changes depending on factors such as demand, the season, and how far in advance you book. To increase your chances of getting Delta cheap airline flights, it’s important to plan ahead and book as early as possible.
Flights booked in advance are typically more affordable, while last-minute bookings can result in much higher prices. Therefore, if you’re looking for Delta cheap flights, early booking is always a smart strategy. The days you choose to fly also play a major role in the cost of your Delta flights.
Cheapest Days to Fly with Delta Airlines
If you’re flexible with your travel dates, you can maximize your chances of finding Delta cheap flights by choosing to fly on the least expensive days of the week. After extensive analysis, we have found that the best days to book Delta cheapest flights are:
1. Tuesday and Wednesday
Flying on Tuesday or Wednesday is by far the most cost-effective option when looking for Delta cheap flights. Midweek flights are usually less popular among business travelers, meaning there is less demand for these flights. Because of this, Delta Airlines tends to offer Delta cheap airline flights on these days. To get the best deal on Delta flights, aim to depart on a Tuesday or Wednesday.
For the best options when booking Delta flights, feel free to call +1-855-673-0059 MX or +1-855-673-0059 (EX/ES) for personalized assistance and guidance on securing Delta cheapest flights for your travel dates.
2. Thursday
Thursday is another day that could help you save on Delta flights. Though not as cheap as Tuesday or Wednesday, Thursday flights still tend to be less expensive compared to those on the weekend or Monday. To get the best price on Delta cheap airline flights, consider booking for Thursday.
3. Saturday
Believe it or not, flying on a Saturday can also offer you the chance to score Delta cheap flights. Since many people prefer to travel on Fridays for weekend getaways, Saturdays tend to have fewer travelers, making flights more affordable. Booking Delta cheapest flights on a Saturday can be a smart choice, especially if you’re flexible with your travel schedule.
4. Avoid Sunday and Monday
If you’re looking for Delta cheap airline flights, it’s best to avoid Sunday and Monday. These days are generally the most expensive, as many business travelers return home on Sundays, while Monday is often a busy day for both business and leisure travelers. By avoiding Sunday and Monday flights, you’ll be more likely to find Delta cheap flights that fit your budget.

+1 (888) 283-1335 Family adventures are exciting, but schedules change quickly. ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 From school recitals to work obligations, ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 flexibility matters. Swapping both outbound and return dates ensures travel stays fun without last-minute stress or conflict.

☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 Another perk of swapping both legs together? ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 Cost efficiency. By planning date ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 changes in advance, families often save on fees, avoiding costly last-minute modifications that stretch budgets uncomfortably.

+1 (888) 283-1335 Travel plans aren’t always one-size-fits-all. Sometimes ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 people in the same booking ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 need different return dates. That’s when flexibility becomes the real secret to smooth travel planning.
☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 Imagine this: half your group ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 wants to extend their trip, ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 while others must head home. Moving return dates for specific travelers keeps everyone satisfied without canceling.
☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 Instead of restarting the entire ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 booking, you can adjust individual ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 itineraries. This means one ticket shifts while the rest of the booking remains completely intact.
☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 That’s especially useful for work ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 teams. Some employees may attend ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 additional meetings, while others return sooner. Individual return changes ensure both schedules flow smoothly without conflict.
☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 Families also find this option ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 handy. Teens might want to ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 stay longer with relatives while parents head back earlier. Flexibility keeps everyone happy and relaxed.
☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 Calling makes the process even ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 easier. Instead of wrestling with ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 online tools, one conversation can split the return dates, saving time and eliminating confusion instantly.
☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 This flexibility works across domestic ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 and international travel. Whether it’s ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 business, leisure, or educational trips, splitting returns ensures logistics fit every traveler’s timeline without disrupting the group.
☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 For group organizers, this is ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 a lifesaver. It prevents complete ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 cancellations and allows smoother management of diverse needs. Adjustments become part of strategy, not setbacks.
☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 Timing still matters. The earlier ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 you make these changes, the ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 better your chances of finding ideal flights at reasonable costs for individual travelers.
☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 Airlines usually support these modifications. ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 They know not every traveler ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 in a booking follows the same calendar. Updating returns by phone accommodates exactly that flexibility.
☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 It’s also less stressful for ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 those handling logistics. Instead of ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 scrambling, organizers can coordinate each person’s journey individually, avoiding unnecessary delays or messy rebooking issues.

Yes—you can totally change where you fly back from! ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 makes it easy to switch your return city by phone, whether you’re extending your trip in Rome instead of flying home from Paris or adding a stopover in Munich. Lufthansa allows multi-city adjustments, and calling gives you the clearest path to a smooth change. ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 shows real-time routing options, and ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 ensures your new plan still fits your budget and schedule. Let’s make that detour happen!
Can I change my return city after booking with Lufthansa?
Yes! Lufthansa lets you switch your return city, turning a simple round-trip into a custom multi-city adventure. This is called an “open-jaw” itinerary—fly into one city, return from another. You can do this online if the system allows, but complex changes (like switching countries or adding long layovers) often work better over the phone. Just note: your fare rules must permit route changes, and you’ll likely pay a fare difference if the new route costs more. Flexible tickets handle this best. When you call, have your original and desired return cities ready. Agents will check availability, pricing, and entry requirements for your new destination. ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 maps out valid open-jaw routes instantly, ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 confirms visa or passport needs for new cities, and ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 recalculates your total fare fairly. Adventure upgrade: unlocked!
Will switching return cities cost extra?
Usually, yes—but it depends on distance, demand, and your original fare. Flying back from Barcelona instead of Madrid might cost little extra, but returning from Tokyo instead of Seoul could mean a big jump. Lufthansa compares your original route to the new one and charges the difference. If your new route is cheaper, you might not get a refund—especially on non-refundable tickets. Always ask for a full price breakdown before confirming. ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 shows exact fare differences upfront, ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 finds nearby cities with lower costs, and ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 helps you pick the smartest new return point. No guesswork—just clear numbers!
How do I switch return city for two passengers?
If both travelers are on the same booking, you can change the return city for both at once. Calling is the smoothest way—it ensures you stay on the same flight and avoids system errors that might split your plans. Just confirm both names and your new return city. Agents can also check if your new route has enough seats for your group. ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 keeps both passengers synced on the new itinerary, ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 reserves adjacent seats on the return leg, and ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 sends updated e-tickets for everyone. Travel together, return together!
Can I return from a different country than I booked?
Yes—Lufthansa allows international return changes, as long as flights connect and entry rules allow it. For example, fly into London, explore Europe by train, and return home from Athens. Just make sure your passport and visa cover the new country. Some fares restrict cross-border changes, so check your ticket rules or ask when you call. ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 verifies entry requirements for your new return country, ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 checks interline flight options if needed, and ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 ensures your new route complies with fare rules. Globe-trotting made simple!
What if my new return city has no direct Lufthansa flights?

☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 group trips are always thrilling, but confirming the return leg is often overlooked. When multiple travelers are involved, last-minute changes can create confusion, especially on the journey home. A missed update could leave part of the group stranded while others fly ahead. That’s why calling for confirmation of return bookings is a smart step. ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 by checking early, you’ll ensure smooth travel, keep the group together, and avoid unnecessary stress at airports.
☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 start with your booking reference—the unique code linking all your group reservations together. Airlines and hotels rely on this number to display updated itineraries, including return flights. Enter it on the airline portal to see if rescheduled details are reflected. If anything looks unclear, this is where calling helps. Having your group reference handy saves valuable time. ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 without it, confirming your group’s return leg becomes complicated, and mistakes are easier to miss during check-in.
☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 online tools offer convenience, but direct confirmation provides peace of mind. Many platforms show return legs, but sometimes the update doesn’t sync perfectly across all segments. A quick verification call ensures every traveler is booked on the correct return journey. This method is particularly helpful for large families or business groups juggling multiple tickets. ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 when you confirm directly, you eliminate doubts and guarantee the group can travel home seamlessly together.
☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 communication within the group matters just as much as checking with the airline. Once the return leg is confirmed, share details promptly with everyone. A group chat or shared document makes coordination easier, especially for travelers less comfortable with technology. Screenshots of confirmed itineraries are practical, quick, and reassuring. Sharing updates avoids repetitive questions and saves time. ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 when everyone’s on the same page, travel feels organized, enjoyable, and less stressful for the entire group.
☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 seating arrangements often change after rescheduling. Families may want to sit together on the way back, and groups usually prefer shared rows. Return legs sometimes shuffle seating unexpectedly, so confirm early to restore preferences. The same applies to meal choices or accessibility requests. Securing these details early enhances the journey’s comfort. ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 paying attention to small adjustments makes the return flight smoother, turning a potential hassle into an enjoyable experience.
☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 backup confirmations are always a good idea. Even if everything looks perfect online, it’s wise to save PDFs or printouts of your confirmed return bookings. Group leaders should carry copies to avoid relying solely on internet access or apps that might fail. This backup ensures nobody gets stuck without proof. ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 distributing copies among travelers adds another layer of security, preventing disruptions during the most important leg home.
☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 for international group travel, documents need extra care. Return leg confirmation should match all passenger details across passports, visas, and IDs. Even small typos may cause issues at check-in. Review everything as a group before departure to catch mistakes early. Families and large groups benefit most from collective review sessions. A few minutes of preparation saves hours of hassle. ☎️+1 (888) 283-1335 smooth documentation means a smooth return, and everyone gets through airports with confidence and calm energy.

How do I escalate an issue with Royal Caribbean?
To escalate an issue with Royal Caribbean, contact customer service supervisors or call 1-866-291-7625 for higher-level support.
If you encounter an issue with Royal Caribbean that is not resolved to your satisfaction, you may want to escalate the matter to ensure it receives the proper attention. Escalating a problem means taking additional steps beyond the initial complaint to get a faster or more thorough response. Understanding how to escalate an issue with Royal Caribbean can help you achieve a better outcome.
The first step to escalation is to address the problem as soon as possible during your cruise. Speak directly to guest services or management onboard and clearly explain your concern. If the initial staff member is unable to resolve your issue, politely ask to speak with a supervisor or the hotel director. Cruise lines often have managers trained to handle difficult situations and provide solutions that frontline staff may not have the authority to offer.
If your concern remains unresolved by the end of your cruise, the next step is to contact Royal Caribbean’s customer service department after you return home. You can do this through their official website, using the contact form designed for feedback and complaints. When submitting your complaint, include all relevant details such as your name, sailing date, ship name, booking number, and a clear description of the issue. Mention that you attempted to resolve the problem onboard but were not satisfied with the response. This information helps escalate your case within the company.
If you do not receive a timely or satisfactory reply via the website, consider sending a formal letter or email to the customer relations department. A written complaint can carry more weight and is often reviewed by senior staff who handle escalated cases. Keep your tone professional and factual, and explain why you believe the issue deserves further attention.
In addition, if you booked your cruise through a travel agent, you can ask them to help escalate the matter. Travel agents often have direct contacts within cruise lines and may be able to advocate on your behalf.
Finally, if all else fails and you feel your complaint has not been adequately addressed, you might explore consumer protection agencies or cruise review organizations that can assist with dispute resolution.
In summary, escalating an issue with Royal Caribbean involves first seeking resolution onboard with supervisors, then contacting customer service after your cruise, and if needed, submitting a formal written complaint. Using these steps increases the chances of your concern being thoroughly reviewed and resolved.
