There are many references to the final illumination in the texts of prophecies past and present. The credibility of the Illumination of the Soul comes from a number of supernatural events. It was allegedly foretold to St. Catherine Laboure in 1830 (at Rue du Bac in Paris, France, the place of the Miraculous medal), to St. Faustina Kowalska in the 1930s (Divine Mercy; Kracow, Poland) and to St. Padre Pio of Italy.

St. James, speaking specifically about spiritual healing, advises elders of a given congregation to pray over the sick and anoit them with oil in the name of the Lord. Although this is set forth as a ministry accessible to all Christians, he adds that the prayer of a person who is holy has great power....The closer a person is to God, however, the greater the power he could expect to have. Padre Pio was a charismatic in the New Testament sense, namely, in that he was the recipient of a number of supernatural gifts similar to those described in the Bible. Those close to him were convinced that his prayers were especially potent because of his intimacy with God.

Perhaps the greatest difference between Padre Pio and many of the charismatics of the late twentieth century was his emphasis on redemptive suffering. 'Something good is going to happen to you' is the motto of Oral Roberts. Padre Pio would have found this promise misleading, for he admitted the possibility that something very bad-at least from an earthly point of view-might happen to one, and that life, though not without its pleasures, is full of suffering. He taught that a servant is not above his Master and that, as Christ suffered, His followers can likewise expect to suffer.... Christians should not court suffering. Nevertheless, they should expect it when it comes, offer it to God.

Humanity has lost the way of faith and no longer knows how to pray. Today, at the height of the technological era, we have everything we need and want. Yet, our hearts are arid, we lack the love of God, we no longer know how to smile, and we no longer know how to be happy. All this because we have forgotten that God within us continues to knock at our hearts. Only when we discover once again faith in God and in ourselves we will no longer be alone. Then, the things that are impossible today will become possible.

May 31 Jesus is always with you, even when it seems you do not feel him. He is never closer to you than when you are in spiritual battle. For the sake of love, I implore you, by all that you hold most sacred, do not wrong him by suspecting, even slightly, that you have been abandoned by him—not even for a single instant. This is precisely one of the most satanic temptations, and you need to thrust it far from you as soon as you become aware of it. Be consoled, my dear, that the days of humiliation and unhappy years we can count in our present life will be far outweighed by the profound and intimate joys of eternity. This is not just my way of seeing and thinking, because sacred Scripture gives us this infallible testimony. Here is what the psalmist says about it: “Make us glad as many days as you have afflicted us, / and as many years as we have seen evil” [Psalm 90:15]. And the apostle Paul wrote in a letter he sent to the Corinthians, “This slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison” [2 Corinthians 4:17].
