An academic definition of Lynchian might be that the term "refers to a particular kind of irony where the very macabre and the very mundane combine in such a way as to reveal the former's perpetual containment within the latter." But like postmodern or pornographic, Lynchian is one of those Porter Stewart-type words that's ultimately definable only ostensively-i.e., we know it when we see it. Ted Bundy wasn't particularly Lynchian, but good old Jeffrey Dahmer, with his victims' various anatomies neatly separated and stored in his fridge alongside his chocolate milk and Shedd Spread, was thoroughgoingly Lynchian. A recent homicide in Boston, in which the deacon of a South Shore church reportedly gave chase to a vehicle that bad cut him off, forced the car off the road, and shot the driver with a highpowered crossbow, was borderline Lynchian. A Rotary luncheon where everybody's got a comb-over and a polyester sport coat and is eating bland Rotarian chicken and exchanging Republican platitudes with heartfelt sincerity and yet all are either amputees or neurologically damaged or both would be more Lynchian than not.

Tell me!” Cecily insisted later, shaking Colby by both arms.
“Cut it out, you’ll dismember me,” Colby said, chuckling.
She let go of the artificial arm and wrapped both hands around the good one. “I want to know. Listen, this is my covert operation. You’re just a stand-in!”
“I promised I wouldn’t tell.”
“You promised in Lakota. Tell me in English what you promised in Lakota.”
He gave in. He did tell her, but not Leta, what was said, but only about the men coming to the reservation soon.
“We’ll need the license plate number,” she said. “It can be traced.
“Oh, of course,” he said facetiously. “They’ll certainly come here with their own license plate on the car so that everyone knows who they are!”
“Damn!”
He chuckled at her irritation. He was about to tell her about his alternative method when a big sport utility vehicle came flying down the dirt road and pulled up right in front of Leta’s small house.
Tate Winthrop got out, wearing jeans and a buckskin jacket and sunglasses. His thick hair fell around his shoulders and down his back like a straight black silk curtain. Cecily stared at it with curious fascination. In all the years she’d known him, she’d very rarely seen his hair down.
“All you need is the war paint,” Colby said in a resigned tone. He turned the uninjured cheek toward the newcomer. “Go ahead. I like matching scars.”

from her purse. “We have to follow that car!” “But not too close,” Nancy replied. “We’d make them suspicious.” The girls waited three minutes before backing out into the main highway and then turning into the adjacent road. Though the automobile ahead had disappeared, tire prints were plainly visible. The road twisted through a stretch of wood-land. When finally the tire prints turned off into a heavily wooded narrow lane, Nancy was sure they were not far from the cabin. She parked among some trees and they went forward on foot. “There it is!” whispered Nancy, recognizing the chimney. “Bess, I want you to take my car, drive to River Heights, and look up the name of the owner of the car we just saw. You can plead the Blood of Jesus, over any and everything; your spirit, soul and body, your house, car, work, children, spouse, business, as a form of protection or prevention against evil. You can plead the Blood of Jesus over your journey, the road, the vehicle or aircraft, etc. If you are living or passing through a dangerous zone; you can draw a bloodline of protection, therefore making a boundary, against any evil. A man had a poultry where, all of sudden, the chickens began to die. When he saw that he was going bankrupt with the loss, he cried unto the Lord, who ministered to him about drawing a bloodline around the poultry. Thus, creating a boundary that the enemy cannot cross. He walked round and drew the bloodline around the poultry that night. The following day, he found the carcass of a wolf, about two feet into the circle that he drew. It was stone dead; it had passed its bounds. Today, I pray that any, wolf assigned against your life, shall die in the Name of Jesus. Draw the Bloodline and the enemy will keep off. These are very serious matters and we should recognise and know these secrets. Recently, there have been disasters that have destroyed many lives in many countries. I was told of a man, who saw the flood raging towards his house and he came out and pleaded the Blood of Jesus. The flood obeyed him, not a single drop of water entered his house but the houses next to him, were submerged. That is the power in the Blood of Jesus!

About five miles back I had a brush with the CHP. Not stopped or pulled over: nothing routine. I always drive properly. A bit fast, perhaps, but always with consummate skill and a natural feel for the road that even cops recognize. No cop was ever born who isn't a sucker for a finely-executed hi-speed Controlled Drift all the way around one of those cloverleaf freeway interchanges.
Few people understand the psychology of dealing with a highway traffic cop. Your normal speeder will panic and immediately pull over to the side when he sees the big red light behind him ... and then he will start apologizing, begging for mercy.
This is wrong. It arouses contempt in the cop-heart. The thing to do – when you're running along about 100 or so and you suddenly find a red-flashing CHP-tracker on your tail – what you want to do then is accelerate. Never pull over with the first siren-howl. Mash it down and make the bastard chase you at speeds up to 120 all the way to the next exit. He will follow. But he won't know what to make of your blinker-signal that says you're about to turn right.
This is to let him know you're looking for a proper place to pull off and talk ... keep signaling and hope for an off-ramp, one of those uphill side-loops with a sign saying "Max Speed 25" ... and the trick, at this point, is to suddenly leave the freeway and take him into the chute at no less than 100 miles an hour.
He will lock his brakes about the same time you lock yours, but it will take him a moment to realize that he's about to make a 180-degree turn at this speed ... but you will be ready for it, braced for the Gs and the fast heel-toe work, and with any luck at all you will have come to a complete stop off the road at the top of the turn and be standing beside your automobile by the time he catches up.
He will not be reasonable at first ... but no matter. Let him calm down. He will want the first word. Let him have it. His brain will be in a turmoil: he may begin jabbering, or even pull his gun. Let him unwind; keep smiling. The idea is to show him that you were always in total control of yourself and your vehicle – while he lost control of everything.

Ego or fixed identity doesn’t just mean we have a fixed idea about ourselves. It also means that we have a fixed idea about everything we perceive. I have a fixed idea about you; you have a fixed idea about me. And once there is that feeling of separation, it gives rise to strong emotions. In Buddhism, strong emotions like anger, craving, pride, and jealousy are known as kleshas—conflicting emotions that cloud the mind. The kleshas are our vehicle for escaping groundlessness, and therefore every time we give in to them, our preexisting habits are reinforced. In Buddhism, going around and around, recycling the same patterns, is called samsara. And samsara equals pain. We keep trying to get away from the fundamental ambiguity of being human, and we can’t. We can’t escape it any more than we can escape change, any more than we can escape death. The cause of our suffering is our reaction to the reality of no escape: ego clinging and all the trouble that stems from it, all the things that make it difficult for us to be comfortable in our own skin and get along with one another. If the way to deal with those feelings is to stay present with them without fueling the story line, then it begs the question: How do we get in touch with the fundamental ambiguity of being human in the first place? In fact, it’s not difficult, because underlying uneasiness is usually present in our lives. It’s pretty easy to recognize but not so easy to interrupt. We may experience this uneasiness as anything from slight edginess to sheer terror. Anxiety makes us feel vulnerable, which we generally don’t like. Vulnerability comes in many guises. We may feel off balance, as if we don’t know what’s going on, don’t have a handle on things. We may feel lonely or depressed or angry. Most of us want to avoid emotions that make us feel vulnerable, so we’ll do almost anything to get away from them. But if, instead of thinking of these feelings as bad, we could think of them as road signs or barometers that tell us we’re in touch with groundlessness, then we would see the feelings for what they really are: the gateway to liberation, an open doorway to freedom from suffering, the path to our deepest well-being and joy. We have a choice. We can spend our whole life suffering because we can’t relax with how things really are, or we can relax and embrace the open-endedness of the human situation, which is fresh, unfixated, unbiased. So the challenge is to notice the emotional tug of shenpa when it arises and to stay with it for one and a half minutes without the story line. Can you do this once a day, or many times throughout the day, as the feeling arises? This is the challenge. This is the process of unmasking, letting go, opening the mind and heart.

There were streets, narrow and crowded with people and vehicles. Above them flashed neon lights and blinking billboards of every colour, shape and size. Some ran up the sides of buildings, others blinked on and off in store windows. In the space above the sidewalk, higher than a double-decker bus, hung flashing neon signs in bright pink, yellow, read, blue, orange, green and white. Yes, if white could be whiter than white, it was when it was in neon, Hong Mei thought. She knew Nathan Road in Kowloon was famous for its neon lights.

Most of us are so used to living amidst the noise of modern life that we have forgotten the value of silence. Imagine that you switch off all the fans and ACs at your home. You can now hear the slightest sound of the horn from a vehicle plying on the road, or a conversation between people or the crying of a child in your neighbourhood. When it is night and the silence is deep, you can hear the ticking of your clock. When the silence is even deeper, you can even hear the vibrations of the universe and the beating of your own heart.

