La Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas sobre el desarrollo sostenible denominada Rio+20 (Río de Janeiro 2012) emitió una extensa e ineficaz Declaración final. Las negociaciones internacionales no pueden avanzar significativamente por las posiciones de los países que privilegian sus intereses nacionales sobre el bien común global. Quienes sufrirán las consecuencias que nosotros intentamos disimular recordarán esta falta de conciencia y de responsabilidad. Mientras se elaboraba esta Encíclica, el debate ha adquirido una particular intensidad. Los creyentes no podemos dejar de pedirle a Dios por el avance positivo en las discusiones actuales, de manera que las generaciones futuras no sufran las consecuencias de imprudentes retardos.
