Oculus Dei, the eyes of God.
Rick Yancey (The Isle of Blood (The Monstrumologist, #3))
Every day I try to fight my own brokenness. But once you are forgotten, it's not so bad: a heart broken joins another chorus.
Sally Wen Mao (Oculus: Poems)
MARSILIO Data cannot grasp the depth of such images, which do not pass away or cease bleeding into things.
Nicola Masciandaro
Where do you wander, where do you search for this petal that grows from the stone in your chest?
Sally Wen Mao (Oculus: Poems)
I kissed a marble statue. It was Apollo, it was Krishna, it was Ra.
Sally Wen Mao (Oculus: Poems)
But dear universe: if I can recognize her face under this tunnel of endless shadows against the luminance of all that is extinct and oncoming, then I am not a stranger here.
Sally Wen Mao (Oculus: Poems)
How does one go about persuading the rain to stop?
Ioannis Loukopoulos (Oculus (Sight))
The crossing of a blue bridge which bystanders who cannot distinguish from the blue of the horizon deem invisible.
Ioannis Loukopoulos (Oculus (Sight))
I stood in the center of the Pantheon under the massive oculus, boiling. It was noon and the sun was right overhead, blinding everyone in the room. “Not incredibly practical to cut a hole in the roof if you ask me,” I deadpanned to the ten-year-old beside me. She sighed heavily and rolled her eyes, walking away with Architecture of the Italian Renaissance shoved underneath her arm. Very cultured, these kids today.
R.S. Grey (A Place in the Sun)
What happens if you guys miss a year?” Alex had asked when Darlington first showed her how the library worked. “It happened in 1928.” “And?” “All of the books from the collection crowded into the library at once and the floor collapsed on Chester Vance, Oculus.” “Jesus, that’s horrible.” “I don’t know,” Darlington had said meditatively. “Suffocating beneath a pile of books seems an appropriate way to go for a research assistant.
Leigh Bardugo (Ninth House (Alex Stern, #1))
*oculus: (Latince) Mercek, cam.
Alexandra Lapierre (Artemisia)
Hulsan’s body looked like a charred tree branch with gnarled limbs jutting out from four places, and what used to be his head was a blackened smudge of ash across the ground. “What the hell was that?” Kurna hollered as he climbed out from behind the rubble, and the burly Ignis Mage was shaking so badly, he could hardly put one foot in front of the other. “Uhh … ” I chuckled as I stood and eyed my pistol. “It’s a new weapon I’m working on. It definitely needs a few adjustments, though.” I sent the man an apologetic grin as he gaped at the 1911, and then I heard Urn’s voice booming at my back. “Flynt!” he growled, and I turned to see the large Terra Mage leading four other Defenders with wide eyes and furious scowls. “Fire that weapon in this Oculus one more time, and I’ll be forced to … to … ” I tried not to smirk as the man failed to come up with anything by the time he reached me. “Don’t worry, I’ll fix it,” I finally laughed. “This is just a prototype, and that was not what I expected to happen, but you have to admit, it was pretty fucking awesome.
Eric Vall (Metal Mage 9 (Metal Mage, #9))
Ale,” he demanded. “Now.” I laughed through my gasping breaths, and Wyresus finally opened his eyes just a sliver. “D-Defender Flynt!” he whimpered. “Th-There’s been an attack on the Oculus, and I could have been killed!” “Aye,” Barnik growled. “If ye’ don’t let go of me in the next ten seconds, you’ll certainly be dead.” “Ale,” I quickly agreed with a harried nod, “I’ll get you more ale. Or Rosh! Do you like Rosh?” The gruff Aer Mage’s expression immediately cleared. “Ye’ve got Rosh?” “So much Rosh.” “You get me some Rosh, and I’ll sing him a lullaby before bed,” Barnik said with a grin.