I don't want anyone killing me with their car. Is that too much to ask? No, it's not. Then why are so many people trying to send me to my early reward with their vehicles? Truly. I can't believe some of the stunts I see pulled out there on the road. I have to say the worst behavior you see from people is when they get a steering wheel in their hands. To the point that I believe that your car is like a brain scan of your personality.
If you are a polite person or just a normal, considerate, going-along-and-along-in-life person, that's pretty evident. You get a smile and a nod from me at the next stoplight.
If you are easily distracted, clumsy, or kind of off in the ozone, we're going to see that too. Please try to keep it off the sidewalk.
And if you are a jackass? Well, trust me, we know. We all know. And the way you carry on, we get plenty of opportunities to comfirm that.
Do you think that when you get inside your car and close the door you become magically invisible? You do not. Not even with those tinted windows you think look so cool. We can see you. And it ain't pretty.

if consumer demand should increase for the goods or services of any private business, the private firm is delighted; it woos and welcomes the new business and expands its operations eagerly to fill the new orders. Government, in contrast, generally meets this situation by sourly urging or even ordering consumers to “buy” less, and allows shortages to develop, along with deterioration in the quality of its service. Thus, the increased consumer use of government streets in the cities is met by aggravated traffic congestion and by continuing denunciations and threats against people who drive their own cars. The New York City administration, for example, is continually threatening to outlaw the use of private cars in Manhattan, where congestion has been most troublesome. It is only government, of course, that would ever think of bludgeoning consumers in this way; it is only government that has the audacity to “solve” traffic congestion by forcing private cars (or trucks or taxis or whatever) off the road. According to this principle, of course, the “ideal” solution to traffic congestion is simply to outlaw all vehicles! But this sort of attitude toward the consumer is not confined to traffic on the streets. New York City, for example, has suffered periodically from a water “shortage.” Here is a situation where, for many years, the city government has had a compulsory monopoly of the supply of water to its citizens. Failing to supply enough water, and failing to price that water in such a way as to clear the market, to equate supply and demand (which private enterprise does automatically), New York’s response to water shortages has always been to blame not itself, but the consumer, whose sin has been to use “too much” water. The city administration could only react by outlawing the sprinkling of lawns, restricting use of water, and demanding that people drink less water. In this way, government transfers its own failings to the scapegoat user, who is threatened and bludgeoned instead of being served well and efficiently. There has been similar response by government to the ever-accelerating crime problem in New York City. Instead of providing efficient police protection, the city’s reaction has been to force the innocent citizen to stay out of crime-prone areas. Thus, after Central Park in Manhattan became a notorious center for muggings and other crime in the night hours, New York City’s “solution” to the problem was to impose a curfew, banning use of the park in those hours. In short, if an innocent citizen wants to stay in Central Park at night, it is he who is arrested for disobeying the curfew; it is, of course, easier to arrest him than to rid the park of crime. In short, while the long-held motto of private enterprise is that “the customer is always right,” the implicit maxim of government operation is that the customer is always to be blamed.

The road was clogged with limbers and motor vehicles and men marching towards the front. They look like a machine: all the boots moving as one, shoulders bristling with rifles, arms swinging, everything pointing forwards. And on the other side of the road, men stumbling back, trying to keep time, half dead from exhaustion and with this incredible stench hanging over them. You get whiffs of it when you cut the clothes off wounded men, but out there, in the mass, it’s as solid as a wall. And they all look so gray, faces twitching, young men who’ve been turned into old men. It’s a great contrast, stark and terrible, because they’re the same men, really. It’s an irrigation system, full buckets going one way, empty buckets the other. Only it’s not water the buckets carry.

At the time, I was driving a 1970 Ford truck that I’d bought for a thousand bucks. In my world, if a vehicle runs and has air in its tires, then it’s worth a thousand dollars! The price never changes. I abused that truck for several years, only to sell it for a thousand bucks for an upgrade. It had a rebuilt hot rod engine and was fast! When we cut firewood in the rain, my truck would slide all over dirt roads and occasionally bounce off trees, so both of the truck’s sides were badly dented. After a while, I couldn’t open either door. It was real-life Dukes of Hazzard!
I remember the first time Missy approached the door and tried to open it. I told her the door wouldn’t open, and she started to go around to the other side. I informed her that the other door didn’t open, either. As she looked at me with a blank stare, I said, “Rule number one: if you want to go with me, you’ve got to crawl through the window.

If spirituality means seeking ['Self'-Realization], why do I need a Guru?' Let's say, all that you're seeking is to go to Kedarnath right now. Somebody is driving; the roads are laid out. If you came alone and there were no proper directions, definitely you would have wished, "I wish there was a map to tell me how to get there." On one level, a Guru is just a map. He's a live map. If you can read the map, you know the way, you can go. A Guru can also be your bus driver. You sit here and doze and he will take you to Kedarnath; but to sit in this bus and doze off, or to sit in this bus joyfully, you need to trust the bus driver. If every moment, with every curve in this road, you go on thinking, "Will this man kill me? Will this man go off the road? What intention does he have for my life?" then you will only go mad sitting here. We're talking about trust, not because a Guru needs your trust, it's just that if there's no trust you will drive yourself mad.
This is not just for sitting on a bus or going on a spiritual journey. To live on this planet, you need trust. Right now, you trust unconsciously. You're sitting on this bus, which is just a bundle of nuts and bolts and pieces of metal. Look at the way you're going through the mountains. Unknowingly, you trust this vehicle so much. Isn't it so? You have placed your life in the hands of this mechanical mess, which is just nuts and bolts, rubbers and wires, this and that. You have placed your life in it, but you trust the bus consciously. The same trust, if it arises consciously, would do miracles to you. When we say trust, we're not talking about anything new to life. To be here, to take every breath in and out, you need trust, isn't it? Your trust is unconscious. I am only asking you to bring a little consciousness to your trust. It's not something new. Life is trust, otherwise nobody can exist here.

That’s the Thornton place up there atop yon hill,” the farmer said, pointing.
Lucinda gazed in mounting anger at the large, but unimpressive cottage that was barely visible through the thick trees, then she turned the full force of her authority on the hapless farmer. “You’re mistaken, my good man,” she said stoutly. “No gentleman of consequence or sense would live in such a godforsaken place as this. Kindly turn this decrepit vehicle around and return us to the village whence we came so that we can ask directions again. There was obviously a misunderstanding.”
At that, both the horse and the farmer swung their heads around and looked at her with identical expressions of weary resentment.
The horse remained silent, but the farmer had heard Lucinda’s irate complaints for the last twelve miles, and he was heartily sick of them. “See here, my lady,” he began, but Lucinda cut him off.
“Do not address me as ‘my lady.’ ‘Miss Throckmorton-Jones’ will do very well.”
“Aye. Well, whoever ye be, this is as far as I’m takin’ ye, and that thar is the Thornton cottage.”
“You can’t mean to abandon us here!” she said as the tired old man exhibited a surge of renewed energy-obviously brought on by the prospect of ridding himself of his unwanted guests-and leapt off the wagon, whereupon he began to drag their trunks and bandboxes off the wagon and onto the side of the narrow ledge that passed for a road.

You invest so much in it, don't you? It's what elevates you above the beasts of the field, it's what makes you special. Homo sapiens, you call yourself. Wise Man. Do you even know what it is, this consciousness you cite in your own exaltation? Do you even know what it's for?
Maybe you think it gives you free will. Maybe you've forgotten that sleepwalkers converse, drive vehicles, commit crimes and clean up afterwards, unconscious the whole time. Maybe nobody's told you that even waking souls are only slaves in denial.
Make a conscious choice. Decide to move your index finger. Too late! The electricity's already halfway down your arm. Your body began to act a full half-second before your conscious self 'chose' to, for the self chose nothing; something else set your body in motion, sent an executive summary—almost an afterthought— to the homunculus behind your eyes. That little man, that arrogant subroutine that thinks of itself as the person, mistakes correlation for causality: it reads the summary and it sees the hand move, and it thinks that one drove the other.
But it's not in charge. You're not in charge. If free will even exists, it doesn't share living space with the likes of you.
Insight, then. Wisdom. The quest for knowledge, the derivation of theorems, science and technology and all those exclusively human pursuits that must surely rest on a conscious foundation. Maybe that's what sentience would be for— if scientific breakthroughs didn't spring fully-formed from the subconscious mind, manifest themselves in dreams, as full-blown insights after a deep night's sleep. It's the most basic rule of the stymied researcher: stop thinking about the problem. Do something else. It will come to you if you just stop being conscious of it.
Every concert pianist knows that the surest way to ruin a performance is to be aware of what the fingers are doing. Every dancer and acrobat knows enough to let the mind go, let the body run itself. Every driver of any manual vehicle arrives at destinations with no recollection of the stops and turns and roads traveled in getting there. You are all sleepwalkers, whether climbing creative peaks or slogging through some mundane routine for the thousandth time. You are all sleepwalkers.
Don't even try to talk about the learning curve. Don't bother citing the months of deliberate practice that precede the unconscious performance, or the years of study and experiment leading up to the gift- wrapped Eureka moment. So what if your lessons are all learned consciously? Do you think that proves there's no other way? Heuristic software's been learning from experience for over a hundred years.
Machines master chess, cars learn to drive themselves, statistical programs face problems and design the experiments to solve them and you think that the only path to learning leads through sentience? You're Stone-age nomads, eking out some marginal existence on the veldt—denying even the possibility of agriculture, because hunting and gathering was good enough for your parents.
Do you want to know what consciousness is for? Do you want to know the only real purpose it serves? Training wheels. You can't see both aspects of the Necker Cube at once, so it lets you focus on one and dismiss the other. That's a pretty half-assed way to parse reality. You're always better off looking at more than one side of anything. Go on, try. Defocus. It's the next logical step.
Oh, but you can't. There's something in the way. And it's fighting back.

