Parents do best when they can keep themselves relaxed and maintain themselves as the pacesetters in the home. Taking deep breaths and talking in a reassuring manner to children helps children to gear down, to match their parent’s calmer states. Even if children do not calm immediately, because of unresolved trauma or neurological damage, they still feel more secure with a settled parent. Parents also balance their own needs. Telling children that they are safe without visual contact gives parents some minutes to use the bathroom in peace or to get the mail.