You think about having sex with me while you murder people?” I clarified as we returned to the market. The Baroness shrugged. “Between tasks, yes. I spent over an hour stalking a young lord around Serin, so I had little else to think about.” “I see,” I muttered. “And what happened?” “You pinned me on my knees like the first time you fucked me at the Oculus, and every time I moaned for more, you choked me a little tighter. It was fantastic.” My eyebrows shot up as I quickly glanced around. “Okay, I meant what happened after you stalked the lord, but good to know I need to choke you more often.” “Oh,” the Baroness chuckled. “I killed him, of course. The poor man took an unexpected fall into the canal, and it didn’t seem to matter how much I prodded him with a post, he just stayed beneath the surface until there was nothing to be done.” “Fucking hell,” I snorted a I steered us to a less crowded part of the lane. “What did he do to deserve that?” “I don’t know, I didn’t listen to the man who paid me to do it,” Nulena sighed. “I was too annoyed during our meeting because he kept staring at my breasts every three seconds. So, I decided to go back and kill him once I finished with the lord. He certainly wasn’t staring at my breasts after I gouged his eyes out with a broken ink bottle and shoved a letter opener through his neck.” I took a steadying breath while I tried not to envision any of this. “Well, I’m glad you had a nice time at work.” “I did,” Nulena purred as she sent me a glittering smile. “Not the most satisfying endeavors, but I’m making do with what I have. The best part is the ink bottle man owned seven of the markets in Serin, and no one will find where I hung his body for at least three days. Shipments will be missed, wages will be disrupted, and we can only hope lives are lost over an inheritance battle. The filthy swine had eleven children. Can you believe the gall of him? I did find a moment to steal several nice things for Deya from a line of carriages at the castle, though, and only two footmen died in the process.” “That’s sweet,” I chuckled. “Out of curiosity, where did you hang the ink man’s body?” Nulena sent me a devious grin as we crossed my bridge. “At the sacred garden of the gods, of course. Right above the ceremonial altar.” “Nulena,” I groaned. “Come on, it’s funny!” the Baroness laughed. “The next ritual gathering is in three days, and thanks to me, it will be supremely uncomfortable.” “Alright, but don’t be surprised if the gods end up smiting you for this one,” I mumbled

All Oculus headsets will require a Facebook account by 2023, to help you “find, connect, and play with friends in VR” — and only incidentally to match you to ads.111
David Gerard (Libra Shrugged: How Facebook Tried to Take Over the Money)
Back in very ancient times, when the marble columns of the Halls of Orithena still rose from the black rock of Ecba, all the world’s theors would gather beneath the great dome just before noon. Their leader (at first, Adrakhones himself; later, Diax or one of his other fids) would stand on the analemma, waiting for the shaft of light from the oculus to pass over him at midday: a climax celebrated by the singing of the Anathem to our mother Hylaea who had brought us the light of her father Cnoüs. The aut had fallen into disuse when Orithena had been destroyed and the surviving theors had embarked on the Peregrination. But much later, when the theors retreated to the maths, Saunt Cartas drew on it to anchor the liturgy that was then practiced all through the Old Mathic Age. Again it fell into disuse during the Dispersal to the New Periklynes and the Praxic Age that followed, but then, after the Terrible Events and the Reconstitution, it was revived again, in a new form, centered on the winding of a clock. Virtual reality is finally, well, reality—and it’s getting a lot of buzz, thanks to platforms like the Oculus, HTC Vive, Samsung Gear and the Microsoft HoloLens. But a lot of the talk about VR focuses on video games. While exciting, we believe this technology is capable of doing a lot more, including applications that literally save lives.

Augmented Reality (AR) is a mixture of the real and virtual worlds. Not to be confused with Virtual Reality, AR has no real-life counterparts, such as the Oculus Rift or Vive. AR overlays virtual objects on live video, sound, or graphics.

AR overlays virtual objects on live video, sound, or graphics. For example, you could overlay a virtual T-Rex on top of a video game screen to make it seem like the creature is in the room with you.

While accusations that Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey is a Nazi are surely exaggerations, it is not a stretch to say that white supremacy is alive and well in certain segments of Silicon Valley. From Oculus founder Palmer Luckey, a Trump donor who reportedly ran a “shitposting” account on Reddit, to Facebook board member Peter Thiel, known for attending white nationalist–friendly events and undermining free expression, to Clearview AI CEO Hoan Ton-That, perhaps Silicon Valley’s most notable alt-right supporter, the field is rife with white supremacist sympathizers.30

Don't try to imitate artists. Try to paint and when you can paint, try to create art. For art is what happens when we cross the boundary from good to excellent.

Me? I'm a Stoic. Every time my eyes are opened, I am eager to see the world anew.