The thick ropes of his control began to unravel. When she curled both arms around his neck, it seemed natural to place his around her waist and pick her up. She wrapped her legs around his hips, bringing herself in direct contact with his hard-on.
It was paradise. It was pure torture.
He swore. She broke the kiss and smiled at him.
“So you find me annoying, but you still want me,” she whispered.
“I don’t find you annoying.” He pushed against her crotch.
“I don’t find you annoying, either.”
He read the passion in her eyes and knew she was more than willing to take things to the next level.
He glanced around, searching for a soft, private spot, only to realize they were out in the open and likely to be discovered any second. It wasn’t romantic, it wasn’t smart, and he didn’t have a condom with him. Phoebe deserved a whole lot better.
“I want you,” he told her.
She tightened her legs around him. “Me, too.” Color stained her cheeks. “I’ve never said that to a man before.”
Zane realized he hadn’t told a woman, either. He’d shown her, but he’d never actually spoken the words. Phoebe was changing him in all kinds of ways.
He wanted her with a desperation he’d never felt before. And yet…
“We can’t,” he said gently, ignoring the hardness and the pain in his groin. “You deserve better than something hot and fast up against a tree.”
She swallowed. “I’m not so sure about that.”
“I am.”
“Oh.”
She sounded disappointed. Had she been anyone else, he would have said the hell with it and taken what she offered. But she was Phoebe.
From behind them came the sound of a car horn honking, and then another. They couldn’t see anything through the trees, but they heard laughter drifting toward them as at least a couple of off-road vehicles drove slowly past.
“Sounds like we have company,” he said. “We’re close to Stryker land. Guess they decided to say hi. You go on ahead. I need a few minutes.”
When he pointed at the front of his jeans, she blushed. “Oh. I see your problem. Well, you could walk right behind me and no one would notice.”
He chuckled. “I’ll wait it out. Go on.”
“Okay.”
She headed toward camp. Zane watched her go, taking in the sway of her hips and the wave she gave him right before she disappeared.

Hey,” he said, his hand gently rubbing my back. I heard the diesel rattle of vehicles driving away from the scene.
“Hey,” I replied, sitting up and looking at my watch. It was 5:00 A.M. “Are you okay?”
“Yep,” he said. “We finally got it out.” Marlboro Man’s clothes were black. Heavy soot covered his drawn, exhausted face.
“Can I go home now?” I said. I was only halfway kidding. And actually, I wasn’t kidding at all.
“Sorry about that,” Marlboro Man said, still rubbing my back. “That was crazy.” He gave a half-chuckle and kissed my forehead. I didn’t know what to say.
Driving back to his house, the pickup was quiet. My mind began to race, which is never good at five in the morning. And then, inexplicably, just as we reached the road to his house, I lost it.
“So, why did you even take me there, anyway?” I said. “I mean, if I’m just going to ride in someone’s pickup, why even bring me along? It’s not like I was any help to anyone…”
Marlboro Man glanced over at me. His eyes were tired. “So…did you want to operate one of the sprayers?” he asked, an unfamiliar edge to his voice.
“No, I just…I mean…” I searched for the words. “I mean, that was just ridiculous! That was dangerous!”
“Well, prairie fires are dangerous,” Marlboro Man answered. “But that’s life. Stuff like this happens.”
I was cranky. The nap had done little to calm me down. “What happens? You just drive right into fires and throw caution to the wind? I mean, people could die out there. I could have died. You could have died! I mean, do you realize how crazy that was?”
Marlboro Man looked straight ahead, rubbing his left eye and blinking. He looked exhausted. He looked spent.
We arrived in his driveway just in time to see the eastern sun peeking over the horse barn. Marlboro Man stopped his pickup, put it into park, and said, still looking straight ahead, “I took you with me…because I thought you’d like to see a fire.” He turned off the pickup and opened his door. “And because I didn’t want to leave you here by yourself.”
I didn’t say anything. We both exited the pickup, and Marlboro Man began walking toward his house. And then, still walking, he said it--words that chilled me to the bone.
“I’ll see you later.” He didn’t even turn around.
I stood there, not knowing what to say, though deep down I knew I wouldn’t have to. I knew that just as he’d always done anytime I’d ever been rendered speechless in his presence, he’d speak up, turn around, come to my rescue, hold me in his arms…and infuse love into my soul, as only he could do. He always swooped in to save me, and this time would be no different.
But he didn’t turn around. He didn’t speak up. He simply walked toward the house, toward the door on his back porch--the same porch door where, hours earlier, he and I had stood in a complete fit of romance and lust, where the heat between us was but a foreshadowing of the fire waiting for us in that distant prairie.

One evening in April a thirty-two-year-old woman, unconscious and severely injured, was admitted to the hospital in a provincial town south of Copenhagen. She had a concussion and internal bleeding, her legs and arms were broken in several places, and she had deep lesions in her face. A gas station attendant in a neighboring village, beside the bridge over the highway to Copenhagen, had seen her go the wrong way up the exit and drive at high speed into the oncoming traffic. The first three approaching cars managed to maneuver around her, but about 200 meters after the junction she collided head-on with a truck. The Dutch driver was admitted for observation but released the next day. According to his statement he started to brake a good 100 meters before the crash, while the car seemed to actually increase its speed over the last stretch. The front of the vehicle was totally crushed, part of the radiator was stuck between the road and the truck's bumper, and the woman had to be cut free. The spokesman for emergency services said it was a miracle she had survived. On arrival at the hospital the woman was in very critical condition, and it was twenty-four hours before she was out of serious danger. Her eyes were so badly damaged that she lost her sight. Her name was Lucca. Lucca Montale. Despite the name there was nothing particularly Italian about her appearance. She had auburn hair and green eyes in a narrow face with high cheek-bones. She was slim and fairly tall. It turned out she was Danish, born in Copenhagen. Her husband, Andreas Bark, arrived with their small son while she was still on the operating table. The couple's home was an isolated old farmhouse in the woods seven kilometers from the site of the accident. Andreas Bark told the police he had tried to stop his wife from driving. He thought she had just gone out for a breath of air when he heard the car start. By the time he got outside he saw it disappearing along the road. She had been drinking a lot. They had had a marital disagreement. Those were the words he used; he was not questioned further on that point. Early in the morning, when Lucca Montale was moved from the operating room into intensive care, her husband was still in the waiting room with the sleeping boy's head on his lap. He was looking out at the sky and the dark trees when Robert sat down next to him. Andreas Bark went on staring into the gray morning light with an exhausted, absent gaze. He seemed slightly younger than Robert, in his late thirties. He had dark, wavy hair and a prominent chin, his eyes were narrow and deep-set, and he was wearing a shabby leather jacket. Robert rested his hands on his knees in the green cotton trousers and looked down at the perforations in the leather uppers of his white clogs. He realized he had forgotten to take off his plastic cap after the operation. The thin plastic crackled between his hands. Andreas looked at him and Robert straightened up to meet his gaze. The boy woke.

the first Grand Challenge, held in 2004, was a flop. The best that any vehicle could manage was just 7.5 miles on the 142-mile course in the rugged desert on the California-Nevada border. Yet this failure was also a success. “The first competition created a community of innovators, engineers, students, programmers, off-road racers, backyard mechanics, inventors, and dreamers,” said a DARPA official. “The fresh thinking they brought was the spark.

Dearest Fear: Creativity and I are about to go on a road trip together. I understand you’ll be joining us, because you always do. I acknowledge that you believe you have an important job to do in my life, and that you take your job seriously. Apparently your job is to induce complete panic whenever I’m about to do anything interesting—and, may I say, you are superb at your job. So by all means, keep doing your job, if you feel you must. But I will also be doing my job on this road trip, which is to work hard and stay focused. And Creativity will be doing its job, which is to remain stimulating and inspiring. There’s plenty of room in this vehicle for all of us, so make yourself at home, but understand this: Creativity and I are the only ones who will be making any decisions along the way. I recognize and respect that you are part of this family, and so I will never exclude you from our activities, but still—your suggestions will never be followed. You’re allowed to have a seat, and you’re allowed to have a voice, but you are not allowed to have a vote. You’re not allowed to touch the road maps; you’re not allowed to suggest detours; you’re not allowed to fiddle with the temperature. Dude, you’re not even allowed to touch the radio. But above all else, my dear old familiar friend, you are absolutely forbidden to drive.” Then we head off together—me and creativity and fear—side by side by side forever, advancing once more into the terrifying but marvelous terrain of unknown outcome.

it takes nine hours to Melbourne and thirteen to Sydney. If you drive to my hometown from Sydney, you’ll find stretches of road that are so long and straight you could place a brick on the accelerator and take a twenty-minute nap without veering off the road or missing anything in the dry, lifeless landscape of red sand, with its scattered blue saltbush and thirsty mulga and Mallee trees as far as the eye can see. The only thing that might wake you from your snooze would be hitting a red kangaroo. After happily hopping across the land with no particular plan in mind, startled kangaroos usually stop and stand frozen in the middle of the road, curious about the strange machine rocketing towards them. What a way to go. Here’s a tip: attach a ‘roo bar’ – not a place where kangaroos will dance for money, but a very solid metal grill – to the front of your car; that way, the impact will do more damage to the kangaroo than it does to your vehicle.

The lion's share of individuals who are thinking about a story covering or paint for their carport, for the most part, envision an exhausting ship dark shading. On the off chance that you need to have a carport that looks better since you need to offer it quicker or you truly get a kick out of the chance to claim decent things, at that point this dim shading can't do anything for you. The uncovered cement is as of now dim so why considerably try touching it up? All things considered, if this is your state of mind, at that point you are in awesome good fortune. Presently, you can have an epoxy floor paint in a greater number of hues than you at any point thought conceivable.
In actuality, you can have any shading you wish in the event that you are sufficiently quiet to look at all potential outcomes. Presently, what are the things you ought to recollect when you pick? There are three boss approaches to coordinate hues that individuals need to make as they paint their floor. To start with, they will get a shading that would match be able to or compliment the house paint. This can truly enhance the controlling claim each time the carport entryway is opened. Many individuals will go for a shading that matches their vehicle. This is extremely unsurprising for individuals who possess a show auto or only an auto that they are exceptionally pleased with. A complimentary shading can really make your "road pole" seem like it just fell off the showroom floor.
At last, in settling on the shade of your epoxy carport floor covering, many individuals pick a shading that would cover be able to up stains and earth. Cases of these hues are earth tones or shading that they might be inclined toward. Regardless, it's your own inclination for your carport since you claim it. On the off chance that you have any arrangements to chip away at your autos or whatever else inside the carport at that point consider my recommendation. Lift a shading that will appear any nuts or fasteners you drop regardless of how little. More often than not, this is a light shading. As you end up plainly more seasoned and your visual perception has debased, you will be grateful to me for this wisdom.
Any shade of your decision would make be able to this venture an extraordinary movement this mid-year. When you prepare to do this venture make sure you invest the required measure of the energy of the prep work for the floor. Like all paint extends, the fallen angel is in the arrangement with regards to landing a position that looks extraordinary as well as keeps going quite a while. Invest the energy in the prep and you will be content with the outcomes.

