These documents were designed to protect the interests of all inhabitants of the kingdom and made drastic changes to the authority of the chiefs and head chiefs. These documents prohibited the oppression of the makaʻainana and stipulated that any chief or head chief who violated its laws must be removed from their position of power. The Declaration of Rights states that “it is not proper to enact laws that protect and enrich the rulers only, without regard to the enriching of their subjects also.” Centrally, the Declaration put forth property rights for the people of Hawaiʻi, securing their lands for them. It states that as long as they conformed to the laws of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi, nothing may be taken from them.