I know not of who I am, I know not of what I'll be, and yet in all my ignorance I am the thing of which I know the most, and no other.

But is it fear that is the enemy? Let me tell you about fear. We cannot negotiate with fear as when it is, there’s nothing else. We cannot strike fear down, for cut a head of the hydra and two will quickly take its place. We cannot shun fear, lest we invite it through the cracks. We cannot tame fear, dragons are not slaves. We cannot live in fear, because it will haunt our every step. Fear is no enemy. We greet fear as an old friend and hold it tight, until it burns our hand.

So that’s what the cigarettes are for,” Mitchell noted, as McCauley broke out a carton of Marlboro Reds and started divvying up packs to the engineers. And little by little, the scheduling estimates started to improve. That mold they said would take a week? Maybe it would really only take three days.

Forgive me if the wind stole the howl from my mouth and whipped it against your windowpanes. When I lived, I wanted to be seen.

Facebook is an addictive technological drug that, like every drug, gives people temporary pleasure and, ultimately, causes people to become psychiatrically ill,” psychiatrist Keith Ablow recently explained in an article for Fox News. “Oculus Rift will make matters worse.

The AI brain model is derived from the quad abstract golden ratio, sΦrt, trigonometry, algebra, geometry, statistics, and built by adding aspects and/or characteristics from the diablo videogame. The 1111>11>1 was then abstracted from the ground up in knowing useful terminology in coding, knowledge management, and an ancient romantic dungeon crawler hack and slash game with both male and female classes and Items. I found the runes and certain items in the game to be very useful in this derivation, and I had an Ice orb from an Oculus of a blast in time doing it through my continued studies on decimal to hexadecimal to binary conversions and/or bit shifts and rotations from little to big endian. I chose to derive from diabo for two major reasons. The names or references to the class's abilities with unique, set, and rare items were out of this world, and I sort of found it hard to believe that they had the time and money to build it from in USA companies. Finally, I realized my objective was complete that I created the perfect AI brain with Cognitive, Affective, and Psychomotor skills...So this is It? I'm thinking wow!

Can I decline a nymph so divine? Her voice like a flute is dulcis; Her oculus bright, her manus white And soft, when I tacto, her pulse is. O how bella, my puella I’ll kiss in secula seculorum; If I’ve luck, sir, she’s my uxor, O dies benedictorum.

We have a long way to go before humanity is constantly connected to and monitored by a handful of companies. Amazon Echo, Google Home, and Oculus Rift are currently just vanity products for the wealthiest among us. But the model is clear: the operating system of our lives would be about our bodies, our consciousness, our decisions. Attention would be optional. Power would be more concentrated, and manipulation constant. That’s a world with no patience for autonomy and no space for democracy. It would be a lazy, narcotic world. It would not be some dystopian state of mass slavery, as portrayed in The Matrix. It would be kind of dull and kind of fun. It would be an existence like that in Brave New World.
Siva Vaidhyanathan (Antisocial Media: How Facebook Disconnects Us and Undermines Democracy)
Taco Hidde Bakker: (quoting a sentence from Schles' book "Oculus") Further on you write, decidedly, “Seeing is not knowing. Recognition is not knowledge”. […] Muses are the origin of knowledge. Almost everything one knows and is able to know nowadays, comes from hearsay, isn’t based on one’s own experiences or witnessing of events. Most of us don’t even directly witness historically decisive events (or what have come to be portrayed as such by the media) during our lifetimes. By means of the mechanisms of complex (visual) representation networks, we are second-order or even third-order witnesses. If we were to consider photography sui generis, then it is a Muse. It is virtually omnipresent, it sees everything, transmits visual evidence to people all over the globe, and enlargers their body of knowledge.
Taco Hidde Bakker (The Photograph That Took the Place of a Mountain)
As he tinkered away inside his trailer—pumping himself up with power metal music—he was reminded of something that visionary game programmer John Carmack had once said about virtual reality: “It’s a moral imperative,” Carmack had described, touting the ways in which VR could empower anyone—of any socioeconomic standing—to experience anything.
Blake J. Harris (The History of the Future: Oculus, Facebook, and the Revolution That Swept Virtual Reality)
You don’t need to hear to listen to the truth.