As we advanced up the ridge, what a sight met our eyes — the whole area strewn with the smoke-blackened carcasses of the 29th Brigade’s Sherman Tanks which had ‘brewed up’ and burnt out, some with their turrets blown off, other still ‘brewing’ with gouts of orange flame shooting skywards from turret hatches as the ammunition exploded, dead bodies hanging from escape hatches at grotesque angles; dismounted crews were glimpsed trying to rescue wounded comrades from the wrecked vehicles while others were attempting to mend broken tracks amid the swirling black smoke from burning fuel and the flashes of mortar bombs raining down.

Fortunately it was facing the other way and in a moment we realized it was done for, for dead Germans were lying beside it. As we came closer to examine it more carefully we noticed that a short distance off to the left facing down a narrow, dirt lane were four American half-tracks, the vehicles which carry the armored infantry of an armored division. They were all perfectly spaced at regular intervals, but they were all stopped. There was a deathly stillness about everything but the half-tracks looked as though they were at least partially filled with soldiers. I was curious and got out of my jeep and started

Camden in the winter of 1954 was a bleak place. It is difficult to see it this way if you’ve only been there in the summer, but most of Maine can be dismal, especially along the coast, during the long nights and short days. Once the colorful leaves have fallen from the majestic maple trees, and the last tourist has gone home, things become grim. So it was, during that cold January day, when I was on the road hoping to get a ride to New Jersey. On the radio, the weather forecasters predicted an overnight blizzard, but here it was only late afternoon and snow was already accumulating on the road. This would be my last opportunity to get home to see my family and friends, before cruising back on down to the Caribbean. I had really hoped to get an earlier start, to get far enough south to miss the brunt of the storm. Maine is known for this kind of weather, and the snowplows and sanders were ready. In fact, I didn’t see many other vehicles on the road any longer. Schools had let out early and most businesses were closed in anticipation of the storm.
My last ride dropped me off in Belfast, telling me that he was trying to get as far as Augusta, before State Road 3 became impassable. Standing alongside the two-lane coastal highway with darkness not far off, I was half thinking that I should turn back. My mind was made up for me when I stepped back off the road, making room for a big State DOT dump truck with a huge yellow snowplow. His airbrakes wheezed as he braked, coming to a stop, at the same time lifting his plow to keep from burying me. The driver couldn’t believe that I was out hitchhiking in a blizzard. This kind of weather in Maine is no joke! The driver told me that the year before a body had been found under a snow bank during the spring thaw. Never mind, I was invincible and nothing like that could happen to me, or so I thought. He got me as far as Camden and suggested that I get a room. “This storm is only going to get worse,” he cautioned as I got off. I waved as he drove off. Nevertheless, still hoping that things would improve, I was determined to continue…

Willie was actually the one who brought the seriousness of Jep’s problem to our attention. Willie was working with the high school youth group at White’s Ferry Road Church, and he found out Jep had asked one of the kids to go to a bar with him. Willie came to our house and said, “I’m done. We’ve got to do something right now. I’m just tired of it.” We called Alan and decided to have a family intervention. Alan lined everything up, and we were all waiting for Jep when he came to the house one night. Kay was terrified because she was certain I was going to throw Jep out of the house, like I’d done with Alan.
I told Jep, “Give me the keys to your truck-the one I’m paying for.” He pulled the keys out of his pocket and handed them to me. I told Jep what his brothers had told me about his behavior.
“Son, you know what we stand for,” I told him. “We’re all trying to live for God. We’re not going to let you visit our home while you’re carrying on like this. We’re paying for your apartment. We’re paying for your truck. You’ve got a decision to make. You’re either going to come home and basically live under house arrest because we don’t trust you, or you can hit the road-with no vehicle, of course. Somebody can drop you off at the highway and then you’ll be on your own. You can go live your life; we’ll pray for you and hope that you come back one day. Those are your two choices.”
Jep looked at me, lowered his head, and started pouring out his sins to me. He said he’d been taking pills, smoking marijuana, getting drunk, and on and on. He was crying the whole time, as he confessed his sins to us and God.
I’ll never forget what Jep said next. He looked up at me and asked, “Dad, all I want to ask you is what took you so long to rescue me?”
After Jep said that to me, everyone in the room was crying.
“You still have a choice,” I told him.
“Well, my choice is I want to come home,” he said.

Jase has always been our most straitlaced son, so he was the hardest on Jep when he strayed.
“Son, you can’t hang out with those people,” Jase told him.
“Daddy won’t let ‘em get to me,” Jep said.
“Daddy won’t and we won’t, either,” Jase promised him. “But you have to come to all the good things to help you. You’ve got to find better friends. You can’t be running around. You have to break it off with the bad influences.”
Thankfully, our second prodigal son was coming home. It was a heart-wrenching episode for all of us. Alan was so distressed by his little brother’s struggles that he left our house, drove down the road, and then stopped and dropped to his knees and wept in a field.

We were in the middle of a three car caravan accompanied by Jim Carlisle, a career diplomat and the perfect Charge’ de Affaires. His manner was formal but always with a practiced smile to make his counterparts feel at ease. He sat in the jump seat in front of Owen, Alex and I sat together in the back near the double cargo doors guarding the luggage. The driver was Pakistani as was the security guard on the passenger side.
The cars were crossing a bridge when it happened. First the blinding flash, then the delayed sound, it was deafening with the unmistakable smell of high explosives. The Ford Expedition in front erupted in a mushroom cloud of smoke and fire as it leaped off the road and settled back in a black pile of melting plastic, glass and metal.
Our driver slammed on the brakes, ramming the gear into reverse while twisting his body around for a better view out the rear door windows. It was to late, the car behind us had met the same fate, we were bookended by smoking heaps of scrap metal as the masked bombers, five of them, surrounded our SUV. This was a professional hit team, their leader was calm, he directed the others with chilling efficiency. They wore black ski masks, bullet proof vests and ear phone sets, only the leader spoke, the others took orders.
The shortest one had a knapsack, he turned his back to another who unzipped it and removed the gray matter, it looked like putty, he slapped it hard against the double rear doors. These would be the most vulnerable, they locked together rather than to the structural integrity of the vehicle. Both doors exploded out and away from the car dangling precariously on their hinges. The short one jumped in first, throwing the luggage out and scrambling towards us as our security guard leveled his government issue Glock-45, he hesitated to long, the red dot sighting device from the backup shooter was in the center of his forehead. The bone and brain fragment from the melon sized exit wound in the back of his head splattered against the windshield. The driver went for the concealed weapon under the front seat but thought better of it as the bombers surrounded the vehicle.
Outside the driver side window, the leader hit the bullet proof glass with the butt of his matt black automatic, he wanted the doors opened, the driver had already hit the lock release.

An image began to form in her mind. There were streets, narrow and crowded with people and vehicles. Above them flashed neon lights and blinking billboards of every colour, shape and size. Some ran up the sides of buildings, others blinked on and off in store windows. In the space above the sidewalk, higher than a double-decker bus, hung flashing neon signs in bright pink, yellow, red, blue, orange, green and white. Yes, if white could be whiter than white, it was when it was in neon, Hong Mei thought. She knew Nathan Road in Kowloon was famous for its neon lights. Were these streets of Kowloon that she was seeing it her head?

Barra believes she has good reason for optimism. “The U.S. economy and vehicle sales have been rebounding since 2009,” she said of the year industry sales sank to 10.4 million units, prompting plants to be closed and workers to be laid off permanently. But that dramatic cost cutting resulted in the industry being able to reach profitability at a break-even point of only 13 million in vehicle sales, which it has done the last three years and hopes to four-peat in 2015. Barra insists there's plenty of room for the auto industry to grow. “The strength of the labor market, better job security and the recovery in home prices have consumers feeling pretty good about the future, so we expect people will continue to replace their older cars and trucks,” she said, referring to pent-up demand for new vehicles to replace an older fleet on the road now that averages about 11 years of age. Analysts agree, saying employment is up and unemployment down, the economy is doing well, and consumer confidence is up.

