The settings icon is in the upper right hand corner after clicking on the pokéball icon. There are various toggles that you can turn on and off such as Music, Sound Effects, Vibration, Battery Saver, and Email Notifications. Most notably, you should check “Battery Saver”. This allows for the screen to go very dark with a Pokémon logo on it when the phone is turned upside down. This is extremely useful if you are going for a long walk while looking for Pokémon. You can still feel vibrations when a Pokémon is nearby, but you do not waste battery that would have been used for screen brightness. Definitely check this if you are having issues with battery life.
