The woman is caught at the exact moment where she considers her own beauty. Interestingly the mirror appears to be too high for the woman to be naturally able to view her reflection, perhaps commenting in part on her vanity. It is believed that this painting was originally kept in Vermeer’s wife’s bedroom, where it was recorded as being found following his death. Vermeer only kept four of his own paintings, which suggests that the sitter of this work was most likely his wife.