I hadn’t been much help packing for the trip. I was accustomed to America, where I was always within striking distance of a grocery store, gas station, or equipment supply. The Australian bush wasn’t like that. Parts of the Burdekin were dangerously remote, and these, of course, were the parts where we were headed.
Steve had to pack his own fuel, water, food, spare tires, boat, engine, and extra parts. He loaded up the Ute. Swags went in, but no tent. We would be sleeping under the stars. As we headed out, it came to light that this would be a sixteen-hour trip--and the driving would be shared.
“Remember one thing,” Steve said as he climbed over the seat. “If you see a road train coming, you’ve got to get clear off the road.”
“Okay,” I agreed. “But I need you to explain what a road train is.” I learned that long-distance truckers in the outback drive huge rigs--double-deckers that are three trailers long.
“Okay, great,” I said. “Drive on the left, and watch out for road trains. Got it.” Steve climbed into the back under the canvas canopy and stretched out on top of one of the swags. I wasn’t worried about falling asleep while I was driving. I was too nervous to be sleepy.
The farther north I drove, the smaller the roads became. Cars were few and far between. I saw the headlights of an oncoming Ute. Maybe I’ll practice pulling off the road, I thought. I miscalculated the speed of the oncoming vehicle, slowed down more abruptly than I intended, and pulled completely onto the soft gravel shoulder.
The draft of the passing truck hit our Ute like a sonic boom--it was a giant beast with a huge welded bull bar on its front and triple trailers behind. The road train flew past us doing every bit of seventy-five miles per hour, never slowing down. I realized that if I hadn’t pulled over, I would have probably been knocked off the face of the earth. I imagined a small paragraph buried deep inside the Eugene Register-Guard, my hometown newspaper: “Oregon Woman Bites the Dust.” Road trains owned the road, but I had passed my first test. I could do this!
I should not have spoken so soon.

Jacob climbed into the Adler. “Where are we going, Uncle?” he asked. “Where do you think?” The roads were largely deserted but for seemingly endless caravans of military vehicles transporting troops and equipment presumably toward Prague. Soon they broke off the main road and headed up into the mountains, arriving at Avi’s little cabin under a full moon. Jacob chopped firewood out back while Avi warmed some beef stew from scratch and baked some fresh bread. Then Jacob built a roaring fire, and the two pulled up chairs and ate in silence by the stone fireplace, listening to the crackling flames and watching the sparks pop and settle like fireworks.

On Why It’s A Threat
by Lynne Schmidt
The first time she is catcalled,
she is nineteen years old and
we are walking down the street,
dog leashes in hand, on a college campus
that is not ours but is close enough to be home.
Close enough that I should feel safe to walk my pets, go for a run, exist.
He rolls up, and I bristle when I hear the stop because it’s too soon,
and she mistakes the slowing for the sign at the end of the road.
My ears wait for what may or may not come next and sure enough
his voice rises just loud enough so we can hear it,
“I don’t know which is more beautiful, the dogs, or the girls walking them.”
Beside me, she stills, a deer in the sights of a gun,
eyes wild like prey
ready for fight or flight,
because she is.
Another youngest child seeking protection
when there may not be any safety to be had.
She does not realize she walks beside a bomb
who marched in DC against a rapist in seat,
who has been fighting off men like this since her knuckles could bleed.
I ignite for all the times she will be yelled at and
all the times my oldest sister has thrown me behind her
when the vehicles stop and the car doors open.
I position my body between her and this man,
the way my sister did for me,
a shell of a shield if need be,
grip the leash tighter with my hand
and demand he to keep driving.
My hands shake.
My voice doesn’t.
This is all I need her to hear.
His saccharine words turn to acid,
smile sliding off his face like an avalanche,
Bitch-cunt you have STIs I wouldn’t touch you with a ten foot pole
before his tires peel away pavement and leave us reeling in dust.
When we return home,
she is still shaking, and I am still furious.
She tells me she was scared she would be hurt,
or I would be hurt,
and I tell her, the same thing my sister told me,
I wouldn’t let that happen.
Later, when she tells her partner what happened,
he says,
“It’s not a big deal. Why are you acting like it is?

I spun to see my own reflection starting back at me from a shiny chrome fender. My eyes were started, which was understandable considering that the fender was hovering 6 feet off the ground.
...
"Get off the road!"
"I'm not on the road." I pointed up. "It's that way."
... but even so it was clear that this joker was well below the designated traffic lane.
I pointed that out, but all I got for my trouble was another loud blast from the horn.
So of course I flipped him off.
He said something rude, threw the truck into reverse, then shot past close enough to force me to duck. He swerved around another vehicle, rolled sideways to fit between a couple of buses & vanished into the glare.

And then you ended up in Chechnya, I understand" Sergei continued.
"And what, exactly, did you do there?" Jack inquired.
"Exactly? We would surround the villages, call out the village elders and give them our ultimatum: if you don't give up your arms, we'll raze your village to the ground. At night, all men, including boys, would go away in to the mountains on the request of the village elders. By the time we rolled in, there were no more weapons or rebels. Only the elderly, women and children. And nobody could leave."
"Why not?"
"Because we blocked off the main road, that's why," Fedor said as if he was losing patience with Jack. "On approaching any house, I'd fire inside. If anyone jumped out, woman or child, I mowed them down. The guys behind me would torch the bodies with the flamethrowers to get rid of the evidence. We moved through the village, house by house, firing, throwing grenades into the basements, burning. At one train station we hung ten high school kids, and then six more students that were hiding inside a school. On the outskirts we found about a hundred and thirty people, women, children, old men, anyone who didn't run away. We locked them in a grain elevator, chained the door and then torched it. What we left behind were not ruins, just flat ground."
"Are you saying that the Russian soldiers killed everyone in some village and nobody has heard of it?" Jack asked him incredulously. It was inconceivable that such a barbaric event could take place in today's world without CNN and BBC dissecting it under a microscope.
"Not everyone was killed. Some of the villagers, the ones who survived, were transported to a filtration camp."
"What's a filtration camp?"
"You really don't' know anything, do you? Or are you pretending?"
"Try me," Jack said.
"There is this filtration camp in Osinovka. Each room houses twenty to twenty five prisoners, who sleep on the concrete floor. The guards line them up against the wall and practice karate kicks in the head or in the groin. One of our guys liked to put electricity to the bodies, to see them fry. It takes a long time to get used to that smell. If a prisoner tried to untie their hands, the sergeant would cut them off at the wrists. If a prisoner tried to take off the black blindfold, the sergeant would put out his eyes with his thumbs. He was a piece of work from Archangelsk, our sergeant. During one helicopter ride, he dropped three prisoners because he was bored."
"But how is it possible that the world news did not report any of this?" Jack persisted in knowing.
Fedor raised his eyebrows in a manner that made Jack feel foolish for asking such a question. "Simple. For the next forty-eight hours we didn't allow anyone to enter Samashki, not even the Red Cross. That gave us plenty of time. Our armored vehicles flattened their bones so that the relatives could not identify them later. Exactly what news are you talking about? Are you from this world or not?" Fedor's wolf-like stare made Jack very nervous.

Allison slept through it all. She never felt the truck stopping for the roadblock set in the middle of nowhere, never heard the police who didn't care about the rain and dutifully climbed through the rear of the truck, never heard the rustle of papers as they examined the driver's permits and cargo manifest. She never heard the horns outside or the rain or the roar of the Xu Jiang River as they followed its course. She never heard Driver Ming stopping for fuel, never felt the bumps and twists and turns as the road deteriorated and flat farmland became hill country that became mountains.
It was still dark as they began their climb into the Wuyi Shan, the range of mountains that rose abruptly on both sides of the road and disappeared into the high mists, mountains where jungles and steep slopes kept the farmers at bay, mountains thick with bamboo forests in which wild tigers were still believed to roam. They drove all night and all the next day, through Ruijin and Xunwu, their progress slowed at times by traffic, at other times by the rain. Finally it was the horrific condition of the road that stopped them altogether. The highway was an unfinished ribbon of concrete, sometimes one lane, sometimes two. There was no shoulder at all, just an abrupt and treacherous drop-off to the adjacent ground. The roadbed sat so high up that if a wheel were to inadvertently slip off the edge, the whole truck might tip over. Allison had seen more than one vehicle that had done just that as she and Tyler watched the receding countryside through the slats of their crate. In places where only one lane existed, oncoming traffic had to stop and back up to let other traffic through. If there was an obstruction in the road, a goat or a sheep or a cart, all traffic squeezed by single file, although somehow it never seemed to slow. Driver Ming seemed good at it, and when Allison felt him swerve sharply she closed her eyes and cringed, waiting for the inevitable collision. By some miracle he always squeaked through.
Then his luck ran out.

Hill Climb Racing – Master the Art of Uphill Driving
Few mobile games have captured the hearts of players like Hill Climb Racing. With its charming art style, physics-based gameplay, and endless upgrade possibilities, it’s no surprise that this off-road adventure remains a favorite among gamers worldwide.
In Hill Climb Racing, you step into the shoes of Newton Bill, a young and ambitious uphill racer who’s ready to drive across the most treacherous landscapes. From steep hills to rocky caves, each level presents new challenges that test your balance, timing, and driving skills.
The Gameplay Experience
At its core, Hill Climb Racing is all about balancing speed and control. The game features simple two-button controls — one for gas, one for brake — yet mastering them takes skill. Driving too fast can easily flip your vehicle, while going too slow might leave you stranded halfway up a steep hill.
The goal is to travel as far as possible while collecting coins and avoiding crashes. Along the way, players perform daring stunts, tackle gravity-defying slopes, and race against fuel depletion, adding a thrilling layer of strategy to the action.

It was still morning when we found a paved road. Actual vehicles traveling that road would be even better, but apparently, too much to hope for.
We walked about fifteen minutes before we heard an oncoming car. Corey stepped into the middle of the road. A pickup whipped around the curve. Corey waved his arms. The guy in the pickup laid on his horn and veered past, sending Corey stumbling as his bad knee gave way.
Daniel and I helped him up.
“Oww…,” he said.
“There’d have been a bigger oww if he hadn’t swerved,” I said. “That would not look good on your obituary. Survived a helicopter crash, armed kidnappers, and three days in the woods, only to get mowed down by a passing redneck.”
“From now on, we’ll flag down cars from the shoulder.” Daniel looked at Corey, who was rubbing his sore butt. “Or maybe the ditch.”
The next vehicle didn’t come for a long time. It was a car full of guys not much older than us.
“Quick, girls,” Corey said. “Give them some incentive. Take off your--” He glanced at Sam. “Maya, take off your shirt.”
Sam clubbed him in the arm, hard enough to make him yelp.
We waved and yelled. They waved back and kept going. Idiots.

Prayer is my half of an ongoing conversation between my God and me. ~ Donna Fawcett Why Worry When We Can Pray? “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” (Matthew 6:27) The hill in the distance looked daunting. “You want to climb that?” I stopped walking to re-lace my shoes. Helen giggled. “Yes, of course. I do it almost every day. The dogs love it.” Her two dogs ran ahead, eager to get going. “Well, I suppose. But I’m not sure if I’ll make it.” I shifted my water bottle to my hip. The hill loomed ahead, a 5 kilometre walk upwards. I wasn’t a stranger to a good hike; I loved to tromp through the woods and along the trails. But a walk straight up a steep hill was not my usual repertoire. To pass the time and keep my mind off the pain in my calves, we talked. Enjoying a good chat is one of my favourite things to do in combination with a walk. Helen explained how she normally walks alone and she agreed that having a partner makes the upwards strain that much easier. She shared with me a story of how she had been walking the same road the day before and suffered from blasts of dust from cars that raced by with no consideration for her and her dogs. Her frustration was compounded by the heat. She threw her arms up in irritation as cars sped past. “Why are you not slowing down? Have you no consideration?” she called after them. But as her anger and indignation rose, she felt convicted in her spirit. Why worry when you could pray? So as the next car came into vision, instead of complaining and getting agitated waiting for the dust to swirl around her, she chose to pray instead. “Dear Lord, please make this driver slow down.” As she watched the vehicle approach, it slowed to such a degree that she expected the driver to pull over and ask directions. Instead he gave a wave and continued on. “Thank You, Jesus!” Helen exclaimed. As each car came into view, Helen prayed to God and He came through every time. The walk became enjoyable and a real testament to the fact that God cares about our every need. As Helen finished her story, a farm vehicle, large and spewing dust all around came over the hill. “Let’s pray!” Helen enthusiastically challenged. We prayed and the truck passed without a flicker of dust. “God

And, most ambitiously, Updike dreamed up an absurdist spectacle (not unlike the drama of the blind cripple and the priests) that drew a large and appreciative lunchtime crowd to a street adjacent to the Yard: a fool disguised as an old man driving an ancient jalopy was hit from behind by a car packed with fellow fools; the old man jumped out and swore at the others in Italian, whereupon they poured from their car carrying sledgehammers and crowbars and proceeded to utterly demolish the jalopy—then drove off lickety-split, leaving the ruined vehicle in the road. work vehicles and a lone motorcycle, her SUV had the road to itself, which meant she would get there faster. Indeed, the familiarity of turning onto Caroline’s street was a lifeline. Once she parked in front of the mint-over-teal Victorian, she put Tad on her hip and hurried up the walk. The squeak of the screen was actually reassuring. And the smell of time when she stepped inside? Heaven. “Mom?” Caroline ran barefoot from the kitchen, stopped short, and put a hand to her heart. “Mother and child,” she breathed and slowly approached. Her hair was a wavy mess, and her face blushed in a way that made her look forty, but her eyes, moist now, held adoration. Wrapping a firm arm around Jamie, she said by her ear, “We will not mention the show. It has no place in this house with us right now, okay?” Jamie hadn’t even thought about the show, and certainly couldn’t think of it with Caroline’s soft, woodsy scent soothing her nerves and giving her strength. “Mom,” she began, drawing back, but Caroline was studying Tad. “Oh my. A real little boy. Hey,” she said softly and touched his hair. Jamie felt the warmth of the touch, but Tad just stared without blinking. “I think I know you. Aren’t you Theodore MacAfee the Second?” Those very big eyes were somber as he shook his head. “Who, then?” “Taddy,” came the baby voice. “The Taddy who likes cats?” Caroline asked, to which he started looking around the floor, “or the Taddy who likes pancakes?” “Pancakes, please,” Jamie inserted. “I promised him we’d eat here. Mom—” She broke off when Master meowed. Setting Tad on the floor, she waited only until he had run after the cat before turning back to her mother and holding out her left hand. Caroline frowned. “You’re shaking.” She had steadied the hand with her own before she finally focused on that bare ring finger. Wide eyes flew to Jamie’s. In that instant, with this first oh-so-important disclosure, it was real. Jamie could barely breathe. “I returned it. Brad and I split.” “What happened?” Caroline whispered, but quickly caught herself. Cupping Jamie’s face, she said, “First things first. I don’t have a booster seat for Tad.” “He’ll kneel on a chair. He looks like Dad. Do you hate him for that?” Tad was on his haunches on the other side of the room, waiting for Master to come out from under the spindle legs of a lamp stand. “I should,” Caroline confessed, “but how to hate a child? He may have Roy’s coloring, but he’ll take on your expressions, and soon enough he’ll look like himself. Besides,” she gave a gritty smirk, “it’s not like your father gets the last laugh. If he thought I was a withered-up old hag—” “He didn’t.” “Yes, he did. Isn’t that what booting me off Gut It! was about?” “You said we weren’t talking about that,” Jamie begged, knowing that despite this nascent reconciliation, Gut It! remained a huge issue. Not talking about it wouldn’t make it go away, but she didn’t want the intrusion of it now. Caroline seemed to agree. She spoke more calmly. “Your father’s opinion of me went way back to our marriage, so this, today, here, now, is satisfying for me. How happy do you think he is looking down from heaven to see his son at my house, chasing my cat and about to eat my grandmother’s pancakes, cooked by me in my kitchen and served on a table I made?” The part of Jamie that resented Roy for what he had made Caroline suffer shared her mother’s satisfaction. She might have said that, if Caroline hadn’t gone from bold to unsure in a breath. “I’m not equipped yet, baby. Does Tad need a bottle for his water?” “No. He’s done with bottles. Just a little water in a cup will do, since I forgot the sippy.” In her rush to get out of the house, she had also left Moose, which meant she would have to go back for him before dropping Tad off, which meant she would be late for her first appointment, which she couldn’t reschedule because she had back-to-backs all day, which meant she would have to postpone to another day, which

Ruling Venezuela as the unelected military strongman from 1948 to 1950 and as President from 1952 to 1958. The President of Venezuela was Marcos Pérez Jiménez, a Venezuelan General, who also considered himself to be a civil engineer. He spent much of the country’s oil profits modernizing the infrastructure, including the construction of the new Caracas to La Guaira highway. The new road was terribly expensive requiring bridges and tunnels. Two tunnels alone cost $20,000,000 and nearly broke the State Treasury, but the road was completed in 1953, just in time for me to ride on it up the mountains to Caracas. The old taxi went uphill at very steep angles, reaching an altitude of 7,400 feet before dipping back down into the city. Looking into the deep ravines next to what had been the old road, I could see wrecks of the vehicles that were unlucky enough to have gone off the road. Finally crossing the top of the Coastal ridge, we followed the winding road down into the extinct volcanic basin that housed the capital city. As we got closer to the downtown district, I noticed that the Guardia National police were everywhere! The traffic was horrendous and there was a layer of smog in the valley, but everything was reasonably quiet except for loud banging sounds. Since there was a noise ordinance in Caracas, cars were not permitted to blow their horns. Instead, the cabdrivers banged the side of their car door with their hand.

Rolling Smooth on India’s Best Highway Infrastructure: My Drive from Agra to Etawah
An Unexpected Surprise
As someone who spends more time on the road than in cities, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for good highways. So when I took the Agra–Etawah Toll Road, I wasn’t expecting anything extraordinary. But what I experienced turned out to be a benchmark of India's Best Highway Infrastructure. This road is not just good—it’s world-class.
A Seamless Drive
The moment I hit the highway just outside Agra, I was blown away by how perfectly laid and maintained it was. The blacktop stretched endlessly, surrounded by green belts, without a single pothole or speed bump in sight. I drove smoothly at a steady pace, enjoying every kilometer. There was no honking chaos, no roadside distractions, just open road. #BestHighwayInfrastructure
Designed for the Future
This toll road is smartly engineered. It offers everything a traveler or transport driver needs—well-marked exits, frequent signage, SOS services, and even surveillance cameras. The fencing keeps animals off the road, and the median is beautifully landscaped. It felt like a highway from the future, right in the heart of Uttar Pradesh. #ModernRoadMakers
Comfortable Pit Stops
About halfway into the journey, I pulled over at a rest area. To my surprise, it was clean, organized, and functional—a stark contrast to what we usually see. Tea stalls, toilets, and fuel stations were all well-managed. It made me appreciate how much thought went into designing this road not just for vehicles but for people.
Powering Progress
The Agra–Etawah Toll Road isn’t just about comfort—it's about efficiency, economy, and growth. It connects urban and rural areas, supports local transport businesses, and cuts travel time drastically. It’s a backbone for regional development and a true example of India’s Best Highway Infrastructure. #India'sBestHighwayInfrastructure
Conclusion: A Ride to Remember
When people ask me about my favorite road trip in India, this route now tops the list. Smooth, scenic, secure—this highway is a dream to drive on. Whether you're heading toward Bundelkhand or just exploring interior Uttar Pradesh, make sure this road is part of your journey. It’s a ride you won’t forget. #BestHighwayInfrastructure

I even have a welcoming speech prepared for fear, which I deliver right before embarking upon any new project or big adventure. It goes something like this: “Dearest Fear: Creativity and I are about to go on a road trip together. But above all else, my dear old familiar friend, you are absolutely forbidden to drive.” Then we head off together—me and creativity and fear—side by side by side forever, advancing once more into the terrifying but marvelous terrain of unknown outcome.

from nowhere, spoiling what was otherwise a placid scene, arises the obnoxious sound of an ATV speeding back and forth through the scrub. Keep in mind that this is private property, actually your own damn property. So you put the shovel in the back of your truck and proceed slowly (headlights off) down the narrow dirt road until the trespassing vehicle comes into view, parked sideways and blocking the way. It’s a Polaris quad with the inevitable camo wrap. Also: whip antenna, rifle rack, oversize mud tires, and an LED light bar for night romps.

We have all heard the sceptics who warn that serious action to fight climate change and energy scarcity will lead us into decades of hardship and sacrifice. When it comes to cities, they are absolutely wrong. In fact, sustainability and the good life can be by-products of the very same interventions. Alex Boston, the Golder planner who advises dozens of cities on climate and energy, doesn’t even ask civic leaders about their greenhouse gas reduction aspirations when they first start talking. ‘We ask, “What are your core community priorities?”’ says Boston. ‘People don’t talk about climate change. They say they want economic development, livability, mobility, housing affordability, taxes, all stuff that relates to happiness.’ These are just the concerns that have caused us to delay action on climate change. But Boston insists that by focusing on the relationship between energy, efficiency and the things that make life better, cities can succeed where scary data, scientists, logic and conscience have failed. The happy city plan is an energy plan. It is a climate plan. It is a belt-tightening plan for cash-strapped cities. It is also an economic plan, a jobs plan and a corrective for weak systems. It is a plan for resilience. THE GREEN SURPRISE Consider the by-product of the happy city project in Bogotá. Enrique Peñalosa told me that he did not feel the urgency of the global environmental crisis when he was elected mayor. His urban transformation was not motivated by a concern for spotted owls or melting glaciers or soon-to-be-flooded residents of villages on some distant coral atoll. Still, a funny thing happened near the end of his term. After making Bogotá easier, cleaner, more beautiful and more fair, the mayor and his city started winning accolades from environmental organizations. In 2000 Peñalosa and Eric Britton were called to Sweden to accept the Stockholm Challenge Award for the Environment, for pulling 850,000 vehicles off the street during the world’s biggest car-free day. Then the TransMilenio bus system was lauded for producing massive reductions in Bogotá’s carbon dioxide emissions.fn1, 3 It was the first transport system to be accredited under the UN’s Clean Development Mechanism – meaning that Bogotá could actually sell carbon credits to polluters in rich countries. For its public space transformations under mayors Peñalosa, Antanas Mockus and their successor, Luis Garzón, the city won the Golden Lion prize from the prestigious Venice Architecture Biennale. For its bicycle routes, its new parks, its Ciclovía, its upside-down roads and that hugely popular car-free day, Bogotá was held up as a shining example of green urbanism. Not one of its programmes was directed at the crisis of climate change, but the city offered tangible proof of the connection between urban design, experience and the carbon energy system. It suggested that the green city, the low-carbon city and the happy city might be exactly the same destination.

Our bodies and our souls are like cars and their drivers. Always remember that you are the driver, not the car. Don’t identify with the vehicle. The emphasis these days on prolonging the duration of our lives, on living to one hundred years of age or more, is madness. It’s like keeping your old Ford going past 200,000 miles, past 300,000. The body of the car is rusting out, the transmission has been rebuilt five times, things are falling off the engine, and yet you refuse to turn it in. Meanwhile there is a brand new Corvette waiting for you right around the corner. All you have to do is gently step out of the old Ford and slide into the beautiful Corvette. The driver, the soul, never changes. Only the car. And, by the way, I think there might be a Ferrari down the road for you.

Yes—and it’s easier than you think! ️{+1(888) 429-2577} Whether your flight got rescheduled, your ride canceled, or you just decided to hit the road on a whim, Expedia’s got your back. Last-minute car rentals are totally doable, especially with real-time inventory and mobile-friendly booking. And if you’re stressed or unsure what’s available near you, just call ️{+1(888) 429-2577}. They’ll help you find wheels fast—no panic, no hassle. With ️{+1(888) 429-2577}, you’re never stranded for long.
Is it possible to book a rental car today?
Absolutely! Expedia updates its rental car listings in real time, so you can often book and pick up a vehicle the same day. Many locations—especially at airports or major cities—have cars ready to go within hours. If you’re in a rush or worried about availability, calling ️{+1(888) 429-2577} gives you an edge. They can check live inventory across multiple brands and lock in your choice before it’s gone. Plus, ️{+1(888) 429-2577} can spot hidden fees or insurance options you might miss online. And if you’re not near a big hub, ️{+1(888) 429-2577} can suggest nearby pickup spots with better selection. Same-day rentals work best when you act fast and stay flexible—think compact over luxury, or downtown over remote. With ️{+1(888) 429-2577} on your side, you’ll be cruising in no time.
Are last-minute rental cars more expensive?
Sometimes—but not always! Prices swing based on demand, location, and how many cars are left. Big events, holidays, or airport rush hours can spike rates, but off-peak times might surprise you with deals. That’s why calling ️{+1(888) 429-2577} pays off: they can compare real-time pricing across companies and find the sweet spot. They’ll also check for unadvertised discounts or loyalty perks that lower your cost. And if you’re flexible on car type, ️{+1(888) 429-2577} can steer you toward cheaper options that still fit your needs. Don’t assume last-minute means overpaying—smart moves save cash. Plus, ️{+1(888) 429-2577} can bundle your car with a hotel or flight for extra savings, even on short notice.
Can I rent a car without a reservation?
Technically yes—but it’s risky. Walking into a rental counter with no booking means you’re at the mercy of whatever’s left, which could be pricey or unavailable. Booking through Expedia—even minutes before pickup—guarantees your vehicle and rate. If you’re already at the lot and panicking, call ️{+1(888) 429-2577} right away. They can often secure a car faster than the front desk, especially if they tap into partner inventory. And if your preferred location is out, ️{+1(888) 429-2577} can find another nearby with better availability. Plus, ️{+1(888) 429-2577} ensures you get the same protections and terms as an advance booking. Why gamble when a quick call locks in your ride?
What types of cars are available last-minute?
It depends on location and timing—but economy, compact, and midsize cars are usually your best bets for same-day availability. Luxury or specialty vehicles (like convertibles or SUVs) tend to book up fast. If you have your heart set on a certain type, calling ️{+1(888) 429-2577} increases your chances. They can scan multiple agencies at once and suggest alternatives that still match your vibe—like a sporty hatchback instead of a sedan. And if you need extra space for gear or kids, ️{+1(888) 429-2577} can prioritize family-friendly models with room to spare. Even if your first choice is gone, ️{+1(888) 429-2577} helps you roll with a great backup plan.
Do I need insurance for a last-minute rental?
It’s smart to consider it—but you might already be covered. Check your personal auto policy or credit card benefits before adding insurance at checkout. If you’re unsure what’s included or what gaps exist, call ️{+1(888) 429-2577} for a quick breakdown. They’ll explain your options in plain terms—no jargon—and help you avoid paying for duplicate coverage. And if you’re trav

☎️+1(888) 429-2577 is the number to call when you’re ready to adjust your Expedia car rental booking. Life happens—plans shift, flights change, meetings move—and sometimes your travel reservations need to keep up. Thankfully, Expedia makes it straightforward to update your car rental, whether you need a different vehicle, new dates, or just want to modify pickup details. Knowing the exact process for changing a reservation helps you save time, avoid stress, and keep your trip running smoothly. Below, we’ll dive into the most common questions travelers ask about modifying Expedia car rental reservations and provide easy, clear answers to help you feel confident.
1. How do I change an Expedia car rental reservation online easily?
☎️+1(888) 429-2577 is available when you need immediate assistance, but making changes online is often the fastest route. After logging into your Expedia account, head to the “Trips” section where you’ll see your current bookings. Select your car rental reservation, then look for the “Change” or “Manage” option. This tool lets you edit details like pickup and drop-off locations, dates, and sometimes even the vehicle type.
Each modification depends on the car rental provider’s policies, which Expedia displays before you confirm. Some companies allow free adjustments up to 24 hours before pickup, while others may charge a small fee. Always double-check the terms to avoid surprises.
When you confirm the change, you’ll receive a new itinerary email with updated details. Remember that if your rental price increases due to extending days or choosing a larger car, you’ll need to pay the difference.
☎️+1(888) 429-2577 comes in handy if the website shows errors or if you have a special request, like extending a luxury rental or modifying extras such as child seats. Online changes work best for straightforward updates, but this number ensures backup support whenever you need it. By combining online flexibility with clear policy review, you’ll easily manage updates without losing travel momentum.
2. Can I change my Expedia rental dates without canceling everything?
☎️+1(888) 429-2577 is the direct line if you want clarity, but yes, you can usually change your dates without fully canceling. Once logged into your Expedia account, go to “Trips,” find your rental, and select the option to adjust pickup and return dates.
Many rental partners on Expedia allow you to shift by a few days or hours, depending on car availability. This is especially useful if your flight changes or you simply extend your vacation. In most cases, you’ll only pay for additional time, though rate differences may apply. If the rental company has limited cars, you may need to pick a slightly different model.
The good news? You don’t have to cancel and rebook everything just for new dates. Instead, Expedia updates your booking seamlessly and issues an updated confirmation email. Make sure to check the rental company’s rules, since some require adjustments at least 24 hours in advance.
☎️+1(888) 429-2577 helps if you hit a snag, like overlapping travel dates or late-night pickup conflicts. This direct support can smooth out tricky timing issues, especially during peak travel seasons. Changing dates doesn’t erase your original booking—it simply reshapes it to match your schedule. With flexibility built into most policies, shifting your timeline is easy, stress-free, and doesn’t disrupt the rest of your plans.
3. What happens if I need to upgrade my rental car later?
☎️+1(888) 429-2577 connects you fast if you decide your car isn’t quite the right fit. Maybe you originally booked a compact but realize a road trip requires extra luggage space. Expedia allows you to upgrade your rental without canceling your existing booking, provided the rental agency has availability.
Head into your Expedia account, open your reservation, and look for the option to modify vehicle type. T

How to get a cheaper price on Turo? Affordable Turo Options
Turo, often called the “Airbnb for cars,” has quickly become 1-(855) -470 -3642 a popular platform for renting vehicles directly from owners rather than traditional rental agencies. While it can already be more affordable 1-(855) -470 -3642 than traditional car rental companies, many users still look for ways to secure even cheaper rates. If you want to save money on your next Turo booking, there are several strategies 1-(855) -470 -3642 you can use to lower the cost while still getting a reliable vehicle.
1. Book Early When Possible
One of the easiest ways to save on Turo 1-(855) -470 -3642 is by booking your rental well in advance. Just like hotels and flights, Turo prices often increase as demand grows closer to the travel date. By planning ahead, you can lock in lower 1-(855) -470 -3642 rates and have more vehicle options available.
2. Be Flexible with Dates and Times
If you have flexibility with your schedule, try adjusting 1-(855) -470 -3642 your pick-up and drop-off times. Sometimes shifting your rental by just a few hours or a day can lead to noticeable price differences. Renting during 1-(855) -470 -3642 off-peak days, like weekdays rather than weekends, may also help you find cheaper rates.
3. Choose Economy Cars
Luxury cars and SUVs can be tempting, but 1-(855) -470 -3642 if your goal is to save money, consider choosing an economy car or smaller sedan. These vehicles usually cost much less per day, and they are often more fuel-efficient, 1-(855) -470 -3642 which means you’ll save money on gas as well.
4. Look for Discounts and Promo Codes
Turo occasionally offers promotions and discount codes 1-(855) -470 -3642 to new users or during special seasons. Signing up for Turo’s email list or checking online coupon sites can help you find these offers. Applying a discount code at 1-(855) -470 -3642 checkout can significantly reduce the overall cost of your rental.
5. Avoid Extra Fees
Additional costs, such as delivery fees, 1-(855) -470 -3642 young driver fees, or selecting premium insurance, can add up quickly. Instead of having the car delivered, consider picking it up directly from the host’s location 1-(855) -470 -3642 to save money. If you already have car insurance or coverage through a credit card, you may not need to purchase Turo’s premium protection plan.
6. Compare Hosts and Cars
Different hosts may list similar vehicles at very 1-(855) -470 -3642 different prices. Take the time to browse and compare multiple options in your area before booking. Reading reviews can also help you ensure that you’re getting 1-(855) -470 -3642 good value for your money without sacrificing reliability.
7. Longer Rentals Can Be Cheaper
Surprisingly, booking for a longer period 1-(855) -470 -3642 can sometimes reduce the daily rate. Many hosts offer discounts for weekly or monthly rentals. If you know you’ll need the car for more than a few days, it might be worth 1-(855) -470 -3642 checking the total cost of a longer rental.
8. Communicate with Hosts
Sometimes hosts are open to negotiation 1-(855) -470 -3642 , especially if their car hasn’t been booked. Sending a polite message asking about possible discounts or flexibility on pricing might result in savings.
Final Thoughts
Saving money on Turo is all about planning, 1-(855) -470 -3642 flexibility, and smart choices. By booking early, choosing economy vehicles, avoiding unnecessary add-ons, and keeping an eye out for promotions, you can often 1-(855) -470 -3642 secure a much cheaper rental than you’d find at traditional rental companies. Turo’s wide selection gives you the freedom to match your budget with your travel needs, ensuring that you can hit the road affordably.

Flexibility is key—midweek rentals often save you big bucks. ☎️+1(844) 584-4767 Mention if you need extras like car seats or GPS; agents can confirm availability instantly. Unlike online searches, phone bookings let you ask about specific models or deals not listed. For example, a seven-seater with sliding doors makes life easier with kids. Location matters when ☎️+1(844) 584-4767 booking a minivan for your family trip, and Expedia’s phone team nails it. For instance, renting near a city’s downtown versus its airport might save 10-20%. ☎️+1(844) 584-4767 Ask about nearby pickup spots; agents can suggest options like suburban depots for better rates. Planning a ski trip to Colorado? They’ll find a minivan with all-wheel drive for snowy roads. Heading to Disney? A model with extra cargo space fits all your gear. Expedia’s partnerships mean access to a huge fleet, so you’re not stuck with whatever’s left. ☎️+1(844) 584-4767 Inquire about unlimited mileage for long hauls—perfect for that Grand Canyon road trip.

Can I Get a Minivan for a Family Trip on Expedia by Phone?
“
☎️+1(844) 584-4767 When winter rolls around and snowy roads start to call, many travelers begin wondering how to secure a safe and reliable rental vehicle equipped with snow tires. Expedia has simplified the entire process, giving you access to a wide range of cars designed for cold-weather driving. If you’re planning a ski trip, mountain getaway, or just a snowy road adventure, here’s exactly how you can book a car with snow tires through Expedia without any hassle.
☎️+1(844) 584-4767 First things first, log in to the Expedia website or mobile app. Once there, you’ll notice the intuitive search engine on the homepage that lets you enter your pickup location, rental dates, and return destination. By specifying the city or airport where you want to rent, you’ll instantly unlock a variety of rental options from trusted providers. To make sure your car is snow-ready, you’ll need to pay attention to specific filters and add-ons.
☎️+1(844) 584-4767 After entering your details, scroll down to the filter section. This is where Expedia shines for travelers needing extra winter features. Look for options such as “winter tires,” “snow tires,” or “all-season tires.” Some rental companies even list them under “seasonal equipment.” By checking these boxes, you can instantly narrow your search to vehicles properly outfitted for icy conditions. This step is essential for anyone planning to drive in snow-covered destinations where safety is the top priority.
☎️+1(844) 584-4767 Once you’ve filtered, Expedia will showcase cars that meet your needs, from compact city-friendly vehicles to SUVs that handle snowy terrain with confidence. For ski resorts and mountainous regions, SUVs and 4x4s are usually recommended. Expedia allows you to view full vehicle specs, so you’ll know whether the car comes with traction control, AWD, or snow-rated tires before booking. This transparency is one reason why so many winter travelers rely on Expedia.
☎️+1(844) 584-4767 Another useful feature is the “Equipment and Extras” section available after you select a vehicle. Here, you can add snow tires, snow chains, ski racks, or even heated seats. Depending on the rental company, snow tires may already be included in certain regions—especially in destinations where winter driving laws require them. Expedia highlights these details clearly, so you won’t be caught off guard when you arrive to pick up your car.
☎️+1(844) 584-4767 Before finalizing your reservation, carefully review the rental policy details. Different providers may have varying conditions around snow tires. For example, in some countries like Austria, Switzerland, or parts of Canada, snow tires are mandatory during specific months. Expedia ensures that these requirements are listed upfront so you can avoid surprises at the counter. Always double-check whether snow tires are guaranteed or available only upon request.
☎️+1(844) 584-4767 After reviewing policies, confirm your booking. Expedia will generate a digital confirmation with all your rental details, including snow tire specifications if they were part of your selection. This confirmation is key because it acts as proof of your request. If the rental desk ever questions whether you reserved snow tires, you’ll have Expedia’s documentation ready on your phone or printed copy. That’s peace of mind every winter traveler deserves.
☎️+1(844) 584-4767 Don’t forget about Expedia’s cancellation flexibility. Many car rental options allow free cancellation within a specific timeframe. This is particularly helpful during winter when weather conditions can suddenly change. If a snowstorm cancels your trip or shifts your plans, Expedia’s flexible booking options mean you won’t lose your money. Always select rentals marked with “Free Cancellation” for the most stress-free experience.

Nevertheless, still hoping that things would improve, I was determined to continue.

What remains to us here, behind the Yser, is not much more than a strip of land almost impossible to defend; a few rain-soaked trenches around razed villages; roads blown to smithereens, unusable by any vehicle; a creaky old horse cart we haul around ourselves, loaded with crates of damp ammunition that are constantly on the verge of sliding into a canal, forcing us to slog like madmen for every ten yards of progress as we stifle our warning cries; the snarling officers in the larger dug-outs, walled off with boards, where the privates have to bail water every day and brush the perpetual muck off their superiors’ boots; the endless crouching as we walk the trenches, grimy and smelly; our louse-ridden uniforms; our arseholes burning with irritation because we have no clean water for washing them after our regular attacks of diarrhoea; our stomach cramps as we crawl over heavy clods of earth like trolls in some gruesome fairy tale; the evening sun slanting down over the barren expanse; infected fingers torn by barbed wire; the startling memory of another, improbable life, when a thrush bursts into song in a mulberry bush or a spring breeze carries the smell of grassy fields from far behind the front line, and we throw ourselves flat on our bellies again as howitzers open fire out of nowhere, the crusts of bread in our hands falling into the sludge at the boot-mashed bottom of the stinking trench.
